Midsized Trucks Are Going 4 Cylinder Turbo! Is this Good or Bad?

  • 👋 As the world changes, we are now seeing more and more mid sized trucks having a 4 cylinder turbo engine rather than an old school naturally aspirated V6. Do you like the direction the car market is going? Can these new turbo 4 bangers actually be as reliable compared to the outgoing V6 engines we've seen for decades? Todays video we are driving in the new 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV having some fun off roading. The Canyon and Colorado only have this 2.7L 4 cylinder engine available. And the new 2024 Tacoma now only has a 2.4L turbo 4 cylinder available. Ford Ranger only has turbo engines too! The Gladiator, Ridgeline and Frontier are the only midsized trucks that still have a normal V6 available. So we are seeing a big shift. Can these trucks still be trucks and handle what owners will throw their way?

    Toyota has a lot of issues going on with the Tundra, Highlander, and the new gen 4 Tacoma with overheating transmissions? The Canyon, Ranger Raptor, and the best deal is the Nissan Pro-4x. Had the opportunity to get the new Tacoma..so glad I did not. I have owned many. The new one 100% does NOT have good build quality so far even compared to the last gen. The interior pieces don't fit well and visibility forward over the hood is the worst of all the mid sizers. And not to mention pricing compared to it's competition? Please. You can't go wrong with the GM twins or the new Ranger either. Best bang for the buck and reliable? Go for the old school Nissan Frontier. The Toyota has the slowest and worst handling...the Ford the best and the others in between. Go drive them all. Look at reviews and make the best choice for you. I went with a GMC Canyon AT4X and have been very satisfied with the style in and out, power, and build quality. Thanks for the video.

      @@BrosFOURRSpeed heat, extra parts and complexity, and cheap mfg are not a great combo for the long term. Sure, under stressed applications with quality mfg, can do fine, but not the case today. Look at the new Toyota twin turbo V6, then ask owners if they would rather have the NA V8. Heck, I'd take the old small V8 2uz over any of the new stuff as the mfg was six sigma and continuous improvement driven, vs make it as cheap as possible with plastic parts everywhere. A naturally aspirated V6 was never a good choice for a truck. It doesn’t make power in the right RPMs. A turbo charged I4 or I6 that is designed like, and has a power curve similar to a turbo diesel is a far better choice for a small truck. It’s funny how people take so much issue with these engines because they are turbo charged, but have no problem with turbo diesel engines. I understand they’re not exactly the same, but the turbos are still doing the same thing. These are not car engines, and they’re not existing engines that the manufacturer just slapped a turbo on. They are purposely engineered and built to operate as truck engines. I believe the best example is the GM 2.7 L. It’s been used in the full-size trucks now for six years with an excellent track record.

    Your comments on all the cars you had with turbos and no issues, yes, turbos in cars and suvs are the way to go.
    So in say, WRX, a turbo 4 is perfect, but the car weighs 3000 lbs. It is semi aerodynamic. It isn’t asked to pull 6000 lbs and it isn’t asked to haul 1500 lbs.
    So take a similar motor, put it in a 4800 lb truck, no areo to speak of, and ask it to haul 1500 lbs and pull 6000 lbs. Your sports car will be in boost when you want it to be, but a truck towing, will be in boost way more often. Point is the turbo and motor will be working much harder in a truck than a car.
    The other factor as why people don’t like turbo 4s in trucks, cuz we like to mod our trucks. We like to mod our cars too, but typically we lighten, lower, our cars. But with trucks, we lift, and add bigger wheels and tires, and add more weight with tents, bumpers, racks, etc.
    So comparing your history with turbo 4s in cars is not anything close to the same as trucks.
    The other thing I hear a lot of is, “turbos have been in diesels for ever and they are reliable”. If you don’t know the difference in gas and diesel, do some research. Diesel engines are simpler lower rev engines.

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  3 месяца назад

      Keep in mind, these 4 cylinder turbo engines in the new midsized trucks are not just pulled from cars. These are motors built to be in a truck. So you'd think they are more robust. Time will tell like we talked about, but we can assume manufacturers have the weight of the truck and towing capabilities in mind when developing these engine for the truck. Not like they stick in the 4 banger out of an economy car and hope for the best lol

    • @clintshanks2538

      I know they are not the same engines and yes they have been engineered/mod for trucks. Couple of the YT overland builds with the new Taco are running into overheating issues. Course it is the first year of a new platform. I’m sure there will be updates and recalls.
      I wish they all would go with a 3.0 inline 6. Just bring back a modern 2JZ lol.
      I think what we/they are gonna figure out is they need more displacement naturally and lower boost. Ranger Raptor uses a 3.0 V6 turbo, TRD Pro Taco uses a hybrid, GM uses about the biggest you can make a 4-cylinder. I’m betting Frontier is eventually gonna use the 3.0 V6 turbo out of the Z. Ranger will move away from the 2.3 eco. You already have the option for the 2.7 in the Lariat package.

    Once again, I applaud Mary Barra, CEO of GM, and her competitors at Ford for dumping EVs. Tesla can keep this miniscule part of the automotive sales market. It's almost irrelevant. I guess I should be relieved that companies are still producing mid-size gas (and diesel?) cars and trucks; even if they are only four banger turbos. Personally, I won't have one. The 2.7 4 cyl turbo Silverado is in contradiction to itself. I'll take the F-150 2.7 V6 every time. That's a good engine. The 3.5 twin turbo out classes just about everything else. The F-150 PowerBoost saved so many folks from freezing to death in Texas 2 winters ago. The PowerBoost battery/generator powered whole houses. Ford's mid-size Ranger p'up also has a 4 cyl. It's a really good turbo 4 cy like those herel, but I refuse to come down from full size.

    Bad. They’re not diesel 4 cylinder. The gas ones will have more wear and tear and more problems as opposed to v6 engines.

    Bad bad bad. There are no plus to a 4cyl turbo at all except more complexities, it will be totalled win the engine wears out bc it will be too pricey to fix and will wear out 40 percent faster. I wouldn't complain if it was turbo 6, and turbo 8 in full size

    • @robertopics

      V6's are just as complex 😂. The 4 cylinder is lighter and has more power than the v6 of old so there is that. Honestly I'd choose that an i6 over a v8.

    Im currently looking into a 2020+ toyota 4runner or even the Nissan Frontier Pro 4x due to the fact they are V6 engines and should in theory, last a life time.
    Only thing u need to do to a V6 truck to increase low end torque, is a simple gear change while keeping the tire size low and a good tune. I'd love to get a 3rd gen tacoma but it's too small for my needs and family. If I were to get 1. It would get 4.88s or 5.29 gears and a OTT tune. It would have lots of low end torque and still be super reliable. That's why I want a V6 4runner

      @@BrosFOURRSpeed I like having the simplicity of the the V6. Easier to work on, I’m not against a 4 cylinder turbo, they are far better then the ones we had in the 80s. For me, even though I’m extremely knowledgeable on auto repair, it’s just easier and cheaper in some cases to keep the V6. The Gov is definitely changing automotive manufacturing in regards to more efficient fuel management and economy. Not always a bad thing, just that so many manufacturers rush to meet that standard and fall short in other areas. Just look at the new tundra issue right now. Not all engines are bad per day, but all under recall. The new Taco now has issues with transmissions both with the standard and auto. In time it always works out, just a ruff go on any new product. There will always be die hard V8 fans including myself but I’m not ignorant to improving on newer designs and smaller displacement. I see how we are going in engineering and know that the common Joe as we say won’t be able to work on his own car. Myself, I still love turning wrenches and maintaining what I have in my fleet. Even though I love my ZR2, I still have a lot of love for my 69 C10.

    Small engines, running higher compression. Poor lower end torque, short life. Imagine these super efficient engines built to higher tolerances experiencing torsional stresses in off-road applications.

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  3 месяца назад

      This would have more lower end torque..turbo 4 cylinders have been around for decades.

    • @peterl545
      @peterl545 3 месяца назад

      @@BrosFOURRSpeed Sure, why not. But the nature of turbos, is they have to run on higher compressions/higher RPM and built to higher tolerances. Only positive for Turbos in non-racing applications is MPG. I prefer to go with higher displacement for my power needs.

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  3 месяца назад

      @@peterl545 If the engine is built to higher tolerance, then there isn’t an issue. These new turbo engines are built to handle the boost and weight of the trucks + towing. And since they have better low end power, they will mostly operate in lower RPM then the N/A V6 engines
