ankle circles, can begin them 3 to 5 days after injury. stop if sharp pain, keep going if dull pain. buy some therabands or cheap bands that are like 2 to 3 inches wide, very stretchy, and tie them around your ankle many times. do the ankle circles with those. it's called flossing. then single leg pogo hops in every direction. kneesovertoesguy has a good ankle sprain protocol. all of these worked for me, pure rest never worked but only lengthened the recovery process. I'm a dedicated hooper who had a grade 2 ankle sprain in 2020 and re-aggravated it 3 times in 2021 and 2022.

It can take over a month to feel better to the poor of playing again, but the pain is manageable after about 1-2 weeks from my experience.

I’ll never forget my first ankle sprain, especially that awful sensation of the top of my foot rolling all the way over until it was touching the ground - it makes me shiver just to think about it. In the moment right after it happened I remember thinking that surely I had just snapped every structure in my ankle. But anyway, I went on to sprain that same ankle on two other occasions and neither of those were even remotely close to the first in terms of acute pain.

Out for the season for sure. Doesn't really matter what the timetable is. Just hope it's not a long term injury that affects him for years to come. That's about it. That's a lot of force coming down on his ankle based on the way he was moving and the way the ankle turned. Literally all of the force was put into that ankle.

my worst feeling ankle sprain was like this one, from the angle of OVER the last two toes instead of the usual side one. I've NEVER felt a worst one, and i've had plenty of "regulars" before..I'm guessing its because its such a different motion that you don't have ANY "catch/anticipation" while its happening to somewhat soften the blow. The good part was that my motion while healing was A LOT better than the "regular ones"
    Hopefully hes okay

It started when I was young playing football and got tackle and the guy twisted my ankle as he was tackling me. Then playing basketball I would all way roll it on someone I'm playing against. Then after I turn 18 I went and got a job and I will turn my ankle on rocks or any little thing. To this day I'm 58 I still tend to turn my ankle just by going on a daily walk. Unfortunately my father was old school, told me you’re alright get up and walk it off, of course I couldn’t do that was hopping and skipping all over the place. Parents took me to the hospital the next day, was in a cast for 2or 3 months I think. High school basketball didn’t go as planned, was plagued by ankle and knee problems and didn’t get along with the head coach. The injury was around 2003-2004, and I didn’t get taller, I was 6”3 when this happened.

I had a grade 3 sprain some years ago while out running. Was running down stairs full speed and my foot caught the edge of the last stair. I suffered a full inversion sprain and heard a loud crack; was later told that was the ligament ripping apart.
Whenever I see ankle injuries now I immediately cringe. And like anything else in life, experience brings a lot of knowledge with it. It took me a full year to get back to running and several more years for the stiffness to disappear. I could probably write a book about the whole long ordeal, including the mistakes made along the way that delayed my recovery.

I got dizzy a few minutes afterwards.....and boy it swelled up fast. I had to loosen my sneaker fast, I couldn't plant on it for a out 3-4 days.....and a total of 6-7 being bruised badly....
But after spraining each ankle badly once thank God I haven't sprained it ever since.....actually they have felt a bit stronger....but one thing I do is soak it in Epsom salt for a week about twice a day in hot water.....and once you can move it always exercise it when you have time. Like move it around, it will give it much more mobility and prevent any future serious sprains...

Do you think there would be less ankle injuries if players went back to high tops?

I did this years ago before a vacation on the beach. The carpet in the condo we were renting was really thick/soft and I kept rolling it on the damn carpet. Every time I got up to get something I dreaded crossing the carpet too the kitchen. Worst vacation ever. 😂

I have curry ankles, I’ll get sprains fairly often playing basketball I have foot drop from a hip flexor injury I never have sprains before it so I tend to end up either tripping on my feet not picking up all the way or by just pure back luck I end up stepping on peoples feet, I can attest they are indeed extremely painful the first few minutes, I’ve sprained a ankle mid game screamed so loud I could hear mothers in the crowd say “ oh my god is he ok” and then 15 minutes later ice me up tape me up and I can spot up the whole game and just shoot won’t be able to do much else tho absolute come on defense
