I bought an Obed gravel bike at the peak of the pandemic (2020). The order process was straightforward and customer service was great. I really like the bicycle. It's light but sturdy. It's comfortable on unpaved roads and rail trails, and quick on the paved roads. My bike has a shimano 2x10 GRX "gravel" drivetrain which is nice for riding here in NH. It has short enough low gears for the steep hills around here and it shifts smoothly and reliably. The wider tires and carbon frame make for a very comfortable ride!
My bike was ordered 4/28 and promised 8 weeks and delivered 6/25 at 8 weeks and 2 days. No complaints here. I was notified when it went to build and all my questions were answered along the way
by coincidence, I bought the same bike at almost the same time: Obed Boundary GRX 600 2x, arrived July 2021. I'm in northern California. I love the bike, but have had a lot of trouble tuning: both front and rear derailleurs were not set properly, had to replace a bent brake rotor, the stem bolts corroded almost immediately and had to be replaced, and I had many issues with the tubeless setup not holding air, to the point where I had to retape the front wheel and I've gone through 16oz of sealant, mucking around trying to get the tubeless system to work. Overall I love the bike but if you're not a bike mechanic yourself I would suggest taking it to one for a tune-up as soon as the bike arrives.
The review was quite helpful,. I just watched it for a second time. I bought an obed 2 months ago and having watched your video prior to buying, I stayed in contact with them regularly to make sure I knew what was going on with the build. For me, they delivered on time. They also upgraded me to the same delivery service which was completely seamless - like the bike shop came to me. I love the bike and have done several long rides on it. Thx for the great review.
Very informative video. Only recently heard of the OBED brand. Their website model looks appealing too. Love the musical background you've included. Good job!
Yep, I ordered mine in March and was told it would arrive in May. Still waiting as of 6/15. All manufacturers are having this problem, mostly because Shimano is having trouble keeping up with demand... remember, during COVID, bikes were the new toilet paper. Some manufacturers are into 2022 to get a bike, some have switched to SRAM to shorten delays, and as we see, Obed is now offereing a Campagnolo set, although, for the money, I'd go Di2 and deal with the wait before going with Campagnolo in hopes it arrives sooner.
Man, that's such a bummer. But you're absolutely right - it's good to remind ourselves to have a little extra patience and compassion due to everything going on with the supply chain right now. And I was stoked to see Obed start offering the Campagnolo groupset! I agree, I would've personally still waited, but it's awesome to give people options if they want to get their bike as quickly as possible.
Thank you for the balanced review! I've been looking at the Obed for awhile now so appreciate your candor and honesty. Amazing that they sent you a 2x when you ordered a 1x! I was wondering about the 1x from a rider standpoint. Also, what if it flat out didn't fit? Would they refund your purchase price? Supply chain issues are definitely a bummer! Your comments about communication and customer service were appreciated! Thanks again and happy riding!
Sister, I’m right there with you, regarding your outlook on preferring “gravel riding” versus “crazy mountain biking”. Nothing against hard core mountain bike riding….hell, I admire those men and women who do it! But, I’m a 68 year old male….retired Navy Officer and a retired Federal Law Enforcement Officer. In those two careers, I’ve had more than my share of “crazy crap”. In fact, I now deal with a back injury from an old Navy aircraft accident….and my speed when running and swimming, isn’t what it used to be. While I still run, backpack, kayak, bikepack, hike, golf….my “crazy crap” days are done. Long distance bikepacking/off road touring to isolated fly fishing spots….well, that’s as crazy as I’ll ride. My primary off road ride is a Chumba Stella ti…..but I’m thinking that a drop bar gravel ride might be better. Yours was an outstanding video…..your online communication skills are excellent. Be well, always be safe…And wishing you many “smiles with the miles”!
I got my Boundary last August and have had it on several bike packing trips. Just did the 520 mile Trans Virginia. It has performed flawlessly, has the ideal blend of tire clearance, geometry, and components. All at an attractive price. Obed is a brand of American Bicycle Group who also makes Litespeed and QR triathlon gear. Most of the bikes they make are named after rivers and forest in the east Tennessee area where they are headquartered.
How is the comfortability on this bike? I’ll be looking to get a new gravel bike and that is one of the top priorities on my list to put a lot more miles down. Thanks for the great review!
Ordered my Obed Baseline with the GRX Di2 2x groupset April. I've been in contact with Bryanna and she has been great. I too received the upgraded delivery but since I live in North Carolina I'm considering a trip to Chattanooga, TN to tour the facility and test ride my new bike. Hopefully, it will arrive at the end of June. Being able to customize and still afford the bike was a big plus. I chose Obed as my direct to consumer bike over Ribble and Canyon.
Awesome! That looks like such a rad bike! We'd love to hear what you think of it when it arrives. We were also originally looking to purchase from Canyon but ultimately went with Obed because the lead time was so much faster. Like you said, it's pretty awesome to be able to fully customize your bike, especially at that price, so we're still very happy with our decision! And that would be awesome to get a tour of the facility - not a bad plan at all :)
I ended up ordering a Seclud from OBED about 6 weeks ago- the communication has been kind of scattered- I think they are overwhelmed right now. They are saying the bike should ship this week which would fall within the 4-6 weeks that they estimate online. That being said, I had to remind them that I still have to pay for half of the bike, lol, I emailed them about the second payments few weeks ago and that I was ready to make that second payment but they never responded to that email among others. That being said, they are extremely responsive via chat and you are definitely talking to a human and not a bot. How did they set up the delivery with you? Did the third party shipping company contact you directly to set up a delivery time? We did a factory tour 2 weeks ago when we visited Chattanooga and they said that they have been hand delivering all of their domestic bikes in 2021 to minimize potential damage. Great facility in Chattanooga, Sean gave us an awesome tour. Looking forward to getting my bike - I'll update this post on how the rest of the process goes- It is highly likely we will do a review video too-
Mine arrives Thursday!! Can’t wait. However your experience with communication and delivery and mine are the same. Ordered in February, Promised end of March, the end of April finally arriving mid June. The really need to learn the adage under promise and over deliver.
Sorry to hear you've had to deal with delays as well. Such a bummer. Hopefully it will all be worth it when you're out riding your brand new gravel beast this weekend! We're excited for you!
There's a few trails up here in Ojai that aren't that intense . They're nice too and one is by some water..One is in Meiners Oaks the other being Shelf Road
I own one of these and it's the most troublesome bike I've ever owned. Highly recommend going with a different brand. I bought my bike when they were going by a different name. I think Obed is their third name. Given my experience I'm not surprised.
Great overall review, and thanks for the review. Pros and Cons are always welcome from someone who suffered them. It'd be great you add your review about the bike riding experience, how do you like your bike or not, besides your purchasing experience
I'm 5'5 - looking at the XS too. Thank you for this review! There is nothing out there hardly on this bike!!! With the XS frame and the 700c wheels - do you have toe overlap issues??
I do have some toe overlap issues every once in awhile, but I'm kind of used to that with riding such small frames. Smaller wheels would help, but it's not enough of an issue for me to change them. And I know what you mean, I searched everywhere for more info on this bike before ordering but couldn't really find anything, which is why we made this video :) Hope it was helpful for you!
What color is that? is that military green/ pine on their site also is that matte because it doesn't say matte on site? such an amazing color. The whole minimal lighting and everything makes this video such bliss to watch. Awesome channel hope to see more adventures. subbed 😎🍻
Thanks Onkar! Yes this is the pine and it doesn't say on the web site but it comes in this awesome matte finish. We have more adventures planned so stay tuned.
I know this is an older video but maybe someone looking for a gravel bike on the small side (or larger than average) might find my long comment helpful (I have learned a lot over 20+ years buying my own bikes being outside the normal fit....I am taller than average and shopping for my 5'5" wife being shorter than average was the exact same deal but in reverse.) . The OBED boundary is an open mold frame sold under MANY MANY MNY different names (its a Carbonda 696 and offered in 6 sizes 49,52,54,56,58, and 61 and runs about 650US frame and fork TYD) Not picking on Obed, many bike "brands" do not want to stock the full range and purchase the middle easy to sell average sizes and stretch the suggested height range scales they post (they lie) Im 6'3" and I need a higher stack height to keep my saddle from towering over my bars like a pro road racer and a longer reach... the 61 I own just makes for a good fit could go a tick higher in stack being its more of a rougher going/big tire/bike packing style bike) BUT OBED lists the an XL going up to 6'5... thats ludicrous. Same with the so called "XS" they list the 52 as there "XS" and its just not my wife at 5'5" would be showing very little seat post making for a very non complaint ride and as mentioned in the video really tight standover PLUS a bike that small with 38c or above really should be 650b not 700c (29) toe overlap and geo going that small just down work with suck big wheels. I feel the frame prices OBED lists are pretty outrageous BUT the total bike prices are actually really good... not much more than what I spent building my own and actually cheaper if I had to buy some of the more pricey tools for this build. *thats not even factoring in the warranty and/or customer service you would get going with a "brand". I absolutely LOVE this bike, got mine in 2019 and have well over 5000 miles+ on it (2200+ loaded on trips) but if I had purchased an OBED "XL" it would have been a literal pain the neck and been gathering dust in the garage and eventually sold. This comment could be a page long if I went into fitting, do research make sure you get the right size. DO NOT go by any brands suggested size especially if you are shorter or taller than the "average" honestly even if you are "average" your dimensions could move you up or down a size. Bike brands WILL suggest what they have 100%, I have XL bikes listed up to 6'7" LOL
Lol, the components weren't as advertised, sizing charts misleading, and delivery times overpromised. Then you had to fit it with additional components. Welcome to working at Bike Shop 3.0! In consumer direct model, the consumer literally handles all the headaches that were previously mitigated by bike shop staff. It's no doubt going to usher in a lot of smaller brands like this. Bike looks good, though. Looks like a good value for money. Thanks for sharing, first I've heard of this brand.
So true Carl. We are huge fans of supporting your local bike shop for sure. Takes away a lot of the headaches we had to deal with. Unfortunately with all the current bike shortages most local bike shops around us have so few bikes that it forced us to look into direct to consumer.
Tips for anyone wanting to buy Obed. Measure your inseam. Measure you’re exact height. Measure your arm length from end of shoulder bone to wrist. Send these measurements to Obed and ask for the best fit for those measurements.
Same exact dimensions as the Framed Basswood which implies this is a stock frame purchased from a manufacturer. Doesn't mean it's bad, but it isn't "special". It's dimensions imply something closer to a road bike... doesn't have much slack in comparison to today's longer, slacker gravel bikes.
It's too bad their (Obed) bikes run so large. I am a shorter guy (5'5") and have a SOH of 29" and one look at Obed's geometry chart, an XS has a standover of 29.88", meaning no bike will fit me even though the reach and stack of an XS are perfectly fine. Obed's prices also seem really solid too, a carbon Boundary GRX 600 at $2700 is a fairly good deal. This is what you would pay for a Revolt Advanced 2 ($2650), however, a Giant XS or even S would fit me. Also, it's too bad since I really dig the Borough Grid since it's a carbon-fiber hybrid/gravel flat bar mchine
This isn’t a bike review; it is a review of Obed’s customer service during a time of unprecedented demand and shortages. It would have been nice to learn how the bike actually performed.
It performs extremely poorly. Paint job is the worst I've ever experienced on a bike. Derailleur hanger has a fatal flaw design where two ends butt together rather than one fitting inside the other like every other bike with a thru axle I own. Spend your money somewhere else.
Totally agree! We were able to make it work for my height by customizing some parts, but I just don't see how someone 5'1" could ever really fit well on it.
I bought an Obed gravel bike at the peak of the pandemic (2020). The order process was straightforward and customer service was great. I really like the bicycle. It's light but sturdy. Bike mechanic or not, you're not fixing the flaking paint or the crap design derailleur hanger

i also got my bike delivered by Augie. what an awesome experience that was. Enjoy your bike!!
Just placed an order for two bikes from Obed. An XS 800 GRX for my wife and a large 800GRX Di2 for me. Can't wait for delivery in 6-8 weeks.

Spend your money on some other bike. There are good brands out there, this is NOT one of them.
FYI Obed is part of the American Bicycle Group. They are the folks that make Litespeed and Quintaroo. This is their newer sister company.
When you say you had to do a custom seat post and other parts - Where those customized after you got the bike or during the order process with OBED?
We customized those parts ourselves after we got the bike.
