  • For 40 years, ESA has been shaping the future in space, while delivering crucial access to space for Europe. That work continues, as brand-new rockets are set to take flight: some reusable, some carbon-neutral, with hybrid propulsion, two and three stages, small, large, crewed and uncrewed, to Earth orbit and deep space, the journey continues.
    All of these missions are currently in development in Europe and will ensure our continued ability to explore beyond our own home, while looking back to learn more about it.
    This, is the future of space exploration.

      ESA runs on a much smaller budget than many other space agencies Which are all underfunded considering the vanity projects politicians love to pump taxpayers' money into. There are many projects ESA has proposed that the funding has never been given for. Things including using the ATV vehicles as starting points for crewed vehicles, space stations, etc. To name just a tiny fraction.

      More like 1-2 steps behind, most of this is stuff they should have been doing 10-15 years ago and that others have been doing for years at this point. Hell, some of this is stuff that ESA has been talking about for 10 years and not made any significant progress with. On top of that, Vega has been plagued with problems and Ariane 6 still hasn't flown yet. Europe's launch industry is in a very difficult position, and it won't be easy to recover from that.

    It's a good idea to express yourself more on social media. There is so little communication about the state of affairs. In the field of existing space rockets. In terms of commercial programs. In the field of private and commercial startups. How ESA will finance the new companies. When Europe will start using reusable 1st stage rockets. When will Europe use reusable 1st and 2nd stage rockets? When will Europe have a space plane? We see some animations about hardware projects. But when will we see the demonstrator, prototype, and first test flights of the next generation spaceplane or space vehicles? The only way to succeed rapidly is to boost the new private companies in their efforts. Let the competition begin. Let us join the space race and create the European space economy.

    • @bryanillenberg
      @bryanillenberg 5 месяцев назад +8

      POV of an American:
      "How ESA will finance the new companies"
      They won't if Arianegroup/France has anything to say about it. But if they do receive funding, it will be paying for the launch of ESA payloads and the development of an Ariane 6 replacement.
      "When Europe will start using reusable 1st stage rockets."
      Most likely no earlier than 2030.
      "When will Europe use reusable 1st and 2nd stage rockets?"
      Maybe by 2040. Maybe.
      "When will Europe have a space plane?"
      Space Rider is technically a space plane. But it doesn't land on a runway. Assuming you want something like the Space Shuttle, then you shouldn't. The Shuttle sent the USA back to the pre-apollo days. Maybe you guys can pull it off (If Europe tries, then I'll be wishing for their success), but not before 2040.
      "But when will we see the demonstrator, prototype, and first test flights of the next generation spaceplane or space vehicles?"
      For Susie (which, most likely, will suffer the same fate as Hermes), that would be now. But for an actual prototype, then it varies. I'd expect to see Falcon 9-gen prototype in the 2027-2028 time range, and Starship-gen prototypes in the 2035-2040 range.
      "The only way to succeed rapidly is to boost the new private companies in their efforts"
      Agreed. SpaceX is proof of this.
      "Let the competition begin. Let us join the space race and create the European space economy."
      I would love to see that happen.

      @bryanillenberg 5 месяцев назад +3

      @@tecmons One: NET 2026. And they are roughly where SpaceX was with Starship in 2018. That implies at least five years until a test flight. Most likely more.
      And Ariane Next will take even longer, with development probably starting after Maia is proven.
      I want Europe to succeed, but from an external perspective, it seems very unlikely.

    Total mass to orbit:
    SpaceX - over 80%
    Rest of the world (including rest of the US) - less than 20%.
    And that's before Starship. Once Starship is flying, the rest of the industry put together will be a footnote, a rounding error in SpaceX's numbers.

    ça aurait été sympa de citer Latitude aussi :/

      A quel point l'ESA est impliqué dans l'aide ou même le financement des projets de Latitude.
      Je pense qu'ils présentent surtout des entreprises et projets où l'ESA a de l'impact.

      Si c’est ca, ça pose la question de pourquoi latitude et autres Start-up françaises ne sont pas dans le scope … la compétition sera-est-elle vraiment fair et ouverte ?

    As a space enthusiast from the US, I wish my country would put up the funding for NASA. NASA is able to do so much to this day, but on less than 1/80th of the funding (in terms of percentage of what it gets from the government) it had when we sent someone to the moon.
    I'm glad there are other countries taking this seriously and propelling humanity forward.

    So the second to last spacecraft, the Susie, does a bellyflop and then powered landing like the Starship? Also that last one looked a lot like a Falcon 9.
    Can't fault ESA to toy around these ideas but I am also glad to see many new designs. Kerosene engine using fuel made of old plastic? Sounds weird, but I'm up for it.
