I am a New Orleans native as well, and I must say you are on point. I can recall one time advising a wealthy, elderly couple to go back to their hotel room and take off their expensive jewelry. The lady wore a fur coat and a LV purse! They said they were going to eat at a restaurant, but it was so late a night. They thanked me for letting them know. I probably saved their lives.
Goodness, you most certainly did! I don't even carry a purse. Everything goes in my pocket.
I will dress down and not look affluent
Amen
Ewe. Vgguh hi 👋 my dear dear ug
As a native, I thank you for your honest post. Most people have never visited my city and will just stereotype it as just drunk people on Bourbon Street. You are one of the few reviewers who give you a more realistic view and let folks know that there is SO MUCH MORE TO DO BESIDES GET DRUNK ON BOURBON STREET. Upon watching your video on my home town, I can say that I trust your judgement on all of your video's b/c you nailed it! Thank you! I am so happy that I have stumbled upon your awesome travel blog :)
We like Wolters World. We handled NOLA in an honest way, he seems like a smart dude.
Being from Savannah but visiting Charleston and New Orleans frequently, I understand what you're saying completely.
I love my home town, New Orleans is a diamond
New Orleans is a Democrat/ liberal run Nigga infested shithole. If you value yours and your family's lives, steer clear of this cesspool.
I agreed with a lot of what he had said... except I've never had trouble finding a quality hotel for under $100 a night (aside from Mardi Gras time). You can find plenty of places to stay for a nice price if you put a small effort in.
Appreciate the comments about the friendly people of N/O. Lots of cities have beautiful sights, but the people are what makes the experience complete. BTW, I`m a native of Iowa who came down here for work, fell in love, and never left. Been here 26 yrs..
Tim Priske Awesome!
Wow still down there Tim? sounds like a fun place to visit and party at, but yes be respectful to the locals. I hope the city is not to dangerous to travel around in without running into street crime.
Yup..still here!. The video gives perfect advice about safety. Stay in a group if you can, and stick to the main streets, you’ll be fine. Hope you decide to come!! 😊
Truth!
@@timinla64 You made the right choice. Do you ever miss Iowa?
This guy is dead on. I'm from Houston but I often visit Nola a lot. When I go to New Orleans I don't worry about money yeah your gonna spend a bit but honestly it's well worth it enjoy the experience. the jazz is amazing the people are mostly awesome, its really a great place.
j conde Thanks JC I appreciate the kind words. and yes, NOLA is freaking awesome :)
Hey I'm from Houston too! I'll be visiting New Orleans for the first time in February for a concert!
I LOVE Houston! Just visit two days ago, in San Antonio now :) We're from Florida on the coast.
I'm from New Orleans and visit Houston alot! Love Texas!
I'm from New Orleans and drunk tourist isn't bad unless your out at around 2:00. And you're probably drunk if you're walking around French Quarter late at night. And also, parking is hard, but you'll find a place within 15 minutes if you find the right streets. Also, the hotels are expensive, because they're nice hotels. The restaurants are expensive because the food is good. Not everything revolves around tourists. And the heat is only bad in the Summer. And, you'll only get pick pocketed if you're not aware of your surroundings (most people from Nola are very aware).
If you're looking for a nice shopping/restaurant street, then I suggested Magazine Street. Also, you're very right. All the food here is amazing, it's delicious.
New Orleans earned a special place in my heart after just 4 days in that amazing city! The food was out of this world... literally EVERYWHERE we went (def try GW Fins for seafood & Cafe Du Monde for beignets)
But I can’t express enough, how much I absolutely fell head over heels for THE PEOPLE of New Orleans!!! Such a special place! ♥️
You nailed it. I'm a native, and I agree with you 100%! I can't wait to go back for the incredible food.
I have been several times and have always stayed in the French Quarter, I have never paid over $100 a night. It not hard to stay under $10 a meal as long as you avoid the tourist spots and the high end restaurants. There are fantastic little restaurants everywhere you go that don't charge an arm and a leg.
TheAutumnGypsy what are some good cheap restaurants?
Under 100 to shower with 15 other people. I’m glad I paid 400 a nite because I will probably not be back for some time
You could not be more spot on! I really enjoyed your video, it brought back wonderful memories :)
No matter where I'm thinking of visiting next, you have a video on it. Thanks, man.
Best time to visit New Orleans is in December. The weather is perfect and the holiday decorations are beautiful.
Though I live in Las Vegas now, I'm born and raised in New Orleans. Good points in this video, especially going to NOLA during months like April and October. Those are the months when the weather is usually best and French Quarter Fest is definitely a must see. Excellent music and don't get me started on the food!
RobdaVegasMailman I just got hungry seeing the word food and the title of the video :)
RobdaVegasMailman j
You’re awesome Mark! I will be visiting New Orleans this weekend and I cannot contain my excitement!
Hi there! There’s something about your energy that makes us want to be instantly friends with you :) Thanks for the upload, my husband and I will be visiting nola this late August for our 4th wedding anniversary and your vids have been the most helpful
Mark, I've always loved your videos. Your episode about Peru was dead on (I used to live there!)! My wife and I are really looking forward to our first visit to New Orleans. Thanks for the tips!
New Orleans always sounds worse on tv than it actually is. When I’m riding through my city I’m not worried about the crime and I was at Endymion Mardi Gras Parade in February and thats the safest Ive ever felt at Mardi Gras. obviously don’t go down dark allies, or go into places like Hollygrove or Lower 9th Ward. The rest of the city is great NOPD is getting better. I’ve been out in the a bad part of the city at 1am and it was fine, so don’t be afraid of Nola. We have our good times and bad times.
Good to know. Some of these comments are scaring me lol
Kameron it’s not that bad I’m from there
Just because you feel safe doesn’t mean you are safe and just because nothing happened in a bad area at 1 am doesn’t mean you aren’t increasing your odds of being a victim. Chances are, you’ll be alright no matter where you are, but the truth is that New Orleans is one of the most crime-ridden cities in the country, so just keep that in mind when you make decisions.
@@JonesyFit Just be streetwise.
Does anybody know anything about Timber Bluff Lane, area code 70131? I have the opportunity to relocate there but don't know anything about the area.. Any advice would be much appreciated..
As always, great video! Thanks for the info
Had a great time here last week! Took uber (be aware an occasional driver will turn map off and take you the pricy route) and the trolly once which I found time consuming but only $3 for 24hr pass. So parking wasnt our problem. Stayed at The Crowne Plaza which was pretty reasonable and nice accommodations located right on Canal St. Sticky a bit and we quit a walkin tour 3/4 of the way through. People were friendly and welcoming. We did not hang out much past 9pm. Enjoyed Audubon Park, the aquarium, local souvenir shops, St Louis Cathedral in Jackson Square, Marti Gras and Katrina museum right there too plus Cafe du Monde. Chartehouse for drinks and Natchez brunch cruise, Garden district tour included Lafayette Cemetary #1. Would do it all again!
THANK YOU! I appreciate this video so much. Everything he said was true and he seems like a very respectful tourist, we’ll take you back any day sir!!
Everything he said as "bad" about New Orleans exists to greater extremes across the country... crime, parking, drunks, costs - try Washington DC , Chicago, NYC, Cleveland, Miami... Those places make New Orleans look quite cheap and tame
Great videos! I love your clear, concise, compact presentation. Just enough info to give me an idea of what to expect. Do you have a video on Savannah, GA? Keep up the good work!
Mark is a BAMF - I love this guy. He’s got such great advice. He’s like Rick Steves, without that awkward inflection/cadence in his voice. Thanks for all the advice Mark, I look forward to going to NOLA and taking all your suggestions about the big easy.
haha your videos are always funny and heartwarming. i've got relatives living in new orleans (and some other places in usa) and i've been there 3 times now. really love the people and the food/culture! i've even went shrimping for a couple of months with my uncle. keep doing your thing!
Shrimping? that is cool! Most my uncle did with me was teach me to put beer on the bottom of a beer glass so it doesn't stick to the napkin :) But on a serious note, thank you for your kind words. It means a lot to hear them. All the best to you and on your travels!
I’m at New Orleans with my family. It’s awesome here and the Beignets are to die for!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I lived in NOLA my whole life. I love it here. This was a great video and right on point.
P. S. I almost died ☠️ from laughter when you said wives and back tracked with the photo and comment.
HAHA!! Look @ 4:33 the "Look on her face" = Priceless! Great tips. Feel we only need to go here once though, as it's my 91-Year-old Mom's dream. And we did 2 memorial "Victory Bricks" for her and Dad at WWII museum. Going to get in that boat ride though. Lol! You keep it fun. Thanks much!!
Being a Louisiana native (just across the lake from the city, and former resident of the city), you nailed it. Wonderful video. As always......satisfied with your videos.
I really enjoy your videos. I am from Australia and have visited NO twice. What I love best is walking in garden district, cemetery tour, plantation tour and the food!!!
so awesome isn't it? all the best to you on your travels!
The cemeteries are definitely one of the most unique things about New Orleans. My grandfather is in St. Louis Cemetery #3, which is right by City Park and the Fair Grounds race track. He loved going to the horse races there...so much so that not long before he passed, he bought a plot in the huge mausoleum that faces the track. He left us specific instructions that when he was interred, that he would be facing the track, so that "he could see the horses running by."
Sound, sensible advice. Thank you.
Just got back from new Orleans and agree with all your points and id throw in poor road conditions in with disliking the driving. While having beignets at cafe du monde, a bird landed on my table and stole a piece off my dish. Hate #6 is that bird.
My son and I recently visited, although we’re not party people! Our hotel was very reasonable - in the Garden District. We used the streetcars to get to the city quickly, and also to the other side of town to the Audubon. We also took a ferry to a nearby island (I forgot the name), and took a free tour of the Mississippi River system. The only drawback is that we visited in August. It was really hot and humid.
Hey Mark, I really like watching your videos especially the ones on the places I have been to. You are pretty much right on!
That is great to hear pippetdog. I appreciate the comment and the watching :) all the best to you on your travels!
Great video! Also about hotel and restaurant prices: theres some great bed and breakfasts in the uptown area and some good food deals outside of the center. (Domelices poboys for example)
I really liked your video, I'm from the UK and have only just started travelling, I've got some good advice from your video's so thank you very much.
that is really great to hear wayne. I am glad we can help you explore more of the world! great travels for you my friend!
Well done. I would have thought you were born and raised in NOLA. There are a lot of hidden places for some of the best food in NOLA. Great video!
I live in Louisiana and I hate that there's so many damn bugs out in the summer so guys if you plan on visiting in the summer, please pack bug spray
topkek so true
The Bombblows12 what kinds of bug you talking about ?
The native bird. The Mosquito are the size of dragon flies. That's about the only one that is aggravating. Termites are a huge problem for the people that live here, but they are only harmful to homes.
We were just in NOLA a couple of days ago. Saw some palmetto bugs, but the only thing I got bitten by was a horsefly. No mosquitoes in the areas we were in for that period.
topkek I know in Alexandria there slot of mosquitoes
Just went a couple of weeks for the first time with my daughter and I LOVED it. Definitely one of my favorite tourist destinations….and I don’t even drink. Lol
I live in New Orleans and I love this city. With that in mind, there are a couple things that tourists should look out for. First, do not wear open-toed shoes. New Orleans is a very walkable city and the most of the tourist attractions are relatively close to each other.
Another thing to look out for are beggars. Like he said in the video, locals here are very friendly. However, some of the beggars will try to force to give them money. Some will say things like "I bet you that I can tell where you got them shoes at!" While you might think they are going to guess what store you bought them at, they will actually say "you got them on your feet!" If they do this, just keep on walking.
Finally, many of the streets in the city are not pronounced the way that they look. If you need help with a street name, just ask the concierge at your hotel or anyone in a nearby business.
usa today
Spot on. Hubs was told not to fall for the shoes bit, and when we were at the river, he was stopped and he fell for it. Could not get rid of the guy. Cost him 10$ Other than that. I ❤ NOLA.
Hey walter! Just wanted to say how much I love your videos! I've watched virtually every single one of them and find them very informative and well presented (minus the wind, but I know that's not your fault hehe). Currently traveling is impossible for me (student loans, unemployment, and no job OTL) but when I finally do have the funds I'll definitely be using your videos as inspiration. Thank you!!
Thanks Horse san, sucks about the student loans. We are starting to finally finish off some... others have a couple more decades unfortunately :( but I hope we can help when you do get the chance to go. Traveling is amazing! all the best to you and thanks for watching!
I just love this place. I have to go every year! No place like it in the US!
Anyone ever been to the Wax Museum? Its pretty cool and spooky at the same time, but it is well worth a visit . Then there is the Ripleys Believe It or Not Museum , probably the the most awesome place I have ever been too. So much to explore and look at. I also miss going in the several antique gift shops around New Orleans. So much to see..... Greatest city ever.
Thanks for the info!! Very helpful. :)
New Orleans is the best city I've ever visited! I can't wait to go again
Very helpful, thank you!!
Thanks for the love man, 504 ever.
I couldn't agree more with everything you said!! I LOVE NOLA!!!
it is fantastic!
EXCELLENT Review!!!
new orleans is my favorite CT in the world been there twice can't wait to go back
much love from Israel
We were thinking of going to New Orleans. After seeing this video and the 5 things you mentioned one may "hate", I definitely do not wish to go and deal with the crowds, the heat and the drunks. Its far too much walking for me too and thanks for posting and helping me to make up my mind.
All of his warnings are directed at tourists who think they have to stay in the Quarter to get the "authentic New Orleans experience." That's a little like saying that Walt Disney World is the authentic American experience. The French Quarter is definitely worth seeing, so give it a few hours. But then get out of the French Quarter and see the real New Orleans. You like history? N. O. has more sites of historical interest than most cities in the United States--most of them outside the Quarter. And other things worth seeing--including restaurants that won't break the bank (there are neighborhood restaurants that would get five stars in other cities). Walk on Magazine Street. Check out South Carrolton Avenue. Tulane and Loyola are opposite a beautiful park, Audubon Park. The New Orleans Museum of Art (outstanding) is in another park you'll enjoy seeing. See the Lakefront and Gentilly. Go to Metairie (Bucktown, Fat City) or Kenner or Jefferson or even the West Bank. Or the North Shore--you'll find outstanding restaurants in small towns north of Lake Pontchartrain.
Mother of god, why would you tell anyone to visit the West Bank??
XD true but I grew up on both side of the river
Totally agree; and visiting different neighborhoods gives a much more authentic experience of what New Orleans really is. Telling people to stick to Royal and Bourbon is the exact opposite advice I give people!
rockhound2019 couldn’t have said it better!!!!
Don't forget (Frenchman St.) Oops! Lol
I have from Friday afternoon until Saturday evening. Any suggestions on the top five things to see? We'd like the Garden District and some good food. Not into the drunken partying scene. Open to ideas. Thanks for the great video.
We just took our annual vacation to new orleans this past July and it was great! Everyone looked at us crazy for bringing three kids under 7, but we had an awesome time. I just posted the video of our whole trip. I agree with most of your video although we did find a decently priced hotel at Courtyard by Marriott on Iberville for only about $150 a night. Score! Thanks for the video :)
I’m glad I’m from New Orleans to this day I live here I love it our culture is so unique 😋
Cool. Going for New Years. Cheers!!
I'll be there in September. Thanks, it's very helpful.
Highly recommended, Preservation Hall, if you like Jazz, this is the place to go. Magical experience.
I was there last year with my wife for our honeymoon. We loved it and really want to visit again. Our holiday package had us staying at The Holiday Inn on Loyola which wasn't too far to walk. I was aware of street scammers but it didn't ruin our trip
great video! much appreciated.
TheHoneyAsha Thanks Honey! I appreciate it! Have a great time in NOLA! (I know you will ;)
New Orleans is a great place, no doubt. I’m a Louisiana native, and I would LOVE for you to experience REAL Louisiana.
Great video!
You can get drunk at home, don’t waste your trip being hungover. That’s no fun. There’s so much to see and do here, what an amazing city!
God bless u and your family always. Baltimore MD 🙏
Did my masters at LSU- Baton Rouge. Visited New Orleans many times one of the fun city I have visited. Including great food.
Just came back from NOLA, one of the most amazing places I’ve ever visited
What an awesome reviewer you are =)) Thanks for sharing =))
You are very welcome Shawn and thanks for the very kind comments. All the best to you and great travels!
I’m from Hattiesburg Mississippi and am in my 40s, I used to go to New Orleans all the time when I was younger, one thing I learned from my dad and came in handy was get a motel room in Slidell most like holiday inn and budget hut are normal prices and it’s only about a 20 min drive, also when I went to just straight party I would park off of Elysian Fields close to the French market and just walk everywhere until I was done then would catch a nap in my car and drive home
Love the food, culture, music!!!
Thanks For Sharing^^
NOLA truly is a special city. I wouldn’t have wanted to grow up in any other place in the south. As my brother said “its the only place where kids get into bars when they get their driver’s license at 16.” Theres so much to love about this city, especially the food and the music.
Walter at his best. Enjoy your stay. Regards :)
Fantastic video! lol
I went to both LA and New Orleans in February, on the tail end of Mardi Gras, and the hotel was more expensive than the one in LA and I went for the cheapest one! The food was also quite expensive and there were shootings on Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras, as someone who lives in London that scared the crap out of me!
However, New Orleans is still my favourite city in the world because it's so awesome and I miss it everyday. The people are lovely, I made sooooo many friends, the whole atmosphere is incredible, the food is the best I've EVER had and I LOVE that there's live music EVERYWHERE in both the French Quarter and Frenchmen Street.
I honestly can't wait to go back!
If possible, come to New Orleans in October through April. They are the months with the nicest weather. Bring mosquito spray and sunscreen. It’s not uncommon to get above 90 degrees. Bring rainwear since New Orleans gets a lot of rain. But I love the city for the houses and hospitality. I live fairly close to the city, but I plan on moving either in New Orleans or closer to it since it’s one of my favorite cities.
Shadow Night We usually go down the first week in October. The weather is still nice, but the only thing we have to check on is LSU and Saints home games. Great city!
l've ben twice in New Orleans, one of my favorite cities, and both times l stayed at a hotel that cost just about $45 per night; and it was a perfectly good hotel, albeit without breakfast, only coffee. l emphatically agree about Louisiana cooking!
Lovely children!
Thank you!! I have always wanted to go to NOLA.
It is an awesome city!
We're in New Orleans for Spring Break so we just rewatched this video to see if we are missing anything. I can't get over the prices here. There are several tours we'd love to do, but as a family of 4 just the tickets run us close to $100 per tour/admission. It's crazy! We decided to spend on restaurants and do "self-guided" tours other than one ghost tour. I am really surprised by the prices.
Groupon!!!
Save money and then go : that’s what I do
Stay in the garden district and go downtown on the street car. There's a little bus route along the river front that connects with the street car. This will probably get you every where you want to go for 3 or 4 days.Bon ton roulet.
Way helpful video, especially the car/parking advice. We'll be going the first time this year -- what do you think about visiting New Orleans during the Christmas Season?
I was out there Halloween weekend 2017 & the early October 2016. Love the city. Parking was not bad but then again I'm from Chicago and Chicago parking is bad
Cafe du monde is so good!
I have it every Saturday :D
The Best!!❤️
Appreciated hearing your comments and those posted, we are going next week and I want to check out the zoo, Ripleys and the Wax Museum! Thanks to the commenters for sharing.
Cindy G Thanks for watching and reading. The commenters can really had a lot more info. so glad they helped too :) all the best on your trip!
Love the video
I managed to get Holiday Inn and a Mariott for $80 to $100 per night. They were both very good and close to the French Quarter.
Being from London I didn't notice the prices.
Were those winter prices?
+JMMT7022801 1 time on April and another time in August.
How can I get 100 dollars a night at marriot ?
I was at the Empress Hotel on ursulines Avenue it was pretty cheap. I went in the first weekend of June during the oyster festival.
It was a s******* but I was going by myself and I just need a place to crash for the night.
i've been there 3 times you caputeed it perfectily
Cafe Du Monde has a lot of locations. Do a google search and find one that is not right off Jackson Square and you will be able to walk right in and enjoy your beignets and cafe au lait with little or no wait. Several locations in the quarter, one in the CBD and others around town.
I’m from Nola
This is pretty accurate
Good job
Swamp tours are really awesome in NOLA!
First time going to Nola I'm from Los Angeles..loved the city..the people were friendly and the food was great..the city has a unique vibe..people say the city is ghetto but honestly me being from LA it didn't bother me have an open mind carry yourself properly and be sure to get off bourbon street and hit some of the local bars which are on the outskirts of the French quarter
Love your video. My Husband and I will be going fo our first time for Mardi Gras and to celebrate our birthdays, so Its nice to see a person say the bad and good, I almost changed my mind because of all the negative things I had heard fro others, but we arent heavy partiers, so will stick to Royal and Not Bourbon st, LOL
Suzanne we are temporarily living here due to my husbands job, before I got here I was convinced I hated Bourbon St and everything on it. I'm not a drinker and drunk people drive me crazy. First night I was here I got drug to Bourbon St and I loved it. There is a lot of drunks but they are on the move and didn't bother anyone. I've been back a couple times and haven't seen any trouble. Just don't go venturing off on side streets at night and I prefer to go during the week when there's not as many people. If your going to come here, I wouldn't skip Bourbon St. This is link to live web cam on Bourbon,I watched it for hours before coming here. www.earthcam.com/usa/louisiana/neworleans/bourbonstreet/?cam=bourbonstreet
jbdmtt Nice to hear from a local, So what do you think of Frenchman street and the music?? We are staying on Royal at a private rental so will be immersed a bit in the neighborhood rather than in a hotel setting. And is it hard to get a taxi during Mardi Gras? LOL We are excited to visit, but so many questions that are getting mixed answers . Its like asking a magic 8 ball, LOL each answer is different from each person.
Suzanne M Smith Honestly, go for a horse drawn or bike carriage, not a taxi :)
My wife and I went over Labor Day weekend, neither one of us had been there in 15 years or so, love the city and lots to take in, but he's right about the crime, keep an eye on your stuff and don't carry a purse(or at least with nothing of value in it). While taking a picture and not paying attention for 5 seconds, my wife had her purse stolen on bourbon street (at the bar fat catz) the first night there. Made things pretty interesting for her trying to board the flight back home without ID, but we eventually made it. However, definitely great food, blues and jazz, history and sights, just keep an eye on your stuff!!!
Nice place, nice sharing 👍👍👍👍
Can we also add the stench of some of the streets? Its the heat that makes it worse. I stayed in the Cornstalk hotel and it was just amazing. The French quarter has an old world charm to it and I think thats why people like going besides the voodoo, ghosts and vampire tours.
Rent a car... check out Plantation Alley, and many of the small communities across the bridge... totally sweet. Take the time to book a serious meal at August by John Besh... that's how to eat
Thank, man. I’m planning a trip.
Napoleon House is a great restaurant in the French Quarters!
Hey you should come in Christmas time people are really nice And around that time it's filled with great things And activities And when you go again (French quarter ) take a ghost tour it's fantastic
Advice for coming to New Orleans, bring lots of sun screen and bug spray. There are *a lot* of mosquitos here, and it gets extremely hot.
I was just there last week. Only thing that bit me was a horsefly, but we didn't go on any bayou or plantation tours.
...and the gigantic flying roaches. Roaches have citizenship in N. O.
great tips mate...
From Melbourne, AUS
Sunny C thanks Sunny!
There are court yards years ago before the hurricane where breakfast was served at private homes. How romantic years ago to eat in a court yard
.
❤ I love New Orleans.. amazing city 🌹
Born and raised in nola. Some hidden gems: escape rooms, Riverwalk, Jax brewery, Harrahs casino, rooftop pools / bars.
