The fact that Sega started making Dreamcasts as a promo item for companies that really had little to do with gaming in general just shows how screwed Sega was in the console market at that time. No wonder the Dreamcast was their last one. I know there's a lot of other reasons for Segas demise, but at the same time damn. :/
If there’s one thing I’ve taken away from all these videos is that if you want a cool console variation of a non Microsoft console you have to live in Japan.
Limp Bizkit had some sort of promotion with Sega and there was an ad for the online service that had Fred Durst and was like "If you ever get your ass kicked, it was me on the other end of the line." So I suppose that can be official enough.
9:22 This era of mobile gaming is actually very interesting. You could even earn a Dreamcast from it at the time but right now it is the abandonedest of the abandonware. Nobody cared for some reason. Same with a lot of 70's and early 80's consoles that never left Europe.
I think the issue with them is they're basically a genre defined by shovelware. No one at the time thought they were of much value, they were basically the precursor to smartphone app games before they became more microtransaction than game, basically just small little derivative minigames you could play to pass the time on a commute. Some have been saved, I remember in a rebeltaxi video he showed some dexter's lab themed mobile games from that era, but most probably aren't worth preserving.
Alot of Sega's old websites and servers still work to this day. Sega is one of the very few companies that doesn't turn off it's old servers. But idk about old third party stuff. And mobile gaming wasn't as big as it should be. They didn't wanna put a whole lot of effort in solo gaming cause back then consoles were made to bring families together.
That last Dreamcast looks like a case swap. During the last year of the Dreamcasts life there were alternate cases available in several colors. I believe there might still be a few floating around. The idea was you would take your internals, swap them into the new case, and if you wanted too add LEDs or stickers for a custom look.
see through cases are really common now because someone got their hands on the original console molds and now makes re-production shells. I replaced my yellowing beige shell with a see through clear case and it looks really nice now.
The RX-78 Dreamcast is meant to be a reference to Mobile Suit Gundam. To be specific, the OG RX-78-2 that the main character pilots. But, I can see where you thought it resembled Sonic.
You can buy translucent replacement shells now for around $70-120. They even make replicas of the Resident Evil versions. I've bought a few, they are high quality and worth the money.
i was just thinking about how a lot of these variations being sold are probably just replicas. ebay is plagued with counterfeits when it comes to highly collectible consoles and games

Being a Dreamcast fanatic at the time (still am really) I found this to be the highlight of the evening seeing as how the only group I liked was Godsmack. Anyway, word on the street was that Limp Bizkit had a habit of putting on poor performances and walking off. Which I thought it was people making stuff up. Now I'm nearly 40. Getting old is fun.
in 1999 the console really was ahead of it's time. What killed it was the Mil-CD exploit making the games super easy to pirate and the fact a lot of the general public was holding off and buying the PS2 because it had integrated DVD playback and back then DVD's were HUGE!

I used to harass my parents and grandparents to go shopping at Toys R Us just so that I could play on the Dreamcast display they had there. They had four consoles set up in a circle around a table with big CRT's hanging from the ceiling for each console and sometimes they even had a four-player game with all the consoles connected together. Judging by the name and colors, the RX-78 Dreamcast has to be based off the RX-78-2 Gundam aka the original iconic Gundam.
This is correct
I came here to say this 😂
The iconic colors aren't as heavy on the blue though. Looks more like Mk-II in Titans' color scheme, especially with how dark the blue is.
I'm sure they didn't know or probably got tired about research.
