A curious bit of BTS info is that this is David’s final time acting as the Tenth Doctor. This episode was released before End of Time but David had recorded it months before WOJA began filming, nevermind aired, so while there was still some Tenth a Doctor content for us to see, this was David’s final time portraying the character in RTD1.
fun fact: the doctor saying “don’t forget me, sarah jane” directly parallels the first time sarah jane left the tardis back in the 70s. she told him the same thing 🥹
When the Doctor's talking about fighting the Trickster's "shadows" and "changelings", he's referencing the Time Beetle from 'Turn Left' as well as the Graske from the interactive mini-episodes 'Attack of the Graske' and 'Music of the Spheres'.
The Brigadier (the cool old UNIT guy from the season 2 finale) was meant to appear in this story but unfortunately Nicholas Courtney's health didn't allow it and he ultimately passed away with the season 2 finale being his only appearance in the revival era. The fact that an on-screen reunion between the Doctor and his oldest friend across many lives never happened is an etenal shame but it just wasn't to be and we were lucky to get the one appearance we got.
This was always such a cool episode, pretty much bonus Tenth Doctor content. I always loved when SJA made references to the Doctor because he was such an important part in Sarah Jane’s life, so to see him actually star in an episode was a dream come true.
this episode is such a special one to me! i can remember the build up to it being massive! my brother won a competition and we all got to go and watch the premiere of it in the cinema with the actors and we’ve got a photo with daniel anthony! they also had face painting and people dressed like judoon!
omg exciting!! i remember the build up for weeks on cbbc, and it ended up being the most watched story from the whole show. but it’s really no surprise
Not the first time the Pantheon of Discord's been mentioned in the Whoniverse. In Love And Monsters, Elton first meets the Doctor after finding his mum dead in his living room, she was killed by a Shadow of the Pantheon that the Doctor was tracking, he just arrived too late to save her.
@@Legendary3Dgamer No, I was wrong that it was a shadow of the Pantheon, but it's explicitly NOT a Vashta Nerada, she was not a skeleton upon discovery.
One cool fact is that this is David tennet's last performance as the doctor. As the end of time had already wrapped up on filming, before this episode started production.
"Don't forget me Sara Jane" "No ones ever going to forget you.." The fact that canon wise this episode takes place just after Journeys end in which Donna forgets the Doctor AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Rani being the bridesmaid makes me fully sob I really see her as Sarah’s step daughter even though I know they just aren’t but it just makes me fully sob and the music too 😭
If I had a penny for each time Nigel Havers plays a character in a story who traps his wife in a time loop and the Doctor has to save the day. I'd have two pennies. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird it's happen twice.
I don't actually know what it's like to not be a Doctor Who fan. I've watched it since before my memories began. I love when it finds its way into other people's hearts, because it has such a strong pull on my own. One thing about RTD, he really knows how to play the part of the puppeteer, controlling the characters, and making you one of them, too.
The Doctor and Sarah Jane goodbye was beautiful, so full of emotion and meaning Just knowing what happens to both characters just makes it even more special
I’ve been waiting for this one!!! I love seeing K9. I loved the kids being disturbed by her having a romance😄. And Ten vs the Trickster! Amazing! I really really want the kids to end up as a TARDIS team. Especially Clyde.
Superb mix of the funny, the sweet and the heartbreaking - with a little bit of planetary jeopardy thrown in - what the Doctor Who Universe does so well. Of course this episode is all the more emotional when we know that it was actually the last thing David filmed before leaving the show.......In the Doctor's personal Timeline it comes somewhere between Journey's End and End of Time - and like you I feel it must be before The Waters of Mars when everything is still just a bit of fun. Apparently his last words ever shot were when he says "Spit Spot!" to the kids.
Love the reaction and the meaningful thoughts! :) This was a great episode, and honestly of all the SJA villainy’s to collide with the Doctor, the Trickster seemed like a great fit. The last of the time lords vs the Trickster beyond, such a fun idea. Good performances all around too, so good!
When the Doctor first said goodbye to Sarah Jane.... SARAH: Don't forget me. DOCTOR: Oh, Sarah. Don't you forget me. SARAH: Bye, Doctor. You know, travel does broaden the mind. DOCTOR: Yes. Till we meet again, Sarah. Sarah was not my favourite companion. She wasn't "my era" (Peter Davison was "my" Doctor, and Patrick Troughton is my favourite Doctor). And yet Elizabeth Sladen's passing still feels like having your hearts ripped out all these years later. I first saw her in Doctor Who's first spin off (where she met K9), and then... well, spoilers... but years later when I started buying the VHS tapes, and when the ABC ran the occasional re-run... I certainly fell in love with her and her relationship with the Doctor.
A lot happens between The Waters of Mars and The End of Time. The Time Lord Victorious fled into the Dark Times (a plotline that's only explored in some books/comics/audio dramas I believe) and had some misadventures and such happen, but it seems at some point he snaps out of it and The Doctor decides that if his death is coming, he should at least have some fun before he faces his destiny. That's where this story comes in.
@Zomdra I guess not, but it makes sense to me that it could fit in right before 10 goes on his wild bender and shows up in The End of Time wearing a Hawaiian lei and sunglasses. He just wants to feel happy before meeting his destiny.
While the bulk of the story skews towards fanservice for the adults reuniting Sarah with The Doctor andbringing The Doctor together with the Trickster they still work in some solid material that speaks to and is relatable to kids with Luke stressing over meeting a new potential stepparent. Those scenes are so fun and wholesome and as much as we rightfully focus on Sarah's grief at the end Luke lost out on that potential relationship too. He never had a dad. Meets a guy who could fill that role that he forms a connection with and then it's taken away.
K9 does not like other computers. When he said "Speak" to the Tardis and it replied with flashing lights, K9 said "You are a very stupid machine." I think he was just jealous because the Tardis was always no.1 with the Doctor
I’ve been waiting for these three episodes since you started the David tennant era! Love your reactions and it almost feels like the end of an era. Welcome to the end of a Moffat season btw, and bro I’m so sorry about Rory :3
An amusing fact, back when filming Journey's End, David Tennant put on a fake huff over how the spin offs got to appear in the main show, and he didn't get to show up on their shows, so they made this episode.
I don't know why any viewing list would place this story after Waters of Mars; this was broadcast first and while it's not impossible for it to take place after, there's really no benefit to watching it that way around, especially since it interrupts the flow of the 10th Doctor's final storyline. It also slightly changes the way a viewer sees the Doctor in this story, too, if this is taken as happening during his "procrastinating before going to meet Ood Sigma" phase before The End of Time.
15:51 speaking of which they are a family of gods and you have a long way to get through in Dr who till you meet each member of the Pantheon. Just to let you know
Definitely needs to be seen just before The End of Time with the Trickster’s line “The gate is waiting for you” - bit of foreshadowing

Oh that’s an amazing detail! That line works on so many levels honestly, considering his recent experience with Donna
the funny thing is liz sladen herself didn't realise the connection until people started congratulating her on the delivery of the line

Yes! I love that he's had those encounters leading up to this.

Yes! There is no Sarah Jane without the doctor so I’m thrilled he could show up here and even interact with the kids.

Hollie!!! That's an amazing experience for so many reasons. I'm so glad you all got to be there for it.
Poor tardis, she always gets the raw end of the deal with the pantheon of discord.
“Don’t forget me, Sarah Jane” 😢

I can’t help but wonder if any other villain could even be a match for the doctor! It was a brilliant choice.

Has it ever actually been officially confirmed anywhere whether this story takes place before or after Waters of Mars?

As Madame de Pompadour says in The Girl in the Fireplace, "The Doctor is worth the monsters"
While the bulk of the story skews towards fanservice for the adults reuniting Sarah with The Doctor andbringing The Doctor together with the Trickster they still work in some solid material that speaks to and is relatable to kids with Luke stressing over meeting a new potential stepparent. I think it probably is inconsequential whether you watch this before or after Waters of Mars - though this did air a couple weeks before that special.
I found a theory that one of the trickster’s shadow that doctor who fought was the one from love and monsters that killed Elton’s mum
7:06 "That little theme there" is the Doctor Who theme tune
Yesss Double Sarah Jane in a week
I saw that wedding dress last year, it was so tiny, she was so tiny, bless Sarah jane

Nigel Havers is a good actor and a gentleman.
I watched some of part one and most of two.

Pantheon of Discord. Not as bad as the League of Redditors.
I didn't know that Luke was created this way.
wait wait wait wait wait... you saw THE Movie once ? How about Gremlins 2 ? That one is a must watch ^^
13:50 video game cut scene
There is this deep linking that happens now in the comments section whether you want it or not.

6:46 Mogwai

Why does he need to know that now?
Too bad Sarah Jane can't get a happy love story, though.
