  • We are Alex and Jess from @tents.and.timber and this is our trip log video of our spring canoe trip to Algonquin Provincial Park.
This is Day 3 of our backcountry canoe trip in Algonquin Provincial Park. We launched our canoe from Cache Lake 2 days ago and have been hanging out on Pardee Lake for 2 nights now. The weather has been absolutely stunning for very early May with temperatures soaring to the 30 degree Celsius range.
On this particular morning the lake was exceptionally flat, which made it difficult to want to pack up and leave our campsite. Luckily we did not have far to travel today, so we took our time getting up and enjoyed breakfast, served with hot chocolate as we sat down by the lake, taking in the calmness of the lake and enjoying the early spring bird songs.
After packing down camp, we slid into our Swift canoe and headed to the first portage that would take us back into Harness Lake. There is a beautiful bridge along this portage that takes you over a waterfall that eventually flows into Harness Lake. We got the fishing rods out once we got to Harness Lake and trolled around the lake with our lines out behind us.
As you will see in the video, Jess hooked her very first lake trout as we paddled around. This was one of the goals of our trip, so we were beyond excited to finally catch an Algonquin lake trout. The second portage of the day was a little bit longer than the first, but just as easy. Both were relatively flat and not very technical at all. This portage took us to a creek where we set our canoe into the water and paddled our way into Head Lake. There were 2 beaver dams along the way. The first one was easily passed over top of, but the second one we had to get out of the canoe and slide the canoe over top of the beaver dam.
Head Lake would be our home for the night, so we paddled around to find a campsite. After setting up our tent we decided to go for a swim in the icy cold spring lake. This was followed by a hot dinner where we watched a lightning storm pass by us and start a forest fire on the opposite shore of the lake. Before we could even see the smoke a helicopter quickly appeared and began circling the fire not far from our site. We watched on as we ate our dinner, wondering if we should be concerned by this.
With the storm past, we jumped into the canoe to go check out a waterfall that was not far from our site and try some more fishing. It turned out to be a gorgeous evening, with some interesting cloud cover as we took in all the we could of our last night. We finished off the day with a campfire before crawling into our tent for the night.

Fishing should be great during a heat wave in the spring . Think the lakes you're on are a tad over fished .Congrats to Jess on her first laker

These lakes are close to the highway, so you may be right in that they are over fished. We sometimes wish we could have experienced these lakes 100 years ago. Thanks

@@Tents.and.Timber Even in my time fishing the park , have seen fishing decline . Ralph Bice told me of fish caught in one yr around WWl in one small lake . It was hard to believe .

@@alexs3447 We really enjoyed his book, and we believe he worried about declining fish populations in his book. Would have been great to meet him in real life to hear all his stories.

@@Tents.and.Timber I think i read Ralph's book but don't think he mentions this small lake. He was a bit of a curmudgeon .And he rented out the worst canoes you can imagine.

That was scary to see the smoke from the campsite.
No fish on the pan? Those tortillas would have been on another level with trout in it. 😋
Hopefully in the next one video I see them on the plate.
    Thanks for sharing.

No fish in the pan on this trip, we wanted to release our first caught trout, but we agree some fish tacos 🌮 would definitely be delicious. We had never encountered a forest fire before, so in the beginning it had us a little uneasy
