- In May 1940 Rommel's panzers lurk on the eastern bank of the Meuse River, searching for a crossing. The French have blown all the bridges...or have they? At the town of Houx Rommel's vanguard finds a way across and must establish a tenuous bridgehead on the western shore. In today's 28mm wargame, Keith and Greg battle it out at Houx to see if the French can drive Rommel's advance elements back across the Meuse! Join us for a Quick Strike AAR as we explore a critical moment in Operation Fall Gelb, the invasion of France.
This Quick Strike is sponsored by PICO ARMOR! Our guys have several 3mm Pico Armor armies and you can see these fantastic miniatures in one of our earlier Quick Strike AARs, Operation Martlet! This is great! I want to play some small scale ww2 scenarios now!
We used to do almost EXCLUSIVELY skirmish-level WW2 gaming in the club many years ago. So that's a real nostalgia kick for us now. Always fun to play and so many great options for rules these days.
Who sells those WW2 miniatures used in this quick strike.
You guys looked like you were having a blast! Makes me want to blow the dust off my minis for a game of DH.
It was fun and involved a lot of swearing on my part
I've never done minis--long-time cardboard wargamer--but I have to say, this video caught my attention.
I've been to Houx and Dinant where the Germans crossed the Meuse for a battlefield tour. The reason the 5th Motorised were ineffective was that they were on a hill position set back from the river by about 2miles. A place called the Heights of Wastia.
The weir crossing the Meuse now has been completely rebuilt and is a solid concrete structure with a footbridge over the lock gates,
Further along the river at Dinant you can still see the launching point where Rommel loaded his tanks/vehicles to carry them across the river.
Oh wow, very cool. That would be incredible to go and see today.
Great game chaps. Lovely table as well
Love this small scale format! Great battle report!
Thanks! We try to mix in some shorter length reports with the longer ones just to try different styles.
Love Pico armor. I've been buying from them since around 2015 and I'm so glad to have seen them on RUclips now! Please keep making Pico related game vids! And thanks for the 10% off 😁
Great batrep, beautiful figures, terrain and presentation!👍
Thanks, Phil! Keith's 28mm collection is gorgeous. He's a very skilled painter.
Oh Corap!!!!!
Ha!
Heh, I see what you did there. Nice.
The first thing I thought of when I saw his name was there was one too many "o's".
Nice to see some Early War action for a change, instead of wall to wall late-war Panthers. Nice table and figures and a fun battle report.
Great patrol/platoon size action!
Love seeing Keith's WW2 figs, he did a super job painting them
Thank you kindly!
Well, what a nice video to watch with my morning coffee. Short and snappy! Thanks, guys!
Lovely game, figures and terrain were fab 👍🏻
You're tables always look superb. I like the candy jar dice holders on the shelf as well. Thank you for an entertaining jaunt into history.
Looks like you had a ball Gents!! Many Thanks 👍
Great video, it was fun to watch.
I was expecting a crossing of the Meuse. However, this was an excellent scenario. I am putting together a France 40 campaign in 28mm BA. Nice terrain and a big improvement over previous games. Well done lads!
The subtitles are awesome! The 7th Pandas lmao!
Looks like a great table!
Great Game Guys!!! Can’t wait to take the rules for a spin.
Good report, mate.
Great battle report !
I was somewhat shocked at Keith's headlong charge down the board with the MC Squad and unsupported AC, until I saw in the scenario the French only have 3 turns. Did I miss it, or was Keith not able to use his off board 60mm mortar and HMG (and how does an off board HMG work)?
Yeah, the French really need to motor to get their objectives and hold them. I used the railway berm to shield me most of the way to the first objective but then ran into trouble. I did have the 60mm offboard and did use it but it didn't make the cut in the video because in this case it didn't do much. Especially once I got stuck in. You can use off board weapons to target a point on the table. The fire starts off less accurate but can be dialed in.
Yeah and how does the defender spawning mechanics works? I think my question was deleted for some reason... Would really like to know more about Disposable Heroes. I watched the review but I still have so many question.
Misread, you were asking about an offboard MG. You can set a field of fire with an offboard MG visible from a table edge (it is assumed there are multiple MGs supporting a frontage) and then fire into that area, creating a beaten zone. This can be shifted too. It allows an offboard MG to fire at units in an area or snap fire at them if they move through it. It really gives MGs an area denial capability
@@IronIvanKeith Thanks for the response Keith! Interesting idea about the off board HMG(s). I don't know the nuances of the DH2 rules, but my gut feel is with only 3 turns it's tough for the French to leverage all of their assets in the best tactical manner. You should play it again with Greg, and switch sides!
@@IronIvanKeith very accurate too, I remember in my infantry days the support platoon could mount their machine guns and do something call map prediction fire up too 3k away and saturate an area with machine gun fire , almost like am indirect fire mode for machine guns.
Lucky Greg. Nice battel report.
VERY lucky indeed!
This channel is awesome.
Good Game!! Loved seeing the Motorcycle troops, they don't get enough screen time IMO.
They're so fun to use. You can get out of trouble as fast as you get into it
Loved it and ythe figures
That was a real Corap shoot!
Ah hah! See what you did there…
I think a massive stalingrad or kursk wargame would be awesome!
Great bat rep. I really enjoyed it. But it was a lot of hard work building that table for just a couple of infantry squads to run around on.
It was all modular
That 'Houx' pronunciation hit harder than a MG42
Oo, that hurt.
Great work! What a fun report. Random subscriber vote: let's see some Team Yankee! I'd love to see your take on it.
We have played Team Yankee! Dave ran an Iran-Iraq scenario with that system at HCON this past November. We'll have to see about a video....
absolutely! i love that game!
Wish had some good mini options down in Australia… at least those with working websites
Crossing the Muse is alwssy a great senario.
All hail the roman consul gregorianus the master of diplomacy
Grabbed the scenario before coming here...Now I just have to get some 15mm French and Germans (I refuse to touch 28mm for Games Workshop related reasons) and see how this works in Nordic Weasel Games "Hammer of Democracy" or "Five Men at Kursk"
i play skirmish, company, and battalion level games all using 15 and it's great. The minis don't film as well, with my skills, as 28mm, but they're a blast to play with
Hey super cool short vid I love it but like it would be cool if you could like do some more bolt action
If you check their review video on it and the reviews they put on their website you would understand that they really don't like Bolt Action. Shame I think it's a solid game for player who are experiencing miniature games for the first time or played only warhammer 40k before.
I want to play this
The scenario is free, so you certainly can!
I'm not sure I understand the defend mechanics. You have to call somehow where your troops are before they appear? or you spawn them wherever you want? Or is it similar to deployment point like chains of command? In the video it just seemed like Greg made those troops appear on the fly.
What minis are you using?
Great video as always, but, ooh, I'm gonna be 'that guy' about those Meuse and Houx pronunciations! How do you get those sounds from those letters? 🤣
I love their videos, but ouch. As a londoner I can feel francophones' pain - I would imagine this is similar to being asked where "Lie-cess-tor Square" is (although I really can't think of a real life example when this has actually happened!)
@@harrymaylam7111 Or indeed War-cess-tor-shyre Sauce, as in "Jeeves and War-cess-tor" lol
Well...I hate to admit we aren't exactly known for our French language skills around here....
@@LittleWarsTV I speak only from the privileged position of not having to try on a public broadcast! Rest assured, my attempt would be just as terrible.
What I should have emphasized here more is that this was a cracking wee video, and I always enjoy seeing the stuff published by you chaps. So many thanks indeed!
@@harrymaylam7111 Pronouncing things incorrectly has become kind of a schtick with us. Not a good one mind you lol
Thank you for the compliments!
post scriptum would blow these dudes minds and save space in the house lulz
I've played Post Scriptum and Hell Let Loose. Pretty cool games. Still, FPS games just aren't my thing any more. I used to play Day of Defeat competitively back in the early 2000s and it was a great time. These days I enjoy analog gaming much more for the painting and terrain building. I don't have the reflexes I used to
@@IronIvanKeith yes i hear you. and i get what you are saying and completely respect that. i forgot about the reflexes. this game is slowed down enough i can keep up. any faster and id rather do this deal here. and do something more slow pace and that doesnt bring out the caveman in me. thanks for you sharing your view as i forgot about how as we age we dont care for such fast paced things
@@AmishHitman73.Archive I love your user name by the way. Being from Lancaster, I get a big kick out of that
Do you guys have any tips for getting people into these games that don't really have any appreciation for the history itself? I've been building a collection of Bolt Action for the last year but I am hoping I can some how convince my friends to enjoy playing.
I think without the interest in the history/tactics/equipment, you can try to appeal to their interest in mental tests or storytelling. Some may also be attracted to the modelling aspect.
Someone should tell pico armour that their website is broke, when you click on WWII on the home page it goes to world war one.
Keith's dice luck has not been good for the past 6-months. Greg, get this man some scotch.
I think it's going on a year now at this point. Might as well add some gin and tonic too 😄
@@IronIvanKeith at 6:35 I noticed markings on the bases that were painted on. Not sure if those were your or Greg's minis. What do you use those to signify? Separate squads? was thinking of doing something similar myself.
@@DeePsix501 Good eye! I paint a band of color on the back of the base and then add contrasting lines for squad numbers. So first squad is ( I ), 2nd ( II ), and 3rd ( III ). Command is national colors.
@@IronIvanKeith Thanks Keith! Looking for ways to keep my squads organized and that caught my eye during a recent watch.
Hi amazing table !! What is thé scale ? 1:100 ?
Hey can you do a painting video of painting German soldiers
but Dinant is in Belgium, I think there were French soldiers defending it by that point but still
Correct, and yes, because French units were there defending that section of the line at the time as part of Plan Dyle
Just made my order with Picoarmor!
Planning to run a Russia vs Ukraine scenario based off the real life events going on right now.
what rules are you using? I am using Modern Armor from Walter Moore Games (wargamevault). I had to gen up the NLAWs that the Brits sold the ukrainians. Similar to a javelin (tandem warhead, top attack) but much shorter range, 800-1000m, but are soft launch so can be fired from in a building.
@@orbitalair2103 I’m looking around for a suitable rule set. I’m looking for something that’s on a battalion on battalion scale.
I’ve consider also just making my own rule set
What rules are you using
How similar are the rules to Bolt Action ?
Since I am the author, I can proudly say: not at all similar
Engaging game. Would love to another Game of Keith - This Very Ground.
We'll have to look at doing one sometime this year
what game is this called?
Disposable Heroes II
What game is this
Disposable Heroes II
Are you sure this was in France? According to me Houx is in Belgium. I find no city/town named like that in France. You speak of 'french forts' I guess the french never built any bunkers in Belgium.
During the French campaign
The bunkers mentioned in this battle report were manned by French units and the fighting was done by the French army in this sector as part of the campaign so that's why we describe it that way.
Why do the weapons look like they are way to big for the troops that carry them?!! I'm Andy not Annmarie!
Crusader miniature style, they are more on the cartoon side of ww2.
@@armchairwargamerz357 Thanks for the info! I'm more into the realism of Airfix miniatures for example!
Regards,
Andy
@@annmarieblanc6363 Airfix, if I'm correct don't do 1/56 or 28mm scale right? An equivalent to Airfix style in 28mm would be Perry miniatures. I myself prefer an in-between to cartoon and realistic, I found that realistic models are a bit too easy to break, they are great for diorama, but to play with I'm just not gentle enough I guess.
Wargamer You do make an excellent point! You are absolutely right, they ARE more for dioramas rather than wargames! The scale I was talking about was 1/72 scale!
Regards,
Andy, Annmarie's husband
I do love your content.... but I don't like how the germans where painted as the good guys. (Or maybe it was just me?)
I don't think the way I painted my French was that much worse than the way I painted my Germans in this game...
@@IronIvanKeith Pretty sure he doesn't mean your paint job...XD anyway...The German are the one doing the offensive over the muse so they are the one pushing the narrative in the historical setup, but you seeing them being the "good guys" I guess it's just you.
The Germans are most certainly NOT the "good guys" in this war. No question about that. But we generally steer clear of politics in our games and just have fun rolling dice. No one in the club objects to playing a wargame as the Germans, the Soviets, or any of the other bad actors in this war (or take your picks of bad actors in any given war...). We actually have a video on the channel where two club members talk at some length about "Playing as the Bad Guys" in a historical scenario. Sadly, history is full of bad guys.
@@IronIvanKeith no no, the minis are painted brilliantly.
@@LittleWarsTV I understand. I may just be a little to sensitive to just this. (My grand grandparents fought on the wrong side, and I feel it is a black spot in the family history)
"It's a rough start for the french...." And what else is new?
Meuse - pronounced Merz!!!!
I'm convinced that no matter how we pronounce French names someone will correct us. We stopped worrying about it
When are you guys going to wargame Ukraine v Russia?
If only Americans can say Mause properly.
It’s pronounced Mers not Muse
Play the game without the history lesson.
Nah.
Hahah well said. Nah, indeed.
