Thanks! I totally understood your patient approach to removing the cover, a laptop of that age is always likely to have britle clips. The front did appear to need to come away first to releave pressure back clips.
Agreed. Now that I have the bottom of the laptop off and can examine it, it does appear the front should have been unclipped and lifted about an inch, and then pulled towards me to disengage the fasteners (not clips) in the center of the battery and the back of the cover. With each Dell being different, not sure this knowledge will help me with future removals... Just a bad design, in my opinion.
