For people who never saw Shaq play, I’ll give you a perfect example. Remember when the Kawhi Raptors team built a wall and stopped Giannis? Ok. Now imagine Giannis actually bull dozing thru that wall and carrying all 3 defenders to the hoop and getting an and-1 every single possession… that was Prime Dominance from Shaq.
Well, the difference also is that shaq still had a nice offensive game. That little baby hook and floater, especially after a hop step or drop step made it really tough, and he was decisive in the post and was a decent passer too. Giannis doesn't have that nack to the basket game or touch, especially back then! 2019 he was strictly driving yo the rack, so the wall worked.
Shaq was pretty much bigger and heavier than almost everyone he played against. It’s easy to talk about being “physical “ when nobody matches you with weight. He was basically Mack truck down there. You’ve seen that size go down over the years. Nobody is close to weighing what Shaq was back then.
@@blanktrigger8863 how would he foul out??? He was doing that every game. We can’t put Shaq up against these rules because this ain’t his era. I’m trying to paint a picture for the people who have no clue what Shaq really was doing.

He often compares players based on stats that weren’t adjusted to match with current eras. With that said, I love his takes on the game and I have a ton of respect for his career.
Shaq is talking about the difference of earning a point and getting a chance to make a point. It's just a sample of what the next generation thinks, don't earn it because they deserve it.
Does Shaq have the ability to think dynamically? Tired of this only caring about physicality and clotheslines in the 80s. Respect todays game like you respect all the others, these playoffs have been great.
Shaqs speaking facts. The rule changes and nba is watering down the league. The league was better and more entertaining to watch, just was. NBA is promoting soft basketball, now all the players are complainers which lebron even identified in his new podcast. Shaqs right tho, and we all know it.
@@jcreature11bro sounds like a parakeet not an original thought in this whole comment. AI generated generic response about the game before and today no evidence whatsoever
With racism…Listen to you. Bet you’d say there’s still racism in the NBA today too. Stop feeding into today’s fake racial problem. That’s all you’re doing. And yeah, I’m sure there was some racism back then, but at least black kids had a real family and the father stuck around and provided. Now it’s just mama. Mama’s a single mom with 4 kids and 4 different baby dads…if not more, all while collecting government assistance. Smh. I’m with Shaq and you need to man up. Check your plastic intake because I think it’s messing with your testosterone-it seems to be low.
"Real physicality" in Shaq's definitions is the type of physicality that get called flagrant fouls, which I think is nonsense. Physicality in basketball should be being able to defend or attack vigorously with body while not trying to punch each other in the face or being physical that is basically a flagrant foul. It's basketball not MMA. You win by getting the ball into the basket more than the opponent while also preventing the opponent from getting points, not by messing each other up. Also, let's be real, the old generation of NBA were only physical and more defensive in the paint and not in the perimeter or beyond the 3pt line, which in today's NBA, you see players getting doubled and tripled beyond the 3pt line.
Just like what JJ said, there's a clear distinction between fouling and actual gameplay. if being physical means fouling, especially flagrant fouls, the NBA players of today would exploit that physicality and just get free points by getting free throws. Fouling should not be the first thing that comes into mind by players when the term "physicality" comes in, since committing fouls just gives free points to the opponent. Imagine the best player on your team is "physical" in shaq's standards, and end up getting ejected, eventually causing the team to lose, is just bad.
I would love to discuss this with Shaq bc I see him make this argument all the time. What Shaq speaks of is “Dominance” the continuation of being dominant. What JJ is describing is Dominant, where you can describe a singular performance as such. Shaq displayed Dominance throughout his career and he is recognized as the most dominant force in basketball. Dwight Howard at his peak in Orlando was a dominant player. It’s semantics but I believe it makes sense when you are clear in that fashion. Let’s talk Shaq! My uncle played At LSU the final four year and help recruit you. And I played under Ron Abernathy my brother, let’s go! Lol
So glad JJ is calling games now. Watching him call all the Pacers games this year was fuckin awesome, he has such an interesting way of explaining things Also I can’t believe Inside on TNT is ending this year…. I still don’t believe it’s real
A hard foul is a part of the game because is now becomes mental. It makes players think before driving to the basket. That shot may not be taken now. It’s mental.
I don't know how you view the word dominant. But the only sense where the word really fits onto a Basketball player, is if someone, meaning the other Team or the defending player, has to Change their usual playstyle or stategy to mess with your game in order to keep the "dominant" player in check. Meaning, you need to change your regular game because someone forces you to do so. And therefore there are many ppl like Shaq, Prime Lebron, Jokic and so one who could be considered "dominant players"!
The NBA was definitely more physical in the 80's and 90's. The rules have changed to open up the offense so naturally teams have drifted more toward pace and space. You can't hand check anymore like you could in the past. The game is more finesse now
Here’s something that is sad. Shaq is a 7’1 mvp with 4 rings and he is so uncomfortable in his own skin. I think this is because he knows the only person who stopped Shaq was himself he should’ve been the goat, but that doesn’t mean you have to discredit what guys are doing today. “Could they play with us” who cares? They make way more money today and score way more points so why would they want to play with you guys? That’s is the goal because the goal is to be an excellent player in the time that they’re playing.
These young guys are just as strong if not stronger due to advancements in sports medicine and training programs. It's true the league was more physical back then and allowed more contact but if you put them in the same environment, they will adapt and hang just as hard. If LeBron at his size and athleticism played by old school rules guys would get laid out.
I think they both make good points. Shaq makes a point about flagrants which does play a huge role on peoples play styles, energy, longevity, etc. JJ makes good points that they are flagrants and physicality has levels to it. Both can be correct and I think they are
I will never forget the day my father showed me how men sit and how women sit. I had the same talk with my son the first time I seen my son sitting the way jj is sitting.
Yea intentional fouls are a thing, when i used to hoop, i was taught if a player gets too hot, send him to the line to try and throw off his rhythm but its KNOWN not to hurt them too badly out of respect for them. The definition of dominate is to be the most important or have most control over something meaning shaq’s right about this. The absolute force who runs the game is the most dominant by definition
Dwight was 100% DOMINANT. Teams knew who he was and knew not to test him because he was so dominant defensively that going up against his magic team you had to be mindful of where he was if you ever attempted a shot at the rim
Wilt, Shaq, Hakeem for two years, MJ, Kobe were all dominant at various times and in different ways. One could argue that Magic was dominant in his way.
I wish players/analysts or whatever that’s stuck between the 80s and early 2000s about how “physical” they were, bro they’re not playing defense, it’s a FOUL. Shaqs man argument against players is “imma touch em up” SHAQ THATS A FOUL NOT DEFENSE LMAO
These have been some of the best playoffs in a long time, and every game has been extremely physical. Shaq is a big strong dummy, when for the most part, basketball is about finesse and skill.
‘Was he dominant? Yes or no’ You ask anyone nowadays ‘yes or no’ and they most certainly find a way to say anything BUT yes or no. Cause they know ‘yes or no’ gives a plain answer, one of which will back up the questioners question.
People don’t know what hating is anymore. You can’t hate if your better🤦🏾♂️ who can Shaq hate on when he’s top 10 all time🤦🏾♂️ he only can hate on those in the top 10💯
As much as I love Shaq, he loves hearing about him being associated with the word dominant, and it makes him look petty when Dwight gets to be called dominant when in truth Dwitght was dominant when he was in Magic.
JJ's issue with how dominance is viewed us valid...people list the best scorers of all time & don't have Bron in the list 😂...he's the greatest scorer of all-time .people may not like how it looks compared to another flashier scorer but if I literally do it better than anyone then.....
I couldn’t agree more with JJ on his physicality argument. There is a difference between playing physical and committing flagrant fouls. The refs in the previous generations, let a lot of players get away with non-basketball plays. Old heads like to use Shaq’s argument here as a way to discredit the modern NBA but the game is played more fairly now than it ever has been. My only complaint about modern officiating is the inconsistency of the calls.
Dominating and being Dominate are different. Domimating can be minimized to a single task. "I am dominating the boards" current and in the present text. Dominate is a statement of who you are. To build a roster of centers. that job was to get 5 fouls to hope to contain, not stop its different. It was a backfire. If they did not hack a shack i think he would have stayed in shape because he would not rely on his size and strength. He would have averaged more stats. He would have won more rings. Dwight to Shaq could have been Kobe to Jordan. He was similiar off court and on court. Just didnt pay his dues
dominance is simple to define, and its not about winning. cause if you talk about winning then its greatness. dominance simply means you can not be stopped whether u win or lose the game. there could be nights where your team sucks or the other team was just better, but as long as you could not be stopped on whatever it is you do, thats dominance. KD dominant scoring, curry dominant outside, shaq inside, prime dwight rebounding and defense, etc
I agree with JJ that Dwight was dominant during his best years. There were no Centers at his level during his time and he was clearly better than all of them. Like it wasn't even close, but that was a weak era for bigs. Factually, it is correct to call him dominant. He just wasn't at the level of the top bigs of the 90s or Jokic and Embiid today like you'd never consider him to win an MVP. All you can judge someone on is how they performed.
Dwight was dominant and really physical. He just had no post moves. He literally averaged 90% of his points of dunks, put backs, and free throws. Most people think shaq was just a dunk man but he actually had post moves
We forget about wilt chamberlain just because lack of footage. Shaq most dominant when it comes to physicality. Terms of dominance of the game nobody comes close to wilt
Wilt a Shaq were very similar in a way. Part of the reason Wilt was so dominant was because the average center back then was like 6'7" or 6'8", while he was 7'1". Russell was able to give him some trouble because he was at least 6'10". Shaq was bigger than everybody else, but not to the same extent Wilt was.
@@seanwilliams7655 don't lie bruh. Here are the official averages of height. Despite Wilt Chamberlain's reputation of "playing against milk men", the average weighted heights of Centers from 1960-73 was 82" (6'10); the average weighted heights of Centers from 2006-19 was 83.5" (6'11.5)
Yeah Shaq would def struggle guarding these big shooters but think about this .. shaq is gonna get easier looks to the basket if played 1 on 1 I would personally take a easier advantage to the rim then taking a 3 and I know analytics won’t back it up . And we know 3 is better than 2 but . Come on now the best look is always the better choice . So much that whatever team is guarding Shaq would have to double on him . Forcing Shaq to pass it to a most likely competent shooter . Shaq in today’s game would still be valuable .

@@phamawa but that’s what I’m saying. Shaq knocked that wall down, Giannis waited for the wall to collapse on its own. Difference in Dominant
Tell him JJ!!!... c'mon Uncle Shaq,it's not fair!🥺🍻🍺lol
Shaq is right. No need to redefine dominance. Just use the a different word to describe a different attribute
I’m a Data Analyst and I want to make it clear that JJ looks at raw statistics. He does NOT look at analytics in a scaled environment, to give his analysis. He often compares players based on stats that weren’t adjusted to match with current eras. With that said, I love his takes on the game and I have a ton of respect for his career.
And all Shaq does is compare people to himself. Only thing bigger than him is the ego
Dennis Rodman was always dominant, with low points (if any), high rebounds and steals. I'm with Reddick, it's all about perspective.
a 5 minute segment should be dedicated on this podcast, every episode, for Shaq to shit on Dwight
Shaq is talking about the difference of earning a point and getting a chance to make a point. It's just a sample of what the next generation thinks, don't earn it because they deserve it.
Does Shaq have the ability to think dynamically? Tired of this only caring about physicality and clotheslines in the 80s. If thats all we care about the 40s-50s were the best eras, they were playing behind chain link fences in chuck taylors with racism. All eras of basketball are great in their own way.
@@DamianSAAAN I’m not on here too insult and belittle, that’s just some kid shit.
@@DamianSAAAN for real lol
No one, and I mean no one, likes to hear themselves talk more than JJ. The man can talk in circles for hours. 😅😅😅
If J.J. becomes a basketball coach I m gonna follow his team the entire season.
the level of physicality is incredible😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
Watching him call all the Pacers games this year was fuckin awesome, he has such an interesting way of explaining things
Also I can’t believe Inside on TNT is ending this year…. I still don’t believe it’s real
Big man waited for the last 20 seconds to make his clearest point
This is one reason I think JJ will be a good coach, he will challenge the star players. It will start out rough, but he will earn their respect.
This is why he will be a good coach… he can challenge folks like Bron and Shaq respectfully…
Shaq need to show the new head coach of the Lakers some respect
A hard foul is a part of the game because is now becomes mental. It makes players think before driving to the basket. That shot may not be taken now. It’s mental.
I know how JJ feels. I’ve tried explaining things to my toddler as well. It’s tough.
Fouls are apart of the game
I think they both make good points. Shaq makes a point about flagrants which does play a huge role on peoples play styles, energy, longevity, etc. JJ makes good points that they are flagrants and physicality has levels to it. Both can be correct and I think they are
I will never forget the day my father showed me how men sit and how women sit. I had the same talk with my son the first time I seen my son sitting the way jj is sitting.
Shaq is without a doubt the most dominant force the NBA ever had💯 just imagine if he made his FTs at a higher rate and he stayed in shape
Shaq can never be wrong
Yea intentional fouls are a thing, when i used to hoop, i was taught if a player gets too hot, send him to the line to try and throw off his rhythm but its KNOWN not to hurt them too badly out of respect for them. The definition of dominate is to be the most important or have most control over something meaning shaq’s right about this. The absolute force who runs the game is the most dominant by definition
JJ was cooking here
This conversation is why I think JJ will succeed as the Lakers head coach
Dwight was 100% DOMINANT. Teams knew who he was and knew not to test him because he was so dominant defensively that going up against his magic team you had to be mindful of where he was if you ever attempted a shot at the rim
I like the question jj!
Thank you for asking JJ 😂
Physicality???!!! Are you shitting me??? Hey JJ you have got to be the biggest marshmallow I've ever seen!
Great point shack!
Clotheslining isn’t basketball, that sums up the video
fouls are basket ball and hard fouls make people reconsider there actions, hard fouls for psychology
@@Kevin-rh8keI mean if Shaq admittedly said he does it every night, then the lesson never stuck.
Yes or no’
You ask anyone nowadays ‘yes or no’ and they most certainly find a way to say anything BUT yes or no.
84 finals over 90 degrees in the building and they still played harder than they do today
As much as I love Shaq, he loves hearing about him being associated with the word dominant, and it makes him look petty when Dwight gets to be called dominant when in truth Dwitght was dominant when he was in Magic.
Knicks 2023-2025 is a PHYSICAL TEAM
SHAQ out here thinking flagrant foul-2's anormal slap om the wrist
They're both right
Shaq Talks Like He Is The Best Basketball Player Ever And Couldn’t Even Shoot Free Throws😂
I agree with both perspectives
dominance is simple to define, and its not about winning. cause if you talk about winning then its greatness. dominance simply means you can not be stopped whether u win or lose the game. there could be nights where your team sucks or the other team was just better, but as long as you could not be stopped on whatever it is you do, thats dominance. KD dominant scoring, curry dominant outside, shaq inside, prime dwight rebounding and defense, etc
Shaq not only a hater but he the most sensitive big dude I seen he can handle criticism
@5:57 Dwight is more dominant than Shaq. That's just facts.
Cap. Just compare accolades. Brother was not more dominate than Shaq.
What type of camera did you use for this shoot?
💯 and Shaq got a big ego. So he’s gonna talk about himself at some point in the conversation.
Despite Wilt Chamberlain's reputation of "playing against milk men", the average weighted heights of Centers from 1960-73 was 82" (6'10); the average weighted heights of Centers from 2006-19 was 83.5" (6'11.5)
Shaq talks like players were just fighting and not even playing basketball lol
dope hoodie JJ
Shaq ass would have a heart attack mid game in todays game tryna guard a big man who can shoot 3s over 40%😂
Who’s guarding Shaq at the other end? Shaq shooting at least 80% lol
Shaq is right about physicality because a lot of fouls to other players aren’t fouls on him. He literally got fouled all game and still dominated
Most of these players couldn't make it across half court with all they carrying/traveling in today's game 😂
Dwight was dominant, never forget he stopped us from getting to see Kobe vs Bron in the finals
Shaq said Joker, rick spits and sobonis 🤦🏿♂️ that had to be for JJ
Shaq doesn’t think basketball on an intellectual level he was just good at it
shaq know the difference between fouling and physicality
Only player I ever seen Shaq not truly hate is Giannis post ring
