STOP Looking down and relocate that GPS on your F850GS (F750GS)

- The stock position of the GPS mount from BMW is a safety concern in our opinion necessitating you looking down at it as opposed to watching the road. This video is a guide to help you relocate yours on your BMW F850GS or F750GS.
It also prevents being able to attach a tank bag safely.
There are many kits out there, find one that suits your needs.

I found too risky to keep looking down at the GPS on the handlebar and decided to reposition it. I followed every step in this video on my 2024 F800GS. Thank you for this detailed video.
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching and ride safe
Thanks for showing everything in such detail. You made my job so much easier knowing beforehand what I was getting into. Revealing the plug location and how to get to it was gold. Keep up the great videos and keep enjoying your journey. Especially nice to see good content from a fellow Canuck. Just outside Toronto, here
Hi, very glad this video helped you. And thanks for watching. Appreciate your comments. Ride safe and hope to see you on the road. If you come to the rock, let us know.
@@OurGSJourney might just do that, tentatively next summer. Long time riders here starting our own GS journey; me on an 850 and my wife on an 800. This year we will be exploring the NEBDR. Cheers!
Very much so... I was involved in an accident on the last leg of my Trans Lab ride in Montreal last September. I was lost in the downtown core and looked down at the GPS for direction. The 3-4 seconds it took to look down was just long enough not to notice a road rage incident which was happening in front of me. A vehicle break-checked the car that I ended up hitting. All this, I believe, happened as a result of the extreme angle that I had to look down at the GPS. I recommend this conversion for sure. I'm surprised BMW Motorrad hasn't addressed this.
Oh boy. I did hear about your incident and thankfully you lived to tell the tale. Very happy about that. But proves the relocation is a must upgrade to your GS.
Hope you’re still riding. Stay safe and we’ll see you on the road.
@@OurGSJourney Thanks so much. The bike was taken by insurance and written off (after I rode it home), but I walked away without a scratch. Lucky lucky lucky! I’m still riding, dirt only, but will be looking for a new ADV bike next year for sure!
Hi Patrick, today I relocated the GPS bracket on my 2021 750GS as described in your video including removing the side panel to route the cable neatly. Your video was a great help to me, thanks a lot. Just to share some info, my windscreen and the bracket (both GIVI) were purchased from Carpimoto, Italy. They have many accessories for the GS and are very fast to ship the parts. Thanks once again and keep sharing your experiences.
Thanks so much for watching and I’m glad to help. And thanks for sharing a new source to buy some goodies for our GS. Ride safe and see you on the road.
This was a great improvement for my f750gs and I feel more comfortable and safe, thank you very much for this video

Hi Patrick, great video here: It really helped me a lot in relocating the GPS holder. Great stuff :)
Hi and thanks for watching
Glad it worked out

Thank you very much for this great video. I bought my first bike (2022 F850 GS Adventure) at the age of 44. I was looking for how to do it and I found your channel. Just subscribed and really great content👍🙋♂️
Hi there and thanks for watching. Appreciate the feedback. Look for more content coming in the new year.

Excellent video. Recently purchased a 2022 F850 GS, and will be using your video as guide for possible gps relocation.
Hi and thanks for watching. Please check your application and bracket for your year. Our bikes are 2019 and although many similarities year over year, there could be a slight difference. Ride safe and we’ll see you on the road.
Thanks to your video i managed to do this myself. It was a great help.

Hi, my 2020 f850gs adventure came with this mount set up as standard. Poor reviews of the Nav VI system made me question spending $1300AUD. So I’ve removed the Nav prep and used the spacer bar to mount a Quad Lock system instead. The positioning is perfect. In all but the worst weather my ph is protected. Bluetooth allows me to connect to my bike and helmet comms. A much cheaper and effective alternative.
Hi and thanks for watching and comments.
Our Nav were discounted.
We do love the quad lock.

Hi. I have just carried out this exact task on my 2018 F750gs. I'd watched a post and yes it was relatively easy to do the job. However you have added another dimension to the alteration by diverting the cable. I didn't think about that aspect and my cable is nowhere near as neat as yours. Which means I can't rest until I've altered the cable routing. Thanks for the video and very informative post.
Hi

Followed your instructions, fits perfectly, thank you 👍
Glad to hear. Ride safe and we’ll see you on the road perhaps someday
Nice video and well done. I actually prefer the sat nav on the bar clamp though. I have my bmw and triumph set up that way. Not much different than looking at the bike display for me. To each their own though. Nice work.
Thanks for watching and ride safe
Great video. FYI - I was able to unclip the plug without taking off the side a penal which will save you some time. I did not re-install the housing as I can’t justify spending the money on a separate GPS system when I have my phone, although I’ve already had a problem with the phone overheating in the sun. Good luck.
Thanks for watching. Ride safe
Very clear and precise instructions, thanks very much👌👍

I mounted it on my F850 GSA and this video really helped me out. thanks for the detailed explanation. I am experiencing quite some vibrations. I know it's not the same mount I'm using. Here i got the one from GIVI. it's mounted on the same screws as the side windscreens.
I’m glad this video helped and thanks for watching. I can’t speak to the GSA as we have GS. I understand the GSA has adjustable windshield bracket. Our bracket is mounted to the windshield bracket as you saw. I find our side plastics vibrate when going over bumps. Perhaps the source of the vibration. If we can figure out how to solidify those, may help with your mount.
Hi Kiapo, whath is the GIVI reference?
Great job, thank you very much for your effort and all the details !!!

Great video. I mount a similar bracket on 750 2023 from touratech, but the vibration is just the worst. I even lost my phone. It fell off from the cradle
Thanks for watching
Our brackets do not vibrate at all
Very solid.
We also use Quad Lock case and mount aside from our GPS mount.
Very thorough and clear. Thank you.
Thank you. If there are other DYI you’d like us to try, let us know.
It’s a no brainer. I procured a BMW bracket for this purpose. Extremely simple to install and a game changer. Why the F..k BMW doesn’t make it OE is disappointing.
Game changer is right. Thanks for watching. This is an easy DIY mod and everyone should do it. Ride safe
One thing to consider if you use cellphone in the cradle - original on handle-bars location has least vibration, lowering chance of damage to phone’s camera.
Very good point and thanks for watching. A new video coming soon is my cellphone holder from QuadLock with vibration damper.
@@OurGSJourney i use official BMW cradle connect for a while now; no damage on handle bar and it’s awesome in functionality and quality. But relocating to where you have is is no question a better location.
My only concern is that vibration rumored to damage cameras.

Hi, Thank you so much for posting this great video. I love that you went into details and addressed every step of the process. Now to my question: I am short for a man, 5' 6" (168 cm) and have a 2021 BMW F750gs with the optional extra low seat. I am considering relocating the stock BMW GPS mount exactly like you showed in this video. However, because of my short statue I feel that after the relocation, the GPS mount will block a good part of my view of the road in front of me. For a taller rider like you the view is blocked to a lesser degree. Assuming that your wife is shorter than you and possibly closer to my height, could you ask her what her experience is with having some of her view blocked by the relocated GPS mount. Thanks again for the video and for helping the rider community.
Hi Johann, thanks so much for watching. I’m 5’8” (I’m not super tall either) and my wife is 5’6”. She has a 750GS with the low seat. Not the extra low. She said has no issues with obstructed view she mentions.
A suggestion is perhaps tape a piece of cardboard in the approximate location of the relocation and try it.
Awesome video! I think I missed the product you used. Do you have the name or link to the relocation bracket by any chance?
Thanks! :)
Hi and thanks for watching
We got our brackets in AliExpress. However there are many sources. Check you application to be sure and year of bike.

Hi, thanks for sharing this info. I have recently purchased the bmw cradle for my F850GS 2020 and they fitted over the handlebars, I then went back and asked them to install the BMW Trophy Nav holder in order to move the cradle to the windscreen but it just doesn’t fit in the bike (although is listed on the BMW Motorrad as a compatible accessory) so my question is, what bracket have you used to hold the cradle in the windscreen? Could you share the link please? Many thanks in advance
Hi and thanks for watching
I purchased from AliExpress
There are many options on the market and please make sure you search compatibility

it beggars believe that bmw designers actually thought it was a good idea to locate the satnav on the handlebars.
Hi and thanks for watching.
I believe in later years they moved the cradle to a safer viewing location like what I have done here.

Hi good video I too need to reposition my GPS screen. Can I ask as question, what does he old position of the GPS look like?
Hi and thanks for watching. Look at the video at about 2:30 and 6:30. The old position is on the handlebar clamp. Head way down.
Hope this answers your question. Ride safe.
Hi, just discovered your channel. I am looking at buying a GS 750, and wondered what it would take to move that gps cradle, so this was a perfect video, well done! I do have another question in regards to the gps itself. Do you need to use the BMW unit, or will others work with their cradle?
Hi Pat and thanks for watching. To follow answer your question, I suggest you look through some forums and look for the particular GPS you are considering if not the BMW one. But my knowledge base leads to tell you it should not be a problem. Find a cradle for the mount. Some GPS will run off battery. While others you may need to plug into the DIN plug or you’ll need a USB or cigarette lighter adapter. The later is another future video coming soon. The BMW cradle comes with its own plug tying nicely to stock wiring.
Let us know how you make out. Ride safe
@OurGSJourney When removing the cradle from it's factory location, is there a removable tube the secures the cradle to the OEM mount so you can mount it on the bar? My F900XR has the same cradle mount but this detail is missed in every video I've seen.
Hi and thanks for watching
The stock mount has a black bar but the new mount also came with one.
I’m not envisioning your question totally.
The cradle comes apart and wraps that bar (tube)
Great video! Thanks for sharing. I wonder if the original BMW OEM windscreen will be enough to protect the relocated gps from wind and rain. Or is it necessary to have a larger aftermarket windscreen to do the job?
Hi and thanks for watching
I believe the unit is waterproof. It is an adventure motorbike after all. But IMO I would opt for a taller screen. Check out my video on the VStream

I don't see the windshield adjustment on your setup ... I'm wondering if the bracket gets in the way of the adjustment lever? I have a 2022 850GS

Great video. I am willing to buy something like this too. My question is if I can still use the up/down mode of the windscreen. Thanks in advance
This video was excellent. I ran into a problem doing this for my 2019 F750.. For some reason, the factory wiring takes the wire through the middle of the frame of the bike. I can't figure out how to thread the connector out to then re route it. It's just too big to fit through the frame. I am stuck! The only option I can see is to cut the gps harness wires, which I don't want to do. Has anyone else made this comment to you?
Hi and thanks for watching. This is very strange and never seen this before. You may need to “de-pin” the connector, slide the wire out, and put the connector back on. Hope this helps you.
Ride safe
@@OurGSJourney Thanks for your response. Yeah. I am frustrated by it. Weary of "de-pinning" or cutting, for sure. I would love to send you a photo of what I am seeing, just so someone else can share my misery, I guess. Actually, you might be able to peer into your wife's bike and see what I am saying (unless the guy wiring my bike thought he'd mix it up and do something different at the factory).

I already have the bracket but hesitant to install I'm thinking it might block the view in front of the bike, how is the vision after installing?
Hi and thanks for watching. My opinion is unless you’re shorter then 60” this won’t be an issue. I’m 68” and see well over it. Other option for you is this is an easy modification and can try and worst case you don’t like it and spent a few hours on a Sunday morning working in the garage. Ride safe

Too bad...your video is helpful but not for F850GS Adventure and Rallye 2020 which have an adjustable windscreen. Do you know if (in the meantime) there is a bracket available for my 2020 (bluecoloured) Rallye? I saw one at Aliexpress which rests on the windscreenbracket but I'm afraid that will be a little shaky...
Hi and thanks for watching. A few others on this video found a mount for their GSA but did say there was vibration and mount not as secure. Try looking outside of AliExpress and perhaps turn to Touratech or the like. I’ve also noticed there are more aftermarket companies outside of North America that cater to the GS or adventure world.
Let us all know your findings and ride safe
@@OurGSJourney Hi! YW! In the meantime I found another RUclips video about this subject. It seems that the very Touratech is a shaky one. There seems to be a OEM BMW bracket (also not cheap) which is much better for the GSA and the 2020/21 Rallye with adjustable windscreen. The partnumber is 65908544610; it's from BMW Emergency Services and called GPS-bracket. This is the link of the video: ruclips.net/video/1w6MpIF-1o4/видео.html

Does relocating the GPS cradle void the warranty on the bike?
Hi and thanks for watching. Great question. The relocation doesn’t modify any electronics, wiring, or the like. Perhaps a discussion with your dealer.
How do you like the BMW GPS VI unit? BMW just launched a connected ride cradle (for the phone instead of a GPS unit). I’m still debating which one should I get.
I like the GPS from BMW. It allows me to use a Quad Lock mount on my phone for other things.
Hi Alvaro, you will still need the sat nav prep as the connected ride cradle fits into this. It does not stand alone. The many forums I’ve read tend to be critical of the gps vi unit and unless you’re planning on venturing regularly beyond ph signal, your ph will do the job well. I already have a BMW GPS VI prep unit installed but have removed it. I now use the spacer bar on the mounting frame to attach a Quad Lock housing, with wireless charger, for my phone. So far, so good and my screen provides good weather protection too.

Hi, My F 850 GS has adjustable windscreen (factory stock 2020), so the windscreen suport is different than yours (wider and much closer to the dashboard). Therefore I can not fix a a navigation bracket ( the side part of the bracket is not wider than the windscreen suport). I tried to change the wind screen with the one recommended by you from national cycle, but unfortunately they only provide the windscreen without suport. From where I can buy the same suport you have in the video? if i find the suport, I can both instal the bracket and a higher windscreen
Hi and thanks for watching.
You can get the part from BMW to support your windscreen. It should be about $50 CAD or so. Not sure where you live. Check with your dealer some diagrams. They are there to help as well.
Hi, did you find something interesting as the option for your/our bike?
Do you have to use torque tool for this job?
I did not use a torque tool. Thanks for watching.
Hello. That new support for gps e BMW product? Can you share de reference? Another question: Does it vibrate a lot?(I read somewhere it did vibrate a bit. Thanks for sharing.
Hi there. Thanks for watching. This product is a AliExpress special. Very sturdy. No vibration by the way it’s mounted.
This doesn't work with the adjustable screen though, different back on the housing, so doesn't fit. With the standard housing not a problem, so it's a toss up, have flexibility with the screen, or move the satnav unit, luckily I use TomTom rider, so ram mount on my bars and total removal of the Garmin crap
Yes the GSA uses a different windshield mount.
Ram mounts have a tonne of purposes. I use them for my mirrors and cell phone.
@@OurGSJourney Garmin have discontinued their current satnav for the GS, nothing new about the next model yet, but I remember when they discontinued the first TomTom rider pro, you could no longer update maps, so something tells me the same will happen to these one's as well, Going to carry on using my rider 400, if that goes the same as the older version, then I will think about replacing with a newer model specific for our mounts, at the moment I am using the adjustable windscreen on my 2021 F750gs, and using the ram mount on the bars.
I also use mapsme app on my phone. It’s mounted on a ram mount. New video soon on this topic.
So, who makes your GPS bracket?

Hi, what bracket system did you use please
Hi Mark and thanks for watching. I bought these brackets from Aliexpress. There are many out there and different price range. My return on this investment was well worth it. Do some research first. I've been told may not work with adjustable windshield brackets. Ours are fixed.
will this fit a 2021 f750gs?
Yes I installed it my F850GS and my wife’s F750GS. Both 2019.
The 2021 to my knowledge is same as 2019 and 2020
That is not an improvement. Anything that blocks your view of the road is not advisable IMO. Why don't you stick it hanging off you helmet visor 😂
