it's goathland and the biggest crime they have is someone leaving the garden gate open and sheep getting in, or tourists visiting heartbeat country and parking on the grass veges and getting a parking ticket.
I think (but don't quote me on this, as I don't think there's ever been a PRECISE Heartbeat Timeline..) Series 18 takes place near to the end of the 60s, in other words 1968/69 so it might not be that far off...
Trained actors (most of the cast) are in the habit of taking an exactly sufficient breath before reciting their line. This is very annoying because it does remove any natural sense of the speech. Penrose, the late Williams (Meynard) instead are just perfect in terms of breath and you cannot easily tell they are acting... Lonsdale is a very special case: that actor has just inexhaustible skills, and his character won't remain static for many episodes. Anyway, I loved that team and I keep wondering about the miraculous cooperation of the invisible ones, like location agents, photography, production coordination and so on. Even the dedicated music sometimes reveal a professional composer properly supporting the story, with a non-stereotypical style. In one word, on every episode I do closely watch the entire team while working. Sometimes there are technical issues like about firearms, but the weak points are so tiny, I must admit they cannot influence the overall result.
Not gay, just similar to Phil in the sense he's a bit naive and clueless when it comes to women. To be honest, his only true relationship was with Rosie and we all know what happened to her, sadly..
thanks for posting.
