    Leif Erikson and Erik the Red were the first Western people to "discover" the Americas. Although, the real credit goes to the nameless migrants from Siberia who are the ancestors of modern-day Native Americans, as they were the first humans _by far_ to have settled these two continents --- a minimum of 10,000 years ago (although it may have been much longer).

    • @lalakuma9
      @lalakuma9 2 года назад +4

    It's been well documented that the Vikings visited Newfoundland way before Columbus sailed from Europe. Here's what the BBC said "It has long been known that Europeans reached the Americas before Columbus's arrival in the New World in 1492." Now you know why I pay attention to the BBC and CBC and ignore American media. The hype from the paper in Nature is that they used a new dating methodology that allowed for a more accurate date. Did ABC provide fake news? or are their employees examples of the American education system? You decide.

    • @wctoronto
      @wctoronto 2 года назад

      No, not fake news. Just misinterpretation by viewers and the writers/host not wording it more appropriately, which probably led to audience misinterpretation. Nothing mind numbing. Nonetheless, a new scientific dating technique is probably celebrated by scientists and is a huge win/accomplishment.
      What may be seemingly a small discovery to you and those not closely involved may be critical to others - all discoveries are not insignificant, but eventually lead to progression and greater advancements.

    As to who was first - I can point to the inscription on the back of the Leif Eiriksson statue which stands in Reykjavik, Iceland - and which appears as background graphics the video. The statue was a gift to Reykjavik from the US to commemorate the 1000th anniversary of the Althing, the Icelandic parliament, which was founded in 930. It reads:
    Leifur Eiricsson
    Son of Iceland
    Discoverer of Vinland

      History is just as important as the present and future - perhaps even more so. Without learning from the past and developing ways to provide more accurate information, how can we improve and make a better tomorrow? For example, how can medicine and environmental science progress without collecting data from the past to continuously improve methodologies, tools and solutions to life’s biggest issues? Historical data and achieving accuracy is critical. Solving problems is a progressive process. It often doesn’t happen ‘overnight’ nor without relying on the past. That’s what an “adult” does.

I said past, present and future are all important…all are closely linked in many ways and dependent on each other. I guess you changed your stance about history as being important. You originally sounded quite defiant and appeared to have a forward/present and future siloed view. You also seemed very dismissive about the significance of the ability to carbon-date with more accuracy (that was the new discovery, not the viking settlement itself). Like I said, each discovery (no matter how insignificant it may seem to you) leads to progression over time.
      I manage process improvements for a living. I cannot do so without gathering info/data from the past. I cannot problem solve and design a future state process without fully understanding the past/current state. I also need metrics to measure these improvements. You may have heard of the term/best practice, “Lessons Learned”. Life’s critical problems also works in a similar manner, so we can try to avoid wasting time/money/resources making past mistakes or wander aimlessly without planned purpose.
