Nice video on the Ludlums. I have a small collection and sometimes refurbish for friends and love them. I have several calibration devices including Eberline and Ludlum 500. Its been a fun hobby and in Chicago a few historical sites where the first reactors are buried and sadly also the Radium girls graves within a few hours. I'm surprised by how many I've hooked up to calibration unit only to find after 15-20 years since last calibration they are still calibrated. I plan to take the calibration and repair courses this year just for fun. I'm retired and loving playing with these units and kids love them too.
Great video! I have a few Ludlum counters, but my favorite is the model 2241-2 acquired in almost new condition on ebay in the original transit case with the 44-9 and 'hot dog' probes. This is a professional tool that will outlive me. The 1" disc source container with cover is a really nice accessory. These meters are a significant investment, but they are built for extended field use and it is no wonder that these counters and probes are commonly used in Fire Departments and federal agencies.
A few years ago, I took a gamble on a Ludlum Model 3 with 44-9 probe on ebay for $180 (US). The seller listed it as "untested," but I bid on it and won. To my surprise and relief, it works perfectly and even came with a Cs-137 check source stuck on the side. By far the best deal that I've ever gotten on a Geiger Counter
That’s a very sweet deal indeed! I got my Eberline 120 with a check source holder (no check source though), external speaker and a pancake probe (all in working condition) for 100bucks including shipping from UK to Europe. So far that has been the best deal I ever scored.
I’m glad you enjoyed it! I worked for two months on it but unfortunately RUclipss algorithm so far decided it doesn’t like the video and it has very little views 😂 Oh well, not every video is going to be a success
They are! I had to import mine from there cause they are so rare in Europe. Would love to get more American meters but import fees and taxes make it very expensive
I have three working analog ones too! What models do you have? I’ve got a 2, 3, and a 14C with some others floating around here too that I need to fix like a 2401-S and a 26-1 which is digital.
I wonder... Just the clicks aren't much satisfying. Can these devices be used to create an energy spectrogram? Is there an output allowing multi channel measurement and identification?
@allRadioactive no, I have a KC761B and it does it all. Alpha beta gamma and soon neutron in a stand alone device, waterproof, rugged, exchsngeable batteries and full connectivity at 7.1% FWHM resolution... But, I think I may get a Geiger Müller device for collection purposes. But still what's the point if just knowing that something clicks... Not ever knowing what actually clicks...

Yeah the 2241-2 is great and I’d love to have one though I also really enjoy the analog scale of Model 3

Would love to buy one of these. Live in the states, so they are probably everywhere here!

@@allRadioactivewhat brand is primarily used in EU? Ludlum is huge in the US.
@ not sure, I think it varies heavily on country here
I love their digital model… but it’s just a dream. ❤
Who knows, maybe one day 😉
The 2241’s are really nice. I’ll probably end up buying one sometime soon. 🙂
@ I’m in love with the 3000 series but I have no idea how much it costs… and at this point I’m too afraid to ask!
@@AndréSilveira-VA2HAS I think they are around $1500 if I remember correctly.
What a nice Video 🤯 this is so interesting
I have never seen a Ludlum in the flesh. All the Nuclear Labs I've been to use some CoMo variant.
Yeah they aren’t very popular in Europe. I never used CoMo meters though I’ve seen some friends use them in the labs
Really!? The lab I visited last year had Ludlums in every corner.
@abyphysics414
You’re in US while we are in Europe 😉
Yep, deals are out there. I have 3 of these guys
Nice! Here in Europe they are unfortunately not so common. I’d definitely would like to get one of their table top units or scalers

@@abyphysics414 it’s gonna be a long list. I should make a video showing all of my collection

I’ve seen people modding their Ludlum with pulse out for gamma spectroscopy though I think you’d get better results with something like RAYSID

You could theoretically modify it for that use. But you’d need some sort of scintillator. A 44-9 wouldn’t work for that.
