I study criminal psychology and Edmund Kemper "the co-ed killer" was a subject I read up on. My brother recently told me about Mindhunter. It took awhile for me to get to watching the show, but I've finally dug my heels into Season 1. I'm very impressed with the actor's portrayal of Ed Kemper and am curious to know how much research he did for the part. I wonder if perhaps he read some of the same materials I've read. There are only a small handful of documentaries and interviews available, although I did speak to someone who served a year in prison up in Northern California where Ed remains imprisoned. He became close friends with Ed Kemper (aka Big Ed.). He wouldn't divulge much information to me out of respect for Ed, but he did inform me that the documentaries and interviews we have access to as the average citizen don't cover all of his crimes nor the details of the crimes... Mindhunter is an excellent show, especially for those interested in the fields of criminal psychology, behavioral sciences and the evolution of criminal profiling for the criminal justice system. I love that the show takes place in the 70's. It's a flashback to a great decade. The cars, the music and the nostalgia make for a rather interesting and enjoyable journey back in time. It was the decade that gave us the term "serial killer" as we know it now. I just finished Season 1 and look forward to seeing where Season 2 will take us. I've met him. I worked at cmf-VACAVILLE for the last 8 months. He's 300lbs in a wheel chair now. Shits himself. I had a 20 min convo with him outside the hospice unit and he was sad a friend of his had just passed which is why I was heading that way to notify my inmates to clean the area. He still talks like that. Creepy.
The Mindhunter version of Ed is nothing like him in real life. The vibe, everything is wrong.
The normalcy of the real killer actually makes him creepier than the actor.

Yes thank you! So many people comment the opposite. The real killer is so much more in command and more in or “present” in his cold bloodedness. The actor seems normal trying to be creepy. The real killer is more unsettling in his measured tone.

I thought the same thing. If there's one major thing I have to knock the show for, it's trying to rev up the creep factor on the killers. In real life what makes them so disturbing is how normal they seem. Especially when the real Edmund Kemper cries when talking about his mother - you really don't expect that level of emotion from somebody capable of beheading and raping (in that ORDER) their own mother.

The crazy thing is, the real Ed Kemper was actually about 4 inches taller than the actor. Must have been absolutely terrifying to have been in the same room as him.

He's not that terrifying. Aside from his proclivity for murdering young women, he's actually a coward and very soft spoken
actually he never meant any harm to men as he had no interest. considering that he was sexually frustrated and he was frustrated with his mom verbal abuse, he wanted to show his aggression on women. so these guys were safe. There was an incident where a female psychologist came to interview him. the interview was going good for like 15 mins or so. he was calm and was answering like any normal guy. but he all of a sudden stood up and started shouting angrily at her. as if he wanted to rip her up. thank God the officers were there to restrict him back to his cell.
My favourite moment in the show was right before they talked to Manson, they went and visited Kepmer. He was reading a book and recording it on tape. That's an amazing detail because the real life Kemper did hundreds of recordings of books for blind people. He was not only really really good at it but he was the people's favourite reader. Many have praised him as their favourite reader. And it was just a small detail in the show they didn't even say what he was doing.

But unless you have contacts at Vacaville's "Blind Projects" (they're the ones who have literally *hundreds* of his "e-books"), it's going to be tough to find them.
I believe the only one they've ever released was his reading of "Flowers in the Attic" by V. C. Andrews, but there was too much controversy and it brought some unsavory attention to their associations, so they decided not to upload any of the others.
There are obviously rumors that some of the people at the associations have family/close ones that have managed to upload some of the e-books for profit, since lots of people who are fascinated by serial killers ("murberabilia") are willing to pays 10s of thousands of $ for a single e-book, especially if it stays exclusive...
It's a complicated affair, lots of money is involved and collectors are always on the lookout for a leak...

The real Ed is so.... human. Mindhunter ed has this eery stillness in his emotion. The real ed talks the way your best friend would. I understand why the cops did not believe ed at first.

It’s easy for a psychopath to play emotions. Most of them don’t feel regret, but know what to say to make others believe them. And for my taste many of the things he said seemed over acted by him.. I am talking about the real Ed.

Incredible show, so sad Netflix dropped it after only 2 seasons. And they wonder why people drop their subscriptions. Netflix needs to focus on the really successful shows and dump a lot of the cheap dross that seems to litter their content choices.
Netflix didnt drop it. Fincher just got tired of doing the show and he considered the rating rather low. But he said that it just a break.
He is thinking about season three now.

I felt the same way, but to me that makes it more unsettling. The actual serial killer just seems like a slightly awkward but very nice guy.

When they overlay their voices saying the same thing, I get chills. What an actor. This is an incredible character study- this is a very talented guy.

Shaxx no actor is supposed to portray some bits of the original but also add some of his own to make the audience more gripping thus most of us found him better than the original because the way his movements and speech attracted us like he made sure he looked slow motion creepy intelligent guy. @@minhchaupho8955 As far as I read, Fincher felt exhausted filming the show. It took a lot out of him to write such a complex show, and dedicate so much time to researching real life cases and recreating them for the small screen. He also wanted to focus on different projects, so there's that. I honestly hope he comes back to it, cause this show is such a fucking masterpiece. It was like seeing a Forensic Psychology book play out on TV.

Kemper was my favorite in the whole show. It’s amazing how this actor somehow made me look forward to every scene involving a serial killer. He seemed so strangely friendly. Amazing job by the actor!

The common thing about both the real and acted Ed is that he doesn't care. He knows what he is, he knows _why_ he did the things he did, but he just doesn't care. Frankly, someone who knows the reason why they murder and does it anyway, completely emotionlessly, scares me far more than someone who commits violence in the heat of the moment.
That's the definition of psychopath. They don't have the same emotional response as other people. They can mimic empathy but can't really understand it.
I think he does care. He tried to resist the urge to kill. He didn't want to but he gave in to it.
I dont agree. I think when you see the Mind Hunter thing, it shows a pompous, narcissistic and self assured individual but the real interview shows a person talking about the details of the crime with such conviction they are even brought to tears. That conviction, the detail he chooses to go to shows his narcissism but I guess they couldn't show it like that. Oh well.
You know Ed personally ? I mean, that is a very fist on the table assessment. I am not standing up for what he did, but unless you been thru the same circumstances growing up, which i have, then you don't know what the guy thinks, feels or cares about.

The real person was deeply disturbed and I felt his pain when he described his mother rejecting him. I have zero sympathy but I have deep compassion for the human being. I had zero interest in the character being portrayed. Now I'll go watch the actual interview. I always want to hear about their childhood.

Absolutely jaw-dropping. This performance keeps coming back to my mind from time to time and to think he got robbed of every award during that awards season. Anyway, Cameron Britton has got something no award could give him which is love for his chosen craft and undeniable competence to deliver it.
he wasn't even close. it's a really bad impersonation. He had hours of footage, and managed to fuck it up from cadence, to delivery.
Mindhunter is excellent, especially season 1. I love all of them and how they covered the Atlanta Child Murders and Wayne Williams so accurately. This show gave me such a renewed sense of pride and excitement about majoring in Criminal Psychology.

I just finished season 2 and the Atlanta child murders went on for way too long, too many episodes. Aside from the fact that it was so so so sad.

I dont like the portrayal of Kemper. I find it stereotypical. Its just the usual creepy creep. Another "copy" of many similar antagonists. And as such because of its repetitiveness of other similar characters boring. A more lifelike portrayal would have had a more "documentary"-effect and for me therefore been more interesting.

I think this is my first time actually seeing the video of the real Ed Kemper, and I can't help but notice how he separates himself from his crimes. "Six young women, dead," "The people who were later dead," "the regret that came later, would've, not had to be," lots of passive language.
That’s what narcissists do. They can’t accept responsibility for their actions. He blamed his mother. A lot of us had shitty up bringings, however, we don’t go out and commit mass murder.

When considering his mother being responsible for his mental issues, nobody shrugs off automatically the responsibility of the killing from the killer himself. Some people actually do have very harmful parents, and they do not end up being healthy. Mostly what will happen, they will develop depression, stress and anxiety disorders. There is a very good chance of some parents being too extreme on their kids, and they might become the next Ed Kemper.
he separates cuz the one time he doesn't use passive language, he starts crying. and i can tell the difference between sociopathic crocodile tears and real crying, and hes genuinely choking back sobs when he said "i knew i was gonna kill her". people that use crocodile tears do it for attention and manipulation; people that really are crying dont want people to see them crying. he downplays it, stopping himself instead of putting on a show
I have only seen clips of the show so I don't know if the actor ever cries, but I think the real footage of Ed trying hard not to cry is better than the interpretation of the role where he just said the line. Ed did horrible things to strangers, acting out violent fantasies aimed towards his mother. For him to verbalize the killing of his mother knowing he had planned it; to think back to the time when he thought 'I won't stop killing till she's gone'. Getting geared up for a grand ending sequence and then she just speaks to him as she would any other night. This is a story of longing to be nurtured and to get the upper hand, to humiliate the one who always humiliated him. He is so eloquent throughout the interview, so straight forward and yet for an instant he looks like a little boy. The actor was very one note in that scene in my opinion, no vulnerability. He/ the scene seems otherwise good I so I think he's capable of doing better and I'd say let's do an alternate take if I were the director/ if they did it both ways I'd pick the emotion to vary the flow of dialog.
@@hellovallis the portrayal of Ed Kemper (or all the serial murderers in the series) is a moral/ethical dilemma. how far do you want to humanise them? is it right to do so? you are broadcasting a show about the scums of the earth doing heinous acts to others, do you want them to be “relatable”? Is it justified for one to blame their upbringing to multiple murders? To me the portrayal was great in terms of toeing the lines. I think it’s a conscious effort by the director and actor in saying that “This guy has a shitty upbringing but no amount of regret afterwards can justify the murders of his multiple victims, including his own mother”.
One of the best series I've ever seen. Have binged watched seasons 1& 2 twice & could watch again. Reading the book the series based on now also. Looking forward to season 3
Once you realize that the real Ed Kemper was also putting on an act, this gets really meta. Ed is a genius beyond comprehension. The ability to compartmentalize like this for many decades is incredible.

Kemper is a true rarity - a serial killer with REAL intelligence, though he was so socially retarded that he tended to come across as a bit of an idiot. I hate the myth of the super intelligent serial killer. Even Ted Bundy was a bit of a dim-wit - not nearly as smart as people seem to think.

@andrew I completely agree. I have been waiting for a couple of days off work together so I could binge and not be concerned if I stayed up late (all night) and get through season 2 and it did not disappoint! Utterly brilliant series. It's rumoured there are 5 seasons and I truly hope so

Cameron Britton captured Kemper's mannerisms and coldness, and yet manages to make him warmer and more accessible--it serves the drama well. I enjoyed every second of Mindhunter, it's very detail and compelling. I love how they take time to explore each character while moving the story along. let's hope Fincher and Netflix bring back the show in the not so distant future.

One of these most important things this show teaches. Some channel did an analysis about this show being "Game of Dialogue". It's really takes me back to when I first saw Silence of the Lambs but on steroids.

Love how they made his footsteps so heavy. It was a weird but effective way to show how intimidating someone is.
The actor is more flamboyant and “friendly”, while the real ed is hyper-verbal and assertive with his emotions and ideas.

Cameron Britton has mentioned in several interviews that the creator didn't want an impersonation of Kemper, just the essence. They don't want to pay homage to the killers they portray on screen. Given that factual tidbit, I think Britton NAILED IT.
Some of the dialogue is word for word from his recorded interviews... They just stripped the empathic facade to show true horror behind the mask.
nah he actually didnt nail it. kemper is aware, honest, in some moments animated when going into detail - recanting how he felt to a T when he was doing what he was doing. Even when crying when speaking about his mom, it showed that ultimately, the catalyst of his undoing was lack of love from his mother and the killing was outward expression of craving love from her. because he couldnt get it, he hated and killed women. he wasn't detached from his reality. he was remorseful but, again, honest. the actor's portrayal was far too comfortable.....and in moments of great clarity, far too cold and detached. the beginning where he speaks about cops loving him.....he was far too pleased with the idea of being clever....even coming off smug in moments(a smirk when saying he wasnt an expert). Kemper didnt come off this way. He was indifferent to it as he saw it as a necessity. and when asked about it, he showed indifference. even reaching for that pizza was cringe because Kemper wouldnt have actually wanted to be distracted by pizza to take his eyes off of the interviewer because he was too focused on the feeling of what he had done and conveying that message with clarity. as an actor he should have actually denied the pizza to stay with the "essense." you cant nail the essence if you dont get the foundation correct. it was a good attempt but it wasnt great by any means.

Biggest difference is how the actor tends to lean backwards, while the real Ed Kemper is leaning forward enthusiastically.

I'm sure leaning backwards was specifically directed. Audiences have become desensitized to a killer's enthusiasm for murder, or at least I have (which is messed up in its own way), it's the casualness of a murderer that makes people's skin crawl.
Boxless Thinking totally, that's what I was going to say. I think the real Kemper displays a casualness through a specific mix of words and emotions that are ever-so-slight, and nobody can mimic it. So, to convey his casualness, the actor was directed to lean back.
Great series Mindhunter !! Loved every second of it. Everything is really nicely putted with the real life Edmund Kemper, Gene Devier, Wayne Williams and more. Much recommended.
The actors for Ed and Charlie were both phenomenal. This show is so underrated. I hope we see more of it

Chilling how? It's not like this actor was going in blindly. I'm sure he watched these interviews so I'm a bit taken back when people say that they're surprised at how accurate everything is? I mean, isn't this the point of non-fiction? Even though, part of the show is fictionalized which makes me thing of the opening scene of fargo.

I honestly cannot tell whether he is showing serious remorse in the end clip or if he is doing a precise imitation of what he knows that is supposed to look like. Even the most arrogant psychopaths usually give themselves away with some sort of tell. I think that not knowing makes it even more disturbing, like someone method acting to the point where they cross over into becoming what they are portraying.
Not really, I find those murderers boring, self-obsessed ("..because what she did to me...", well, world is big to focus on you alone, dummy, so hardly anybody cares!), damaged. Sort of proves, we are biochemical machines, most of us are in working order, killers just happen to have faulty brains for one reason or another.
Interesting he cries when bringing up him killing his mother. Brings a whole new depth to his character that the fictional Ed Kemper lacks, or maybe it was ignored for cinematic purpose. Fictional Ed seems less human, if that’s even possible.
I think it was intentional. They didnt wanted the viewer to empathise with or feel pity for him if thats possible tho like you said.
The fact that real ed kemper cried makes him lesser human! He didnt cry because he felt bad for what he did to his mother, he did so that he could gain sympathy of the BSU agents and portray his mother as the real convict
My opinion is that the actor portrays Kemper's alter ego or the monster/ killer , or the truth about Kemper's nature. Kemper appeared to put on a show as to who he believes himself to be ( sensitive, empathetic ). That couldn't be further from the truth. The killer did not feel any empathy in the moment he chose to kill those women. I believe he sees himself as the victim of a a bad upbringing.
@@jaliz2000 I think you hit the nail on the head. Too many people buy into the real Ed Kemper's story that he chooses to give simply because he's well spoken. The actor's portrayal purposefully cast doubt on it. Back when Ed Kemper was arrested it was an interesting time in the field of psychology, in that men who committed violent acts were often asked about their mother, and how she raised them. It removed a lot of the blame for them, and I think Ed Kemper capitilised on that trend of thinking. It's all a load of crap of course, as many people who have mean, abrasive or narcissistic parents do not go on to murder a bunch of people. That's a choice.
Well if he only killed his mother for whatever reason n turned himself in , also not killing other women I still could think about sympathizing with his situation but he went on killing other women too. He was a loser who couldn't get any girl also badly raised... he killed to prove to himself that he was worthy of something. Makes me sick.
As if noone in this world go through trauma n everyone is going on killing people. He was a skilled psychopath who lacked any empathy.

An interesting difference to me is that the real Kemper is actually easier to sympathize with. He showed what seems like actual remorse, but then again, the psychopath is expert at emulating these emotions. I wonder how much of that remorse was genuine.
I think there is a certain remorse. Maybe not quite how you or I might feel it but I think that, given his intelligence and understanding of mental trauma, he gets what he did and the negative impacts he's had on those close to his victims.
He's turned down parole hearings since 1981...that was nearly 40 years ago...and he's refused them since all under the context that HE, HIMSELF, has CHOSEN not to attend them because he knows he isn't fit to return to society.
He know's he's crazy and that there's something wrong with him. Considering that he knows this I would say that he's aware of his condition, accepts it, and knows that he's a "negative", so to speak.
So whether or not he feels remorse, who knows, but he certainly can see his condition and has the...courtesy...to keep himself away from us.
Upbringing probably wouldn't have had much of a difference. Plenty of people go through CRAZY SHIT in their lives and don't kill others.
However, I will say, that while he has turned down hearings it's hard to say if, given that he's manipulative and intelligent, he could just be stalling all these years to build credibility. Might be released when he's 73 in a few years just to go kill again.

I've been rewatching the show again for probably the 4th or more time and am still hoping for at least one more season showing BTK. This actor, can't remember his name but have seen him in either other shows or movies, is phenomenal! Every detail is practically perfection and the way he gave it his all for this evil killer that truly was a serial killer not just a thought up bad guy, is *chef's kiss*

That is not the problem. He may appear to be manipulative but he know what he did is wrong, he admits he doesn't belong in society and doesn't want to go back. He's not a narcissist, his mother was. Kemper doesn't see himself as the victim of the whole scenario, he just seems himself as a victim of a bad childhood. With that I agree. Growing up with abusive grandparents and a mother is what made him that way. If he was narcissistic, he would never have turned himself in. His hatred for his mother is the real motive for all his murders, not an unbridled lust nor to seek attention, its demonstrated by his actions. After he killed his mother, he lost his urge to kill as if everything was over for him. He had no purpose left. That's why he turned himself in.

This actor did an excellent job and it fit the atmosphere of the show....but, honestly, the real Edmund is much more interesting to listen too because of how matter of fact he is about what he done and you can tell he's very smart. He sounds much more self-aware, especially the way he is just talking straight through without thinking or skipping a beat.... like, he's already thought this through and understands himself because he genuinely wanted too.
I agree with you Brian. I saw the real Ed Kemper interviewed just last week, and like you, I was blown away by how self-aware, calm, obviously intelligent and very articulate he was. As gruesome as his murders were, and let's face it, they were as base as you can get, I felt like I wanted to sit down and talk to him - and felt he would probably answer honestly. Weird!!!

Monica Scott it may be because just looking at him outside of being a murderer, if Ed was given better parents and home life, the guy could have been a very successful and intelligent member of society. He was one shitty mother away from having a different life, a good one. Specialists must love talking to him because of the depth at which he explains every detail. I would def love to interview him. I have seen a lot of comments talking about how the real Kemper shows much more emotion and what seems to be true remorse, but the thing is, if you read "Mindhunter" (the book written by John Douglas about his career as a criminal profiler, upon which the show is based on) Douglas talks about how Kemper was always tranquil, matter-of-fact, casual and had a sharp sense of humor in the interviews. Douglas says the only moment Kemper showed emotion during the interviews was when talking about how his mother mistreated him (which the show correctly portrays). Otherwise he was entirely undisturbed by his detailed account of events and never showed real remorse.
The dark joke about how "mom always wanted people to look up to her" is actually something he said, according to Douglas.
Why is he so emotional in the interview here, then? Well, here's the catch: Douglas didn't interview him *with a camera, for a tv network*. What you're seeing here is a finely crafted performance, both on the part of Cameron Britton's fictionalized Kemper and on the part of Kemper himself.

Veruca Salt no they're real. What I'm saying is that the real Ed Kemper is playing up his perfomance for a camera.
He has chosen to turn down parole hearings multiple times though, I think he's fully aware of how perverse and messed up he is and is disgusted by it. He's not a true psycopath, I can think of few serial killers who truly are/were (Ted Bundy and John Wayne Gacy were undoubtedly psychopaths with absolutely zero empathy). I think he was very well-played in the show and the Kemper scenes are the highlight for me (haven't finished it yet), but I think they overdid the creepiness a little, the real Kemper was better at putting himself across as a "nice", normal guy. It's easy to judge what the killers were like purely based on the sensationalist TV interviews with them, though, you could say the same about the Jeffrey Dahmer interviews.
Kemper absolutely is a psychopath. He's incredibly intelligent and articulate, and knows exactly how to come off as benign and even capable of empathy. But he didn't turn himself in due to empathy for his victims. Psychopaths actually can experience some degree of emotion for others, and they most certainly do for themselves. But it's not the same as true empathy, on any level. He's possessed with a very high, unique intelligence and a deep self-awareness which he articulates and expresses very genially, but this is exactly how he manipulates. He knows how to use his intelligence and "easygoing" nature very shrewdly. He's fascinating to listen to, because he seems so self-contained that he almost -- just almost -- comes off as even tranquil. He has the listener's attention the entire time, and not solely due to the subject matter. He's a very good storyteller (the extended 1991 interview really shows this). That interview of him is really the one to watch very carefully. He also possesses a great wit, which disarms you as you listen to his stories of other inmates, specifically one he slowly "trains" by employing several tactics over time -- complete manipulation to win the trust of said inmate. His descriptions of this are very amusing and witty, until you realize he's got you so caught in his web of charm and distraction that you've become completely off-guard, and feel off-kilter -- THAT'S when I stopped and froze, and realized just how wholly terrifying his trickery really is. It was an awful, chilling moment. He's more frightening to me than watching, say, Bundy, because Bundy is so overtly cagey and cryptic, and doesn't attempt to mask his awful little expressions of smugness, delight, or disdain. Joel Rifkin reminds me just a touch of Kemper -- Rifkin too comes off as very straightforward, benign, a little nebbishy, even almost bored, but he still can't contain the menacing little smirk that crosses his face at times. And he's not nearly as interesting, sharp, or charismatic as Kemper. I think Kemper did genuinely mourn for the self he could have been. Especially when he was much younger, and was really able to feel that huge stretch of future in front of him, the waste of the rest of his life in prison. He knew how smart he was, and how, under different circumstances, he could have had a different life. He knew the tragedy of his perversity, and he did stop it by turning himself in. And in that way, he showed real emotion, regret, a true grasp of who he had become. But that's still not capacity for empathy -- empathy for his victims, and the incomprehensible suffering he caused. He feels emotions solely for himself -- NOT for others. Kemper is really the master of total self-containment, clarity, openness... he gives you the feeling that you can ask or tell him anything -- and nothing harmful could come from it. This is exactly what made/makes him so dangerous.
So many people in the comments saying that they cast an actor larger than Ed to make him seem scarier. Ed Kemper was gigantic, bigger than the actor who played him. Ed was 6'9", Cameron Britton is 6'5".

While height confers some physical advantages (e.g., reach), combat sports are divided by weight because it's a more decisive factor. If I'm standing a foot away, I'd prefer the taller/smaller Ed versus the bigger, heavier Ed.

Theoretically the only way to find out would be to put the real Kemper and the actor into a room with you at the same time (given you could time travel so they were the same age) and have a chat and see which one terrifies you more.
Having been around people that have killed other human beings in real life vs pretending they did I am confident from my experience the real Kemper would make your hairs stand up...

Secondly: The actor clearly tried to follow Ed's dialogue during the interview but read it like a bored highschooler. The real Ed had emotion and had remorse for his actions, wishing he would've stopped himself sooner. In the show, it's more than obvious that they just tried to have him be this stereotypical "creeper" who's overweight, talks without emotion and very little emphasis, and is seemingly bragging about the events he partook in.
It feels like the people who think this is a good act are people who watched the show first, saw the video, didn't actually watch the video, and commented "This actor, man, he did a good job!"

3:20 - this is the most glaring difference between real Kemper and Mindhunter Kemper. The real Ed was appearing as completely normal, casual, regular guy with normal, human emotions. Mindhunter sadly changed him into a creepy, almost emotionless dude just so he could give that more believable "serial killer" vibe. But the whole deal with Ed Kemper was that NOONE KNEW because he was so normal and friendly. if you met the Mindhunter Kemper, you would immediately think that there's something wrong with this guy.

This is personal opinion. But I hate how productions try to keep the fine line between good character qualities and bad character qualities.
In my experience, "beautiful" people are the most ugly. There was no need to make Ed fatter. He wasn't slim. But he wasn't this, neither.

What makes real Ed more scarier to me is the fact that he really is like just anyone you see on the street, wait in the elevator with or stand beside on the bus... the serie version Ed would tingle my spidey-senses right off the bat (😂😂), but the real one Would Not. That's part of the intrigue. We're social animals. Serial Killers, especially the intelligent and well controlled ones, are a dark twisted representation of what makes us all human. Everyone has had bad experiences and mental/physical trauma. All of us has had some thought of horrible or dark fantasies. But the gap between the normal person actually doing it and the killers that do go through with it. That just taps into a question of who we are and what makes us tick.
Scott Williams the point of the show is to find out why they did the things they did, killers like Ed started out in this world just like us, it was how they were brought up during their childhood that made them fucked up. The characters try to see both sides, his human side and his dark side. Just because he talks and cries like that doesn’t mean he’s a psycho. I don’t mean to say your wrong at all, I’m just saying what I think. Showing a little empathy can go a long way.

It is extremely eerie to me that hes crying not for his mom dying. Not for the 6 girls dying.. but hes crying because he feels bad for himself. Truly disturbing.
I suppose that's because psychopaths have no empathy for others, so the only feelings they have probably center around themselves. As a "normal" person I feel that my empathy for other people is so deeply rooted, like part of my very being. It's hard to imagine existing without it. A disturbing though, as you said. Painful even.
The actor did a damn fine job. Could have been a little more expressive and emotional in a few spots but aside from that, he was impressive.
I'd assume that was more direction than a fault of acting. I honestly found the actor's portrayal to be creepier than the real thing due to the repression or complete lack of expression; I'm still debating whether that is a negative for drifting away from the actual Ed Kemper or a positive for sending chills down my spine. I lean towards positive.

Actors, from what I’ve read and from interviews that I’ve seen, don’t really like to do an exact imitation. They like to throw their own twist to a character, even if that character is based on a real person.

We were addicted to watching mindhunter for the past month ... watching the last episodes was really sad as we were about to finish one of the finest..most intelligent scripts and acting ever done

The actor playing Kemper deserves an Emmy. He's absolutely exceptional, and I hope this role leads to big things for him in the future.
Let's not get ahead of ourselves. He did a good job, nothing exceptional
I disagree. He missed the mark. The actor gave his own personality to Kemper, and was not careful enough to capture his essence and mannerisms. The writter, in the other hand, did pretty much copy Kemper's dialogue.

@@nyx7465 Are you his relative or something, Mr. Know It All? You can tell by his several interviews and the series that the acting wasn't completely "spot on". I was only talking about his mannerisms and *apparent* emotions, no need to _know_ him.
