I love how salty people get about a tradition that’s been around since the late 19th century. Nobody thinks Phil has any effect on the weather. It’s just a Pennsylvania Dutch excuse to hold a groundhog. And it probably funds Punxsutawney, PA for an entire year.

The seasonal calendar does not correlate to the calendar you use today. Back in ancient days, some years had 12 months, some had 13, depending on where the sun set in the sky, and the shadow it cast, and planting times were determined by this

Omitted: prior to the use of badgers in Germany, they used to watch bears to predict the season. But then they killed off all the bears, so they had to go to badgers.

  • @marigeobrien

I've always thought that whether the groundhog sees its shadow on Feb 2 is actually a pretty accurate determination of weather prediction... just an old-fashioned one. This video even says the groundhog comes out of hibernation in early February, regardless.
    But, here's my logic:
IF he see his shadow, it's because the sun is shining and there is a high-pressure system in place on Feb 2. IF he doesn't see his shadow, it's because there's a low-pressure system in place and it's cloudy.
These systems tend to go in cycles. If the cycle has a high pressure system in place at that time (Feb 2), combined with the time of the year (emerging spring), you're likely to have one more cycle of cold/wet weather ahead. Thus, there will be 6 more weeks of winter. If there is a low pressure system in place on Feb 2nd, you're less likely to have another before the spring weather begins to emerge.
Of course, we now understand quite a few variables that make this inaccurate. For one thing, its accuracy is only for a very limited region. For another these cycles vary greatly in how long they will continue and are affected by jet streams and distant weather patterns.
But there was some sensible logic to it at one time. In the old days people often observed minor changes in nature and used these as their predictors. Some are remarkably accurate. Like watching the migration patterns of birds, for instance.

His response was " I don't care anything about that!" ,"I don't have any use for junk like that!"..I'm thinking to myself,he must not have any children,or niece's or nephew's,or little cousins,or friends,or was ever a child himself! The Pennsylvania Dutch ( Deutsch) or first German immigrants brought the tradition over.
The date likely is older than 1887 as one record suggests at least as far back as 1840 but weather record keeping was very spotty in early America .

    • @melissasaint3283
      @melissasaint3283 5 лет назад +1

Whistlepigs is a term for groundhogs (exactly like Phil here) that comes from English speakers interacting with French Canadians, who settled in North America very early.
The Fr Canadians called/call them "Siffluer" which means "the whistler" because of the whistle-y, squeaky little sounds they make.
Rock chuck and Woodchuck, on the other hand, are imperfect transliterations of native American terms for them, like Otchak and Wuchak.

How great the United States of America
The height of ignorance and the top of polytheism in God
Although you do not believe this nonsense
You meet, dance and celebrate an animal that God has created
On the Day of Resurrection, you will be asked about this fool
And you will say we were just having fun and playing
As God said in the century ....
    (65) And if you ask them, they will surely say, "We were only conversing and playing." Say, "Is it Allāh and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?"
