I know this is an old comment, but curtain and upholstery weight velvet is more suited for trench coats, crop jackets and other such structured items. It drapes well but over larger spans. Consider a lighter dress-weight velvet made out of, ideally a cotton backing weave with a viscose pile, but the polyviscose velvets generally drape better, hold color better and breath adequately for the same price. Consider their quilted velvets for making a coat for yourself, it can get surprisingly cold in Delhi!
