Real question, how you do you get to the studio?? Do you have to go to art college? What about high school art classes (do those matter?)? I wanna get into the industry but I have no idea where to even start. How do you get hired by the studio...

Be on the hunt for job listings from certain studios! While connections help, ambition and determination are just as much of a useful asset, even if things don’t get moving right away. Consistently posting art, updating portfolios, in a way you gotta be ready to make your own audition!

    • @NatYourAverageNerd
      @NatYourAverageNerd 5 лет назад +33

Here is my simplified backstory as an artist wanting to break into the animation industry: I started drawing at an early age (and not everybody does this), got into the Visual Arts program at a high school designed specifically for artists (OCSHA/OCSA), and got my AA degree in community college to save money on tuition. While in community college (for four years), I was working part-time at Starbucks, and after I graduated, I applied for a job as a barista at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, CA. I have lived in CA for most of my life, so when I got the job and needed to move out to the LA-area, it wasn't as difficult for me as someone who would be moving from out-of-state.
As soon as I started working at WB, I looked for nearby art schools to continue my education, and I wound up in the LA Film School. It's great if you want to get your degree in three years instead of four, but you need to be hardcore focused on your studies because every month is a new class -- and the focus is heavy on gaming and 3D animation. I'm a traditional artist wanting to animate traditionally, so this school was not for me, and after a year and a half's time, I dropped out. I thought I was screwed for a while, but in less than a month afterwards, I wound up being accepted into the Don Bluth University (an online course taught by former Disney animator Don Bluth). I'm currently still in this course because he's teaching me everything I wanted to learn since I was little: the hand-drawn and traditional animation pipeline that he once learned at Walt Disney Studios.
To make a long story short, there's no one-way into the animation industry. Yes, it helps to have a BSA, BFA, or MFA degree from an art school, but nothing can teach you how to be creative. Nothing can teach you how to make art the speaks from your soul and personal experiences; art schools and mentors can teach you the mechanics of drawing so that you have the SKILL, but nobody can teach you the TALENT of being an artist. It comes from within, so if you have the motivation, the creativity, and the persistence to see yourself through the tough spots in life on your way into the industry, you will find your own way in. Nobody follows the exact same path as their idols; that's what makes this industry both maddening and worthwhile.
      Best of luck to you!

They are Cloudworld (series, sad 12 year old discovers a pastel pink world inside of her donut plushy, kind of like a mix of Bee and Puppycat and Twelve Forever), Marina (movie, suicidal girl gets sent to a journey to the sea by the ocean goddess and she finds lots of cool stuff), Magic Forest (series, 13 year old boy and his owl mom in, guess what, a magic forest), The Rock Block (series, emulates the feeling 2000's cartoons give you, main characters are Jay, Kiffer, Princess, Quinn B., Beatrice, Molly, Rey and Chip), Satelitre (a sad series in which an astronaut 8 year old boy's parents get lost and he has an entire aircraft to himself, soon enough he realizes its not as cool as he thinks it is and he dies on a crash at the end, trust me you're gonna cry), and the only game is Cat Village (you're a cat with powers which he doesnt use much, and you explore 7 worlds: 1. startHOuse, 2. Plain Old Woods, 3. Actual Plains, 4. Marketland, 5. Europa, 6. recreodelpantano and 7. The Summit, it's very inspired on the videogame Journey and it's absolutely LITTERED with Neil Cicierega references). Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

This was very insightful, I knew what goes on behind the scenes in animation, but never in this much in depth, as someone who wants to makes cartoons, this give me a clear idea on what to actually do, for years I've been collecting creator ip bible guides to assist me , I'm not finished on this one idea, but I will, also, since many in independent creators are making their own studios (and companies to place ip's) to produce their content for various places gives it an added plus.
For years, I wanted to try that, though I'm good at drawing/illustration, more in hands on could help as well as writing , as for years I've managed to meet with those who worked in the industry and meet back with more tips, this gives me more ideas and a push to keep at it.

You got the definitions of sequences, scenes and shots wrong. (unless it's specific to animation, which would be weird if they actually did that and in that case you can forget what I'm about to write)
    - A sequence is a series of scenes that belong in 1 sequence. For an example a "car chase sequence" can start from when the person steps into the car until the end of the chase.
    - A scene is a location. So a car chase sequence can happen through a downtown area, then suburbs and then farm land. Those are 3 scenes (downtown, suburbs, farmland)
    - Then, scenes exist of different shots. E.g. In the downtown scene of the car chase sequence, there's maybe a shot from above of a car taking a sharp turn. Then ANOTHER shot from inside the police car chasing the first car.
Every time the location changes, it's a different scene, even if it's part of the same sequence. So someone stepping through a door, from inside to outside is 1 sequence, *but 2 scenes* . The same counts for going into another room, those are 2 different scenes. It goes even deeper than that, because it also has to do with time. So even if you're in the same location, if you make a cut from e.g. morning to evening, it's also 2 different scenes. But that's not important here.
The general public often calls things a "scene" when they actually mean sequence.
And then you end up in acts, which consists of different sequences.
    Yes, I write screenplays 😂

Oh my god, I LOVE this video! Mostly because me and my friends (friends that I didn’t pick just because they’re my friends, but simply because they are REALLY good with character design, stories, storyboards etc.) are making an animation someday and I hope for it to be on Cartoon Network and weve been working on this for about over a year now and this video help out a lot because some of the stuff in here, I didn’t even know, so thank you! And I hope one day I can be a successful cartoon creator that can work on legit anything because I’m fine with doing any part of it! Love you Roundtable! 😤💕💖

I've said for a while that I'd like to be either a showrunner or a storyboarder, but seeing the process going into those two, I feel like I should try and hone in my talents before I confidently say that I want to be one. I just want to thank you guys for posting this, it really gives a lot of insight into the whole cartoon process that I never really considered before.

Vox thank you so much for this info. I've been trying to make a show for a year and a half but my Adobe cloud is backfiring on me so I have no animatics ^u^' but I have a lot of scripts so once I get to college and graduate I might have to make it a web series instead of a cn or nick show. but I needed this talk especially if I'm trying to do this type of job because at the moment I'm doing everything background, scripts, character design, animation but i'm not doing voices and music so I'm backed into a corner. but thank you for this info =w='

I always thought being a show runner was just too much of a goal? Like I always thought it'd be pretty much impossible for me to get as far as having my own show airing on tv for people to enjoy, plus, I don't know if I'd have the creativity to come up with a story that enjoyable, so it's always been a dream of mine to help whoever does make it up there with storyboard or rough animation, I really like character design as well, it's what I'm willing to put all my motivation, work and passion into, it's what I wanna do.

I want to be an indie cartoon maker (someone who makes cartoons independently) because I don't want to go through all that paper work, budget, what other people decide for me to put in a network. So, i'd probably start making my own shows inside of a youtube channel, which I could pretend/make it into a very own TV network.

Hey i just wanna say this ia an awesome video and, while im not in the industry (yet) this is pretty accurate to the animation process. I'm currently in the process of directing my own short film, and most of this is exactly stuff that my college professors have talked about. So i guess just thanks for providing an accurate look into the animation process (especially for those who maybe cant afford to go to art school or are unsure about if they think animation is for them)
