In 1992 during the World Cup he announced his arrival by running out a Pakistani batsman by NOT throwing the ball at the stumps...but by RUNNING AND DIVING at the stumps with ball in hand. They calculated / speculated that Jonty saved 20 runs per batting innings in his fielding position. Not just because of insane acrobattics, but also because he was like a sniper...running out batters like crazy. Runs batsmen would normally take they simply wouldn't dare to if Jonty was there.
Jonty Rhodes and Herscelle Gibbs were the perfect fielding partnership, Jonty was more defensive so the ball wouldn't get past him and Herscelle was more attacking so he would create more chances for run outs and catches and were both great batsman. Even Ponting said he hated playing against them because it was hard to score.
Jhonty was an average batsman but he made up with his fielding skills, I remember the first series I watched was between India and south Africa way back in the 90s and the biggest thing I took out of it was that every match jhonty saved around 30-40 runs and it was very frustrating. Mind you where he used to field that position gets balls coming at you around 100 mph sometimes even faster

The umpires will check to see if at that first point of contact with the ground the part of the foot that is in the air would be behind the line or not then judge the no ball

Another comment - catching is definitely another level above in Cricket over Baseball, solely because of the lack of gloves. No doubt. But as you saw for the recent Windies v England Test - dropped catches are relatively common compared to Baseball where its not uncommon for 2B, SS and 3B to field at 0.995 for a season. Also, Baseballers are far superior throwers. Even catchers - picking off runners at second takes a very hard, very accurate throw (Yadier Molina ! What a beast. Is he the best ever ?) I hadn't checked the comments to see if anyone answered but a ball is considered a no-ball when no part of the bowler's foot is found behind the line when it first lands. You can deliver a ball with your whole foot, half a foot or a small piece of your heel behind the line but a part of the boot must land behind the line once the foot first makes contact with the ground. There are bowlers who's foot slides on deliveries but it is that first point of contact that determines whether the ball is legal or not.
Jonty was an ok Batsman averaging 35 in both ODIs and Test cricket but its not an average of a top player but his fielding made him impossible to drop escpecially in ODI when Run Outs are far more common which is how he played 245 ODIs

to be a legal bowl some part of the boot must be behind the line, even if its a very tiny bit its ok. most of the time what happens is that a lot of bowlers foot lands behind the crease but slides away as they deliver the bowl.as long as the some part of the foot LANDS behind the crease it wont be a no bowl.

I think the rule for no ball is at least half of your feet should be inside the line... I meant the first contact.. not the follow through. If you feet goes outside the line more than say 3/4 then most of the time it's a no ball. It's umpires call. Yes the umpire misses it also. That's why now-a-days every time there is an out they check with the TV umpire about the no ball.

Don't worry too much about defense and defending...just don't say throwing. Bowling is preferred, but you can say pitching. We're pretty good with baseball terms and we understand that you will use those terms.
Unlike baseball ring fielders in cricket can not be considered as defence men, reason being they are in attacking positions, i,e to impose on the batsmen that they are there to get'em out (catches/ runouts) & not to defend runs. Especially the one's really close in or the ones standing behind the stumps usually on the off side (called Slips). Fielders outside the ring are there to defend runs. Hence can be considered as defence men. Though Jhonty was always or mostly in attacking positions to enforce wickets. And As cricket is much more strategic sport, hence the field positions also become subjective to the situation the game is in.
I have watched few baseball catches. And it seems to me that, since players try to catch the ball with one hand only sometimes some easy catches become very difficult. And most of the time their balance is off. If they had gone for their other hand or both hand it would have been better. I think in baseball chances of getting hurt due to imbalance is very high.

There are bowlers who's foot slides on deliveries but it is that first point of contact that determines whether the ball is legal or not.
The whole foot has to cross the line to be no ball
Jonty was an ok Batsman averaging 35 in both ODIs and Test cricket but its not an average of a top player but his fielding made him impossible to drop escpecially in ODI when Run Outs are far more common which is how he played 245 ODIs

Yes, barehand catches are sometimes real painful. Once I blew off my middle finger trying to stop a ball smashed at me, and had to go through a surgery...😅
*Answer to Nick's question:* It's a No ball if the bowler's front foot heel lands just on the line or in front of the line (also called popping crease). It's a fair delivery if the foot heel is behind the line.

If the foot passes even an inch over the white line, it's a no ball. The way it is described is "some part of the foot has to be on or behind the white line for the delivery to be a legal one"

The hardest part of cricket for me is not facing the fast bowlers, but be fielding close in to the batsman. You guys need to see some of the catches those fielders take and like you say without a glove.
to be a legal bowl some part of the boot must be behind the line, even if its a very tiny bit its ok. most of the time what happens is that a lot of bowlers foot lands behind the crease but slides away as they deliver the bowl.as long as the some part of the foot LANDS behind the crease it wont be a no bowl.

I think the rule for no ball is at least half of your feet should be inside the line... I meant the first contact.. not the follow through. If you feet goes outside the line more than say 3/4 then most of the time it's a no ball. It's umpires call. Yes the umpire misses it also. That's why now-a-days every time there is an out they check with the TV umpire about the no ball.
For a delivery to be legal, some part of the foot has to LAND behind the line, even after landing if it slides infront it's not considered a no ball.
If it lands on the line, it's still a no ball, we say the line belongs to the umpire.

cricketers, and kids in general are taught from a young age to catch with soft hands, you learn to lead the ball into your hands. go with the direction, fingers out straight at a 90 degree angle to the direction of the ball's travel to avoid broken fingers, as an ex player i can tell you we spend many full days of training just to learn the art of catching high balls, or ground level bullets

Jonty was a great batsman as well his career was a bit short because South Africa was banned for international cricket for a long time because of apartheid and when they were admitted back it was already halfway through a lot of players careers.
When apartheid was abolished in south Africa for the first time all races came together to support cricket. In south Africa there is 4 races blacks , whites, coloureds and indians First time south Africans was cheering for cricket like citizens cos cricket was viewed a white man's game. Indians here are the largest non resident indians outside india the British brought us here in 1860 as slaves. Today indians make up 40 percent of doctors and engineers here . Jonty Rhodes is a legend anywhere in the world if you want to give some one credit for there fielding you just call him Jonty Rhodes, there isnt even a 2nd option here, i am not kidding he was so far ahead of everyone, he was specially famous for his long diving fielding and catches.

2:36 😂 I do hate it but you're wrong about one more thing that baseball was created by Americans to have their own thing coz that was just the way baseball was promoted at the expense of Cricket, till then it was apparently the most popular sport in both US & Canada (from what I read), both also played the first ever International Cricket match in 1844 (match organised in 1843 apparently didn't took place due to some confusions about the scheduling) & that match was also apparently the first international sports event in modern times even before modern Olympics. Baseball also came from England & the oldest written reference to baseball is found in the 1755 diary of a Surrey man William Bray (I first saw this on a clip of a baseball documentary made by some American baseball fans looking into the sport's history, clip was on mlb website & probably is still there). I do believe baseball was likely developed from Cricket (despite the rounders claim) & I even once saw a video (that youtube video saved in a playlist appears to be gone, probably removed) where after a tournament I think at Broward County Cricket Stadium a local American politician (may be mayor or some council member) said it was developed by kids on English beaches trying to play Cricket but since the ball wasn't bouncing well they bowled mostly Full Tosses which resulted in baseball like pitching (pitching itself in Cricket means hitting the ball on the pitch).

Fielding has always been a specialised field in Cricket & that's why the best ones like Jonty Rhodes stand out. Fielding now due to t20 Cricket is said to be improving since saving every single run means a lot. But I'll accept baseballers definitely have superior throwing skills.
Still the best aspect of Cricket for me is Bowling & no comparison exists in baseball.

Don't worry too much about defense and defending...just don't say throwing. Bowling is preferred, but you can say pitching. We're pretty good with baseball terms and we understand that you will use those terms.
Unlike baseball ring fielders in cricket can not be considered as defence men, reason being they are in attacking positions, i,e to impose on the batsmen that they are there to get'em out (catches/ runouts) & not to defend runs. Especially the one's really close in or the ones standing behind the stumps usually on the off side (called Slips). Fielders outside the ring are there to defend runs. Hence can be considered as defence men.
Though Jhonty was always or mostly in attacking positions to enforce wickets. And As cricket is much more strategic sport, hence the field positions also become subjective to the situation the game is in.

I have watched few baseball catches. And it seems to me that, since players try to catch the ball with one hand only sometimes some easy catches become very difficult. And most of the time their balance is off. If they had gone for their other hand or both hand it would have been better. I think in baseball chances of getting hurt due to imbalance is very high.
