The Medieval village of Rocamadour - One of the Grand Sites of France 🇫🇷

- The village of Rocamadour clings to a precipitous cliff above the River Alzou. Since the Middle Ages it has been a major site of pilgrimage and more recently tourist destination. The lower part of the site is the village where today cafes and restaurants jostle with souvenir shops. From here a stairway (The Grand Escalier) climbs to the Religious City where a cluster of chapels hang from the cliff. In the late 12th century this was a destination for even Kings of England and France. Even in recent years Popes have made visits here. Continuing to climb a path lined with Stations of the Cross lead to a Sanctuary before arriving at a castle which crowns the cliff. A beautiful place to explore day or night

The cliff side village, the chapels half way up and the castle at the top make a fabulous view. It is hard to imagine how people could have created such architectural wonders or even conceived them.

What a breathtaking video. You have taken your viewers seven centuries back in time. This is a testament to the craftsmanship of the builders of this village. The structures have survived through earthquakes, wars, and the elements, truly amazing. Definitely a place to visit.
It is a pretty unique place although there are many beautiful villages scattered across France. We really enjoy wandering here. We have been back a few times and are never disappointed.

We cannot get enough of places like this. The whole of France (and the rest of Europe) is so wonderful to explore and we are lucky to have so many options close by. It is amazing to climb those long stairways to the chapels and think of the great medieval Monarchs and famous historical figures who had passed up the same steps before us. My main interests were History and Geography so France is a dream destination for me. Everywhere has a story to tell. Warmest greetings Ivor & Robert

It is one of those places that you never forget your first view. Years ago wandering with our tent we arrived at the viewpoint that revealed a view down the valley and were smitten. We have been back quite a few times since. Thanks for taking a look.

There is so much more to France than just Paris. Paris is a lovely city but France is a big country with a wonderful landscapes and so much interest to explore. If you get the opportunity I am sure you would enjoy.

Hello Helene & Serge. So many stories here. The sword has many legends surrounding it. It was claimed by some that it was given by an angel to Charlemagne who gave it to Roland his greatest Knight. Some claim it belonged to the Trojan hero, Hector. It is likened to the British tales of Excalibur (but that now lies at the bottom of a lake, somewhere). Rocamadour is always an interesting place to explore. It is amazing to think that Kings of England and of France made their way on their knees up the Grand Escalier to the places of pilgrimage. Hope you are both having a good week.
@@IvorsTravels Interesting thanks ! We are doing fine even in these cold temperatures we had Friday and Saturday with some -30’s and -40’s with the wind . Now this morning we have -16 and -23 with the wind and this is in Celsius 🤪

Fascinating place, it really does cling to the side of the cliff! Boggles the mind how they made those buildings centuries ago. Expert editing on the sunset and night time clips rounded off a great video 👍
It is one of those places that is such an impressive site that just takes the breath away when you first see it. It has an amazing history and it is such a moment when climbing the Grand Escalier to realise that you are treading in the footsteps of so many, medieval monarchs, popes and pilgrims who have walked before you over the past 800+ years.
Wow! That castle looked like it belonged but also like it was going to fall off the cliff!
First time you see the view of the village it is truly breathtaking. We have been a few times and we always are thrilled to arrive. Thanks for watching.

This is one of the most spectacular sites in a country full of medieval wonders. The first view of this place, many year ago now is one i still have not forgotten. Each time we return there is still a thrill at being here. Hope you have a great weekend.

Thank you Simon. As a teenager we were always aiming for the mountains and the part of France we saw (the industrial north) was not so attractive to me at that point. When we did start exploring further we found a real treasure trove of beauty and interest. We now really enjoy finding such delightful places but alo exploring the landscapes. The sword, Durandal, is surrounded by legend with claims that it was given by an Angel to Charlemagne (who gave it to his bravest knight) or that it was the sword of the great Trojan hero Hector. It is perhaps the French equivalent of Excalibur. Whatever the truth it is a great storied item to see. Have a wonderful week.
