A legendary fight. I remember his UFC debut vs Ben Henderson. I haven't watched it since then and I was I was very young, but I remember thinking Gil should've won. Sorry, I know it has nothing to do with the video, but I was wondering if you would be open to training even if it's just once some of the Streetbeefs Westcoast fighters. I'm not as charismatic as Death Sentence and Winged C but I love fighting just as much as they do. I fight in the Westcoast Branch. It would be an honor to learn from a legend. I was a fan of MMA before it was cool. When the majority of people would say it was fruity and stuff like "It's two guys humping" lol. I remember so many fights and history of MMA/Boxing. I remember growing up and watching ESPN Classic Boxing , TUF, UFC unleashed/reloaded on Spike and Fox. I truly love fighting. Your fight vs Rodtang is to me one of the most incredible performances I've ever seen. Anyway, I hope I didn't disrespect you or Gil with this comment. You guys are legends.
man this guy is dope - seems like hes a legend in the OG era of MMA and is giving back quietly and isnt looking for the spotlight or credit. Super dope
Damn. U really don't know..... go watch real gangsta fight shit. Watch Gilbert "El Nino" Melendez! Strikeforce & all his walkouts to Ice Cube! Watch Nick. Nate! The real Gssss
My friend Gil! I agree with what you guys said about the "golden era" of MMA. Back in between 2006 - 2010 the UFC operated with stories. Chuck vs Tito, Franklin vs Silva etc. There was build up, and like you guys said there was only a few events a year. Then Strikeforce came out with the first legal and biggest MMA event in California. It was Frank Shamrock vs Cesar Gracie and Gil was on that card against my other friend Harris Sarmiento. The vibe was different back then and you guys hit on it. A big part of what changed as well was different regions had something that people were paying attention to. The US had the UFC and then Strikeforce came along as a solid competitor. Japan had Pride and Shooto, Hawaii had Rumble on the Rock, Guam had PXC which was making noise in the Pacific, and then back in the US you had the smaller orgs like WEC, WFA, KOTC etc that were doing great things. Back then being a fighter was unique. As Gil said there are tons of fighters that are more athletes when back then being a real fighter kept it limited so there weren't as many "fighters" fighting. If you were a fighter back then, you were a true solider that was built to fight. I think that's kind of died out today. Also, back then you had small brands that were involved in the sport that added another layer to it. Once the UFC went mainstream and then now with Paramount, the amount of new viewership is good for business but I think it's taking away from the "culture" of fighting. On Saturday's now, my family and friends no longer get together like we did before to watch an event. We used to have BBQ's and had somewhat of a party or gathering to watch. Now they barely tune in to watch. Great interview overall, and I'm always pumped when I see my man Gil doing something.
When Robbie Lawler asked Nick Diaz if he was good, not after the fight ended but he asked if he was good in life? Man that cut deep, Robbie didn’t even wanna put the last shots on him. Glad to hear Nick is doing better
Nick had no motivation at all to fight Lawler. At all. He already beat him. Why was he fighting him again? Nick would've been in shape & ready to fight Usman that was supposed to be the fight.
DJ, could/would you get a sit down with Do Bronx? Although the language barrier is there, i think it would be awesome and also a learning experience for you with interviewing fighters/people.
Gilbert still has the best fight to date with Diego! Gilbert is an animal, I still talk about that fight. He picked Diego apart and showed so much heart. This is so rad you have him on this POD, you never see much of him so this is super cool.
I haven’t followed you for a long time, but I’ve known of you for a while. The side of you I see now truly gives me motivation in life to strive toward certain goals and to become a better person. I can tell from you that you’re genuinely a good person, and I hope the best for you and your family, even though you might never read this. I’ve always hoped I could be more like you as a human being, aside from the athlete part. I’m sure your family and friends are very happy to have such a special person in their lives. May god bless your soul DJ❤ greets from the netherlands
There’s always those guys. Who are legends for ppl in the know. But weren’t able to hit mainstream bc their primes weren’t in the ufc. Gil was at one point considered the best lightweight on earth. Just sux when someone goes under appreciated. I’ve watched mma consistently for about 20 years now. Damn. lol. I wasnt able to consistently watch all the ufc ppv’s but I had showtime and strikeforce and elite xc to a lesser degree were so damn good. And u can tell. Much smaller organization. But once ufc bought it and their fighters crossed over. Many went on to become champs or perennial contenders. And Gil was at the forefront of that. Legend in my eyes
DJ, when you and Gill talk about the "I am legend moment." Where a fighter is faced with fighting stiff competition that he's supposed to lose. "Who was that fight for you if you had one?" Would be an awesome question to ask. I never thought about that until Gill was talking about it and I realized I really wanted to know the answer to that. I love your interviews, but I've never heard anyone ask a fighter that question before, it would be awesome, kinda inside information to hear from the fighters own mouth.
3 of them had world titles & the other, well he became one of the biggest mma/fighting stars of alltime in this modern era. Nate is an absolute superstar & made more more than all 3 of them combined probably lol
Couldn’t be more right. Affliction was a lot of fun. If anything they did not disappoint u can at least get that out of it. Other than pride strikeforce and ufc was these special organizations that put really good fights on. Given that was the golden yrs of mma if u think about who was fighting back then. And who was fighting eachother. Never going to be matched again.
I'm glad I found this video with Gilbert because I have a message for Jill please tell Nick about the UFC wrestling gig that they're paying good money for and the Jiu Jitsu tournaments they're paying for and they're paying really good talk to Henry sabuto he's getting paid really good from somebody to wrestle and you got to talk to him about it and get Nick into it I don't want him throwing hands man that's he's too old I don't care I love Nick he's a badass could he do it probably I don't want to watch it I don't want to see it I want to see and make money a lot of money doing wrestling and Jiu-Jitsu and coaching I don't want to see Nick in the ring again just don't do that to us we already went through it with Robbie and the last time they fought come on man please Gilbert I'm begging you to introduce him to that
I remember Olaf from the pre-zuffa WEC days. I remember he was with Greg Jackson at one point and I think was Holly Holm who broke his nose in sparring
Ufc is still in a good place. Its just there stars don't fight enough. We haven't seen alex in awhile, jon jones, illa, McGregor, the tom fight was a fluke. They had Alex fighting Diego again, khazmat barely fights.. But theres still many exciting fights to be done in the ufc. Its just the top names don't fight as much. Y'all didn't mention Glory. Glory is a very entertaining organization. Its a shame it doesn't get the recognition. Also rizin is good. Danas zuffa boxing is entertaining... Still alot going on..
The matchmaker for WEC was Scott Adam's who fought at UFC 24 and helped trained Tito and Chuck back in the day with Leg Locks. After a horrible show, Zuffa fired Scott Adam's and hired Sean Shelby after that
Would the UFC keep a event going if one of the UFC fighters died during a weight cut or stop the whole event. I remember when owen heart died in wwf and the show went on that night.
Please help give us a full BMF TOURNAMENT NIGHT. Early prelims: Women’s BAB title + Heavyweight BMF. Prelims: Lightweight + Middleweight BMF. DJ has survivors guilt, because he became one of the goats. Like people who go to war and make it back but their friends didnt. Thats why he will tell people not to fight
Gil is a legend of this game, watch his fight vs Diego Sanchez if you haven’t before!

I was Gilbert’s first pro fight. It was an honor
I don’t think you were brother
@christianwallace7805 he was actually. If you look up Gilbert’s record you’ll find that his debut match was Gilbert Melendez v Darce P. Whizzer
@sziththe account who said he was , was who i was referring to

To this day i still let all the new fans i meet to go back and watch Gilbert vs Diego Sanchez. Absolute Mexican WAR , dog fight!
The Sanchez fight was towards the end of his career. You should watch his fights before he was in the UFC.
@merkog7444exactly. His strikeforce fights were amazing..better talent & fought all the hitters him & Nick

Man Gil had so many legendary hits great style and grit
Gilbert sounds like he’s trying to sell me something that I know I don’t want to buy. But I’m probably gonna buy it because he’s a great sales man.
