Experience Rhythm In A Completely New Way!
I just spent over an hour typing out 7 answers to questions (such as using Steps 17-32 as a chorus, and preparing it ‘silently’ during the Intro/Verse, and items that the MPD 232 can control without a computer) in this comments section, and right at the end, I had to use a different tab to double check a specific model number, and I returned to find that RUclips had reloaded. So that’s all gone. Long story short: I have a Raspberry Pi 3B, and that little thing can be used (upon learning some Linux basics) as a USB/MIDI interface - with 4 USB ports! M-Audio’s Fast Track Pro interface can be used sans computer. The Boss BR-900CD recording unit, AND RC-30 Loop Station have been quite useful for me as well. I have connected MPD 232 with the Novation Ultranova, and the Bass Station 2, and even used it to connect the MPK Mini II to the MPK Mini Play III, just to see if I could. Oh, and some old Casio keyboard, I don’t remember which. It doesn’t matter. What matters is that there are OPTIONS galore for connecting all of these incompatible devices, instruments, and softwares (let’s not forget competing brands!), to a point where it has even become my new hobby lately.
And if anyone thinks this comment is too long:
1. It’s not even half as long as the first draft, and
2. I did it for you all 😁
Hopefully it will help at least one person find the answers they’re looking for.
Finally a creative comment which reflects the capabilities of this underrated piece of gear. So is this thing similar to the Korg SQ-64 which allows you to sequence a lot of different MIDI gear at the same time (along with CV, which the MPD232 lacks), but I was thinking about this or a BeatStep Pro for sequencing all my other sequencers lol. I've got Electribes, Mono Station, Circuit, Kaossilator Pro, and a SparkLE running on a 2012 MacBook Pro. Any advice, brother? Seems you know your stuff!
What DAW are you using in this example?
Is the sequencer and note repeats etc hard coded into the controller or settings in DAW software?
Hardstyle! Just found and ordered this controller used, looking forward to using it. I wonder why it is no longer available new in the U.S. Thanks for the vids.
I wonder the same, is it available new in other countries than the US that you know of? These things have retained their value really well, even used they're still going for almost the original price.
Wow literally no other video would've had a fat gated kick drum! Was waiting for the offbeat bass to come in;)
hehe
Awesome explanation of this unit.
Herfortz Many thanks!
Just got one of these, thanks for the video my guy! 😎🤙
Good review !!
Wondering how it compatible with Ableton
+Shin-ting LIN Thank you. It comes with Ableton Live Lite, but I haven't tested it yet.
I am not quit sure about this "Hardstyle" stuff, really good explenation tho. Keep up the good work.
+Philipp Wallat Many thanks! More to come... ;-)
A trick: you can watch movies at Kaldrostream. I've been using them for watching lots of of movies during the lockdown.
@Parker Dariel Definitely, I have been using flixzone} for years myself :D
To answer your question you can save a sequence for each pre-set so I for instance clone my AD2 pre-set and set up pre-sets 20 to 25 for Intro Verse etc. Video very useful by the way
nick davy can you quickly switch through presents, like changing the sequence while it’s already playing?
@@KristoferProphet You can, but it's not very musical. Glitches for a second while it loads.
is step sequencer works with FL Studio ?
I dig your reviews but I cannot see the sequencer lights on this video... You should consider re-tapping this video with better lighting so we can see the sequencer lights.
+CD3 Music You're right. The lighting is bad in this video. I hope the explanations still work for you. The problem was that either the LCD display OR the button lights were clearly visible with the lighting setup I chose... video recording technology... *arghhh*
is there a way to fingerplay and record unquantized seq?
Wich software did you use
it can be sequenced with drum rack ?
Super Video!
Vielen Dank!
Das habe ich mich auch gefragt. Ich nehme etwas auf und dann??? Hochlanden, runterladen, Speichern irgendwo??? Hast du schon eine Lösung?
Does the stepsequenzer work with with Ableton?
so it´s not possible to create a pattern 1, pattern 2, etc and then combine these into a song?
Can I use the sequencer for external gear via MIDI?
thank you for introducing /i find a second hand with complete cables and S/N without software download card. are there problems? as the second buyer may I have a problem with registration on the Akai website? many thanks in advance
your videos are very good and informative, i must say though the really harsh lighting/over exposure is annoying you cant see the buttons lit or unlit on the sequencer
Thanks, mate. You're right. That's why I bought better cameras and professional lights recently. Problem is that I currently don't have the time for new videos and reviews, but in the future things will be better. ;-)
i would like to add, thank you for helping me how to use the my sequencer on my akai ! im now having load of fun with it! i would have figured it out sooner, but apparently the appendage between my legs prohibits me from reading any instruction manuals :D
what software are you using with it ?
hi! i have a question, did you tried to get it work with pro tools as control surface?i have read some issues with syncing it with the transport controls.
hope you answer!
hi friend, im new in this machine and i dont figure out why my seq rec button doesnt work.can you help me? thanks
Hi there!
Is there a way to make the default velocity 127 in sequencer mode, so that you wouldn't need to manually adjust it afterwards? I notice on yours that your velocity is automatically 127, mine is constantly coming in at 63.
Thanks!
+tylerlw82 I'm not sure, but I believe setting max and min velocity value to the exact same value would achieve that. Cheers!
+XpressPads Finger Drumming Awesome! Thanks for such a quick reply!
Anytime! It's just a guess though. Best regards, Andreas
How to set max and min velocity value on MPD232? thanks!
@@XpressPads How to do this?
What if I set each Pad to different MIDI channels? Can I sequence a multitimbral instrument that way? The software doesn't look like having that option... or just references the pads by their default note #.
i have a m-audio trigger finger pro and it does not sync with DAW know problem they are doing nothing about... does this akai actually work .. want to sell the TFP and maybe by this ?
+dj manix I have been researching on the trigger finger pro a lot recently and I found a lot of strange things and comments of unhappy users and feature/fix requests that are not listened to. No software editor, no factory reset option, and a couple of other (missing) things... your experience with the sequencer syncing just perfectly fits in with all the other things I read. I like AIRdrums though which comes with the TFP, but this doesn't make it much better, right? - My impression of the whole MPD2 series is very good. Fantastic pads, great editor software, massive software package. I think these devices are well-designed from the first to the last process step. Admittedly, I personally don't use hardware sequencers a lot and as the MPD232 seems to have just one sequence per preset slot that might not be enough for you as a DJ?
+XpressPads Finger Drumming Thanks for the info.... i don't need to save sequences , but i do need to record fast, using a step sequencer .. can you create a midi lane for all pads so you can record the MIDI or Audio or both live.... so my loops playing i wanna record kick snare hat clap on four separate channels of MIDI or Audio.... im new but trying to find my way my style ... and i think now that i have had a sequencer i cant do without it lool ... i actually had the TFP working on windows 7 studio one 2.6.. but i cant for the life of me get it synced any more .. had 3 months off and now i am very rusty .. lool ... New Sub thanks man
+dj manix You can definitively rout each pad to different midi channels and then record the midi in any daw or music production software. Thank you for your subscription btw!
+dj manix Both are horrible save your money.
dj manix I have the TFPro and it does sync perfectly to my DAW which is pro tools
Very in depth explanation. The sequencer looks fun and immediate to use. But my only gripe is not being able to save patterns. Perhaps in the next firmware. @akaipro are you reading this????
Jeff Tunque Thanks, mate! Well, the pattern can be saved with the preset, my bigger worry though is that it seems that only one pattern per preset can be saved.
[deleted]
+Neal Ryan Harris think of the preset as a storage bin. the pattern is your beat or whatever you make, and you store that in the preset, or storage bin
save them in your DAW
Can someone please tell me how to change octaves on the mpd232
just ordered one literally 5 mins ago. just a question, I know it's a drum sequencer but do u reckon u can use it to sequence synths n shift the pitches if notes?
I guess you've already found out, but you can change the note of each pad. You can also set the velocity of each step. It would make a great arpeggiator.
I cant get the step buttons to change in velocity from value 63, without having to use the mac editor, do you know how to do this ?
Use the FULL LEVEL button when inputting notes.
IS posible use knobs like efekt for sequence? I want use efekt only for sequence with no changes in Samples. Thx
Can the mpd232 recieve midi signals to change the pad colors ? I'd love to use it together with steinberg Groove agent 4. On one side for finger drumming, on the other side for step sequencing.
Hi!
I ask a question: Can I make more patterns, or I must use one? Can I mute the pads?
+Antal Trab Hi, you can only create one pattern / sequence. I believe you can't mute pads "on the fly", only via edit mode.
control bank
How can I find the CC numbers for each button so I can program my Daw to communicate with my MPD 🤷🏽♂️
Use the main knob. Some there should they be. Or better with the software for configuration.
When using the step sequencer...how many bars can you make your pattern? It seemed like only one bar?!
32 steps
Which Soundpack/Samples did you use in this Video ?
+Thomas Fischer That's from the Trigger Finger Pro sound content. AIRdrums
Does it work with standalone VSTs or only within a DAW ?
Standalone are no VSTs. But it works also with standalone instruments.
ive got one used...it workls so nice with battery 4....Yes....with standalone softwares.....the sequencer is only 32 steps but you have some previous idea abou the track youre trying to build
Pattern export in Ableton?
Is it mapped for reason!?
Thanks for your good tutorials! I still have a question about this integrated sequencer. What can I do, when I have my beat done? Could I export the sequence somewhere, or even name the song and the save it somewhere? Could I load some new sequences in the MPD? Well, I don’t understand this at all. It’s fine for making sequences, but what’s next?
Thanks for your help.
You can record the seq as a midifile in your DAW
Oh ok. So that is the workflow? Thanks.
Hi,
Can you do "Note repeat" like Push 2??
Thanks anyawys.
Yes
Hi can this be used with iPad? Would be great to setup with Pure Acid
I can use it on my Samsung Android tab;et, mainly only for triggering though.
Very very helpful video.
There is anyway to sync the sequencer with my DAW? (Protools or Logic)
Joao Noto you need to put logic preset your mpd, you can do it with mpd editor
I just got the akai advance, this looks like it would go well with it but im also considering the trigger finger pro. Anyone know which one is better?
+sacor07 I don't have the AKAI Advance, but I once had the Trigger Finger Pro... and wasn't very impressed by it.
Hi! , can you add samples by midi usb to the pads ?? thanks!
It's "just" a controller. It depends on your software.
Thanks for these videos, I just got the mpd232 and the videos have been very helpful. I love the mpd232, but I can't seem to figure out what the faders and knobs to the right side do. Could you explain what they do? thanks
You can use these knobs and faders to control your software plugins within a DAW or even the mixer of the DAW itself. These control elements can be configured using the editor software which you can download for free from the akaipro product website.
thank you so much.
Anytime! :-)
It that compatible with Logic Pro X?
yes; it even has a preset for logic pro x.
Do you experience any note latency recording in your DAW using external clock sync on the mpd232 (from your DAW)? when recording into your DAW with the step sequencer? I experience a delay in recording in ableton. it puts the notes one step further if i program them on the mpd232 step sequencer. c.getsatisfaction.com/akai_professional/topics/mpd-232-seq-rec-with-ableton if so pls report to Akai the more people reporting this issue the sooner I hope they will fix this...
sven van bavel I bought this unit recently. With protools it locks perfectly. Very happy with it.
Nice work, much appreciated.
so can you make a beat without any other hardware and software or is it a controller?
It's (just) a controller with sequencer included. So you have to use some software with it as well.
ok thx.then i better save my money for an mpc studio^^
It appears this model has been discontinued, I looked everywhere on Sweetwater, GuitarCenter, ZZounds, Musicians friend, and more. Why when I find something I like does it always get discontinued?
Christie Ann - Music Production Hyphenate - Hi, looks like it’s still available on Amazon: www.amazon.com/Akai-Professional-MPD226-Controller-Software/dp/B0116X1BJI - a bit over $300. Good luck!
Bought one for 200 euro on thomann
good job
what's it like without a computer just hardware?
+David Whelan Well, without a computer you can't really use it, because the device itself doesn't contain any on-board sounds. Cheers.
But it can sequence external sounds right I was thinking my circuit and volca sample ect?
+David Whelan I assume you can do this, but you'll need an external power supply for the MPD232 in that case. However, I haven't tried that kind of setup yet.

how can I make it loop longer?
+footballallday1967 Not at all, as far as I know.
Thanks bro, What about the faders??
Thank you XpressPads Finger Drumming!
What I can say, this device looks fancy but actually does nothing special !!!
1.I can´t! copy patern from step sequencer to my daw?!
2. I can´t! use transport section with my daw!?
3. I can´t! hear which sound I´m selecting when I´m building sequencer.......
Thank you Akai, please do some upgrades!
Just hit record arm in your DAW and play the drum sequence you made on the MPD232, the midi information will then be record the midi track of the channel selected.
This item works for FL?
There is a configuration on the software for FL. I think yes, it does.
Hello there !
Thx for your great and easy to undersyand tutorials :)
Could you explain us how to sequence the mpd232 in slave with Logic pls ?! Like if it can start from the Logic sequencer ?!
Thank you !
do these pads also suffer from the double triggering like the mpd218 and 226?
It does not work with mpc beats here.. Ableton, fl, etc it does.. Whyyyuu
iPad compatible?
I think so... with camera connection kit. But better double-check with the akai support.
M-Audio Trigger Finger Pro has much more to offer and is the same price :/ Just nobody knows about this controller
the pads arent as good to me on the m-audio i own both
this is not working for me... I followed every step and no sequence is created. I am using garage band.
The step sequencer buttons don't light up :(
Yes, sorry. had an issue with lighting. either the lcd display wasnt visible or the buttons. I had to make a decision... 😧
XpressPads Finger Drumming
Thanks for the fast reply. Do the step sequencer buttons light up?
+Jim Shannon yes, they do.
Ah, in that case, this might be worth getting, thanks.
why is all always bum bum bum bum... what is happen to the music in this world...
but good video and the unit is interesting, i think its were a nice companion to my Force...
It's just a demonstration. Not a song. And trust me, there are many good music going on today.
Check out Holy Hive, Pink Siifu, Mononeon
Sometimes it is also…bim, bim, bim, bim
I came here because I couldn't get a sound out of mine. Still can't
Have you got the sound yet
I just did mine
This is a controller, it wont make any sound on its own. You have to connect it to a computer or tablet via USB or to other gear via the MIDI adapter provided
lol krankenhaus op kick
