wow destiny child won over TLC, and Lauryn hill, that was one hard ass category. That right there tells you destiny child was really hot the time. I have to give these ladies their props.
I remember this. I was surprised too! Out of all the acts nominated, TLC was the most successful act and was the hottest group around with their third album FanMail and #1's No Scrubs and Unpretty. They did win a MOBO also for Best Video so they didn't go home empty-handed, but TLC charted better internationally that year so it didn't really make sense.

Belize2787 Yeah but not nearly as big as TLC or the Spice Girls. Around this time Destiny's Child would get nominated in many of the same categories as TLC whether it be the Grammy's or Soul Train Awards and TLC always beat them. That's why I was kind of surprised. But if I'm not mistaken TLC took home awards this year at the MOBO's for Best Video and Best International Group which is probably a step above winning Best International R&B Group.
DC was bigger on Europe than TLC. They had more hits than them. You are talking about American awards, MOBO's is UK based.

Latavia was the spokesperson for the group back then, that's the reason for her doing most of the talking during interviews and accepting awards.

The one time they won over TLC...Every other time they've been nominated together TLC won
The nominees were all really good, used to listen to all of them.

Wow 😳 I didn’t know DC beat TLC and Lauryn Hill in any world category during that time. Once they won and they played Bills, I could see it then. Bills went #1 and probably was bigger over seas but they was a good nomination. Nothing but talent!
DC were always loved in Europe but then beating TLC and Lauryn back then was a surprise. Although it might have to do with the fact TLC did not attend these awards and did not even record a thank you speech when they won Best International Video later this night, so it's cool Destiny's Child in attendance and clearly excited and thankful got this one. Both Fanmail and Writing's On The wall were amazing albums and so was Lauryn's but she won everything that year anyway.
