Because the plate is static, there's zero reason MLB stadiums can't have a tennis-style "hawkeye" system in place. A few cameras, a fast processor, you should be able to get these challenge calls with a full 3D zone in seconds.
@@downhillin463 the issue is that the mlb is actively trying to make games shorter so more people watch them so they'd have to replace umpires with the computer strike zone all together for it to work. Another big issue of that is that as much as umpires can suck sometimes, it'd be so mf boring watching the computer call strikes and never having any sort of variables like arguments or ejections or even the occasional missed call. A big reason why people even see clips of baseball anymore are because of coaches freaking out or players freaking out so that'd be gone and so would a lot of eyes on baseball. I've seen this at Iowa Cubs games and honestly this needs to be an MLB ASAP! Too many umpires think they're so damn great yet they get so many calls wrong and when someone challenges them they do nothing but throw that person out so this system right here will put a lot of those umpires in their place and it's about time they are put in their place
Skenes nailing the corners of the strike zone! If he can put balls there, he's going to be impossible to hit. (Assuming the big league umpires aren't all as blind as Angel Hernandez.)
Paul Skenes was an Olerud Award winner as a catcher and closer before he was a pure pitcher. Maybe they can make up an award for 3-way players that can ump too.
This is the only way I would be for any type of robo umpire. The only problem would be if Angel Hernandez was behind the plate. The game would go 5 hours.
Pitchers are also not in a great position to see after their follow through. This Skenes kid has tremendous concentration. Too bad he’s pitching against Toledo. 😊
Can we just call up Minor League umps and include some systems. I do not want to watch the MLB have to fight through the current umpire system until we get a good challenge system. 3 challenges is just simply not enough if it's being called by a person.
I think challenge-able balls/strikes is only needed in the MLB if they are unable to make umps accountable for calling shit games. I still think more things need to be reviewable though.
This has to get implemented next mlb season I would hope. The thought that this review process takes too long or will disrupt the flow of games is completely uneducated.
Why do they have umpires calling strikes or balls anymore in big leagues with this technology. Like really you need to think about this anymore. Angel maybe bad but this logic is worse than anything he has blown.
Who would you argue with then? Robo umps will ruin the game. It’s not MLB The Show. It’s a beautiful game played by humans for humans, not a video game.
This will not help in his development in the minor leagues because it is not happening at the major league level. He has to learn to deal with the umpire.
Needs to be automatic. Players should not be wasting their time worrying about it. Automatic like a scoring play in the NFL. All done in the computer room….in seconds automatically and if found to be incorrect, correct it. One rule baseball has needed since it’s inception.
@@TheHENpp better then humans in this case by far. We have walls and chalk lines etc, this is just another way to use technology correctly. Umpires have for too long controlled the game with their bias.
We are taking the human out of everything. Humans aren't perfect, neither is life. We are ruining all sports with this technology. I'm sorry, I know 90% will disagree. The excitement of the announcers call of the "play at the plate" is going to be gone forever.
God forbid we get the calls right? Did you see those Angel calls yesterday? You agree with that shit? I'm not saying I want the ABS 100% of the time. I want the umps to be better at their jobs so that the challenge system is only used for things like this.
I agree with you, 100 percent. The imperfection of humans is what makes the game entertaining and enthralling. Sitting around, waiting for computers to analyze whether or not a pitch nicked the zone or looking at every close play to determine safe or out will take all of the immediacy of excitement out of the game.
That's just silly - the strike zone aspect of pitches can be and should be automated. The human aspects of the GAME are all still there, but the "human aspects" (ie errors and subjectivity) of the rules won't be, which makes for a better contest. Particularly if this is only done on a challenge basis, even balls and strikes will mostly remain in the umps hands, very important in the most egregious (read: Angel Hernandez) cases.
A little more accurate and the batter can have more of an advantage and get a hit. That is why he challenged. Its a beautiful strike on the corner that fooled the batter. That is the point
Great, let's get rid of umpires completely. While we're at it, robots would be better baseball players too. They can throw faster and more accurate and can hit much better. Let's just get rid of all humans so that we have a perfect (and boring) game. Honestly, the technology of instant replay has ruined every sport that it's been implemented in. This is a terrible idea that is just going to take away from the game. I love all of the recent changes MLB made to speed up the game and hopefully increase offensive excitement, but this is a terrible idea.
I absolutely, 100 percent do not want this in MLB. It's cute, but there is already too much electronic stuff influencing the outcome of the games. I like that Skenes knows the zone. He's gonna be a great MLB pitcher. But he'll be even greater when he's getting feedback from blue and hitting his spots as a result to record outs, as opposed to tapping his cap. And if the home plate umpire is so bad, that's when the time has come for the manager to earn his paycheck and read blue the riot act in support of his players. Make the games more entertaining; this is not that.
Electronic stuff doesn't influence the outcome of games. Incorrect calls by officials are the only thing outside player actions that influence the outcome of games. I cannot for the life of me understand why people are okay with games being ruined by bad calls. It's the same people who want referees to call the end of a game more leniently than the beginning. It's fucking idiotic.
Blame umps all you want, but how in the hell is that a strike at 2:32? Sure, in the computer generated screen the pretend ball hit the square, but i rewatched the video of the actual pitch a dozen times and i cannot for the life of me see how that and the computer generated pic matched.
Angel Hernandez games are going to last 4-5 hours with all of the successful challenges!
The top of the pitcher's hats will be rubbed bare by the end of the game.
After 5 successful challenges, eject the umpire.
@@John-tx1wk They better have a bunch of spare hats for them on hand.

He missed his spot by a foot and a half each time and got bailed out by ABS. MLB teams don't want guys who can throw accidental strikes.
