I first saw this a half hour ago on Classic Arts Showcase, and sat there saying "Wow!" the entire time! I'm so glad to have thus link so I can share it!
Gil Shaham!!! OMG! Both Bizet and Saritate would wake up from their rest to listen to that... They, too, would hear this piece like they've never heard it before. Even Cladio Abado was blown away..... What more can be said? Accuracy? - better than Chaifetz. Warmth? - better than Perlman. Whimsical? - better than Paganini himself. Gil Rocks!!!
Gil Shaham is a violin phenomenon. All of the other versions on youtube are much slower and simply not at the same level on musicianship. You can also see that he uses the hard and correct fingering that Sarasate intended for this. He may be a little off-key here and there, but the overall is no less than stunning. One can see the admiration on the orchestra members' faces at the end, and you can bet that these musicians have witnessed first hand some well-played performances in the past. Nobody makes this piece come alive like him - singing, mourning, dancing with passion and ever inspiring. The only violin player today at his level of playing is Lisa Batiashvili, but unfortunately there is no recording of her palying this piece on RUclips. For years, I've regarded Shaham's Brahms concerto from the above concert (with Abbado and the Berliner) to be the ultimate version, until I stumbled upon Batiashvili's version, which is found on youtube in two different concerts and is flawless on both. She is indeed "The queen of violin", and if any of you can upload her version of Carmen Fantasy please do so.
The best Sarasate Carmen - and it is best by some distance - is the one Midori gave at Bernstein's 70th birthday concert (although unfortunately she had to make a couple of cuts to shorten the performance). I would also recommend Chloe Chua's performance in recital at the Atlanta festival in 2019. Her characterisation of Carmen is more compelling than Gil's. Both performances are on YT.
Gil Shaham's Violin, the 1699 Countess Polignac Stradivarius, is different from most other Strads; it is narrower and longer (slim), and was conceived in the period 1690-1700, the decade in which Stradivari experimented with its long model, with greater flattening of the belly. The old “liutaio” was a genius, who even changing its primitive form, made in its new model the sound flow like magic.
Although Pablo used the french word "fantaisie," I doubt he'd be unhappy to see its spanish form "fantasia." Just as related to "fantaisie" as the english "fantasy" is.
Совершенная техника и тончайшее по красоте исполнение!!!Брависсимо ШАХАМ и АБАДО!!!Спасибо за радость!!!❤
アバドとシャハム、ベルリン、パレルモでのブラームスも素晴らしすぎ

+Sergio Barrale I haven't heard of her, but I'll certainly check her out. Thanks for the comment.
Gerhard Taschner's piano accompanying version is very similar to this , very fine too :)
박찬정 Sarah Chang plays beautifully
@@dionisiobravo7367 not as well as Augustin hadelich
I was incredibly lucky to see Gil play the finale from this piece at a concert in LA a few years ago, as an encore. Best day ever.
Certain recordings become the iconic version of a piece, and this is certainly one of those
What a rendition! I keep coming back to it over the years.
Perfect Maestro.
Perfect Orchestra.
Perfect Violist.
Perfect Instrument.
Perfect Hall....
Virtuousically, perhaps the best performance ever by a solo violinist.
best version of Carmen Fantasy
as far as interpretation and emotion, Gil is consistently my favorite violinist. he also has the best sounding violin out there.
John Pena he may not have the best sounding violin, but he clearly makes it sound as if it was the best violin !

Perfección, belleza absoluta... Bendición para mis oidos. Gracias!!!
I got to see Mr. Shaham this past week with the Cleveland Orchestra. What a joy!

This was a live perf in 1991 I think in Mumbai. Gil's debut. Remember trying to tape this off of a TV. Phenomenal.
Breathtaking interpretation, including the orchestra. If anyone knows a better version please let me know. I don’t.

音楽は私たちの人生に寄り添って側にある。何というのか音楽には助けられている。演歌、ロックもそうである。私はそろそろ終焉だが、礼を言うよ。 2020 February 6 .

God of left and right hand....
At 7:19 there's one 2nd violinist playing pizzicato...
He plays it with his left hand, as instructed on the sheet music...
Merci .........:)
May I ask which orchestra is this?
Berliner Philharmonic
👍🏻👍🏻
👏👏👏
Pablo de Sarasate. Carmen Fantasy and not Fantasia.
A violin fantasy on themes from the opera Carmen by Georges Bizet.
Although Pablo used the french word "fantaisie," I doubt he'd be unhappy to see its spanish form "fantasia." Just as related to "fantaisie" as the english "fantasy" is.
❤
Sentimento e velocidade. Um violinista como nunca se viu. Perfeito.
