Just picked up a copy on eBay for $4! Me and my cousin use to play this game back in the day, he’s no longer with us, and I just want to play it again in his honor.. Game on friends!
Apocalypse was more of the ONE rip-off with Bruce Willice and despite the fact it was good for me it was never near the ONE in terms of gameplay divercity and overall quality.
I feel like this game had a lot of things in development that were cut when the game got released. Very little story too. All we get is that you're some guy with a mechanical left arm, and the police are chasing you. Why? Nobody knows. How'd you get that mechanical arm? Nobody knows. What was up with that creature that had mechanical spider legs in the Sea Lab? Nobody knows. Who's this woman John Cain (the guy you play as) mentions at the end? Nobody fucking knows, not even the people who made this game. Also, I honestly have no idea why this game wasn't called Rage, or something like that, instead of One. Both are pretty generic, I understand, but One really doesn't help the game stand out at all. Literally, just try googling the game, you won't find much, it's THAT obscure.
The baseline story of this game is absolutely genius! You wake up, you have no idea why you have this equipment and function like this physically, plus everyone is after you like nuts. Such a plot has so much potential. Unfortunately, I don´t think they gave us a good-enough answer of why all this was happening. They left us with too many questions at the end.
It reminds me of the plot of an indie game called Iji. Main character wakes up with alien equipment only she can use, in the middle of an Alien invasion and has to stop the aliens with no help. Underated hidden gem just like this ps1 game on the video, but in Iji you get a better explanation xD
It's a shame that Visual Concepts only makes sports games nowadays. This game shows how talented they are/were. It was one of my first and still favorite PSOne games!
Steve Normandin For me, it's also that gripping feeling of everybody hating and being against you. They fight you, you don't know what you've done wrong, but you won't back down. You'll fight back. I love this! I can totally relate to this feeling and atmosphere in real life. I often feel everyone is against me for no legitimate reason and I have nothing to lose, hence me not allowing them to throw me down.
Beat it today, I love how the first three levels look. Especially the second one, but the back half of this game doesn't look nearly as good in my opinion. The base feels too clutered with details for pixelated PS1 textures
@@PS2GAMER100 I remember it being above average in difficulty, it had more to be with the clunkiness of the controls than anything else (those parts in the canyon level where you have to use the transporting line and the boss fight above the train were really complicated if I remember correctly)
@@thewindthatblows Yeah from the video it does look bad control wise and like one of those games that would make someone rage quit Lol I was interested in this title after finding it on a video on ps1 games and wanted a new game I haven't tried yet but may give it a shot to see if I can get a hang of the controls on my android phone 📱
My Brother introduced me to this game he was suck at the Beginning because he couldn't make that Big Jump. I got him passed not only that jump. But the entire rest of the game. If he ever needed help he knew who to call lol.
I remember my dad renting this from blockbuster and I was the only one beat the first stage. Then we returned the game of course. Is this still worth playing?
This game starts so heavy your running from a chopper that shots missiles and before the level ends there's this one fighter ship that has heat waves and your jumping form small platform to smaller platform
I love how everyone trying to kill him fail to realize that the angrier he gets the stronger he gets...maybe instead of trying to kill him they should be trying to calm him down...
I still have this game, though my PS1 and 2 are long dead. Stage 5 was brutal and as far as I ever got without a code. One day I was really in the groove and managed to get to the end of the stage with a ton of lives, but I lost them all on the boss. So frustrating. All you have to do is be able to keep your feet on the path. I gave up after that stress fest, although I did use a code to at least try the next level.
Anyone know of a game kinda similar to this that I played on a demo disc from a playstation magazine (PS1), I think you had mines or rockets? on L1/L2. In the demo stage you were kinda running through a big city and there was a lot of lock-on from wehat I remember, maybe you had missiles or something. It MIGHT even have been co-op but I'm not sure. If it rings a bell please lmk, sorry for the awful description but I barely remember it.
I played this game as a kid when i was 9. for the life of me i couldnt pass stage three. i would be on it for hours trying to figure it out. never actually did it though. its crazy it was so simple
Similar concept to Apocalypse and Expendable, but Apocalypse had better controls for DualShock. Second stick could be used for shooting direction. Also it pushes the PSX hardware really hard and there are slowdowns when it's too much going on on the screen. Still the game is pretty nice.
Am I the only one who can relate to this game and its story on a personal level (real life)? If you don´t know what I mean by that, I´ll explain it to you.
All right. Have you ever had this feeling that everybody in the world is against you and nothing you do will satisfy them? They will criticize, ignore, dislike or even hate you, seemingly no matter what you do. And you have no idea why because you give your best to treat them well and not to get them any reason to dislike you. But you don´t give up and don´t let them keep you down. You hold on to your ideals and don´t let them crush you and what you believe in. You´re also looking for the answers on your way of fighting against at least this perception of yours which might be a true realization. I often had and still have these emotions, which is why this game gives me goosebumps. John just wakes up and he suddenly sees himself as the most wanted person ever who everybody hates or at least views as a danger great enough that negotiations aren´t possible anymore. Still, he doesn´t give in to them keeping him down, no matter what their problem with him is. The mystery of why everyone is seemingly against you itself is another theme that gives me chills in this game. And its music perfectly portrays all of the aspects I just mentioned, in my opinion.
Vanishing Stone Bro thx for the explanation. Now i understand. It's like the real life and you have to keep fighting. I had some of these moments too...
Yes, exactly! You´re most welcome. I wonder if anybody else had this sensation about this game when they played it. Or even today just watching the playthrough.
"Try achieving a perfect rank in each stage..." Why do I get the feeling if anyone out there DID manage to get perfect on every stage, it just ended up being some Contra 3 bullshit? Btw, yes, I DID try to get perfect on each stage. Couldn't do it, try as I might.
I found the controls pretty good. I honestly never get all these complaints about the controls in various games. I hardly had any problems with the controls in any game so far.
The camera during the spider boss from level 5 is a fucking nightmare I think the game should have changed the controls for certain sections, the battle with the red robot you need to drop a container on while you ride a train is really annoying because wanting to step back causes the entire character to rotate and takes the camera spinning around him, making it really difficult to destroy the container in addition to how sensitive the aiming gets to be
*I lost my CD copy of this in the 90's... The best PSX software ever created, it spools off that disc as if it was a NeoGeo RAM cart. Take out the disc, then the game cannot buffer the rest of your level. Weird... I had thought that Midway had made this game.*
"I made a mistake"
Epic intro plays.
Played this one back in the golden days, underrated, awesome, badass!
Got it on my PS Vita now.

One of the best games and underrated gems of PS1
Aleksandr Kovalenko also apocalypse! awesome third person shooter so similar to this game! two underrated gems on the ps1

Different games I know but I'd like to add Overboard!, Kurushi, Kula World and Smash Court Tennis
One of the hardest too
I agree!
Probably the first game I played where it felt like a movie
Rage Level Maximum. That's how I feel everyday when I go to work.
You're not the only one pal. 👌🏻👿

27 years later and this game still looks and sounds amazing. This was one of the first PSX games I bought along with Wipeout.

Oh yea man. Me too.

One of PS1's hidden gems to be sure. So glad I was able to pick up a copy after so many years of wanting it.
The game is called ONE and the Longplay is 1:11:18 seconds long? SO CLOSE! XP

Miss this game it deserves a remake for sure
Came here in 2023 to say this game is still underrated.

What Contra SHOULD'VE been on the PSone. Instead we get Legacy of War. It's a crime, I tell you.
Are the credits supposed to be silent, or are they supposed to play a CDDA track and your emulator isn't configured to play CDDA?

I LOVE THIS GAME!!!!
Yeah, right. This reminds me of Apocalypse.
Apocalypse was fun, and Bruce Willis did make the game enjoyable.
this game is so epic its ridiculous
awsome i guess im not the only one who things this game has what it take for the next gen
This is a game Platinum Games needs to remake.
Never finished this damn game. It was hard but very cool.
Should a sequel be called "Two" or "One 2"?
What do you think why the game is called "One"? If you can solve this "riddle", then you know what a sequel would rather be called.
do you known the special charging move?
This game feels like a badass Arnold Schwartznegger movie
im trying to get this game remade and expanded
Good luck
How is it going so far?

The rage meter mechanic of becoming more powerful by constantly shooting enemies and objects was so satisfying.
Aye it was so good rebuild to ps3 and Expand.
and the worst part is that theres no known rom to download for this game.

3D Contra?
So it's essentially Contra with a different View
It's been said one of the dev team's inspirations was old side-scrolling shoot-em-ups, so perhaps that is what they were going for in a sense.
