I would have preferred if Starlight's backstory was something like this. Her parents wanted their child to be like everyone else, NOT a social outcast. So they pushed her into so many different categories and activities, only to realize she wasn't good at/didn't like them, so they resented her talent of magic, and engraved it into her head that being unique was bad and she needed to fit in with society or else no one would like her and she would be all alone until she DIED, that would scar a child for life. Then she could have met Sunburst and he would have taught her the good parts of being unique, and once he got his Cutie Mark and moved away, she would be even more devastated and then given up on his "Unique" philosophy and she would have resorted to EXTREME cases of "Equality". That would have been a MUCH better Motivation in my opinion.
Hylian Pegasus That's a good backstory. I thought that Starlight just didn't like her cutie mark, (maybe her magic hurt someone important to her) so she started searching for other ponies like her and then they built the village together.
Night Shade: That is extremly rude! Someone here took time out of their day to share an amazing theory/headcannon to others! Just because someone has an idea doesn't mean you should push them down! You should value what other people have to say and move on, whether you like the opinion or not! It makes me so upset when others call someone horrible names and block them out entirely for saying something they don't agree with. To show you how offended I am, I usually never comment. Also, Halian Pegasus, I love your theory!! Remember, Haters gunna Hate!! Dont let them push you down, they just say mean things because they arnt as amazing and awesome as you!!
Silver Gacha I mean, they’re already discussing Marxist cults here. Maybe children who are going through the same thing with their parents seeing they don’t have to be fit a box like every other child and can be themselves could even be a good lesson for them.
Equestrian Idiot he hasn't been killed off his horn flew off and that's the source of his power and it's revealed in the comic books that his Spirit retreated into his horn
the last timeline i would say is starlight's timeline....Since her philosophy involves no Talent in anything this means that no earth pony could make food,no pegasus could make the weather and no unicorn could use your magic to change anything,And if her philosophy succeeded then alicorns like celestia and luna couldn't raise the moon and sun to keep crops healthy.Equestra would eventually become nothing and all the ponies would die from starvation since no one can raise or grow crops or food poisoning from making bad food...and if there where any other villains showing up there would be no way for them to protect themselves from the force....And if there where other element of harmony bearers they would eventually loose their cutie marks to starlight....wow...this theory could be possible and achievable...johnscorcer please read this
So if Starlight has the same voice actor as Barbie. . .that means she has the same voice actor as Sango from InuYasha. . . .I knew she sounded familiar!!!
+CouchPotatoCNPB Fun fact: Megalovania was created by Toby Fox just shouting into a microphone and writing down what he liked. ...or, at least, something to that effect.
Sombra even had a better motive. He suffered excrutiating pain every crystal faire, he was insulted by every crystal pony, and eventually he found out why he was the way he was. He was so filled with pent up hatred and pent up despair for him to become the Dark King. He was so strong, so filled with this dark magic he killed Princess Amore. He had a reason for being the way he was. he ruled the kingdom that tormented hin
Ink's line with, "Flattery? Josh if you wanted to date me you could have just asked." I'm like, HELL HAS BEEN UNLEASHED, DEMON FANFICTIONS HAVE COME TRUE!!!!! I personally like them shipping their OCs better. And Undertale.
William Côté YEP It would actually be pretty cool another BRONY couple but u know wut ... WAIT headcannon queen + awsome reacter = THE BEST BRONY COUPLE EVER!
Inkbrand is already a thing. It's supposed to be the characters of Ink Rose and Firebrand that are confirmed to be a couple, however. The actual people being a couple would border on pedophilia

Anyone else notice how there was a huge element of war in these episodes? For example in the last scene of the messed up timelines you see what would happen if we had a huge nuclear war. Everything would be gone. Everything would be dead. Nothing could survive on Earth anymore.
Well, if the maneur really did hit the fan, it's likely something would continue to live miles under the ground and sea. Give the earth another few million years and something else will be swimming around. Heck, I don't think humans could actually end life outright without using an artificial black-hole. (Optimism intensifies)
Josh is actually pretty accurate on the whole 'Time is an ocean and a storm' thing, time can be unpredictable, and just when you think you can predict what's gonna happen, a new current is opened up and an unexpected twist appears. What Josh said was really symbolic and I love that👍
I think that the final alternate future is foreshadowing the upcoming of a very powerful villain, that has the ability to destroy everything and everyone if that villain is never defeated by the Mane 6.
oh goodness you might be right. with no Magic Luna and Celestia couldnt raise the sun when Cozy Glow stole it...which would either mean a horrible wasteland similar to venus or a freezing pluto like one. or one on either side of the planet. what if this is the future where Cozy Glow won....
Starlight is often compared to Sunset and I think Sunset was done better in many ways; She was nowhere near as evil so that made it easier to forgive her. Her redemption had a magical explanation (I know many hate magical redemption but I rather have a magical explanation than no explanation at all), she actually was punished for her actions and her motivations were kept a lot more vague. They should have just hinted what Starlight's motivation was and leave it at that. After she's redeemed she is shown that she's going to go through a tough time but that she'll be fine. That which fits much better than the extremely happy outcome of Starlight. This episode kind of made me stop watching MLP. I fell in love with it because of it's combination of both dark and light elements but this was just far too light. Also all those villains had no purpose whatsoever and should have just been cut out with the exception of Nightmare Moon.
Of course Twilight's going to want to believe that Chrysalis can be trusted to honor her words. It's the only possible way to save most of these ponies. And Twilight doesn't know how to say "acceptable losses." Or "inevitable losses." She believes a priori that these ponies can be saved, and clearly fighting a vastly superior army isn't going to accomplish that. Thus it must be necessary to trust Chrysalis.
Here's what I think Starlight Glimmer's backstory should have been: She lived in a town where cutie marks were a big deal. She had a group of friends who all got their cutie marks, but she didn't until much later. Everyone in her group made fun of her because she was the last one to get one- and when she DID finally get her mark, they made fun of her even more because they deemed it inferior to their own. Resentment builds until she unleashes her magic, taking all her fellow townspeople's cutie marks, and runs away to stat her little cult. How was that? :D
The One Golden Gryphon what if she never had one and that she isn't special and when she and twilight are going back to the present and the sonic rainboom happen she finally get her cute mark or maybe not both would have been awesome
I'm afraid I take issue with Josh's comparison of Starlight's backstory and Applebloom's. For starters Applebloom and Twist didn't actually meet up and hang out until after Applebloom found out they both didn't have their cutie mark, not to mention that Twist never left town, thus allowing Applebloom to see her even after she got her cutie mark, which she never did since they were never really "friends". Starlight and Sunburst grew up together, and as we find out later in the season 6 premiere, shared a very close bond. When Sunburst moved away Starlight didn't want to make any new friends because she was afraid she would lose them and given that she was only a kid at the time the trauma of losing someone that close to you can cause some serious damage. Seeing as how getting his cutie mark is what caused him to leave it makes total sense that young Starlight would attribute the cutie mark as the cause of her grief. Once she was old enough to do anything about it she would have been harboring that pain for so long that her methods would be extreme and cause her to be blinded by her own thought process. Once she saw all the damage that she was causing and actually had another pony reach out to her, even after all she did, of course she would take that offering and try to change. Her backstory, motivation and redemption is my absolute favorite in the entire series and I fell in love with her character.
22:50 not quite. Twist never moved from Ponyville, unlike Sunburst, and Applebloom never stop seeing her. Also the moment Applebloom lost Twist she found two new friends and started CMC. Apparently Starlight didn't. And she _is_ socially awkward as shown in latter episodes. So she was left alone and kept thinking through that over and over again, and finally come up with a conclusion. Trust me there are people like this, myself included.
+joshscorcher This was a great crossover. Loved your opening and all your references. Great that you took an unique perspective on it. Interesting that you mentioned that Starlight had the same backstory as Apple-bloom. I mentioned that in my reviews but I think was partially intentional. Anakin and Luke also faced similar dilemmas. Starlight might not have found other friends, have had a proper older sister or a good mentor. Also out of all the villians she was the least sadistic. She truly believed she was helping create equality. I loved Ink Rose`s explanations of the alternate timelines. Personally I think that Starlight ending bullying created so much love that it helped the Changelings. I also discussed the alternate timeline in my reviews. Stop ripping me off you guys! LOL. Ink Rose was brilliant also.
19:03 Really Josh? You’re only NOW noticing a similarity between Maleficent and Nightmare Moon?! Especially when in the show’s pilot she specifically quoted, not one, but TWO lines from Maleficent!
How to create a meme step 1- Pause at a random moment and take a pic of that step 2-Add a quote...original or not step 3-Pester the heck out of people with the pic Congratulations, you have just created a meme!
21:27 As of season 8, here’s an alternate explanation: Cozy glow’s plan was to drain the magic in all of equestria. You’ll also come to realize the non ponies and magical monsters are al affected. Cozy glow’s plan to be the sole ruler of equestria spirals into chaos as no magical creature has any magic to tame any danger or catastrophie because there is no magic. It’s like trying to block out the sun for 5 straight years and expect everything to still work. Result: everyone dies. THE END!!!
Ok, Ink Rose gave me a reason why not to question the different futures *YAY* Josh made the boring stuff of the MLP episode "hillarious" and overall I agree with the rating. I've seen better finales of the series, this was weak compared to Season 5 Premire. Oh well, I still can answer this question "Were you entertained with the episode Blissy?" Yes, yes I was. I was also entertained with this review. Thanks for sharing Josh ^^
I'd like to place my thoughts in for a moment here, since I am a HUGE King Sombra fan, I'll just talk about that, but I'm not completely biased. Now as Ink stated and which I agree with, Without Twilight as her pupil and her making any friends, Celestia would have had to banish Luna or Nightmare Moon again, CMC might not have accidentally freed Discord. And with Celestia and Luna's connection to the elements being severed, Celestia herself would have had to replenish the spell to contain Discord in stone. Cadence and Shining Armor would have never met, fallen in love, and have the Royal Wedding, thus Celestia having to discover a Changeling plot long before it's even begun. With Sombra returning to reclaim the Empire, no one would be able to find the Crystal Heart and basically begin the war against Equestria. Now as we've seen on the map, it might have been months, if not a year later when Tirek might not have been able to steal magic with the war going on, With Sombra's tactics to have also conquered half of Equestria, a crippling blow might actually help Sombra win the war. His dark magic is powerful and with an entire Empire at his disposal, he is a force to be reckoned with. If he can trap anyone in their nightmares, set up countless back-up plans, and set traps. You have a villain who will literally Death Star your forces in a single battle. Now saying if somehow Celestia was able to banish him again, He might again curse the Empire to vanish or be wiped from the face of Equestria and the crystal ponies and empire will be freed. With the Butterfly Effect, anything can happen! Thanks for reading and your time, what do you all think tho?
I already did how this episode should be and here how should be.
*The episode begins with Twilight Sparkle at the School for Gifted Unicorns practicing for an upcoming lecture about cutie marks. During her lecture the next day, Twilight talks about the sonic-rainboom that led to her and her friends getting their marks. In the middle of her lecture, Twilight briefly sees Starlight Glimmer in the audience, but she disappears just moments later, making Twilight nervous. On the way back to the Castle of Friendship, Twilight worriedly wonders what Starlight could be up to, and Spike considers that she might be returning for revenge after her previous plot had been foiled. In the castle throne room, Twilight and Spike find Starlight sitting in one of the thrones.*
*Using a magic scroll, Starlight casts a spell that opens a portal over the Cutie Map, but before she vanishes through it, the spirit of Star Swirl the Bearded intervenes warning Starlight that the consequences for "fooling" with time are extremely severe which is the reason he never finish his spell. Starlight vanishes through portal over anyway, leaving the scroll behind. When Spike touches the scroll, the spell on it activates again, and Twilight and Spike are dragged through the portal as well. Twilight and Spike land in Cloudsdale Flight Camp. When they see Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy as fillies, they realize they have traveled back in time to the day Rainbow Dash performed her first sonic-rainboom.*
*During Rainbow's race against Hoops and Dumb-Bell, Starlight Glimmer interferes and stops Rainbow from doing the rainboom. Starlight's intervention has a ripple effect that prevents Twilight's friends from realizing their true talents. As Twilight confronts Starlight about what she has done she and Spike began to vanishes of existence. Her plan succeeds and she returns to the present where she finds that Twilight's castle is gone, leaving only the Cutie Map surrounded by snow and fog. Starlight runs into the spirit of Star Swirl the Bearded, who explains that her interference has created an alternate timeline.*
*Star Swirl tells Starlight that when Nightmare Moon returned Twilight's friends couldn't able to help fight off Nightmare Moon because they never realizing their true talents. With Celestia's defeat Nightmare Moon rules over Equestria, and send Equestria into a perpetual nighttime and without sun Equestria is blanketed in deep snow and plagued by Windigos that feed off from the fighting and hatred that Nightmare Moon, Sombra, Discord and Tirek cause, and her alternate town and herself were killed by the battle. Realizing the cold nightmare of a future that she could potentially create, Starlight attempt to use the spell again in intent on setting things right.*
+Shadow Storm Best line in Shadow the Hedgehog, well except for such classics as "FIND THE COMPUTER ROOM!" and of course "Where's that DAMN fourth Chaos Emerald?" :p
I'm pretty much with you on this one, Commander. The ideas it presents are great in terms of alternate universes, but sadly good ideas only go so far. And by far its biggest handicap is our resident villain; Starlight Glimmer. At first, she seemed okay; being one of the first majorly diabolical villains the show has ever made next to Tirek. But it all went downhill when this went down. For a start, her little revenge plot had next to no buildup, just one little glimpse of her in Amending Fences. Okay, I don't need tabs on her at all times, but SOMETHING letting us know something will go down in the finale would be nice! Sure we got the animatic at that one con when they announced MLP's return, but that was hardly a prelude to things to come and more a reminder that she existed! Secondly, and by far the biggest problem, is her motivation. As both you, I and Silver Quill have pointed out, she is a TERRIBLE villain in terms of both backstory and character. She's a sociopathic monster coming in and was one coming out of the first part. Now, I get that rushed redemptions are the norm for MLP and while a problem, is nothing new. But here's the thing: With all the other rushed redemptions, there was a feeling that it was deserved. Discord's overall redemption was slower and gave us some of the show's funniest episodes the show's ever made. Sunset Shimmer literally shined in the second and third Equestria Girls movies when she finally got past the villain filter. Even the recluse Moondancer, whom we don't even SEE prior to Season 5 had a better motivation and she wasn't even a villain! Starlight, however, was NOT deserving of a redemption. At least, not this season. She was too far gone to be redeemed before, so what made the writers think NOW, after virtually no appearances would be a good time? And her backstory's so petty that it makes Spider-Man from One More Day look rational by comparison! And by far the most hateable thing of all is her reactions to the desolate Equestria; if she truly cared about her precious colony, there is no way in hell that she'd pick the destruction of Equestria over harmony! Or in the words of Admiral Sengoku from One Piece: "The man has been through something unspeakable, and of course he has my sympathy. But however justified his revenge may seem, involving civilians in this catastrophe is inexcusable. That is NOT justice." So thank you greatly, Commander Firebrand for finally shedding light on the big elephant in the room regarding this finale. And InkRose, I love you, you have a great voice for both acting and singing, but PLEASE don't try to rationalize the irrational. Starlight's problems have no excuse and should be punished accordingly. Hell, I SIDE with her when she admits that herself!
21:10 The Canonical Equivalent of Fallout Equestria, except Everyone Died and Equestria is just a Dead Barren Wasteland filled with Absolutely NO Life, not even on a Boctanial Level.
*Future Josh: that doesn't matter, I'm off to stop the invasion of mutant Belgium Waffles. Apparently they have a weakness to blue wings and black Beanies* Me: TAKE ME WITH YOU!!!
13:48 DEFINITELY agree with this, though my own rebuttal consists of only one phrase: "Equality does NOT mean Sameness". The first concept is true amongst all sentients, and should be recognized as such, but the latter is completely false and should NEVER be mistaken for the former. That kind of thinking has led to the downfall of many a nation.
Also, time is a ball of yarn. Everyone's story is tangled up with everyone else', and the more you time travel, the more tangled it gets. (Thanks for the inspiration on that one Linkara!)
23:13 Yes, it would be hilarious. The only problem is we already have a recurring minor character like that: Discord. And he's far more interesting and hilarious than Starlight will ever be.
I disagree with your comparison between Starlight and Apple Bloom. If anything, they're polar opposites. * Starlight and Sunburst were CLOSE. I never got the impression that Apple Bloom and Twist actually were very close friends. * Starlight never saw Sunburst again until the Season 6 premiere. Twist never even moved from the town, and it's very possible she and Apple Bloom met up again later. * Apple Bloom had a loving and supporting family. We have no idea if Starlight even has a family. * Apple Bloom didn't really seek out new friends, two ponies just happened to defend her, and they happened to have the same problem as her, so they teamed up. Starlight didn't seem to have that luck. In fact, it seems like Starlight never really had any other friends at all. I don't think Starlight immediately went "supreme cult leader" immediately after the events of Sunburst leaving. She probably just developed a hatred of cutie marks because, as a child who didn't really seem to have a support system like AB, she didn't know how to handle it. And it just resulted in her retaining this childish mentality until adulthood, where she makes a town which she honestly considers "help" to lost ponies like her. Then, of course, that town was taken away, but due to her childish mentality, she of course goes to the vindictive route, until finally, she witnessed the horror of the wastelands timeline, and her innocence was lost. She may have gone in denial for a bit, but her innocence was truly lost. And that's why I *liked* Starlight's redemption.
I also have to disagree on Sunset's motivation being better. Assuming the comics are canon, it basically amounted to Sunset throwing a tantrum over Celestia not bending to her will. I found her quite unlikable in that one. Starlight, at the very least, was just a child who did nothing wrong until her she lost the one dearest to her. Sunset brought everything on herself.
That's a perfect analysis. It also completely justifies the writers choosing that specific origin for her. Even LowPonView, one of Starlight's biggest defenders thought it was a weak origin. But you have brilliantly laid out why it's not. Well done. @^-^@
But Flowey... you're a jerk. I mean, you might be a good person on the inside, when that side of you comes out, but mostly, you're a jerk. I'm not YOUR fan, but I am a fan of Undertale. Also, Herpy Derps... that's not funny.
Yes, thank you, Josh! I thought I was only one who didn't like this episode! I'm usually not negative about the show, but this episode just really rubbed me the wrong way, y'know? (My comments were too long for RUclips so I'll shorten them) - The name is weird and sounds like a beta title for 'Magical Mystery Cure' or 'The Cutie Map' more than anything, because Starlight didn't even change anyone's cutie marks; heck, in some of the timelines, some of the mane 6 still have their marks! I dunno, maybe 'Marking Time' would've been better? - I enjoyed bits of Twilight's speech and wish we would've heard more of it since it talked about the magic of cutie marks, but with as little as there is, it makes the opening feel pointless; why not just have Twilight doing her speech, she sees Starlight, and then they cut to the opening? - Would it really have been that much effort to make the mane 5 blank flanks in the alternate futures? If they get their marks in other ways, then it makes their cutie marks not seem special, no matter how you look at it, doesn't it? - Where is alternate Twilight in all this? Our Twilight is from the future, so it doesn't make sense for the other one to just disappear unless REASONS, right? I feel like it missed out on a chance for a sad moment where Twilight finds a miserable shut-in Twilight with a blank flank who has lost hope on everything, getting even more saddened at the fact that the Twilight she's talking to was successful, happy, had many friends, and even became an alicorn. - I know that most of the finales single Twilight (and Spike) out, but the rest of Twilight's friends are left COMPLETELY out of the loop in this one and even have to be FILLED IN when Twilight gets back. I would've LOVED to have seen all of the Mane 6 react to their counterparts. They could've made this a three-parter or just cut other scenes to make room, right? The mane 5 had roles in all of the other finales, at least SOMEWHAT. "It took place in Cloudsdale; Rarity, Pinkie Pie, and Applejack would've fallen." Cloud-walking spell maybe? Part of the point of Twilight's Kingdom was that Twilight needed her friends and they needed her. Twilight mentions her friends and how important they are, sure, but she didn't need their presence to stop Starlight and it makes her friends seem really unimportant. - Starlight Glimmer caved in rather quickly. I mean, small event made her insane, so small event makes it better... I guess, but something I would've loved is that, instead of a song at the end (or they can keep it and have another by making time/cutting stuff out), have a song where Twilight uses some sort of projection memory spell to show and sing to Starlight about how great her friendship is, and Starlight would be so overwhelmed with how much all of her friends love each other that it would be hard to argue against. Then she could maybe cry and be like "I wish I could've had that." THEN Twilight offers her hoof to her and says, "You still can..." - "I don't know why my relationship with my friends is all that important." ...Twilight? You're the ELEMENTS OF HARMONY. It's not even that hard to say! "My friends and I are the Elements of Harmony and Council of Friendship; we've fought many villains in our time because no one else could do it. Celestia and Luna themselves were taken down on more than one occasion and only survived because we beat the living tar out of the bad guys." That takes maybe 5-10 seconds to explain? Josh is right; Twilight REALLY gets hit with the idiot stick here. - Twilight gets slightly emotional over all the timelines, but does she ever cry; I mean REALLY cry? We usually get that in every finale, but it's left out here; I can't really get invested either because I know that none of this is going to amount to anything (maybe Twilight could've kept relics from each time period?). Spike's biggest reaction is alternate!Rarity rejecting him which really doesn't help the credibility of these episodes. They both seem kind of detached from the plot, running up to their alternate friends like they're their real friends and it's slightly mind-boggling because it should be obvious to them that this is a different timeline, especially after they've done it a couple of times before. "The writer made sure that Twilight's friends didn't come along so Twilight and Spike would feel isolated in these new timelines." Fine, but make me FEEL that more. - I don't mind Starlight that much I guess. A little overpowered (or Twilight was underpowered; her lasers are laughably pathetic sometimes) and I half-expected Starlight to be wearing the Alicorn Amulet (maybe hiding it away), but compared to the other stuff in this episode, this hardly bothers me. My only really big problem with her is that, if she was doing her research, you'd think Starlight would realize that this was a bad idea. Even if she was blinded by anger, this still bugs me. If the episode was entertaining, I wouldn't care as much, but... it wasn't, so I do. XD I'm with Josh in that this is one of the weakest finales we've ever had. If you asked me which finale I found to be the absolute weakest, it would probably be this one. It wasn't horrible, and Best Night Ever would be a close contender, but Best Night Ever is at least a little funnier, a little more relateable, and was half as long as this, so if you didn't like it, it wasn't as painfully long. All in all, while the plot had potential, I feel that it was ruined quite a bit by ideas that weren't all there, focus on things that shouldn't have had focus, a lack of focus on things that should've had focus, and characters that only cared just enough about the situation they were in. Still, it wasn't THE, WORST, POSSIBLE, THING, and there were certainly episodes that have made me more frustrated, but this was the longest one of them all. I don't know if it's in my bottom ten least favorite episode, but it's still pretty low.
Cyber Kirby But thats the weird part, it was so popular with mlp on the first day hub got noticed? So why was it cancelled can never have been a good reason
22:16 I’m gonna stop you here, Josh, because this is where your argument falls apart a little. It is true that both Starlight and Applebloom were separated from a friend because the friend in question got a cutie mark and they didn’t. However, Applebloom’s friendship with said character was a short-lived alliance of convenience, and she quickly found other, more meaningful, friendships to replace it. Starlight, on the other hand, clearly has a much stronger relationship with Sunburst, and it is later implied that she never had any other friends before or since (nor does she have any siblings).
Hey man, I haven't watched you in forever and I'm glad you went back to live action stuff. Your live action self helps convey your jokes and vocal tone better than your animated sections :)
I'm all for redemption regardless of whether or not the villain is sympathetic. But I think the issue with Starlight's redemption is that while it does explain her ideology of equality = harmony (somewhat), it doesn't explain her behaviour: we don't know what caused her to become sadistic and malicious from this one scene. In fact, looking back at the last scene, it feels like watching a different character wearing her skin. This is what I was afraid of when the previews for season 5 started: They wanted a well-intentioned extremist, they gave us Chrysalis part 2.
I actually disagree. I personally didn't have a problem with Starlight's redemption, as it showed how one little incident caused an unhealthy mindset that grew greater and greater. Since the incident occurred as a child, I think it resulted in her having a very childish, black and white morality mindset. And children can be pretty vindictive. At the end, I think she was clearly horrified by the wasteland timeline, as her own worldview shattered, and the next scene was just her being in denial as her "innocence" was lost. However, she managed to find hope in a far healthier way at the end.
22:00 The funny thing is if you take other episodes situations into account for season 5 it sets a precedent in two episodes, "Tanks for the memories" and "amending fences" for rainbow she was going to the five stages of grief because she felt she was going to lose someone precious to her, for starlight she never got past the anger and bargaining phase, and amending fences shows what happens when one of your friends leaves you and never says good bye.
I think this episode is about as good as Canterlot Wedding. Also, dammit, Ink! There hasn't been a teenager as overwhelmingly cutesie and adorable as you since Tara Strong herself.
As painfully awkward and underwhelming as Starlight's backstory was, social isolation/alienation is still alive and well in the world and some children are even made to be alone, I've seen it. It makes Starlight's history vaguely believable, given how exaggerated the end result was, but then again me and my friends don't know magic. Wish this episode was handled so much better, still...
Applebloom's a very friendly, sociable pony. As far as I can tell, Starlight only had one friend and had no idea how to make another. Season six delves more into her character and, good grief, she's more socially stunted than Twilight in the pilot episode! There's probably more to her road to villainy than that one flashback, but that's the moment that stands out in her mind.
I want/ would like to see those moments. What about the Heart's Warming Eve episode where they do their version of A Christmas Carol? Think something similar happened there?
Am I the only one who utterly fan girled over the sans cameo? Like or reply if you agree. P.S sorry for waking up New Jersey during that. Edit: oof, middle school me was a little fangirl.
Big problem with Starlight's redemption? The audience fucking hates her for pretty much every reason Josh stated. I could see where the comparisons to Dan came from but there's one big difference. Dan's desire for revenge is played up for comedy every single time, and his antics made him likeable. Starlight's desire for revenge is NOT played for comedy, at ALL. It never was even once, played for comedy. It was meant to be taken dead straight. And with a backstory like Starlight's, that's....that's not a good thing. The title of this finale should be renamed "How to make a fanbase hate a formerly awesome character in an hour."
+Nicholas Clubb I hated her from the begining and unlike Sunset, she did not get a crowd and at least Sunset had a good excuse for a fast 180. EOH blast. Starlight didn't have that. This season was poor writing from the get go. way too few gems in it.
+Revkor Eh, I dunno if I'd quite go that far. From my perspective, a lot of things this season were pretty good but they stumbled at the end there (And when it comes to show writing, you REALLY can't do that. The opener and finale is what people remember most) Tanks for the memories was pretty good, Amending Fences is probably one of the best episodes of all time, and Slice of Life was awesome (yes it was stupid, but it was the good kind of stupid, if that makes sense.) But pretty much everyone can agree the finale sucked. Seeing the alternate Equestrias was cool until you realize the Butterfly Effect logic in this makes absolutely no sense no matter how you slice it, and of course Starlight's backstory and redemption. (seriously she was forgiven by the ponies from Our Town, the ponies she brainwashed and took identities from by the way, and they didn't even open their mouths to talk.) I'm pretty sure that Josh Haber isn't cut out for writing for MLP at this point.
+Revkor I disagree about the season as a whole, as I thought it was amazing. But for Starlight's redemption..... yeah, Sunset definitely had a better redemption. Besides, like Josh said, Sunset fits the role of "7th wheel" better.
+Princess Celestia I especially agree with that. Partially cause, ya know. Sunset actually had to EARN her forgiveness. And Canterlot high didn't just forget about what Sunset did. Same with Discord, even though his redemption was kind of rushed too. Even then Discord's screwed up a few times, he's still learning. I'm pretty convinced that there will be an episode that will have Discord mad as hell that he has to do so much to earn trust while Starlight did not have to do shit. And really, the only excuse the mane six could come up with in that situation would be that she's too strong to leave alone, and honestly that's not a good reason to be friends with someone at all. I keep seeing people trying to defend this garbage finale and it blows my mind. Statistically, these are somebody's favorite episodes and that's really depressing.
21:00 - Actually, the Flim Flam brothers universe might be closer to cannon than that. Just to warn you, this is a long one... Sure, the Sonic Rainboom didn't happen, but, with support from her family, Twilight kept studying magic and eventually got her cutie mark and got into the school, with the others finding their own talents (or similar ones to the ones they displayed in the normal timeline) eventually as well. Because of the upcoming Nightmare Moon threat, Celestia decided to keep some of the more magical students close to possibly have a candidate for Bearer of Magic. Thus, Twilight ended up in a position where she had to check on the Summer Sun Celebration. The others ended up there as well (Rarity and Applejack because they live there/have family there, Pinkie because - even if she doesn't live in Ponyville - it's one of the biggest celebrations of the year, and Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash because... insert reason they ended up in Ponyville in the show). From there, the first two episodes play out pretty close to cannon, with other episodes changing in various ways with the group still defeating villains. On to SSCS 6000, the episode also plays close to cannon, with one difference... Twilight is not there. Without Twilight, the group isn't producing quite as much, and the Flim Flam brothers feel less threatened. They don't wreck their last batch of cider, and the towns-ponies don't drive them out. From there, the brothers gradually expand their business in manners technically within the law, and, when the time-displaced version of Twilight reaches the present, they have taken over Ponyville, polluted the surrounding sky, and torn up the forest (I say only Ponyville because it seems rather far-fetched that they could have taken over all of Equestria's business in less than a year). The law makers are trying to stop them because ponies are getting sick and the like, but it's a very difficult battle and a rather new one for the country. But to go back to the episode, why was Twilight not there? Well, Twilight had to talk to Celestia and was gone for a few days when the competition came up. Why? *She doesn't have Spike.* Twilight was able to get back on track for the most part relative to the original time line, but she never hatched Spike. That means no fast, easy, and probably private connection with the Sun Diarch if Twilight needs to talk with her (and she probably talks to Celestia a lot more after becoming Bearer of Magic), requiring Twilight to occasionally leave town for a few days. Heck, maybe without Spike, Twilight got out of her shell a little more because she didn't have him as a constant companion, and she'd left instead to go visit Moondancer and the others or her parents. Either way, the war was lost, all for the want of a horseshoe nail, and the nail in this timeline's coffin might have been Spike.
In hindsight it's really shitty that Applebloom stopped being friends with Twist. After all even after she got her cutie mark, Twist still wanted to be friends with Applebloom and said as much...And it's Applebloom who stopped hanging out with her soon as the CMCs were founded.
"WHY MUST YOU KEEP FINDING HOLES IN MY LOGIC???" Josh said to Ink rose. My response: Because Ink, (Aka your wifu) is the queen of head cannons, she's really smart, and you bow to her adorableness. Also, I ship it.
I thought maybe the Fallout Equestria timeline was where the Storm King won, but the ponies kept resisting and he called up a banestorm that killed everyone who couldn't get underground.
All these references....I can't even. Especially the Dan vs. Cameo, oh my God I died there. It's a shame more people don't remember that show. Anyway, ink rose seems really cool.
I fucking lost it when I saw Sans in the shot. I lost it even more when I saw that Josh fucking saw Sans as well, plays Megalovania whilist the camera zooming in on Sans saying *You can feel love and tolerance crawling on your back.
13:49-14:07 Thank you! It's why things such as Body Snatchers are terrifying, they remove your autonomy and make you the same as them, having no soul or emotions would be utterly horrific, and having no identity would be even worse!
just found these, and they are really funny and well made reviews. I just recently got sucked into this show, why its so good I haven't decided yet, and seeing this kind of content is really cool. Hope you return to make more of these in the future
22:16 It's funny, with the CMC getting their marks earlier in the season, I thought that would be incorporated into how Starlight was defeated. Not entirely sure how, but just a thought.
Josh i think you, and a LOOOT, of people missed a major factor here. Starlight is the culmination of this season's theme. Outside of it being about cutie marks and such, it was about mindsets, and how unhealthy ones can be damaging, even corruptive. From diamond tiara, to moondancer, manehatten or the hoofield and mccolt's land, it was all about what can happen if an unhealthy mindset begins to form. Starlight's backstory looks petty on the surface. But think about it. She let this fester inside of her all her life. She never made another friend, and thus never confided in others. Day after day, year after year, even after she got her cutie mark and beyond that, her fear and hatred grew and continued to taint her way of thinking. Till it reached the point she had convinced herself that hse had to create a 'haven' where she could be safe, and where others owuld not have to fear separation. She became convinced of her 'utopia' and that it helped ponies. And then the mane six destroyed years of work, and her sense of safety, in only a few days. Now i will not deny, the ending was rather rushed in more than a few ways. But as nuts as starlight was, i never got the impression she did not care what happened to toehrs or equestria, even if he solution was to fuck with time and space itself. Hell she even said that she did not believe that her actions were causing so much harm, rather than say 'i do not care if i am hurting others'. Then starlight gets suckerpunched by a apocalyptic landscape and shook her bliefs down to the core. Still it was rather rushed. However i very much bought starlight stopping. Starlight wanted them to pay, but had no concept of the scope of her actions. Just six ponies, how important could they be? Basically her toxic mindset caused all of this, and it took something major to smack her out of it. Doomsday would be sufficient i would presume. As for the timelines. I went on the presumption, from what zecora said, that they were unstable timelines. taht is why you even had one where chrysalis existed. No way she could overcome sombra. It would be a short duel.
+Tad Dad I would agree with that. But Josh is right on one thing: the way the writers handled Starlight's backstory was still weak. I mean yes, when you break it down and think about it then this makes. That's why I think Ink Rose wanted to collab on this particular episode. It's just a theory to me, but I take it she wanted to represent those in the fandom who did more thinking on this moment. Then there are those fans who don't care about the thinking and will dismiss this moment as Starlight acting like a brat when something bad happened to her. So unless you fully explain why this scene isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be, you're gonna have a hard time trying to address it. Believe me I should I know because I did the same thing on MisAnthroPony's and Silver-Quill's review of this episode.
And hey josh. Did you notice the main 6 became the main 7 in both worlds around the same time ? ^^ I know this was done before friendship games but i thought that was pretty cool.
The thing about Starlight's reasons is, it happens a lot. Hell, something similar happened to me. But anyway, the idea that Sunburst getting his cutie mark and moving away souring her to cutie marks and the lesson of picking up the pieces after life-changing events and trying again are both great.
Personally, I like the idea that the alterations to the timeline did not actually change the Ponies' Cutie Marks, but rather when they got them. If you notice, Flutters still has her butterfly mark in the Changeling Victory Timeline, suggesting that all the ponies still got their marks, just under different circumstances. This means that Twilight still eventually got her mark tying her to the Tree of Harmony. Cadence- and presumably Celestia, too- knew Twi before she got her mark, (probably because Shining Armor's Mark also has the Element of Magic in it) so even without going god mode right away, Twilight would likely have still gotten into the Magic School, just not as Celestia's personal student from the start. When she got her mark, Celestia would take her on, but in the intervening time, her five Unicorn friends would have managed to deepen their relationship with her, ultimately taking the places of the Mane Six when the time came to get the elements. Things work similarly to the Normal Timeline events up until the Chrystal Empire, when lacking Spike means Twilight stares at that a door in the basement until Sombra finds her and captures her. Celestia and Luna can't overcome Sombra with the power of the Chrystal Heart, without the Elements of Harmony, which are bound to Six ponies that have been captured or killed. Thus Sombra wins because Twi could not hatch Spike's egg. The Changeling Timeline is similarly set, but breaks down at Canterlot wedding, likely because Twilight never left Canterlot, making her a bigger figure in Cadence's life, which would allow Chrysalis to better note the relationship between Twi and Cadence and apply better planning, preventing Twi from stopping her from ruining her plan to KO Celestia and take her place. With Celestia replaced, the Changelings take over the upper echelons of Equestrian society, explaining why Zecora and her band of rebels were hiding out in the forest. Changelings rule, but keep the ponies around for food. Chrysalis wins because Twilight never moved to Ponyville. Nightmare Moon's timeline is the only timeline that I think includes Twilight walking away from the magic school entirely. This is probably because through some magical means, Celestia got called away to deal with a MAGICAL LASER BATTLE in Cloudsdale. Twi gave up and left, never earning her cutie mark, and leaving the way open for Nightmare Moon to take over the world. Fortunately for Equestria, the flora and fauna in Equestria, Equestria's Moon shines with as much power as its Sun (proven by the sky with both in it in the season 4 opener), however, the lack of motion in the two Satalites caused the magic dynamo that is the Tree of Harmony to cease producing magic, which is why Twilight tries and fails to cast a spell the moment after she and Spike arrive. The only solid source of magic around is Nightmare Moon herself. Weaker magic means the all the ponies move closer to Everfree to maintain their magic. This leaves Discord abandoned, and Sombra with no victims. Nightmare Moon, unlike Luna, would be able to deal with Sombra on her own. So Nightmare wins without Twilight to wield the Elements. Discord and Tirek's victories are in the same vein as Sombra's and Chrysalis's. With Twilight displaced, and without key players, their battles ended poorly. Flim and Flam's Timeline actually stems from an Applejack that understands business from her time in Manehattan, in a situation wherein no villains won. AJ made the Cider Deal with Flim and Flam and they all became quite wealthy. The Wasteland was the one final "Villain" acheiving victory: Discord's Plunder Vines. Without Twilight present, the Plunder Vines strangled the Tree of Harmony, stealing all the magic from Equestria. Everything in Equestria relies on magic to survive to some extent, so without Magic, everything died. The only magic left was going to Starlight and Twilight through their link to the map.
"You feel love and tolerance crawling on your back" Me: Oh I know you did not just make an Undertale reference, I mean I absolutely love the game and fandom but, do you know what happens when you do that?! Undertale Fanatic: *explosion in the wall* Hello beauties and gentlebeauties I'm your friendly neighborhood Undertale Fanatic! Me: DANGIT JOSH!! Also game theory you say- Ddlc Theorist: Darling you need to stop making alternate versions of yourself for the sake of this joke Miss Queen Me: ANYONE ELSE?! Ddlc Theorist and Undertale Fanatic: IT'S JUST YOU AND THE TWO OF US
I would have preferred if Starlight's backstory was something like this.
Thank you
but you have to remember this is a kid's show so that's a little too dark but i agree
Silver Gacha I mean, they’re already discussing Marxist cults here. Maybe children who are going through the same thing with their parents seeing they don’t have to be fit a box like every other child and can be themselves could even be a good lesson for them.
Wait... starlight's voiced by barbie?... wait... HOLY SHIT I CAN HEAR IT!!!!
ZoeTheEpic Yeah. Starlight's voice actor is Kelly Sheridan, who is most famous for voicing Barbie in the movies.

Honestly Honesty wait "holy hentai" THE F*yay*CK IS WRONG WITH YOU?!?!?!?
it's even weirder when you hear starlight rant and imagine Barbie saying it.

Me "AND THIS IS A KID SHOW ;D"
Me "and what's your point."
Munchy Bunny me: something something magic friendship
A kid's show that killed off a main villain in Season 3.
What's your point?
Personally I always interpeted that timeline as the Paraspirte timeline.

WHY MUST YOU KEEP FINDING HOLES IN MY LOGIC??
Because the plot holes in this episode are too big to cover with any logic :P
Sombra even had a better motive. He suffered excrutiating pain every crystal faire, he was insulted by every crystal pony, and eventually he found out why he was the way he was. He was so filled with pent up hatred and pent up despair for him to become the Dark King. He was so strong, so filled with this dark magic he killed Princess Amore. He had a reason for being the way he was. he ruled the kingdom that tormented hin
Uhhh, when was this EVER confirmed as show canon?Isn't this someone's head canon?
Sophie Johnson Its in the comics.
Sophie Johnson Sombra's whole backstory is in the comics
You know the comics aren't actually fully canon to the show, right?
Sophie Johnson Well its the _only_ explanation given about King Sombra.

Ink is currently 19 and Josh is 25, nothing bad there, and if the TF2 analysis vids have anything to say, it's passed
What Josh said was really symbolic and I love that👍
20:19
Josh:Are you high?
Ink Rose:On life

I think that the final alternate future is foreshadowing the upcoming of a very powerful villain, that has the ability to destroy everything and everyone if that villain is never defeated by the Mane 6.
Yandere Fangirl Grogar.....
oh goodness you might be right. with no Magic Luna and Celestia couldnt raise the sun when Cozy Glow stole it...which would either mean a horrible wasteland similar to venus or a freezing pluto like one. or one on either side of the planet. what if this is the future where Cozy Glow won....
+The One Golden Gryphon That would have been so much better than what we got.
Interesting headcanon too bad the writers didn't think of it, (maybe I'd actually feel something)
New jacket?

+joshscorcher Really Nice rewiew. I have miss your rewiews.
+joshscorcher Sombra returns season six

As of season 8, here’s an alternate explanation:
Cozy glow’s plan was to drain the magic in all of equestria.
THE END!!!
Or was just the storm king
Ok, Ink Rose gave me a reason why not to question the different futures *YAY* Josh made the boring stuff of the MLP episode "hillarious" and overall I agree with the rating. I've seen better finales of the series, this was weak compared to Season 5 Premire. Oh well, I still can answer this question "Were you entertained with the episode Blissy?" Yes, yes I was. *"You're Gonna Have A Bad Time."*

That is NOT justice."
So thank you greatly, Commander Firebrand for finally shedding light on the big elephant in the room regarding this finale. And InkRose, I love you, you have a great voice for both acting and singing, but PLEASE don't try to rationalize the irrational. Starlight's problems have no excuse and should be punished accordingly. Hell, I SIDE with her when she admits that herself!

Caleb Ex 9 I was referencing a certain little Devil's dialogue. Sorry, if that wasn't clear.
Josh: "...Wibbly-wobbly-timey-whimey. Or as I like to say, *convenient!"
Me: Or as *I* like to say, Multiverse theory.
Well done. @^-^@
Lyakar HOLY CALAMITY, SCREAM INSANITY!!! That makes a ton of sense

Yes, thank you, Josh! I thought I was only one who didn't like this episode! I'm usually not negative about the show, but this episode just really rubbed me the wrong way, y'know? (My comments were too long for RUclips so I'll shorten them)
- The name is weird and sounds like a beta title for 'Magical Mystery Cure' or 'The Cutie Map' more than anything, because Starlight didn't even change anyone's cutie marks; heck, in some of the timelines, some of the mane 6 still have their marks!
Then she could maybe cry and be like "I wish I could've had that." THEN Twilight offers her hoof to her and says, "You still can..."
- "I don't know why my relationship with my friends is all that important." ...Twilight?
XD
I'm with Josh in that this is one of the weakest finales we've ever had.
I love Ink Rose, she has such a soothing voice and I really like her explanations

I’m gonna stop you here, Josh, because this is where your argument falls apart a little.
The ships are coming in the dock. Also SANS?! WHY IS MY BROTHER HERE?!
The only problem was that the writers didn't explain enough that starlight was going to be twilights pupil
10:15
If I had a heart, it probably would've melted. That is the power of Ink Rose.
Man Chrysalis really BUGS me
Bobbie Sue H YEEAAAHHHH
Ink Rose used Babydoll Eyes!
Firebrand's attack was lowered!
Kaylin Patterson clever
I think this episode is about as good as Canterlot Wedding.
Also, dammit, Ink! There hasn't been a teenager as overwhelmingly cutesie and adorable as you since Tara Strong herself.
As painfully awkward and underwhelming as Starlight's backstory was, social isolation/alienation is still alive and well in the world and some children are even made to be alone, I've seen it. It makes Starlight's history vaguely believable, given how exaggerated the end result was, but then again me and my friends don't know magic. Wish this episode was handled so much better, still...
It’s deeper than that she felt betrayed and furious she didn’t want anyone to feel the same as her. She just took it to far.
That "Everyone died" alternate timeline, for me, is the darkest moment of this show.
Her backstory would make more sense if she was told she wasn't special for not having a cutie mark or something like that
Applebloom's a very friendly, sociable pony.
@@darkdragon7210 Maybe. It would be nice to see more of her backstory.
Am I the only one who utterly fan girled over the sans cameo? Like or reply if you agree. P.S sorry for waking up New Jersey during that.
Edit: oof, middle school me was a little fangirl.
12:00 The official reason for Discord's freedom was the Elements reincarnating, not the CMC.
6:20 I would assume that simply anyone within the spell's effects are not altered.
24:03 Do you REALLY want to have a bad time!?
The news article...
I READ IT AAALLLL!!!
+Nicholas Clubb The backstory that they gave Starlight was clearly meant to make her sympathetic.
Well, at least they got the "pathetic" part.
The opener and finale is what people remember most) Tanks for the memories was pretty good, Amending Fences is probably one of the best episodes of all time, and Slice of Life was awesome (yes it was stupid, but it was the good kind of stupid, if that makes sense.)
But pretty much everyone can agree the finale sucked.

It's funny, with the CMC getting their marks earlier in the season, I thought that would be incorporated into how Starlight was defeated. Not entirely sure how, but just a thought.
(does cheeky grin)
You like Undertale don't you Joshscorcher?
he said he doesn't like Undertale, his heart is full LOVE
He likes the game the same way he likes Magic: the Gathering. He likes the lore and characters, but he got tired of the game itself.
Princess Celestia Makes sense, the game's characters and story are top-notch but the gameplay is more hit or miss

I don't really see her as a comparison to Dan. more like Goober from Meet the Robinsons
Cole Kaizer I see it too.
+Tad Dad ...wow...I never even noticed that. That's a good analysis!
FandeJay thank you. though the question is how much of it was itnended as that XP regardless, it really fit.
And hey josh. Did you notice the main 6 became the main 7 in both worlds around the same time ? ^^ I know this was done before friendship games but i thought that was pretty cool.
Technically, it's MANE 6. It's supposed to be a pun on 'main'.
And the EQG group is called the HuMane 7.
david coplon It actually happened at the same time.
