nope and I think there will always be fires up here. hopefully we can turn it around sooner rather than later cause it's gotten pretty bad the last few years. though I do find it odd how arson(whether it be accidental or not) has risen a lot the past few years. We also should be done with this current El Niño (warmer and dryer than average for a decent chunk of canada) and transitioning into an La Niña around august(which should bring colder and wetter than average weather). It'd be nice to see some public service announcements and/or ads (remember the house hippos telling us not to believe everything on the internet? like that, lol. or the recent anti-vaping ones) for people to clean up after themselves thoroughly when outdoors, especially when you have anything that could start a fire. Personally I'll bring some herbs with me camping and I can already see someone carelessly tossing there roach or bowl out.

As for the safe injection kits and drug testing centers it’s largely due to the opioid crisis in Canada.
You should google that if you’re interested in understanding the drug segment. In BC alone in 2023 over 2,500 people died of toxic drug overdose. Mainly due to fentanyl or tainted drugs being introduced to the streets. The kits and safe/testing sites are meant to keep the people with addiction a little safer from overdoses or toxicity poisoning. While of course drug addiction is an issue, one that our governments have been struggling to get to the heart of for years. At least intervening on this level will hopefully help addicts stay alive, need less EMR/EMT intervention, and out of hospitals.

When Americans see drug use they see dollar signs... because they can put human beings in cages and corporations can make money of them. That is why the US has 3% of the world's population and 25% of the world's prisoners.
You can just look at the stats. The US has the worst crime in the Western developed world, despite being the most hard assed about drugs. Social issues need to be dealt with using social programs. Turing social issues into criminal issues just creates an entire underclass of perpetually impoverished people who are statically more likely to fall into addiction and commit crimes.

That incident with Gatineau police is NOT an isolated incident. Some Canadian police are of good character but many are not. Police are rarely disciplined, fired, or jailed. At most they may receive a temporary suspension and allowed to keep their jobs. Quite predictably, I'm instantly on alert (as are many Canadians) when I see the police. I try not to make eye contact and some times I'll just cross the street. You never know when you'll run into the wrong one. Here in central Alberta on the weekend, opening your windows or going outside was like sticking your head into a campfire. The smoke was strong indeed. It was reported that northern Alberta had the worst air quality in the world due to the fires.
The seasons seem to be getting reversed in AB - one used to stay inside in the winter due to extreme cold, and enjoy the short but beautiful sunny summers. In the past 4 or 5 years, we're often shut in summer due to the smoke, and the winters are getting warmer and it's much easier to get out.

There was a separate piece of legislation which did introduce dental care for those who don't have dental insurance through their employer and can't afford it out-of-pocket. So the dental issues would be for those who could not afford to see a dentist and many would be at, or more likely below, the poverty line.

Substance abuse is a public health issue. Treating it as a criminal activity is counter-productive, un-constructive, and doesn't address the root cause of substance use. Many can't get past that its drugs so would rather arrest/jail people than offer treatment. Once they have a criminal record it gets even harder for substance abusers to recover. Some jurisdictions like BC have rightfully decided to treat this as a public health issue (de-criminalize) but have gotten strong kick back from segments of society who just want to punish people instead.

The drug thing is a recognition that drug use is an illness not a crime - so the idea is, SELLING drugs is a crime, go after the sellers, but for the users, provide anonymous free rehab for them if they want it and give safe locations where users can get clean equipment and a safe spot to use drugs [generally I believe the idea is that using drugs in other places would be a minor offense but using the drugs in a safe place is legal and there are people on duty to keep an eye on people to reduce the risk of ODs]
It is very controversial and although there are a number of variations on the idea, I believe in all cases, dealers are still breaking the law and can be arrested and jailed, but users are encouraged to get rehab and until they do, as long as they bring their drugs to a "safe" place they are not asked any questions and can have safe disposable needles, etc, and someone around to make sure they don't OD.
I've heard a lot of mixed things about it. As it isn't something I have a direct interest in, I have not kept up with all the details.

This nursing shortage issue in Ontario is because of Ford's conservative governance, during the beginnings of the pandemic he cut funding to Healthcare. He and his cabinet ministers are still to this day trying to cut funding to Healthcare.
His government is currently fighting in the courts a back pay for female Healthcare workers who where proven to be paid less than their male coworkers.
I know about this because my mom is was a psw and she would be one of the people getting some of that backpay, her union and some of the other Healthcare based unions (not sure which ones) are working on the case with their lawyers.

Some of these fires are actually from last year. In Western Canada especially, we've been suffering drought conditions for a long time with much lighter rain and snow over the winter. As a result, fires can smolder under the soil surface all winter and reignite when the weather warms up, which seems to be earlier every year.

The nursing shortage story is an Ontario story. The government involved is not the Canadian Government (Federal) but is the provincial government. Provincial governments have certain jurisdictions such as education and health care is one of them. The money comes from the federal and I think provincial tax coffers.

Until recently, dental coverage was not included in provincial health plans. Now that it is, people are finally visiting the dentist that they may not have seen since childhood. Children up to the age of 18 have basic dental care, and up to the age of 25, have prescription coverage. Thankfully, our seniors also have prescription coverage with a minimum co-pay based on their income.

The purpose of safe injection sites are to provide clean needles to addicts. This helps prevent the spread of diseases like HIV and hep C. In the governments opinion addicts will use drugs whether illegal or legal. Their view is to keep the public safe from these types of infections. It's a hot topic with valid points from both sides.

Safe injection kit are given out by many agencies in Ontario. It has reduced dramatically the number of HIV cases and hepatitis cases because people are not sharing needles if they can get some for free. Alcohol swabs, reduce the risk of infection at the injection site. Some cats even include vitamin C tablets, because IV drug users also tend to be vitamin C deficient.
Naloxone kits are also available for free at every Ontario pharmacy. Even if you are not an opioid drug user, or know one, it is still good to have one on hand. You never know when someone will overdose in front of you. I keep mine in my purse, thankfully, I’ve never had to use it. So I replaced it when it expired. I also let it be known in my apartment building that I have a kit in case anyone needs one, so it can be administered while waiting for paramedics to arrive.

Wildfires are ongoing every year. Sometimes started by ppl, sometimes by lightning strikes, sometimes by accident, sometimes not. It's like the California wildfires but across the country. (Majority on the western side)
My local hospital had the highest mortality rate for a few years (I haven't seen the numbers for 2023) mainly because most of our funding, equipment, and workers are sent to the capital of NS instead of other places that need ppl. I know there's other places that have similar problems, our health care system needs an overhaul.
They have a safe use center here, in the middle of town, and the needles are usually left on the ground. Great for tourism.

Wait until you find out how many family doctors we need! When I was in college in the mid-90s, we were training nurses and the job postings board was full of American hospitals recruiting nurses with incredible wages, and signing bonuses that you would never find in Canada. Especially after the pandemic, many nurses left the profession after finding themselves burnt out. Many retirement or long-term care, facilities, refuse to offer full-time positions because then they would have to pay benefits which led to many PSW‘s and nurses taking multiple jobs at multiple facilities. This let Covid spread even faster among these facilities because they were taking the virus from one home into another. Ontario nursing facilities had one of the highest mortality rates anywhere during Covid because of old HVAC systems, windows that wouldn’t open, shared accommodations and sharing staff with other facilities. This is one of our biggest COVID failures. You had President Trump, we had nursing facilities. Covid was a wonderful time to live in New Zealand!

Initially, the federal government contributed about 50% of the funds needed to operate the system, but successive governments have cut the financing down to about 22% of costs, and most provincial governments are running a permanent deficit because the feds are not pulling their share of the load.

Yeah, Canada has been having high drought seasons over the last few yrs, to the point they haven't put out past fires, that have dug in deep, so crews can't get a break, then face evacuations in the spring time. They do give courses for fire safety. They used to do wisdom teeth in the hospital back in the 1970's which was covered under medical then they pulled out of people being able to get dental care done in the hospitals due to making room for more serious patients, then lack of nurses has been building for 2 decades least that's what was told back then. It was suggested that giving the safe needles sites would prevent disease, they could move them to the PNE make safer places to go, make work programs rehab programs bottom line is, they have to want to quit.

Sometimes fire will burn through the roots of trees, becoming what is called 'zombie fires'; although they're mostly embers, if they get access to the outside they'll flare up, like opening the door to a room you left a lit candle in, or if they get access to another tree, they'll completely burn through it and start the spread of wildfires all over again. If I got something wrong, pls correct me ^v^

The reason Americans are aware is because last year smoke affected US cities, New York City specifically. If the smoke had stayed in Canada (like it usually does), US media wouldn't have mentioned Canadian wildfires at all. So far this year, 730 fires have been recorded with 1.47 million hectares burned. There are currently 87 active fires with 6 out of control, 15 being held, and 66 brought under control. There are ALWAYS wildfires burning in Canada.

Decriminalization has worked wonders in other countries, see Portugal for an example.
Safe injection kits, safe injection sites, drug testing kits, and similar efforts are a cheaper way to deal with addicts who aren't ready to go to rehab than jail, emergency medical attention, or lifelong medical attention would be. It doesn't mean that efforts to provide rehab options don't exist or lose funding in favour of these measures.
