  • Joshua Uche drops truth on taking less money to stay with Patriots
Joshua Uche had the opportunity to earn a decent paycheck in his first free agency experience. Instead, he took the opportunity to remain with the New England Patriots on a discount.
The Patriots edge rusher reportedly turned down a two-year deal that had $11 million guaranteed to stay in New England, opting to sign a one-year, $3 million contract instead, via Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network. Uche heard people call him “crazy” for turning down, but he felt that he had to remain in New England, via NBC Sports Boston.
“There were some options on the table, but in my heart, I felt that I was destined to be a Patriot,” Uche told reporters on Tuesday, explaining his decision for the first time since he re-signed with the team in March. “Despite what I was offered, I felt like this was my calling to be a Patriot,”
“I felt like it’s what I was destined to do,” Uche continued. “It’s where I went to be. I don’t want to be anywhere else. So, gotta do what you gotta do - follow your heart.”
Uche seemed to understand that he’ll have the opportunity to make more money next offseason if he has a strong enough year in 2024. But ultimately, he wants to still play with the Patriots beyond this upcoming campaign.
“A lot of people focus on the financial parts of the decision, but I feel like the team that gave me an opportunity, there’s nowhere else I’d rather be,” Uche said. “I can’t envision myself playing for another team. However that shakes out, I just know at the end of the day, the ball was in my court, and this is the dream that I want to fulfill - to be a Patriot.”
