The best guitar live performance period you will see. Dave Gilmour is one of a very few who can play the guitar as an extention of his voice. Welcome to the long rabbit hole!
Back then, Pink Floyd filled the Earls Court seven times within 14 days always with a day off to check the gigantic equipment and I saw this concert 1994 in Cologne's soccer stadium, together with 75.000 fans. With my 60 years now I have been to dozens of partly very big concert events but what I was able to experience in Cologne has beaten everything. At that time a good friend of mine lived about 500m as the crow flies from the stadium and could see the arena directly from his balcony. He later told me , when the block with the encores: Wish you where here, Comfortably Numb and especially Run like hell - ruclips.net/video/0dB6MQlFLu8/видео.html - was played, the whole stadium looked from the outside like the colorful glittering spaceship at the end of Spielberg's "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" after landing, because the light show could of course be seen from the outside through the distances between lower, middle and upper stand. After nearly 2 hours of watching and hearing it was clear to me that there is probably no more or better. And of course the overall experience of light and sound is inextricably linked. For example, when the sphere was still closed, it rotated and turned the stadium into a huge disco by the spotlights directed at it. When it opened, lasers were directed at it from various positions, reflected by the mirrors on it, which in turn were reflected back by mirrors fixed around the stadium roof and other mirrors distributed around the stadium near the ground, creating indescribable effects, while at the same time the spotlights on stage produced a light orgy beyond compare ! You can't see this lasers on the concert video because they made these setups only in stadiums and really must have been there because it's literally indescribable ! In the preannouncement of the concert it was promised that, regardless of where one´s position in the stadium is, listen to at least stereo if not even quatro. They implemented this advertising promise in such a comprehensive and impressive way that I will never forget this bombastic sound experience together with this indescribable light show. And to this day, when I hear "Comfortably Numb", especially during this inconceivable guitar solo i get goose bumps all over my body and it leads me to another dimension - EVERYTIME❗ Emotions without end - ruclips.net/video/HX_du6Gcp1w/видео.html Many wonder how the name "Comfortably Numb" came about. David Gilmore had injured his back shortly before a concert, whereupon a doctor was requested. He gave him an injection against the pain and something to relax the muscles. After the injection, he suddenly felt exactly the way he had felt as a child when he was sick. His hands felt like two filled balloons and overall he felt very very pleasantly dizzy after getting medicine. The problem was that with this feeling in his head and of course in his hands, he had to go on stage to play a concert. What can we say, the man is a professional and still rocked it out 👍
In an interview released in the 80s, Waters said that much of the song comes from something that really happened one evening when, in order to allow him to perform in Philadelphia, the doctor gave him a sedative for a severe stomach ache, which had probably caused by nerves. On the stage, his hands were numb and his vision blurred, but none of this derailed the crowd, who continued to dance and sing. And it was out of this that one of the main themes of The Wall came about: the disconnect between the public and the band. “ That was the longest two hours of my life, trying to do a show when you can hardly lift your arm.” Roger Waters
I was lucky enough to see Pink Floyd twice, this song was the final song each time. It is a shame that people just discovering Pink Floyd will never get the chance to see them perform live. One thing that sticks out to me is when that "disco-ball" was lit, I would look around at people's faces in the crowd and for a brief second a face would light up as the reflection hit them. Seeing the look on different people's faces was a wonderful thing to experience, they were happy and enjoying the experience. I don't know why, but that is one of my bigger memories of seeing Pink Floyd.
I love your reaction, definitrkt SORROW next, same concert. Then try these awesome songs from that same concert also: COMING BACK TO LIFE, LEARNING TO FLY, TIME, HIGH HOPES, RUN LIKE HELL, SHINE ON YOU CRAZY DIAMOND. All epic!
David Gilmour can play a single note and have it sound sublime and grandiose; this is his greatest skill!! As far as vocals... he does exactly what the song needs; nothing more nor less!! Overall? It's never been about how phenomenal he is... it's been ALL about how tastefully he uses his voice, guitar effects, string bending techniques, finesse and style!! Is he the greatest guitarist ever? No. He however takes you on a journey with him, the song and his guitar!! Pink Floyd & Gilmour are The G.O.A.T. Pink Floyd was formed in 1965... their (most likely) last album was "The Endless River" in 2014. PF had 15 studio albums... 3 live albums, 9 compilation albums not to mention multiple live dvds and solo albums performed by below members of the band. Syd Barrett (short-lived founder; guitar plus) the originator and quirky eccentric; inevitably the consequential muse. * January 6, 1946 (rip 2006) Roger Waters (bass) was the cultivator (seed sower), the lyrically conceptual prodigy, secondary vocal and co-maestro of songwriting * September 6, 1943 (age 78 years) David Gilmour (guitar) was the placidity, guitar virtuoso, the silky smooth voice and co-maestro; the equilibrium. * March 6, 1946 (age 75 years) Richard Wright (keyboards) was the essential underlying symmetry; musical nurturer. Occasional singer. * July 28, 1943 (rip 2008) Nick Mason (drums) was the heartbeat, structure and foundation; the sole member involved from the emergence of PF to the last recording. * January 27, 1944 (age 77 years) FYI: The following Pink Floyd albums are Concept Albums (all songs together tell a complete story)... Dark Side Of The Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977) and The Wall (1979). The Final Cut (1983) is ify, as it was the last album with Roger Waters being in the band - leaving in 1985. *search on Wiki the album title to get the story behind the concept. I myself suggest the following EPIC 10 live songs; the studio and "Brit Floyd" versions are phenomenal as well!! : 1) "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" 2) "Hey You" 3) "Us and Them/Any Colour You Like/Brain Damage/Eclipse" (all 4 parts) 4) "High Hopes" 5) "Time/Breathe Reprise" 6) "Dogs" 7) "Sorrow" 8) "Pigs (3 different ones)" 9) "Welcome To The Machine" 10) "The Great Gig In The Sky" 11+) There's so many... !! Fun Fact: "You don't need drugs to enjoy Pink Floyd but you definitely need Pink Floyd to enjoy your drink and drugs!!" If you like Pink Floyd as much as it seems, sadly there is only ONE WAY you're going to see their music "live" in concert (2021+) other than an older dvd (or maybe Waters or Gilmour solo in concert; they're getting old my friend)... more importantly hearing the songs done exacting to the studio albums adding a very good example of the "live" light show... you may wanna check out the following group that's IMO far better than a tribute band!! The subsequent track is superbly performed by the tribute band "Brit Floyd" ~ Gilmour, Mason and Wright have said, "If they themselves wanted to see PF live, the only way that could ever happen is go see these guys." ruclips.net/video/RnHu3D8stGE/видео.html (one song from an entire 155 minute concert of PF Bliss; see comment at link for other tracks) Final Note: Pink Floyd have left us the embodiment of their musical journey to share, enjoy and reflect upon. * always listen to Pink Floyd with headphones or an awesome sounding music system. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pink_Floyd = = = == === = ====== = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Roger Waters (Bassist; he left PF in 1985) and Friends did a live concert of the entire "Wall" double album in Germany (1990) right after the wall came down; very historic!! I am White and I grew up on this song. I married a beautiful Black woman and I played this song for her and she broke down. She was so upset that she had never heard this song before. Amazing how Pink Floyd can touch so many souls
@@giftymartin2063 that was one full show each night for 15 - 3 hour shows. These guys would sell out a stadium in under an hour in most big cities and then have to add one or more shows. They did that in 1994 in the Phoenix area because Sun Devil Stadium where they perform sold out in under an hour, 60000 tickets!! So they announced the second show The Following night and sold it out again!
The song is inspired by Roger Waters being ill before a concert and the doctor giving him a shot to help him through it . His arms felt numb and he could hardly play his bass guitar. In the movie however it takes on a slightly different meaning as the main character 'pink' is completely out of it emotionally and physically , partly due to substance abuse etc . The beauty of Pink Floyd is you can interpret the meaning as you see it while listening. As mentioned they sold out Earl's Court in London for 15 nights X approx 20,000 people . They also sold out every other city they went to, sometimes doing 2 nights in each city to 50,000 upwards. This is regarded as the best ,most emotional guitar solo ever . Cool reaction
