    I started on Cotman and love them but do get a higher colour load than what is shown here, probably due to the fact I spray the paints at least 10 minutes before use. I have other professional paints now including Daniel Smith, Sennelier, W and N professional and more. The W and N pro's are my "dependable" set along with mission gold. I still have my cotman because the box they came is fab.

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  7 лет назад +6

      The box is indeed fab! :D
      Cotman is a good learning tool and I have fond memories of using them as my first "real" set ever. They get left in the dust fast though, which is a shame. They'd be awesome sets still if the paint in them was a tiny bit better.

    I could not agree with you more. I regretted purchasing my W&N Cotman travel set when I first started my foray into watercolors, two years ago. Great unbiased review though. Thank you!!

      Thanks! :)
      It's a good box to reuse though! Remove the paints, replace them with your favorites and you have a pretty neat little set to carry around and not worry about dropping on the floor :)

      I have several Cotman travel boxes, and am trying to use up the paint in the pans so I can refill them with professional paints. Think the boxes are generally well designed and worth reusing.

    I love this video where you showcase the small details and discuss and demonstrate the differences of how it performs against other brands. There are so many options and I’m just starting to explore watercolours so these are the kind of things I wish to know about.

    First, thank you. You continue to set the bar higher for me in my own video-making skills. This is a beautiful video with incredibly vibrant visual content. Also, your narrative is always packed with vital information that seems effortless as you present it. As I'm learning, there are a lot of (for lack of a better word) "posers" on RUclips presenting information that is incomplete, scripted as though they're reading off a website, or just wrong. You bring such valuable experience - and genuine curiosity - to your work, that it's so easy to relate to. I feel like I'm discovering these paints with you, not just being shown what they are. Second, with regard to the paint set, I personally don't like student grade anything, anymore. I've tried to use W&N, but I always end up regretting it. You nailed it with the weak load. ugh. Lastly, thank you, again. It's just a pleasure to enjoy your work. Cheers, always! :)

      Hi Mark! Thank you so much! :)
      I try to keep at the forefront of my mind that my videos have to be fun for me to make, that's really the primary focus. Sometimes I think about super technical things or doing a loooot of research and then I realize that those things are less "me", and that they make me unhappy. I do some research of course, but through making videos I realized that my interest is really in a practical approach and understanding how things work. I try to keep "true" to myself so I think that helps my videos, too.
      As for student-grade supplies, I mostly agree with you. Some supplies are surprisingly good, but nothing has ever been better than the pro stuff. :)

    I love the small cotman box. I do not like the cotman paints. I took out the half pans and filled the spaces with tube paints. I do not like water brushes. Whenever I go out I use the smallest container from a GoStak for my water and bring a travel brush. Your videos are awesome and I love your sketches.

    • @EveBolt

      Thank you!! :)
      I prefer a real brush and water as well, it's easier to control. I tend to also remove my Cotman paints from the small sets; I store most of them in a Cotman box I really don't like and the rest in a bin somewhere. The small pocket boxes are the best part of this range :)

    I would love to see more illustrated journal videos 😍 I enjoy watching you paint. 🙃 hehe
    the pages you painted came out great (even though you greatly disliked the paints)
    I have the Cotman Sketchers’ Box set. I liked them at first and didn’t notice anything wrong with the paints... until i got a set of White Nights paints. I haven’t touched the Cotman set since. Haha

    The white film thing with turquoise pan is apparently a normal thing. It happens to my turquoise no matter how many times I use it; the film will eventually develop if you don't use it for awhile. Doesn't do anything once put on paper, so it's fine.

    my first watercolor set that i bought like, 6 years ago was a cotman set. probably bc theyre available pretty much everywhere, and it is quite appealing to see a cute little set of colours for 15€ and just grab it. i didnt paint much with watercolors, so they served me well the first few years i had them. but now that i know more about watercolors, i wouldnt really recommend them to a beginner because now, there are paints out there that cost just as little money as the cotman, but are nicer to use and with a higher pigment load.

  • @CyaneInkArt
    @CyaneInkArt 7 лет назад +6

    I recently used Cotmans in one painting and I was so surprised how weak the paint were! I normally paint with QoR, so difference felt huge. I also find Cotmans really hard to activate, they take so much brushing and water to relase pigment. But I love old Cotman set box, the plastic is like meant for watercolors. But it is sad that Schmincke half pans don't fit in this box, this would be great travel set.

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  7 лет назад +1

      I was surprised too! I hadn't touched my Cotman paints in years. Somehow in my memory, they weren't as weak. From Qor to Cotman, talk about a drastic change of strength in the pigment load.
      If you have Schmincke tubes, you can fill generic pans and those will fit into the box. And I agree, W&N has the best (-and WORST-) travel boxes!

    This is such a thoughtful, thorough and well presented review of these paints. I'm glad to see them compared to the professional grade W&N paints, and the other brands. The color mixing was nice too. I think I've seen a different box design on Theo's site. He seems to like these paints for his urban sketching but maybe he's swapped out paint colors. His box seems to have a reservoir for the paintbrush as part of the LID of the box. Not sure how old his is. AS much as he paints I would think he prefer Artist paints. I guess you could eliminate the pans and just put paint directly into the wells.
    I am happy you showed the bottom of the box, (I didnt' know it was like an Icecube tray), tried other paint pans in there and that is all very helpful. I am just a beginner trying out with Prang set of 8. If you were to advise a Artist quality paint set to someone in the US, what brand do you think you would suggest? I think I am mostly interested in painting nature, trees, flowers, animals. Not buildings and people so much, maybe someday. Small buildings, like a barn in a field or a windmill, but not big city scapes. I don't even want to be in a big city.

    Thanks for another great review! I am not a fan of the paints for the reasons you describe, but I do like their palette boxes. You and Mary Owings and I all agree on the Daler and Rowney Aquafine watercolors - very nice! I love how you hit all the fine details of the products your review, very thorough, but also enjoyed your art journal! Love your cartoon art! When I bring one cat home from the vet the one left at home usually growls and hisses at the one coming home with all the strange smells from the vet's office!

      Hi Paula! I hope you are well!
      The Aquafine paints were a really good surprise! I wish I had had access to them ages ago when I first got into watercolors... ;)
      I think it might really be the smells from the vet's office too, though they do that when we bring both to the vet's as well. Then again, they are just cats, so I don't really expect from them that level of discernment.

    I just spent the last four days struggling with the cotman pocket box. My intention was to use them up and replace them with WN pro (I do love the palette).. but I don't think I'm going to make it lol. I'm seriously thinking about trying to pry or soak them out of their pans. I started with a color mixing chart.. and the first few columns were a mess because I kept having to go over the colors multiple times.. finally figured out how to work with them (use a sopping brush to dig, then paint with that and keep going back to fill the brush again) but even so it's so frustrating to work with. It takes forever to even mix paint because you have to keep digging for pigment. It's next to impossible to get a pigmented wash.. I either wind up with a pastel or paint so thick it's hard to get on the paper. the earth tones are so weak (especially the sienna). They also seem to dry extremely fast? So one mixing chart and a paper testing project later... I've already made a major dent in most of them... so I don't think they are really that cost effective either. I will say the phthalo blue is fine but that's just the nature of that pigment, and compared to the others it's really hard to use in mixes. It's way overpowered in comparison. I do like this assortment of colors better.

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  3 года назад +1

      The Cotman paints are a toned down version of the professional version. I REALLY struggle with them, they are too weak. And to get a nice, colorful wash, we end up with so many binder and extender in the mix that the paint gets goopy. Even the most vibrant Cotman paints are nothing compared to the same pigment in a purer mix.
      Personally, I find no joy in struggling with paints so I'm in the camp of "let's get rid of them ASAP and get something better".

    • @waymire01
      @waymire01 3 года назад

      @@EveBolt Yep. I switched to some Grumbacher academy which are the other student brand sold in my local store and it was like rainbows appeared and birds sang in comparison lol. It was a bit more up front because they are tubes (I dried them first so still working from dry paint).. but it's five times the amount of paint too... and it actually works.

    I have the same opinion of Cotmans. I like my pocket plus box but have replaced most of the paints. Thanks for reviewing this set! I hadn't seen this particular one or that waterbrush before. It is odd they'd give a watercolor brush with a set that doesn't have a handle for travel!

    This video is great I find that my WNC are weak I thought maybe I was not using them correctly so I replace 2 half pans with the Artist grade WN and immediately saw the difference and now I will just order the full set Artist grade same as I did with my gouache, and my watercolor paper. I find for me that this method work in achieving the level in quality that I am trying to achieve whether I am displaying my work or scanning them into my computer without the muted colors.

    Back in time when I ordered the full Cotman studio of 45 half-pans from uk Amazon (it was on sale!) quite a few of them had this white-ish coat over the darkest colours when I unpacked everything. I think it might be from the machine it makes the sticks? I think they make those waxy sticks and let them cool and they are cut by hand to fit in half or full pans.
    Other than that, I think this set is cute, but wouldn't buy because I have already one pocket sketchers box and the 45 half pans studio. I like the fact they have a Payne's gray and a purple in this set (when I was a watercolor beginner, I found it so hard to mix purple with the colors the old Cotman box offered!), but bummed with the addition of black and keeping the white there. If it was white gouache, would've been better.

    My Cotman field set is well over ten years old. Still has paint left in it. There are no individual pans. All 12 paints are in one removable plastic tray that has a rectangular depression/well for each paint. The paints are weak and thin way too much with little water. However, all that being said, I use them over Indian ink sketches. For field work, they are just what I wanted. The question becomes, after they are about gone, what do I replace them with? I think I can find pans that will fill up the travel box, but what pans should I get? Suggestions?

    You beat me to it! I got this set a little while ago, however not to review. I also replaced the black and white with other colours. I didnt use the waterbrush when travelling as i found it didnt hold very much and was too small for larger washes. I love you style its so beautiful.

      I'm thinking this set was intended for journaling, as it sits flat on a table and journal art doesn't demand a large brush often. It would also explain the color selection. I find it kind of incomplete still, it's lacking the small water bottle and some sort of sponge to wash out the brush.

    Wow, thank you! I’ve been curious about this little box. The quality of your review is fantastic! So informative and thorough - all my questions were answered. I have the Cotman pocket box, which I love due to it’s small size. I’ve filled it with artist’s quality tube paints. My experience with Cotman has been similar to yours - it’s great that they are lightfast, but they aren’t very saturated.

    I love your comparisons to the other brands, it's really pretty fascinating and useful for people looking for inexpensive paints!
    Hilariously, I actually saw this set out in the wild for the first time this morning, and paused to consider its purchase, only to ultimately decide I didn't need another travel set, especially a Cotman one since I have the regular small set that has a lot of similar colors, and I have plenty of home brewed travel sets. Plus, from the pictures on the packaging I thought the design of the box didn't look super great.
    The I come home and find out you've made a review of the exact set? I'm glad I followed my instincts and didn't get it. What synchronicity!

    • @justkat515
      @justkat515 7 лет назад

      I do actually like my little travel Cotman set, though.....it's a well thought-out set of colors, and it was inexpensive enough that I am happy to bring it to places I'd be afraid of losing it at. The color strength isn't the best, but.....it's fine.
      Intrigued about your plan for the box, because I was unimpressed with it. It seems fine, but....not great. (Also, if you ever want a finger ring on a box that doesn't have one, there are rings that are sold for the backs of cell phones that are adhered by strong double-sided tape. They're very convenient, and some of them even rotate 360°!)

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  7 лет назад +1

      Hehe, it seems we are often in sync over a lot of different things XD
      Would adding one such finger ring at the bottom make the box sit at an angle on a table though? Would it be wobbly?
      My fav thing about this box is that I can fit generic pans in it, something that is not possible with Cotman's regular pocket set. Also, I appreciate that they make it from a good quality plastic on which the paint doesn't bead.

    • @justkat515
      @justkat515 7 лет назад +1

      Eve Bolt - Bolt's Vault I don't think a finger ring would change the way it sat on a table because they lay pretty flat when not extended, much like traditional finger rings. Here's a link to one so you can see what they're like, but there are plenty of different designs. Including ones that you can put your whole hand into for larger palettes! Phone Ring holder&Stand,COCOFU 2pcs 360°Rotation and 180°Flip Universal Finger Ring Holder/Grip/Kickstand/Mount,[Washable][Removable]Zinc Alloy Finger Loop for iPhone,Smartphones and iPads -Space Grey www.amazon.com/dp/B073DWXYBK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_YejKzbBTQZ5QV
      Have you had a problem with generic pans not fitting in boxes that also use pans? I can see having an issue with things like the Sakura ones where the paint has a smaller amount and they are in plastic molds instead of half pans, but I suppose the disadvantage with that type is obvious from the start.
      I suppose when you look at it from the point of view of an empty box, it is okay. And it's inexpensive enough that, like the prima watercolor sets, buying the paints ends up being worth it even if you really just want the box. Although the prima paints are genuinely surprisingly good and I didn't end up cannibalizing my Tropicals set even though that's why I originally bought it.

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  7 лет назад

      I have the regular pocket box by Cotman and (unless I'm mistaken) generic pans don't fit in that one. I can't really try it at the moment because it has paint directly in the box itself. The smaller W&N pans annoy me in the metal boxes since they don't clip well in the trays and they are so small.
      I think with Sakura, one could pop out the cakes from the flimsy mold and put them into empty pans. The mold itself is relatively useless. The Prima paints are good, though I ended up removing them from their box and storing them away.
      The ring looks really neat and could work well on a box, especially since paints don't really care about magnets. I'm possibly outdated but I'm still wary of bringing a magnet anywhere close to an electronic device.

    My first watercolour set was the cotman 45. I was so excited to get it. A lot of people use it in the crafting world and this was before the glut of watercolour sets for crafters appeared. I did use it for a while but I didn't enjoy how much work and paint it took to make a vibrant colour.
    That being said I am thinking if digging it out after 4-5 years as I have been learning to paint transparent layered flowers and it might be a way to use them up. I don't like the thought of wasting them. Even my daughter prefers Mission Gold to the cotman 😂
    I also have some of their professional tubes and as not a huge fan of most of them. Some of them can be very sudsy and leave bubbles on my work... Ok if I want that texture but not if you want the flat look.
    Anyway glad to see some reviewers not jumping on the WN band wagon. Daniel Smith is my favourite so far but even some of their colours are difficult. I still have a tonne more to try too 😀

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  5 лет назад +1

      The first set I bought with the idea that it was a "serious, grown-up" set was the Pocket Sketcher, 12 colors Cotman set. I used it for a long while, back when I was much younger and had no way to get better paints anyway.
      Fast-forward 20-some years, the "scene" has changed a lot and we have so much choice now. Cotman doesn't really deliver the strength I like from my paints. I mostly reach for my Holbein and Schmincke paints, and I quite enjoy the Renesans ones too!
      If you want to try layering the Cotman paints, I'd suggest trying them on cotton paper, as that would absorb the color and reactivate less the layers underneath a new one.

      I think White Nights/St. Petersburgh is more fun to use. The larger pans are great and the paint reactivates a bit more easily for some colors. It's also less expensive.

      I've noted down your suggestions for videos, thank you for the ideas! Making videos is extra hard when one is not a native English speaker, but it's also good practice :)

    Just a question, I have both cotman set and an aquafine set, basically same paints but different palettes to the two you have shown but I noticed that my aquafine set has a strong waxy smell so that prevents me from using it often. Does yours also have the same smell? I can't compare it at an artstore because they dont sell daler rowney paints in my country so I purchased it online from an UK store.

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  7 лет назад +2

      I just shoved my nose in my paint tin and yes, they do have kind of a waxy smell. However, if I try to sniff them from about 6 inches away, I can't smell it anymore. Does your set come in a more airtight box? If so, you could try switching the paints to another box that is less airtight and maybe some of the waxy smell will fade out on its own.

      ROFL!! Shoved your nose into it XDD
      Maybe I should air it out a bit. I know I definitely got the aquafine set because it was written on the packaging in giant blue writing but in the same palette as their simply line (small white plastic pocket set, similar to the cotman sketchers) and I was worried I didn't get the one that people were raving about on youtube.

      I've never tried the tube Cotman paints, perhaps those are better? Maybe there's less filler and binder so that it's still a liquid... But yeah, underwhelming is the right word.

    So many people use Cotman that it is tempting. The 45 pan large set is so pretty. They do look weak and hard to rewet though.

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  7 лет назад +4

      They are. I think you might be better off buying the White Nights set of 36 full pans instead of the Cotman 45 half-pans. It's less expensive and the paint is a lot less frustrating to use. They both come in near-identical boxes, too.

    My first watercolor set was the Cotman deluxe sketcher's box. It is just like this set but with full pans and a different little metal brush. They were so hard to work with for me as a beginner that I had to bite the bullet and spend a bit more on a Holbein tube set if I wanted to keep working with watercolour.

    As always you give such through reviews! It's great having this information to share. Before I never would have really considered Van Gogh or Aqua Fine watercolor paints.

    I'm currently looking for a watercolor set that won't break the bank and that has reasonable pigments. I have experience with watercolors and paints already, but I'm struggling a bit with the cotman set I have. Do you have a set in mind that is relatively good but not too good just better than W&N?

      lemi bruwer: I would suggest the Sonnet set of 24 from the WhiteNight folks or Qor. Both have amazingly heavy pigment loads and vibrant colors.

      As Gwenneth suggested, you can get a nice little set of White Nights full pans paints at a good price (the 12 colors full pans set is under 20 USD - you can check these out at Jackson's : bit.ly/2vT7QDM ). Sonnet is made by the same company but it's their student range. The Aquafine set I have by Daler-Rowney also has good paints and it's very affordable.

    My comment is spectacularly unimportant, but I wonder why the Cotman PG7 is called 'viridian hue', when the artist PG7 is 'winsor green BS'.

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  7 лет назад +4

      It's a good question! I'd prefer it if they named all of those "Phthalo Green BS" so as to avoid any type of confusion (I once bought 3 pans of PG7 at the same time because I didn't know any better and they all had different names). Viridian Hue is an ok pan of PG7, but since they call it a "hue" it cheapens the color a lot, I find.

      This set is really not worth it, the paints are much too weak to be a valuable addition to any watercolor collection.

    The color selection is pretty nice since there's no white and blacks, But I agree with you, in terms if the color quality in student grade paints, I think Van Gogh is way better than Cotman.
    The advantage of Cotman watercolors is that they are literally everywhere (availability) and I gotta admit they (Winsor & Newton) design some of the most cute travel palette sets 😉
    From what I saw in the video, is the new Cotman 12 set box the same size with the Van Gogh 12 set?

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  7 лет назад +1

      Well, there was a black & white but I switched those out. I just never use them. Especially Chinese white XP
      The boxes are very similar but the Van Gogh one is thinner and a bit larger.

    My first set was the Winsor & Newton Cotman 45 set and I loved most of them when I first got it. I could make vibrant colours and mixes but I had nothing to compare it to. When I got more into watercolour I bought a pack that had the Daniel Smith essentials and Primatek 5ml tubes as well as the full dot sheets. That was when I discovered how bad the Cotmans were. They are great for craft projects I guess but to get that vibrant colour payout you need to use a lot of the paint. I have expanded to a few other brands as well, DS, WN professional, Mission Gold, Van Gogh (not really played with these yet, got them super cheap in Bali) and a set of Jane Davenports. I love my DS paints they are the bomb but extremely expensive here. I think even the vibrancy of the cheaper Jane Davenports is better than the Cotmans. I have buyers remorse for the Cotmans but luckily I got them fairly cheap at the time and I didn't know any better lol.

    Haha, I've been eyeing that box since quite some time. But I definitely don't like Cotman paints. They're exactly as you said, weak and very unsatisfactory to work with. (And I definitely don't need yet another watercolour box.) But the Cotman BOXES are lovely. I really like their smallest pocket box which I have filled with Schmincke tube paints after chucking our the Cotman pans. The blue metal palette box is lovely, too, and their large sets of white plastic are OK, too. It's just the paints that aren't as nice as other studio watercolour pans. Have you ever tried the Schmincke Akademie, and if yes, how do they compare to the van Gogh (lovely!) and the Daler-Rowney?

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  7 лет назад

      I have never seen the blue metal palette, but I generally agree with you. The regular pocket set and this set here have really good boxes, but I also happen to have a Painting Plus box for 24 half-pans and I hate it. It's one of those with the cartridges for the pans and since you can't easily buy extra cartridges (at least, here) it's a hassle to figure out. It's a pain in the butt to open and it's clunky at best.
      I would LOVE to try Schmincke Akademie but I just can't buy any. It's not sold here and Jackson's doesn't have them. If I see them though, I'll make sure to at least grab a few pans so I can compare :) It would be a video, for sure!

    • @UTleochi
      @UTleochi 7 лет назад +1

      The blue box is basically your generic metal palette, but it's painted in a pretty cobalt blue. It might have been discontinued, though. I think W&N only offer their Cotman range in plastic boxes. If you're interested you can see a photo of my blue box here leochi.deviantart.com/art/Watercolour-Boxes-449735486
      I've never seen the 24 half-pan Cotman box, so I wouldn't know. :D
      The way you describe it, it does sound a pain, though.

    I like the sennelier and scminke student grade paints. Schminke is light but not like the cotman. I think they are just muted. Never did care for cotman.

      I haven't tried Sennelier's La Petite Aquarelle or Schmincke Akademie, but I'm glad they do better than Cotman. Mind you, Cotman sets the bar pretty low.... ;)

    Every time you put in other pans, I got so nervous that they'd get stuck! I've never tried Cotman and I'm glad I never did. Doesn't seem worth it.
    It's so funny that your cat hates the car and meows to let you know it! Mine also hates the car but tries to get really low and stays super quiet instead. Maybe it's the new vet scent that makes your cats fight after the vet?

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  7 лет назад

      The Cotman paint in half-pans is really not worth it. Especially since you have access to much better stuff (Daniel Smith and M.Graham, just to name two).
      My two cats; Scout meows (or grumps) when traveling and the other one hyperventilates and panics. She squishes her face in the grid of the cage. It could be the new scent, but that also happens when we would bring both to the vets so I'm not sure. They're back to their regular sisterly love/hate thing, fortunately :)
