Like Taj Mahal, Koh e Noor and Dilip Kumar, Tom Alter is a shared pride of India and Pakistan. His contribution to Urdu is fathomless. God bless his soul.
We came to meet tom sir at his home in mussorie but his brother was there . He himself was in Mumbai 6 7 years ago. Your house is so beautiful surrounded by nature. Tom sir was a great person
This interview is so touching. Tom Alter's Urdu teacher..his friend at Pune was my classmate's uncle. I saw him and a young Mrs.Alter once crossing the Koregaon bridge near St Mira's College. My sister and I were so elated! I don't know why we always felt so close to Tom Alter. His demise was sad . Today I felt very peaceful after viewing this interview of his true better half. My regards to you mam.
I have a candid confession to make ma'am. I saw Sir on celluloid when I was just a kid, but he was a huge crush of mine. Years later, when I was in college, I saw this tall, blue eyed, exceptionally handsome guy stepping out of a taxi, right in front of me and crossing into some building, into oblivion, and it just skipped a heartbeat of mine. I was actually seeing my crush live. A dream to materialize soon to break into reality. Incidentally, years later I just happened to read about Sir, his wife, kids and family, and well I don't know how much I respected Sir, though I surely did, my respect grew multitudes after I read about him. His love for India, zest towards society and the hunger within too learn things unbiasedly, love for his family everything concealed in lots of respect for Sir and his family alike. I'm just so glad to have the good fortune to hear you too. Love you always
Ms Carol, 40 plus years of friendship!!! God decided to bring two loving souls together to bloom and spread the love and affection in this world. It was you who stood with him (not behind him) to fulfill his each and every wish in his life. While listening to you, I guess that Tom was like a jumpy, impulsive kid with immense amount of energy; You held him to your heart and directed his high energy in the right path. Family and social pressures did not dampen your goals. He dropped out of Yale but you were a solid rock beside him. Two of you as a couple possessed certain values, ethics and morals which you both followed intently and honestly. When he declined offer to advertise for the alcohol company, you embraced him. His interests in sports, athletic pursuits were wholeheartedly supported by you. I am sure you both agreed on how to raise your kids. Giving them the same teachings, they carry the torch today of high values and ethics - Jamie is a fine young man and Afshaan is a fine young daughter. As you said, hard work is equally important to be successful. You channelized Tom's hard work ensuring that he is successful. I admire you more than Tom. Your sacrifice is equally important in his life as well as kids' lives too. When you spoke, it seemed that you are a low profiled person who quietly does the job. Without overpowering and using harsh words make certain the work is done.. In short, Tom and you complimented each other!! I came to the conclusion that this is a unique couple who cared for people around them, followed their quests with devotion and zeal and showed it to the world that success is not measured in terms of money but love and compassion for others carry a long long way. Tom's light will keep shining forever. God bless you all.
Tom Alter, after this memorable recollection of a life so richly lived, must have been a complete man, a full human being, a real Indian in many ways. Alas, we know so little about this wonderful common man, a true beacon of civility and humanity. I hope he is a liberated soul today. मोक्ष मिले उन्हें .
I am so heartened to hear you speak! What you said about Tom’s observation of Americans is so apt now in India for last few years ! We( my husband and I knew him as we shared a fence with FTII . And later seeing his plays admiring his Urdu and energy ! Not just theatre and film but many who came in contact with with him even if once . Thanks as you are th best person to talk about him and that era ! 🙏
