If she was a broodmare for a ranch and they sent her to a sale, maybe she had fertility issues. You're right that she doesn't look like she's had a bunch of foals.
Yes! It is absolutely a thing to get her tested! I did that for mine that I rescued from a rescue here in Missouri. She was listed as a QH, and she is half thoroughbred and has a mix of other breeds! I went through Etalon for mine. Loved the experience and the reports I got.
excellent video. I did this with an untouched/terrified stud. 19years old, and we went for walks and shopping. it worked! I love how she is checking in with you at every new item. she looks quarter horse.
I’d definitely have her tested. It will add to her value and help ensure she gets a great home. So interesting to watch - love the “shopping” approach. ❤
My personal opinion is YES she is a quarter horse. And yes I know for a fact that you can do genetic testing (using a hair sample) 🐴. I have a friend that did it to a pregnant mare she purchased from an auction and didnt know the mare was in foal, and the test told her what the sire was, and what color the foal would probably be. Very interesting. Good job Ryan with J LO 🐴 BLESSINGS 🙌 Jennifer
That was cool getting to see your set up on the farm. Maybe you’ve showed it before but I haven’t come across any videos with it yet. If you don’t have a farm tour video maybe consider it? I LOVE the hay feeders. I was screen shooting trying to see how you did those. I am always looking to improve my area for my critters. I moved to this new farm area almost 2 years ago, it was raw wooded and I have gotten the most done this summer so far. ANYWAYS>…Great Video with J-Lo! You can tell she gives you a lot of try’s and I am impressed with how well that all went. Nice job!
I REALLY like this mare. What an absolute love. GREAT job with her. I take all of mine “shopping” too! She’s going to go far with the right owner. 🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷
OMG! She really loves the attention and wants to learn. She is going to be an amazing friend to someone. Please make sure she goes to a home that has time for her and is able to dedicate time to develop and maintain a relationship with her..
Nice to see her connecting up with you.....still some issues but a big improvement there! She handled the playground OK but no pressure.....that will come later!!
I vote do the DNA test. She could have foals out there winning shows or doing the things, and it could be interesting health-wise to know her bloodlines and if she might be prone to something... Edit to add: Or, if she's NOT QH, mustang mutts are some of the most solid, least health-problem-prone, and smartest critters out there, too!
In some herds, the mustangs are mostly quarter horse. Ranchers would eliminate the mustang stallion and put a quarter horse stallion out with the mares. Then once a year they'd round some up to use as ranch horses and turn the rest back out. I found several herds and a bachelor herd in Colorado one year. None of them looked like mustangs. And all of them would come closer than a totally wild horse likely would.
Possibly an appendix quarter horse? I am so impressed by your patience and methodology. I love watching the 'horse whisperer' techniques catching on with more and more trainers. These animals are so misunderstood in so many cases still these days, and the more success people witness with these kinder more intuitive training methods hopefully will translate into more of this type of training. Thank you.
I think in particular here with this horse is that she actually really likes you. You can see her really finding peace with you. I've seen a lot of your videos and I don't particularly remember seeing a horse with you with more of a connection as this. You should adopt her yourself, I see you being a good pair 😊
J-Lo is absolutely beautiful ❤ I’d love to see her detailed DNA, that would be fascinating. Free Spirit Equine is having one done on a surprise foal that was born out of a mare she rescued. They didn’t know she was pregnant and now they have the most beautiful buckskin filly too. New subscriber here, I’m looking forward to catching up on your earlier videos and seeing this gorgeous mare progress. Thank you for rescuing her from a kill pen. These horses go through absolute hell, to think this mare could have ended up going to slaughter in Mexico or Canada, is unbelievably heartbreaking. 1 from 100’s of thousands, saved. 🙏🏻
I dont have a horse, i live in an aparment building, but its very interesting to me just how much we can learn aboout ourselves when learning about horse psychology
Agreed. I don't have a horse either, and it is not likely that I ever will. That said I find the study of animal behavior fascinating because it does depend so much on the patience, consistency and understanding of the human. Great video, as always, Ryan!
Friend has a mare similar build used on ranch and was rescued does have papers but very sensitive to humans as see lived in a breeding band of mares. Taken a long time for mare to get comfortable but not with riding.
I want to see him under saddle. I like how introspective the owner is-she is aware how her emotions affect his behavior. I’m the rider that has campaigned less than 30 horses (all mine) and I’m always intrigued by information from a professional.
Yes, absolutely. AQHA does have a genetic testing lab where you can verify a horse's genetic history - if they are descended from registered Quarter Horses. Other registries may have the same capabilities today.
This approach works wonders. Just let them shop less is best.❤❤❤ That's exactly what I did with my girl. She was terrified of the tarp covering my hay. It took 3 days. Letting her shop, with heaps of praise for the smallest try. Now if something scares her I can say touch it she will let down and try. The most amazing thing was the day after she over came her fear of the tarp when riding she approached something of her own accord and touched it. She turned around to me as if to say. "I did good didn't I. ❤❤❤ I have a quedtion Ryan what is her base personality?
I vote Quarter Horse based on her shopping for FOOD. 😆😆😆 A DNA test would be very interesting. This mare seems smart and good looking. Clearly it will take some time for her to not default to up/over/go!
Yes... check her DNA! Very nice mare....would be interesting to find out cause she sure looks like there is some good blood there! I may be wrong but she looks a lot like Music Mount bloodline...or Paul A! Really old bloodlines and probably not but fun guessing!!
Bet you’re a great family man! I have zero interest in horses (allergic), but watch your videos for entertainment and also to learn how to handle my dogs…general principles
She definitely needs an experience patience partner. She does look Quarter Horsish. Would not be surprised if something else popped up tho on the dna thing. Good luck with her!!
How old is J-lo? I don’t really know to much about quarter horse’s - she looks like a great little horse with lovely brood mare confirmation and if you want were considering breeding from her again i think you probably want to know her breeding, i know thats what i would want to establish enabling informed planning on her future rolexxxx
I suspect it is more likely she had fertility issues. Otherwise, they wouldn't likely send her to a sale unless they have a drought wherever she came from.
Let me know if that sort of DNA testing is a thing! I have only ever seen where you can check the DNA against a Sire/Dam's DNA that you know. I have Sox's DNA done because I was trying to find out more about his breeding. But, in my case, I have only ever been able to check against other horse's DNA samples and then it is sort of like Jerry Springer -- they are NOT the father.
@@debbiebeans7889 I looked her up on PedigreeQuery. I don't see any obvious reason she'd be built like a QH. But she was a sprinter. All her races were at 5-6 furlongs never longer.
What are those cool hay feeders. I'm magical with ideas but I actually called my husband in to look. He said 'genius'! Am I going to find out that everyone knows about them??? I'll google but I'm sold. She's amazing. Possible Foundation or Appendix? Yes dna. Pull gently on some mane with good follicles and send it off. $50!! She's trying so hard. God love her 😇❤️
No Paso, I don’t think. I have a Paso and she doesn’t look anything like a Paso. Big feet, could be mostly from no farrier, butt looks like a Quarter horse. She’s a fine mare. Long back though. Poor girl. Can’t believe someone would dump her in a kill pen. Crazy, right? Maybe a bit of Thoroughbred. I’d love to see dna testing! (Sorry I put this in as a reply, YT wouldn’t let me enter a comment normally, plz don’t take this personally)
I have no doubt that she is a Quarter Horse, and probably has some excellent bloodlines. I think a DNA test would reveal some good lineage. She seems agreeable and works well with you.

What do you do if the horse gets Alzheimer's?
The more I see the more Quarter horse I get! Test!
When she stands with her head up, I lean towards Quarter & Thoroughbred.
She does look like a quarter horse. She is a nice looking mare, and she doesn't look like she's been overbred.
If she was a broodmare for a ranch and they sent her to a sale, maybe she had fertility issues. You're right that she doesn't look like she's had a bunch of foals.
Do a test for genetics

This is going to be fun watching JLo become a great horse!
So gratifying to see an animal be paid attention to by someone who understands the long range goal. Thanx Ryan…I always learn something from you🌿
I liked seeing how you dealt with the attempted spin away in her new pen.
I’d definitely have her tested. It will add to her value and help ensure she gets a great home.

I love watching J-Lo. Please keep up the updates!
She looks like a Quarter Horse, her Body, Muskels and Bones. I am very interesting too now it. Ryan, you make a very good job with this horse.
What a beautiful horse! ❤ I'm excited to hear what the genetics say.❤

She's fabulous.
If the tests show no QH, then i'm thinking maybe standard bred. Because she's really nicely put together, very solid.

I sure would like to see the end of that ride.
yes

Just curious why you do not protect your hands with gloves. I have had the skin removed with a reactive horse. I am only 5' 4" and 125, but still 🙂
You might want to have her panel tested also. If she has genetic issues might be why she ended up in the kill pen. She is cute cute.
I suspect it is more likely she had fertility issues. Otherwise, they wouldn't likely send her to a sale unless they have a drought wherever she came from.
Yes, on DNA testing. It will be really interesting to understand that process.

Just like you had your foot on the teeter totter… she put her foot on it!
I used Texas A&M for DNA testing and they are pretty good. I have a TB mare that looks just like her.
Really? She looks quarter horse to me and I raised TBs for years. I'd love to know your mare's name so I could look up her pedigree.

I would love to DNA my quarter horse.
I vote no DNA test. If she is a good riding horse, breed means nothing.
She looks more mustang than quarter horse to me... 🤔
Plz do genetic testing
She is lovely...genetic testing would be very interesting.
Long nose and big feet, definitely quarter but probably some draft too.
To me she does appear to be qutar horse. But only genetic testing will prove or disprove it.
I doubt she was a ranch horse, because she has no brand.
Pretty mare
Click-bait!
Do the genetic testing...does look like a quarter horse...may be a mix.....
