Really great video overview on the history of .Net. It's been a crazy ride over the last 15 years. Here's to hoping for an even more exciting next 15 years!

I was a java developer working on spring and hibernate and web development with java. Later got a job as .Net developer. I was told to learn .Net and i had no idea about it. So I started to learn it and started contributing on a web app was being developed using web form. I found C# very advanced and a lot better than Java. Working with WebForms was the coolest thing I ever did. I still works on webform applications along with MVC.
I literally wanted the storyline of .Net and this lecture is just amazing.

Great video! Still fresh even if it is almost 2020.

Killing flash on mobile was not really about battery life, it was mainly so that rich apps would only be accessible on iOS via apps from the App Store. It was all about money, if you play an installed game on your phone it will still drain your battery.

Around 30 minutes in, he mentions that during the transition to AMD64 Dave Cutler wrote a paper about Windows on Windows. -- Does anyone know the title of this paper / if it was ever published outside of MS?

Wow! So they were making a better java and got sued, so C# was born.

@popasmuerf Yep, I think that's exactly what happened. Weren't they adding/changing stuff which ruined the portability?
I must've made that comment before I knew.

what I do not understand is how does open source make money for Microsoft?

I am very late for this comment, but Microsoft have changed their model. Why do you think they let even pirated versions of windows 8.2 upgrade to windows 10 for free? Because their business is no longer desktops. They are pivoting to make most of their money with Services like Azure. And by making a lot of their big name products open source, it will draw new and old developers alike to their stack. And once in their stack, they will learn that it could work seamlessly with the paid for products they offer... Like Azure. It's a long term sales funnel tactic and it's a good way to go about things, and frankly I think it's pretty fair.
