    Domestic turkeys are tricky to successfully breed to say the least. The larger the breed, the greater the challenges. Midget Whites are like bantam chickens, you just let them have at it, and they go out in the field, and bring back a clutch. The giants (BB Whites & Bronze) are often most difficult. We always bred the smallest tom to the largest hens, and that gave us best fertility. What a pleasure to view your hatch!

    Bourbon Reds have been on the top of my poultry list for years, it was your first upload that we put things off so we could better educate ourselves. Showing failures so others can learn is the best way to educate new farmers.

    after my girls Ginger and Khira got snatched by Coyote, I found Khira's nest and saved 10 of the eggs to the incubator. of that 9 hatched last week and they are doing great. my other hen Lucy nested in the horse trailer so had protection from predators and she hatched out 4, now she's running with her mate Bubba and the poults.

    Hey folks! Thanks so much for your video. It's funny AND informative. We just got 7 reds, (The Magnificent Seven) and we are in love with them. They are really friendly, but it looks like when the mommas start sitting on eggs it might get dangerous. Anyway, best of luck to you and I hope to see more videos from you. Imparting the serious knowledge, like how to get the eggs fertilized to begin with; what kind of other accommodations should we have for the birds (we saw you have a building but what do you do for them outside?), etc. Thanks again! 👍

    • @North44farmstead
      @North44farmstead  9 месяцев назад

      Thanks so much, Digital. Congrats on your magnificents, you will love and occasionally hate raising bourbon reds 😉. Their instincts are as intact as wild turkeys, so you have to micromanage your hens come nesting time or they will nest in ludicrous spots outside their parameters. For outside the barn, ours have a large fenced in pasture complete with grapevines, apple trees, and huge lilac trees they love hide and dust bathe under. They tend to disrespect our un-electrified poultry netting, so if you can afford to electrify then DO IT! Also, if you're breeding, your poults will be stronger and healthier if you have a tom from a different bloodline. We run two bloodlines on our farm and it has drastically cut down on poult loss. Hope this help, keep us updated on your progress and welcome to the farm fam! 🤎🦃

    How often do they lay?
    How do you start a couple, who will make eggs?

    • @North44farmstead
      @North44farmstead  2 месяца назад +1

      They lay in the spring until they have enough to sit on, then start up again in mid-late summer to hatch again for fall. Your best bet for breeding is to get an unrelated pair to start.

    Hello, by any chance is there a way I can have my male turkey lose weight. I'm in a similar predicament in trying to breed my broad breasted bronze turkey and any feedback would be greatly appreciated 😊

    • @North44farmstead
      @North44farmstead  Год назад +2

      Hi Blazing, are your turks in a situation now where they can forage? Winter is tough, they pack on some pounds from lack of movement and eating mostly grains. Now that spring is here, giving them a larger pasture should get him moving around for exercise and eating less grains and more grasses and bugs! You could also bring in some fruits and veggies to supplement until the pasture is more lush. My turks love apples and tomatoes.
