The "toilet" water dispenser isn't for cleaning brushes! I have one and I love it... it is for watercolor painting, because you constantly need clean water to wet your paper and your paint, and the water gets contaminated sooo fast. This way, you don't have to go to the sink every 5 minutes and refresh your water, just "flush" and voila, clean water! I keep one of the "bucket" brush cleaners next to the "flush" fresh water, and clean in one, add water to paint with the other.
@@SarahRenaeClarkI have a similar "toilet" type cleaner. The cleaning area is much larger, it holds a lot more water, and I use it for acrylics. It's GREAT! The brand is Masterson. Your comment about water color makes a LOT of sense!!
I was going to comment this also. I have one from TEMU of all places that has been a lifechanger for me. It's amazing for watercolor, but I absolutely wouldn't use it for other paints (maybe gouache).
When you showed the cube with colours, my first thought was: “That will be a fantastic fidget toy for my son with autism!” He completely relaxes when he can look at those colours. 🥰 The cube without the colours I do have at home, but… with a 3D photo from my son IN the cube. If I put the cube on a little light his picture lights up. ☺️
I’d love to see this, too! BTW, a good reference for advanced gel plate techniques is Yeates Makes (channel here on YT). Thanks for all the great videos and happy holidays.
I remember one of my high school art teachers did a cheep easy diy "gel pad" by making clear gelatin but used the good stuff it lasted us a little over a week our class was45mins long and she would just pop it in n out of the fridge every class loved it😊
I've had better luck using a foam brush to apply the watercolor grounds to avoid the streaks! (It'd likely work just as well for the gesso) It also helps to get the thinnest possible coat on the paper, and it still protects the paper from soaking alcohol markers.
I *adore* watercolour grounds, and agree that foam brushes do make it go on more smoothly. Sometimes, I like having some texture though. I've used it on wood and canvas, and have achieved some fun effects with my watercolours, and other watersoluable media.
@@ceilinh6004 (Only just saw this comment had replies lol) The foam brush does still leave some texture, it's rough to the touch but has less streaks than with a brush!
I haven't seen the curve ruler since university. We used it in math or mechanics in the first semesters, when it was necessary to draw a curve of a function by hand.
The wet palette looks awesome and is going on my Christmas wish list. I love my tombow fine detail eraser that you bought me and is a must have in my sketching kit.
I swear by the Tombow fine detail eraser! They also make a colored pencil blending pen or pencil. I don’t know I have an opened the package yet, maybe you could try that next time. The wet Pallette dish would be so helpful for going back to art uni! Honestly, I feel like I’m breaking the bank with all these different art classes. It’s really helpful that you try out the items for us. Lol.
In my experience, gesso is more for using on paper that shouldn't get so wet (like a 99¢ journal), while the watercolor ground is for surfaces that aren't really designed for watercolor (like a traditional canvas or block of wood). Thanks for all the info!
The second brush cleaner is best used for miniature painting brushes. With the watercolour ground, sand it between two layers, and then sand with ultra fine sandpaper, and it will work amazingly well.
The wet/dry palette is going on my wishlist. Also that proportion tool is very cool I would need that. I struggle with proportions. The whiteboard tape would come in handy and that color cube would fascinate me for hours! Thanks for doing all this.
The paint brush rinser (toilet style brush cleaner) was originally produced by “Green Stuff World” if I’m not mistaken. Green Stuff World is a miniature or hobby supply company, so the brushes miniature artists use are often much, much smaller than regular art brushes (like between size 5/0 and size 2 round). The rinser tends to work better for those smaller brushes, definitely not ideal for large artist brushes. I would have loved to see what you thought about the paint puck style brush cleaners, they look great! This was a fun and informative video, loved some of the supplies!
Also, this Rinser from the Green Stuff World has another purpose! More then just cleaning the brush, it's also providing new fresh water, untainted by former rinses, for your brush.
I have a larger version to the toilet flush brush cleaner and I love it. I am a watercolor artist and love the fact that it always provides clean water so my watercolors don't get muddy.
The second brush cleaner, the one in the middle, would be better used as a water source during painting. When the paint water gets dirty you always have a fresh supply.
I bought the forever pencil and I adore it. It's fantastic for light sketches and so easy to remove. Coloured tip is awesome if you make your lineart in colour. These are NOT coloured pencils. The proportional divider is extremely helpful if you know how to use it. RUclips's got you covered, professionals have videos about them.
I love how excited you get about art supplies. I am the same. Thanks for saving me money by making this video. I can art supply vicariously through you.
A tipp for a cheap brush cleaning device: get one of these small round silicone suction cup makeup brush / face cleaning pads from the beauty store and stick this at the bottom of your glass jar, fill up with water, boom cheap alternative for all these devices.
What I liked best about this video was the range of items you looked at. Artists and crafters of all kinds could find something useful here. Eclectic is quirky and fun.
The “toilet” brush cleaner is exceptional for cleaning the brushes used for painting minis (like Warhammer models etc). The big brushes you used, not so much 😊
6:27 is actually used more for pattern making in sewing and fashion design than anything else and it is super useful for pattern manipulation (kind of a different kind of art)
The "forever pencil" claim reminds me of some pens my sister and I were fooled into buying about 13 years ago. Our local bookstore was selling them (and I continued to see them for years but can't find them now) for way too much for a single ballpoint pen but not so much that we weren't willing to buy 2 each along with our books. It was called something along the lines of "Thousand Year Pen" and if you read the fine print on the card it was attached to it said something about making a single 1-mile line every day for some impressive number of years that wasn't nearly as high as 1,000 years. I used mine for class and ran out of ink in the first one in 2 months.
For keepeng my acrylic wet, i use small box. Inside i put small sponge for washing, or I cut it even smaller, around I put something, whats in my language called 'separating paper', it's used with textil dippers, and wet it. When i know, i will not use it few days, i put it on freezer. It's amazing, if you mix specific tones of colours, you can just keep it and don't need be affraid, you will not fit them exactly next time. 🙂 And als, as I am painting from home, with kids, if i leave it for a while, i come back to perfectly usable colours. Even in summer. 😄
Omg so excited for that curve maker thing! I’m a quilling artist, and sometimes I have to cut out curved edges for some of the elements of my pieces, and I’m no good at free handing the curves, I usually just curve the paper, glue, cut (while the strips come off), and then reglue it later. This will save me so much time!
That wet palette has been my default palette for a long time now. I’ve left acrylic paint in it for MONTHS and it’s still wet. Literally my best purchase. 10/10.
for the green toilet brush cleaner thing, I feel like you would never have that much paint left on your brush when you are actually painting, especially if you are using watercolors or even acrylics so it might be more useful when you are actually painting as apposed to cleaning your brushes after
True, can see whats shes saying with the lil cleaning well though… maybe a lil deeper and wider? Feels like you’d have to be aware each time to not swish it too much or water would be everywhere… def feels more novelty… 🤔
Pretty sure it's not for cleaning your brush. I think it's for keeping your water for watercolors clean. Once it gets contaminated, you can just flush out the dirty water.
Love the idea of the wet dry pallet but concerned about mildew in my current climate. Also I wish I knew more about the gel plate. I’ve seen the gel plate used on card making videos but I am curious if it has more uses
There's one artist on youtube that uses his peices also for junk journaling and mini album patterns. Ceri Griffiths is his name and my mom got into it because of him. Though as a Print Maker I kinda want to get that eventually for Monoprints (Prints that there is only one of) because it's hard to work around printing without a press unless it's relief and screenprinting. A Gel Plate looks like a perfect solution for more options for Print Making overall.
Clove oil helps with watercolor, wonder if it would help deter mold in acrylic? In my scene shop, I use a light dusting of Lysol in my gallon cans of artist acrylic and commercial latex paints every time they are opened to reduce mold and mildew growth. Our cans can sit for years before completely used up. Lysol does not harm those types of paint. But clove oil would smell better.
The wet palette is technically for keeping acrylics from drying out during a painting session, not for paint storage. It does make good paint storage sometimes, but it doesn’t always work the same with every kind of paint. Just kinda a buyer beware. 😊
Duralar does have a line that takes colored pencil-it is matte finish but once the color is down you can definitely see it and I have used it the way you showed to test but also to do the picture. You can also use Grafix drafting film the same way and it takes many more layers and looks incredible.
That was a fun video! The proportional divider is one of my favourite drawing tools! I laughed so hard when you tried to use it for circles! I'm glad you figured it out! I have the "toilet" style brush cleaner and love it. I hate having any paint in my water, so this solves that problem. I mostly use it for watercolour though. I used it for acrylic once and it was fine, but I think I had less paint on my brush. The palette that kept the paint wet looked really useful!
I love my brush cleaner. It’s the “All in One Cup” by paint puck. It has silicone nubbs on the bottom to clean the bristles, and it also has silicone alcoves of various sizes to store your brushes upside down while they dry. It even has a drip tray to keep the table clean. ❤
The middle brush cleaner I see used with watercolor and you want to quickly change your colors. Acrylic paint I don't see it working well. Loved finding this video as I found so much on here I need/want. 😆
Hi Sarah! I'm oldschool, and personally I prefer a longer form video. Some of these items I truly had not seen before, so great job unearthing these tools!
Wow. The proportion divider is so useful ! The wet palette is amazing too. And I learned today that the English word for compass has two meanings. In German Kompass only refers to the device to tell you where north is. The thing to draw circles we call Zirkel. But the word circle translates to Kreis. Not confusing at all 😅
3:00 I remember seeing Adam Savage review this. I think it's more for people who love really well crafted tools and machinists. 6:55 I did actually buy that for architectural drafting. It's a pain to use and not worth it. It got very tiny curves in it and I couldn't straighten them out. Just get a set of French curves. 10:45 Oh yeah, I got a similar one from Jazza's minis art box from a few years back. Apparently used a LOT with minis and I kinda want to grab mine again and use it for this current project
I've had my gelli plate awhile now and its become my favourite tool to use (mixed media aficionado here)... there are some great RUclipsrs you can learn from and i highly recommend getting one 💜
Sarah you need to try the paint puck. I have the ultimate rise cup it cleans your brushes and even has clippy things to hold your brush upside down. now I need a wet pallet, i had been thinking about one but you have sold me on one.
That wet pallette is great for an intricate paint by number. When you use alot of the same colour but want to stretch or not waste paint. I found myself making homemade versions of that pallette when I was painting alot of paint by numbers.
I use the water dispenser (you called it the toilet which is hilarious) for my cat! She’s old and has diabetes and gets very thirsty. This dispenses water as she drinks and I can measure and see how much she’s drinking. Also she’s a messy eater so the button is good for clearing away any water with bits in it 🤣🐈⬛🖤🎨🖌️🏴
I am really interested in the Dura Lar clear paper. When painting mandalas I am always using photo copies or mylar to try out different ideas. This would work great.
The proportional divider tool and the bendable arch tool were definitely my favorites! I've ordered both and am happily looking forward to trying them out. I need help with proportions and perspective when drawing! Thanks for the helpful and fun video 🙂
5:08 that's proportional dividers or calipers. You set the pivot point to set the scale, then you can open one end to measure your reference, and a scaled version will show on the side opposite the measuring side.
These supplies are interesting to say the least, but I'm really excited about the storage box for keeping your paints from drying out. I've never seen it before. I've thought about buying a gel plate, but they always seem a bit pricey. I would love to see you use it more before I buy one of my own. Thanks for the fun!!
We used the square paint water bucket things as a kid, I miss having one. I can see the toilet water type device as both a novelty and saving having to get up as carisathomas metioned. I love your videos!
Hullo Sarah, I have found a great brush cleaning solution. It is The Paint Puck! You can buy an assortment of pucks for your different cups and different kinds of paints! The smaller pucks will swell if put in a solvent or turpentine for cleaning your oil paint brushes. They also sell the Paint Puck Cup a silicone top and bottom with a clear tube connecting them. They have just created a new portable collapsible puck cup! I love how much easier it is to clean ALL of my brushes using my paint pucks! I did just buy some rubber/silicone stamps for swatching out my watercolor paints and I have to give them a go! Now Liz Chaderton has recipes for watercolor grounds as well as soft pastel grounds too, they are truly amazing! I am always looking for a less expensive way to create my premium surfaces. Thank you for sharing these ideas and methods with us. I am looking forward to seeing your next video! See ya then!
I've been using the paint puck cup for the past couple years and I absolutely LOVE it. I use the small pucks for my detail and makeup brushes. Definitely worth the investment!
Thank you for this recommendation! I wish I had seen the paint puck before doing this video 😏 The watercolor ground recipes sound like something fun to explore too! I’ll check it out
My first acrylic paint teacher had plastic scrubbers glued to the bottom of her water jars. I've since been using the mesh used to bag fruit added to my water jars. It gives the bush something to scrub the paint off and has the added benefit of keeping your brushes from getting warped when you leave them in the water too long.
What a fun video! None of these unusual art supplies are anything I'd use, but I really enjoyed your presenting them and showing how they work. You've got a very engaging and fun personality. 10/10!
I have one of those "forever pencils", a very short one, attached to my keychain, so that I always have something to write with; but I wouldn't want to use it for art. That CMK cube is gorgeous, definitely on my wish list.
Makers Cabinet have some amazing products, yes they are expansive but they are hand-crafted brass art tools, Thier Iris is awesome, think they also sell a realy cool pencil sharpener.
That gel plate looks so fun, I have no idea what I would use it for but now I kinda want one 😂😂. The wet palette definitely seems useful!! And the little avocado erasers we’re just cute. 😊
Honestly I wouldn't bother. I couldn't get the wretched thing to work properly at all. There are better ways of drawing mandalas. I've drawn some great ones on my iPad with Procreate, for instance, and there are lots of RUclips videos on how to draw them by hand.
The forever pencils do run out, but they last a good while, and you can get replacement points fairly cheaply. I've had one for a few months, use it quite a lot, and haven't replaced the point yet. I will say, it makes fairly light marks. I use it for scribbling notes and quick sketches, not for making a finished piece. It's a handy one to keep in my pocket, since I never need to bother with finding a sharpener.

Love the cube. Thank you for your videos. You make my days better.
I use the flexible curve for (fashion) pattern making. I'm on my second one! The Gelli Plate is great when used with fabric paint on fabrics
The mirror paint looks like it would be cool to play with and the stay wet palette would come in handy for gouache! Nice video. I enjoyed watching.
I vote YES on the mixed media idea for a video 😍
I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Almost can't wait for the next upload
This was so much fun...I enjoyed every second of this video!!
We used the square paint water bucket things as a kid, I miss having one. I can see the toilet water type device as both a novelty and saving having to get up as carisathomas metioned. I love your videos!
Oh yes, mixed media video for sure. So much fun!
that wet palette looks wonderful ❤❤❤
I wish I had seen the paint puck before doing this video 😏
The watercolor ground recipes sound like something fun to explore too! I’ll check it out
Great video. I liked the Gel Plate and mixed media information and would like to see you work in that media more.
More to come!
Thank you for sharing this Amazing video 😀and keep hard work 🥰
Liked the white tape, and mirror paint.
My first acrylic paint teacher had plastic scrubbers glued to the bottom of her water jars. I've since been using the mesh used to bag fruit added to my water jars. It gives the bush something to scrub the paint off and has the added benefit of keeping your brushes from getting
warped when you leave them in the water too long.
Really interesting bundle of products. Thanks for testing them out.
Great honest detailed review. Thank you!
I think the flexible curve tool could come in handy when drawing a same pattern multiple times or tracing a shape to copy...
What a fun video! None of these unusual art supplies are anything I'd use, but I really enjoyed your presenting them and showing how they work. You've got a very engaging and fun personality. 10/10!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Sarah i love this video, you're my favourite artist, KEEP UP THE AMAZING WORK😄😁
Thank you so much 😀
This was a blast, saw some cool stuff thanks. 😊
I’d LOVE to see some mixed media videos! I ❤️ all things art!
I have one of those "forever pencils", a very short one, attached to my keychain, so that I always have something to write with; but I wouldn't want to use it for art. That CMK cube is gorgeous, definitely on my wish list.
The saf-t compass and proprtion tools look cool.
This was really cool I truly enjoyed it. Tyfs😎👍
Makers Cabinet have some amazing products, yes they are expansive but they are hand-crafted brass art tools, Thier Iris is awesome, think they also sell a realy cool pencil sharpener.
This was good fun and some of those are really interesting. I enjoyed it!
That gel plate looks so fun, I have no idea what I would use it for but now I kinda want one 😂😂. The wet palette definitely seems useful!! And the little avocado erasers we’re just cute. 😊
3:40 in, where do I get the Mandala maker thingy ?
Honestly I wouldn't bother. I couldn't get the wretched thing to work properly at all. There are better ways of drawing mandalas. I've drawn some great ones on my iPad with Procreate, for instance, and there are lots of RUclips videos on how to draw them by hand.
Now this was a very fun video, I think I find the brush bath the most useful (for me). The mirror paint looks awesome, that goes on my wishlist.
The wet dry paint palette looks awesome
Not me thinking you were gonna draw a circle with a chunk of wood before you opened that box
LOVE this all at once approach! More please!
Love to see you dabble more with the gel plate
Loved this video! Added several items to my Amazon wish list.
Super enjoyed, thank you
The forever pencils do run out, but they last a good while, and you can get replacement points fairly cheaply.
