My Ampulária (mystery snail, Pomacea bridgesii) just fell over the aquarium, broke it shell from one side to another and who found it was my husky... I'm happy that my dog knows how found I am to this little snail that she brought it to me like "daddy look shes out of the aquarium!" After I cryed a little she went out of her shell a little so I know she's alive... But now my snail is broken from one side to another and will need an egg armor... I had to put her in an old deactivated betta aquarium (my new one was in order to give a better space for my betta) so my asian asian algae eater does not eat her away... Yeah i'm freaking out but your video gave me hope and calmed me a little, in 4 hours i will be able to go out and buy the super glue and will update this with news... thanks for your video

I hope to god that she stays alive

This video calmed me down so much, thank you! I recently rescued a crushed land snail. I thought for sure he was going to die, but I superglued part of his broken off shell back onto intact shell and he has survived about 3 days so far. Other parts of his shell is shattered, but it looks like he's laying down some new layers of shell precurser. I might try this sooner or later! Anyway, I have been so anxious about my little snail friend, but this gives me hope!

Miniature Ramshorns in high population will graze or feed on the mystery snails shell. Sometimes, over time, the ramshorns can create small "holes" or divots in the shell which can not be reversed. The best course of action is to try and remove as many mini ramshorns as possible so this doesn't happen. It drives me mad! I have a video planned in the future about this and how I (try to) remove them. Thank you for watching ! 💜🐌💜

I went with superglue gel as well. I did not leave the fiber in sadly, but luckily my snail (who has since been named Buffalo for their bravery and toughened exterior) has been doing well since! It's been about two weeks now.
Make sure you keep them damp if possible and do not keep them out of water for too long. Ensure the gel is COMPLETELY dry before placing them in the tank. Keep your fingers dry when possible, and keep keep the gel away from their skin and trapdoor! I made sure that all of the sides of the egg shell bandage were sealed with glue, like Lav has done in the video. Good luck! 😊

Thank you so much! One of two big golden mystery snails I received in the mail today has a piece missing on the rim of his shell, it doesn't look jagged, but I'm going to run my finger along the broken edge to ensure it's not sharp, and file it if it is. I found your channel today, and I think you and your content are fantastic! As a veterinary nurse, I have a very special place in my heart reserved for those who provide love and the best of care to those little pets that so many think of as "disposable". You're doing amazing work, if I was in the USA, I'd be in serious danger of purchasing way too many gorgeous snails from you and becoming a "crazy snail lady" 😂.... Which may well still happen tbh. I got interested in aquatic snails in recent months when it became apparent that some ramshorns and bladder snails must have hitchhiked on some plants that I bought for my axolotl tank, when my quarantine tank suddenly became a snail nursery. It's now the snail and shrimp tank, with a little blue and two large golden mystery snails added recently. I might be addicted! Keep the videos coming, they're just great!

Illness and injury kept me from saving the first one, who passed two days ago. But today I felt well enough to give this a try. I think I'm too late again, but it's worth a shot AND, most importantly, trying is important so the next time I'll know what to do... And hopefully have learned av thing or two about how to NOT glue myself to my snail. Thank goodness I have multiple locks on my phone, so I don't have to rely on FINGERPRINT!! Very nice! This was a GREAT video. I’ve been having an acidity problem in my tank for awhile (though I didn’t realize that was what it was until doing some recent research. I’ve fixed the problem, but the erosion for many of the poor snails was already done damage. Never tried doing shell ‘surgery’ on my little guys before but today I picked up a snail with really bad cracks in the front who I thought was dead (usually they do pass when it gets that bad). He’s an older snail. When I realized he was still alive I did some research and found your video. Because it was cracked from the edge I didn’t think eggshells would do it so- carefully, it took me about an hour because I was so nervous- I finally was able to chop an old mystery snail shell up into pieces I could use. Did the end with a piece of shell and used an eggshell piece behind it, since the shell part was small (the old shells weren’t in very good shape and it was tough to get a decent piece). PRAYING I didn’t accidentally glue him inside. It looks pretty good. As you said though we can only do our best. I don’t know why nature didn’t equip mystery snails with better healing equipment and longevity. . . their biology seems inconvenient! 😂
BTW- don’t worry too much about leaving them out of the water for a few minutes. Most of them can actually hibernate for weeks to months out of the water tucked away in their shells. We learned this by accident when we had a ‘mishap’ with a few escapees. We discovered them under a dresser by happenstance one day. Estimated they had been under their for two months. A couple died, but some lived- quite miraculous! Their shells don’t get chipped out of the water.

UPDATE- I put the little guy in around 3am last night and checked him spins 9 this morning. I was ASTONISHED to see that he was actually moving around, using his left eye and antenna mostly because there’s still a bit of a sharp edge where I made the patch. It was a tough one to patch and I didn’t think he’d pull through since he’s so old and roughed up. But now I’m hopeful! 😊. Going to go get a glass nail file today and see if I can round out that side- I was afraid to do too much. Very glad I checked out this vid :). Now I know how to do emergency ‘shell surgery’ when needed :)

I have a snail I noticed this weekend had a hole in her shell towards the back end. It's narrow, no more than 1/8" or maybe less, but maybe a half inch long. It's a big gap. I have no idea how it happened :(
I moved her to a 5 gallon tank where she is by herself and she seems to be able to move and do her things just fine, but sometimes I see a bit of her body bulging out of the hole, but other times I do not. She does, however, spend a fair bit of time half out of the water. I've noticed that half-out-of-the-water behavior in several snails now, always a female, and in every other case she was suffering some sort of critical problem that resulted in death after about a week. In two cases I believe it was just old age, in another case the shell completely broke apart, whereas no other snail in the tank had any shell trouble, so I believe she was just laying too many eggs too fast and depleted all her calcium :(
But it is an observation I have made that I have not seen mentioned or discussed anywhere else: a snail staying indefinitely half out of the water. Always a female who is in distress. I suspect that is her way of signaling to the other snails that she is no longer fit for mating, as male snails would probably rather not have to climb completely out of the water for hours on end to mate, if it would even be physically possible for them to manipulate the necessary parts for mating while out of the water, which it may not be.
But, since this particular snail with the hole in her shell seems to be moving around ok, I am wondering if I can, at a moment when her body is not bulging out of the hole, safely patch that up with some eggshell? I worry about the glue getting on her body, that seems like it would be really bad. Or do I just have to let her be, and keep her in this tank alone for the rest of her days?
I think she's figuring out though that there are no males in this tank to bother her, as she has started to spend some time fully submerged. It turns out there is a ramshorn snail in the tank, somehow, that keeps climbing onto her shell and I keep removing it from her. At some point I will just have to remove that ramshorn from the tank entirely if it isn't going to leave her alone.

Will the original snail shell under the egg shell heal and grow back if it was an injury and not merely erosion?

The membrane alone will dissolve or be eaten by others in time without any shell to cover it.
The best way is the eggshell with the membrane still attached.
Attached to the snails shell with Gel super glue as stated in the video.

Hi Lav's Snail! In early december I followed the instructions in your video to repair one of my snails that got injured. He's doing great. Lots of new shell growth - but the eggshell hat is still on him, although receding to the back of his shell. Will it just fall off in time? or do I need to remove it? if remove, how? Thanks again for a great video and any help you can provide on Crackles the Snail.

So, this is slightly long, but I've seen nothing regarding this particular sort of "crack" or deviation, as I refer to it. My snail's split/deviation began from where he likes to "mount" one of my females and it's where their shells meet. It has spread about half an inch to three quarters of an inch up into his shell. It looks like it's very nearly down to the meaty part of his head. I do what I can to try and keep him from doing that while trying to repair his shell, but I can't supervise them all the time. I've watched your video a couple of different times now - the first time was long before I ever had any shell issues to care for myself, but I'm not sure that this is a situation where attempting to attach a piece of eggshell would be entirely appropriate, just because of the location and kind of damage that exists. I do, however, want to come up with some kind of calcium paste to fill in the space that's been worn away. So far I've been directly applying calcium powder to his shell (as well as upped the calcium in his diet), and in the right amount it seems to actually stick to his shell without immediately rinsing out when he gets back in the water. I was considering using some kind of liquid bandage with the calcium, but ingredients like acetone or alcohol tell me a resounding "no" for the health, comfort, and overall well-being of the snail. I am also weary of using any kind of super glue, because many of them have other chemicals that can potentially leech into the shell or into the water. I was thinking of maybe some sort of dissolvable wrapping to make a kind of calcium+fibrous, layered covering to fill the gap to help it heal, but alas, I could not find any sort of gauze, bandage, or other covering that would be ideal for such an application. It doesn't seem to be hurting him, but I don't want it to progress into a further deviation or start really digging down into the meat of his head. I want to say the calcium powder being applied to his shell and in the damaged areas has been helping, but I only just thought of doing that a day or two ago, so only time will tell. I just wasn't sure if you, or maybe anyone else has had a similar issue, or if you or anyone else perhaps had further ideas on how I should try to treat my little snail buddy? I feel bad that it's gotten to this point, but I haven't really known what to do about it. If there are any thoughts or ideas, or somebody wants to see a picture of what I'm describing, please respond and we can communicate further. Thanks to everyone who read this!
After proofreading my comment, I had the thought of making a layered covering using egg membranes with calcium powder in between the membranes... But would that work? Would it wash away or come unstuck? If I applied it wet onto the shell when the shell is dry, filled in the gaps and empty spaces with the egg/calcium "patch" and then see how it dries and whether or not it stays in place? Obviously I don't want to leave him out of the water for too long waiting for it to dry and kind of adhere to his shell, but if it works then it's worth it, right? Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome! Thanks again!

I used the egg membrane to cover the huge hole on my snail. So that I don’t accidentally glue it in. My snail is about 3 cm long.
Then I placed egg shells all around the membrane. But, the curvature of the egg shell and my snail is way different. So, I had to break the egg shells into smaller pieces in order to glue. It was a very difficult and cumbersome process.
Then, I placed another membrane over the egg shells because they were all very disorganized and sticking out and I couldn’t glue them all everywhere…
Now, it looks very huge and heavy.
My snail survived it ❤ and now crawled to the top lid and it’s hanging like a thread…!
I don’t understand… should I relax, thinking it knows better, or should I worry?
As it grows it’s shell, can I remove the egg shells? How do I even know if it’s healed?
I have a suggestion: A Saran Wrap glued on only from the 4 sides, just to keep it humid and don’t allow the snail to poke itself out from the broken area may be used? That way I could see if the shell is being healed. I have to keep it home anyway.

Yes you can, but, be sure to be really careful not to get any glue inside the hole. This could potentially be fatal. I would suggest a combo of the two if you can. That would be EVEN better then just eggshell to use. Good luck! 🐌💜

Thank you for this. I had my female snail escape and damage her shell because she decided she needs to lay eggs and couldn't find a suitable spot in the tank so I now have rocks and cardboard hopefully trapping her inside the tank plus I threatened her with quarantine in her babies' tank so she can't escape and to stop her from making babies once she runs out of Luna's baby batter. I named her mate Luna because I thought he was a she. Luna looks a bit of a darker like the snail you patched up and derp is a golden snail

Hi Lav, fellow snail lover here!
My girl crawled out of the tank trying to lay a clutch of eggs and I found her the next morning on my floor (she was still alive, operculum was closed tightly. I plopped her back in a mini bowl with tank water and she came back out pretty quickly!!! The only thing is that she has a crack in her shell (no flesh showing thankfully) and her front part of her shell where she comes out is pretty jagged and looks sharp =( I want to file it down but I don't have a glass nail file atm and in the video you said you would explain later why glass files are better but you never got around to it (or im just dumb and missed it) Can you tell me why a glass one is preferable??? Would it be harmful to use another nail file like a metal one instead just for time being until I get a glass one? Sorry for the extremely long comment I just want to help my baby girl feel better

@@shyaa4297 to the best of my abilities yes and she seems to be doing good! I used one of those nail scissors (the tiny bent ones) and ending up just gently clipping across till it was even enough. Then I just used a metal file to file the edges gently just to get rid of the sharp edges, felt them get smooth enough. Then I submerged her with my hand and gently swirled her around so that any sharp metal wasn’t stuck to her shell (maybe that’s why she recommended glass) and she came out eventually (took her awhile but I’d be scared to lol) and she has recovered enough she even laid a huge clutch of eggs the next night!!! I was happy I got to help her after like an hour of surgery 😂 however her shell is still very brittle and peeling so I’m very gently with her and feeding her high calcium foods and good PH. Hopefully she’ll make a full recovery in time 😀

    I need help!!!
First time Mystery Snail owner. I just figured out my snail isn't getting enough calcium (even though I've been trying to make sure it does) because it has about half an inch of super thin shell. I touched it and the edge broke off.
Should I cover it in eggshell? Will it repair itself? Could I remove the worst part of it as long as the snail can retreat into its shell and let it regrow?
I'm scared of filing it because it is so incredibly thin but it does have rough edges right now. I'm thinking either put the eggshell on and use that to brace the shell and file them together or bring the shell back to where it was thicker and go from there.
    Advice? Thank you!!

    • @LavsSnails
      @LavsSnails  3 года назад +1

If the break isn't jagged it should be okay. A light file down should be sufficient. A patch really is for a bad injury or a hole or erosion spot. It's strong new growth you'll want. Increase calcium intake as well as add it in the water & Try to keep the Temp 72. That should allow the new growth to be thicker and stronger. Hope this helps! Best of luck with your little snail friend! 🐌💜
