According to Collectors Weekly, the first windup teeth were Invented in the 1940s by Eddie Goldfarb. He got the idea after seeing an ad for a denture holder called the “Tooth Garage.” Goldfarb had an image of a pair of dentures walking down the road like a car, turning into a garage, and parking on their own.
In 1949 Yakity-yak talking teeth, commonly known as chattering teeth, were born. They made their official debut in 1950. Made by H. Fishlove & Co in Chicago, Fishlove was the original gag novelty maker founded in 1914.
Fishlove is still selling novelty items, games and toys. You can follow them on Twitter @hfisholveco
Here are the 8 versions of the chattering teeth in my wind-up toy collection.
Red with pink feet. I dropped this one while I was taking it off the shelf for this video, so now it’s Injured and not working 😢 Made in China.
Orange with eyes, fangs and black feet. Jumps when wound up. Made in China.
Red with black feet. When wound up, these teeth jump and the eyes move. Made in China.
Want A Bite? These dracula teeth have a sticker on top asking if you want a bite. When wound, the teeth stay in place while the mouth quickly opens and closes.
This unique set of teeth are yellow with eyes and a rose between its teeth. The feet are green, and they dance the tango when wound up. Made in China.
These classic-looking teeth have a sticker on top that says “Chatter Teeth.” (Just in case there’s a question as to what they are!) They’re so fun to watch as they quickly chatter while moving haphazardly. Ja-Ru Toy Company, Jacksonville FL Circa 2015. Made in China. jaru.com
The only teeth in my collection that are operated using a key. Classic design, they chatter while moving backwards.
