Nilima Sheikh | Studio | Frieze Masters 2024

For Nilima Sheikh, ’a studio is a place where you go to regenerate yourself. It is a place of peace, sukoon in Hindi.’ Part of her house in Baroda, India, Sheikh’s studio is somewhere she ‘needs to be at least for some part of every day.’
When Sheikh embarks on a series of paintings, she pins up reproductions of other paintings, drawing inspiration from their structure, story, tonality or figuration. Working with natural pigments on layered handmade paper, Sheikh’s delicate landscapes portray the Kashmir region past and present, interweaving traditional oral and visual narratives with contemporary accounts of racial and gender abuse.
Nilima Sheikh is presented by Chemould Prescott Road as part of the ’Studio’ section at Frieze Masters 2024. The section sees ten immersive presentations - focusing on artists’ place of making, reflecting the idea of the past informing the present moment of creation.
