I bought almost all the reissues of Game Theory, I'm lacking Big Shot Chronicles and Two Steps From The Middle Ages, but I'm unable to import stuff right because our currency has lost all it's value and Amazon importing fees are ridiculous right now, which is a shame. Anyway, maybe someday I'll complete my collection.
Great video! I love your Byrds shirt! Such a great band and so influential to Country Rock along with Nesmith. Those early REM albums are killer. I Forgot about The Church -"Starfish", such a beautiful album. The label Arista promoted it by sending every record shop a huge stack of posters of that album cover. You literally couldve wallpapered a room with them & had extras.

The Sundays are another band that lives on the sturdy Johnny Marr/The Smiths branch of Jangle Pop. If you don’t get to them in your videos or don’t have any of their records, I highly recommend them. (Sorry I entered this comment before the end of your video.). I love Jangle Pop. The Byrds and Big Star are, to me, the foundations of American Jangle Pop. The Smiths did the same for British Jangle Pop as REM did for American Jangle Pop, which is they updated the sound. I was a latecomer on both because being in college during the 80’s, their fans were relentless in their fervor and college radio seemed to play them on repeat.

I just stumbled on to your channel. I think you’re the only person I’ve ever heard mention Close Lobsters. They were huge for me back in the day. I was actually in a Lobsters cover band called Kiss the Flower. We played the whole Foxheads album at our shows, badly. When I saw they had a new album last year I thought my head was going to explode. You’re right, definitely album of the year last year. Great stuff. Thanks.

Thanks so much for this, Omaha! An amazing amount of material/bands covered in a short space of time - you're absolutely right, this sort of thing is a labour of love and can take ages to cover...I'll need to move on to Part 2 soon. Incidentally, it was great to hear 'It Won't Be Wrong' as the opening snippet of this video - I've missed Roger's patented Rickenbacker chime. Also of course wonderful to hear The Barracudas; when living back on the Canadian Prairie my band used to cover 'I Can't Pretend', which we'd often pair up with a Groovies number (generally 'Shake Some Action'). In closing, a massive thanks for pointing out the Close Lobsters; despite having lived in the UK for decades I'd only just been able to sample their stuff now (beginning with 'Let's Make Some Plans').

Great overview and nicely edited too, Hannah! Yes, always remember the Byrds. I think Robyn Hitchcock is more popular in the States than in the UK which is strange as he’s such an English artist. Yes the Go Betweens output is massively expensive at the moment. I hope the record companies take note and do some affordable re-issues. I showed that fantastic Springfields LP in one of my videos. I’ve been listening to music forever, started to love music when I heard The Beatles, 50 years ago,started as pop then invented rock, some bands are both like REM , some jangle some rock , it’s all good. Blues, Country, Folk , Jazz , Rock, Soul, Blue Grass, Disco, I never get tired of old music and theirs always something new around the corner . P.s sub categories include, prog rock , country rock, big band, and more including the types of music introvert does videos about.Love it all ☮️ and ❤️ like Ringo says.

I don't think anyone accomplished that kind of success in such a short time. I think you will learn to love the debut and Meat is Murder. They may even become your favorites in time. Couldn't believe I found it used at a store here in Omaha last year. Yeah, the Barracudas do I Want My Woody Back! You'd really like this album from the Barracudas. Check it out! Another wonderful video, Hanna. This entire sub-genre is right in my wheelhouse. I am pretty much a lifelong fan of most of the bands you presented, and I even discovered a few you listed that I can't wait to check out. Your passion and knowledge for "jangle pop" (and all things music) is amazing, and this video certainly will have me digging back in my collection in the coming days to revisit some "old jangle pop friends." I have an interesting listening history with The Bats (and several other New Zealand/AUS bands, that I won't go into now, ha ha). From there, I listened again to, Able Tasmans, also on Flying Nun Records. Able Tasmans definitely have that Byrds/Beach Boys/Jangle sound down that I know you love. Thanks again for re-igniting the jangle pop spirit into the world. I'm in the zone.

@@TheOmahaIntrovert So first of all, I love the shirt! It's so cool to see something that's a bit different from the norm of Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, Grateful Dead, the Doors, etc. shirts. So I got to say that I was totally misinformed on what jangle pop was. I did consider the Byrds jangle pop but didn't think of it as tied to the electric 12 string. I wouldn't have thought as REM and the Smiths as jangle pop so you've gave me quite the education here. It was cool to see you whip out the Close Lobsters album. Again, that's one I wouldn't have picked up if it wasn't for you. As I said before...with REM, I much prefer their 80's work to the stuff they started putting out in the mid 90's and beyond. The Soft Boys are still a band I need to look into. I appreciate Robyn's work but haven't really investigated the Soft Boys at all. The Barracudas, the Springfields, and Let's Active are all new ones for me. The way you described the Barracudas though makes me want to seek that one out. The Go Betweens...I'll be keeping my eye for you...when and if the cloud lifts and I can do some record shopping again. You weren't kidding about the prices! I picked up that same Chills, Silver Bullets album a year or two back. It's a great one. I am eagerly waiting for part II. BTW - I loved all the little edits you put in this video. This one must have taken a little time to put together. Well done!

I'm totally with you on R.E.M. and the 80s being their best output. It's kind of aggravating that the Go-Betweens haven't released reissues. There is a recent box set that came out in the last year? However, it's well over $200. Argh! My videos are taking longer and longer to edit. Especially adding the song clips...that probably takes the longest because I import from the CD and then I have to trim it down to the 10 seconds I want. Eeeeks! I get in a zone when I edit, though! One of my favorite genres and really nicely explained (though, frankly, you could have an entire channel centered on this topic)... some nice selections which may not be especially well known to North American audiences. Canadian band, Blue Rodeo, might be worth a nod. Also: Don't forget Love -- right in there with the Byrds at the onset. Keep up the great work!

Really great extensive list, so very glad you shined a light on Robyn Hitchcock, so damn underappreciated. 3 bands that would fall under this sub genre I love are The Jazz Butcher (Start with A Scandal In Bohemia), Aztec Camera (High Land Hard Rain) and Orange Juice (Rip it Up, or You Can't Hide Your Love Forever). You may be mentioning them in your next installment, but if not they are worth checking out.

Fascinating video,the first time I heard the term jangle pop was on Wikipedia when I looked up R.E.M. one time in the early 2000s but didn’t read much into it until years later when I discovered the bands early work after having listened to their 1988 to 2003 compilation In time that it lead me to be a fan being so blown away by their first appearance in 1983,my all time favourite song is Sitting Still.I’ve known about the Soft Boys since the mid 2000s but it’s kinda hard to track anything down by them,great songs though,and the Church I’ve known about for many years as well,Metropolis was the first song I ever heard by them,btw The Byrd’s Turn Turn Turn is really the first ever jangle pop song I heard which was back in grade school(3rd grade I believe)..fascinating video looking forward to part 2!
Hey there! I, too found out about jangle pop in the early or mid-2000s when I was getting into Big Star, the dB's, etc! Sitting Still is a favorite of mine, too! Yep Roc reissued the Soft Boys' two LPs. It's hard to find originals of those, so I'm happy with the reissues and they are pretty affordable, too! Saw the Church back in 2017 and I believe they performed Metropolis live. What a great tune! Glad you'll be back for part 2! Jangle pop forever!
I finally have found a channel that resonates with me and the musical taste I enjoy! Great video, have heard of some of the bands, others (while a twee pop fan myself), I've yet to check out! Subscribed. Since the pandemic began, I've been also getting back into collecting records, but also had to resort to eBay for some certain LPs (either because Out Of Print or not sold at my local record store). Hurts the bank account as far as shipping is concerned... Not sure if you've heard of The Bats, but their 1990 album "The Law Of Things" is a great indie pop LP, as is their '87 album "Daddy's Highway". Looking forward to more videos from you! Cheers.

@@TheOmahaIntrovert The more I think about it, I wish they'd filmed at least one of the key shows on those tours, and put out a DVD of it, or whatever. I hope they did, and that will someday see release. I guess it just costs a ton to film a show properly these days and mix it for a proper release.I was just overjoyed to have seen one of them, never though they'd do a reunion. I also saw both nights of Bauhaus in 1998 here in NYC, that was insane.

I don’t know if they would count as being in the same category as Jangle Pop, but Echo and the Bunnymen make a lot of amazing music, and they have some great 12 String songs on a few of their albums. Their guitar player uses a very sexy Vox Teardrop 12 string which has a bigsby vibrato and it has a haunting effect. If you haven’t already heard it, you might get serious goosebumps from their album “Ocean Rain”. They have a self titled album which is more upbeat but also a very strong album full of Jangly 12 strings. Oh crap… you just mentioned them like 13 minutes in! Whatever, great videos and thanks for sharing Close Lobsters with me. I’d heard of them but haven’t dug into their music.
If they themselves don't, Chameleons (UK or otherwise) is better described as inside the genre than out. Boomtown Rats as one of our 'proto-hero bands', or as where the genre evolved from?

Well you know I've been trying to understand what the heck you are saying by jangle pop so this is definitely helpful! I wrote down many of these albums to check out so I'll have to report back once I give some a listen. The list of albums to check out always just keeps growing, lol! I know REM well and I have heard a song or two from the Smiths in passing but that's it. I didn't know they were jangle pop but at least with REM I can see it! I like how this channel takes such a detailed look at genres- some bands stay in one lane- others are harder to pin down even during the same album or song- artists that genre jump a lot risk audience alienation for their artistic vision- anyway i always learn something new on here :)

The Byrds are simply amazing. Loved buying the remasters of all their albums with bonus material on CD. Bonus material included the band arguing with each other in the studio whilst recording one of their songs! The daggers were out that day! David Crosby was my favourite member and loved all his songs for the band. One of the bonus tracks is a controversial song written by David Crosby called Triad, apparently recorded under protest by the rest of the band as it's about a menage a trois! It sounds beautiful and David sings beautifully on it. David Crosby's first solo album called "If only I can remember my name" is a masterpiece and one of my all time favourites. Naturally I loved him in Crosby, Stills and Nash. An epic band. Basically anything Crosby did was pure gold. 😊

I LITERALLY just spun The Blurred Crusade this past Sunday morning lol. I must say it's so cool too see your music area behind you. Hi Hanna A very interesting and informative video. Lots of stuff I am unaware of (Springfields, The Bats) and I will check them out. I agree with the Byrds but I think The Searchers were the first jangle band, they played Rickenbackers and Roger McGuinn was very influenced by them and they are still very underrated. (They have just retired). The Beau Brummels were a great jangle band. I saw the Soft Boys many times they were part of the British Pub Rock scene (another genre). I am extremely impressed that you are into The Barracudas, what LP Drop Out is. I have got most of the Go-Betweens and Felt's early 45's and LP's, getting pricey now. So much music that you are into, its very impressive. I am looking forward to the next instalment of Jangle Pop.. You might mention this band, Teenage Fanclub. Take care. Gary
Hi Gary. I mentioned the Searchers as being an early influencer. I think you may have missed that bit. Have been meaning to sample the Beau Brummels. Oh yeah, I can't believe how much both CDs and vinyl from the Go-Betweens and Felt are. It's unbelievable. Luckily there are Felt vinyl reissues. There is a Go-Betweens box set, but it's well over $200. I featured Teenage Fanclub in my power pop video. I have quite the affinity for them! They're definitely both power pop and jangle pop! I always loved that Byrds-y sound. I consider myself to be knowledgeable about music. I have a very large record/CD collection. And yet, most of these bands I never heard of. When I was younger I used to love to discover bands that I never heard before on the radio back in the 70s. Well watching this video exposed me to a lot of bands that sound very interesting to me. Just when I thought I knew about most bands, I discover more. Thanks for that. (I should add that the first concert I ever went to was The Byrds back in 1971 just after Untitled came out.)

Another great episode, man, those jangly bands from the early to mid 80's were the driving force for my taste in music. Especially The Church...Tear It All Away from their first album is the ultimate Church jangle for me. Nice to hear The Go Betweens get some love. Steve Kilbey and Grant. did a lot of work together and had a side project known as Jack Frost, if you didn't know this already of course. Have you heardFor Against before? I'm 72 years old and have been listening / collecting / seeing live bands, since I was 10 years old (1958). I did a radio program in the 80's (on a California public radio station) which I originally was going to call "The Jingle Jangle Jungle" but eventually named it "Subterranean Dreams" cause I didn't want to limit the scope of my musical interests... I especially love all varieties of PSYCHEDELIA, and punk, post-punk, techno pop, and space-rock. Looking forward to pt.2 of this topic. Hey, I just came across my an old vinyl copy of one of my favorite jangle pop bands of the 80's. You really have to listen to Let's Active. Their first EP Afoot, and their first album Cypress are two must haves.
Love all those bands, and the cross between Jangle Pop and Power Pop. I get into most of them by reading interviews on magazines like Alternative Press or Guitar World from bands like Cheap Trick, R.E.M., Sonic Youth, Johnny Marr (The Smiths), Mike Watt (Minutemen), Henry Rollins (Black Flag/Rollins Band), Nirvana, The Smashing Pumpkins, etc, where they mentioned The Byrds, Yellow Balloon, Robyn Hitchcock/The Soft Boys, Sagittarius, Big Star, XTC, The Shoes, The Raspberries, The Primitives, The Vaselines, The Go-Betweens, Divinyls, The Sundays, etc.
Love this video. IMO the ultimate JP song is “Feel A Whole Lot Better” by the Byrds...I first heard it on Full Moon Fever by TP and then when the Gin Blossoms Covered it at The R&R HOF Concert. Im not a big deep cut guy on this stuff but Im hoping The Blossoms and Pretenders and Hoff/Sweet cover albums make the cut in the next one! MORE REM!

Hi Hanna ! , No doubt REM & The Smiths flew the flag with their brilliance but The Church were probably the best. They did score a much deserved hit with 🌟 🐟. Their Best Album "Seance " never got a proper 🇺🇸 release. On one album " Flesh & Blood " Roxy Music went " jangle " even covering " 8 miles High " Keep an eye out in the budget bins for " Rough Night In Jericho " by Dreams So Real. They were from Athens , GA like REM. Lost classic. Hope to 👀 Lloyd Cole in part 2 ! 😎. See Ya Hanna 😃

Roger McGuinn and Johnny Marr smacked the Hardcore Punk out of me. Speaking of Punk, there's been a rise of Jangle/Shoegaze popularity among the Midwest Hardcore/Emo scene. When you got the chance, I highly suggest listening to *Peripheral Vision* by the band *Turnover* or *Hyperview* by the band *Title Fight* . On another note, I just wanna say that you look gorgeous ma'am. Coming from a guy born in 99'. 😂
I have heard a few tunes by Title Fight but I'm just not really able to get into emo in any form or variation. I'll check Turnover. And haha, thank you for the compliment! I guess I am 16 years older than you! Hehe! Cheers!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert Yeah, I wasn't much of an Emo fan either, in its' traditional sense at least. It actually caught me by surprise how Turnover's album was even labeled as "Emo", since it sounded more akin to something by Riverside or The Stone Roses. And also since I found their songs due to autoplay via The Field Mice.
Another great video. As usual you mentioned a ton of stuff I love, a few that I liked way back when, but had forgotten about & haven't played in decades. Some digging out of old CDs to be done again - and a recent band I wasn't aware of - The Stroppies. There's a great double CD by Grant McLennan, 'Horsebreaker Star' (1994) which was easily available really cheap in the UK in the late 90s. Nice to see The Chills mentioned. I've always been a huge fan of Robyn Hitchcock. I picked up a signed Church CD Single from somewhere and I think I have most of their albums. The Clean interested me. I thought, hang on, what's she talking about? They were a post punk hardcore band. When I checked I found I was mixing them up with another Kiwi band called The Clear, who eventually morphed into Lung. I shall now go search for my Let's Active, Felt & Barracudas CDs. I recently discovered a radio station out of Seattle (KEXP) that posts live sessions on RUclips & found they had bands like Slowdive, Swervedriver & Hatchie on there. Cool stuff. I also discovered a UK band I didn't know, called Hælos - sort of Leftfield Trip-Hoppy stuff, with some dream-pop elements. Excellent. Quite how I had to find out about a UK band from an American radio station I don't know, but there you go.

It’s refreshing to hear a female perspective of the “jangle pop” genre. That said, as much as I love the Soft Boys and Go-Betweens I don’t consider them “jangle pop”, bands, even if they have some songs that fit that description. I will give you props for mentioning obscure bands like the Barracudas, Close Lobsters and Felt, although Felt's music, however jangly, isn't very melodic. FYI to me, The Church define the jangly guitar sound for most of the ‘80’s, at least for their first five albums, although, R.E.M. is undoubtably the most influential band of that era.
Apparently Roger McGuinn put the Rickenbacker 360/12 through a wall of compression and limiter equipment in the studio, still not sure how he tackled that live, since there weren't compression pedals etc., back then. The compression and limiting gives his Ricky that extra high end, chiming ringing ultra-sustain sound. The 360/12 already sounds that way on its own, but treating it this way gave the band its distinctive sound. I also recently read that The Beatles used tons of the same compressors and limiters on their albums. I have a 12-string ac. electric, but not a Rickenbacker, I picked up a compression pedal recently, it definitely helps gives the 12-string a good top boost, and more sustain, even if it doesn't quite sound like The Byrds' treatment of it. You can even now buy the JangleBox pedal that McGuinn helped design, gives a Ricky that Byrds sound, but it costs $300.
Well that pedal is pretty badass, I'm sure. I didn't even know it existed! All I'm playing right now is my Taylor acoustic and I bought a Squier Paranormal Series Super-Sonic last summer. Was what I could afford and it's nice to at least be able to play an electric again. Down the road I hope to own a 12-string!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert I didn't know of it until a few weeks ago. It's expensive. If you need a Byrds sound, it's a must though. Although a good compression pedal will get you close. Taylors are darned good guitars, in fact, I know both Elliott Murphy and Bob Perry of Winter Hours both told me they love the Taylors. I think Elliott even endorses them. They're very playable and they also make baby Taylors for those of us with smaller hands. the 12-string is fantastic, what's not is having to put a whole new set of strings on it! But i just take my time and usually it's ok.

This is great, you almost did a documentary about Jangle Pop ¡ I love to sort my music by genres but this one is a little difficult for me cause those artits are all over the place in my record collection. Records from the most well known artists you showed like REM, Smiths, Robyn Hitchcock and The Church I have them as Post-punk. The Byrds I have them as Psych and Tom Petty as Jangle Pop. I dont have the records you showed from the more obscure artists, but you could argue some of the more iconic bands from the Latin Rock genre like early Heroes del Silencio or Caifanes have exactly that jangly ringing sound.

Other favorites, kind of jangle are Fobia and Babasónicos but Babasónicos are more psych. If you check all those bands Im pretty sure you'll find their singers to be pretty good looking. I mean all of them drive the girls crazy down here in Latin America ¡ lol

In terms of the Underwater Moonlight Yep Roc reissue, I personally heard on Discogs that it wasn't very good so I'm not sure about getting it, but I do really want a copy of that LP and the other pressings are very rare.

I bought almost all the reissues of Game Theory, I'm lacking Big Shot Chronicles and Two Steps From The Middle Ages, but I'm unable to import stuff right because our currency has lost all it's value and Amazon importing fees are ridiculous right now, which is a shame. Anyway, maybe someday I'll complete my collection.

I Forgot about The Church -"Starfish", such a beautiful album. The label Arista promoted it by sending every record shop a huge stack of posters of that album cover. You literally couldve wallpapered a room with them & had extras.

Arista put out a promotional cassette with tracks by their major artists there is a Church track unreleased elsewhere.

The Sundays are another band that lives on the sturdy Johnny Marr/The Smiths branch of Jangle Pop. If you don’t get to them in your videos or don’t have any of their records, I highly recommend them. (Sorry I entered this comment before the end of your video.). I love Jangle Pop. The Byrds and Big Star are, to me, the foundations of American Jangle Pop. The Smiths did the same for British Jangle Pop as REM did for American Jangle Pop, which is they updated the sound. I was a latecomer on both because being in college during the 80’s, their fans were relentless in their fervor and college radio seemed to play them on repeat.

I just stumbled on to your channel. I think you’re the only person I’ve ever heard mention Close Lobsters. They were huge for me back in the day. I was actually in a Lobsters cover band called Kiss the Flower. We played the whole Foxheads album at our shows, badly. When I saw they had a new album last year I thought my head was going to explode. You’re right, definitely album of the year last year. Great stuff. Thanks.

Thanks so much for this, Omaha! An amazing amount of material/bands covered in a short space of time - you're absolutely right, this sort of thing is a labour of love and can take ages to cover...I'll need to move on to Part 2 soon. Incidentally, it was great to hear 'It Won't Be Wrong' as the opening snippet of this video - I've missed Roger's patented Rickenbacker chime. Also of course wonderful to hear The Barracudas; when living back on the Canadian Prairie my band used to cover 'I Can't Pretend', which we'd often pair up with a Groovies number (generally 'Shake Some Action'). In closing, a massive thanks for pointing out the Close Lobsters; despite having lived in the UK for decades I'd only just been able to sample their stuff now (beginning with 'Let's Make Some Plans').

I was a college freshman in1985. Jangle pop was played 24/7 on the campus radio station.
Great overview and nicely edited too, Hannah! Yes, always remember the Byrds. I think Robyn Hitchcock is more popular in the States than in the UK which is strange as he’s such an English artist. Yes the Go Betweens output is massively expensive at the moment. I hope the record companies take note and do some affordable re-issues. I showed that fantastic Springfields LP in one of my videos. Nice definition of Jangle Pop, great music. I have been doing a 80s Left of The Dial series where I have been showing so many of these groups. I recently got a Clean EP, not cheap but very stoked to get it.

I’ve been listening to music forever, started to love music when I heard The Beatles, 50 years ago,started as pop then invented rock, some bands are both like REM , some jangle some rock , it’s all good. Blues, Country, Folk , Jazz , Rock, Soul, Blue Grass, Disco, I never get tired of old music and theirs always something new around the corner . P.s sub categories include, prog rock , country rock, big band, and more including the types of music introvert does videos about.Love it all ☮️ and ❤️ like Ringo says.

Hey there Hanna. Nice to see you holding Bombs and Queen is Dead. They looked very cool in your hands. They were my favorite eighties band by far. I don't think anyone accomplished that kind of success in such a short time. I think you will learn to love the debut and Meat is Murder. They may even become your favorites in time. Andy and Mike also played a huge part in their success. Good to see you holding up Foxheads Stalk This Land. I really enjoyed that album. I think I showed it a few videos back. Yes. I had no clue that Felt released a best of. I only have 'Ignite the Seven Cannons' on vinyl. I see that Primitive Painters is the last track on that. What an amazing song. I could not play side A enough when I bought it. So glad you are listening to them. Lawrence is one of my favorite vocalists from the eighties. I got to check out that Barracudas album. Couldn't believe I found it used at a store here in Omaha last year. Yeah, the Barracudas do I Want My Woody Back! You'd really like this album from the Barracudas. Check it out! Another wonderful video, Hanna. This entire sub-genre is right in my wheelhouse. I am pretty much a lifelong fan of most of the bands you presented, and I even discovered a few you listed that I can't wait to check out. Your passion and knowledge for "jangle pop" (and all things music) is amazing, and this video certainly will have me digging back in my collection in the coming days to revisit some "old jangle pop friends." You covered a lot of ground in Part 1, so I can't wait to see where Part 2 takes you.

I have an interesting listening history with The Bats (and several other New Zealand/AUS bands, that I won't go into now, ha ha). From there, I listened again to, Able Tasmans, also on Flying Nun Records. Able Tasmans definitely have that Byrds/Beach Boys/Jangle sound down that I know you love. Thanks again for re-igniting the jangle pop spirit into the world. I'm in the zone.

@@TheOmahaIntrovert So first of all, I love the shirt! It's so cool to see something that's a bit different from the norm of Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, Grateful Dead, the Doors, etc. shirts. So I got to say that I was totally misinformed on what jangle pop was. I did consider the Byrds jangle pop but didn't think of it as tied to the electric 12 string. I wouldn't have thought as REM and the Smiths as jangle pop so you've gave me quite the education here. It was cool to see you whip out the Close Lobsters album. Again, that's one I wouldn't have picked up if it wasn't for you. As I said before...with REM, I much prefer their 80's work to the stuff they started putting out in the mid 90's and beyond. The Soft Boys are still a band I need to look into. I appreciate Robyn's work but haven't really investigated the Soft Boys at all. The Barracudas, the Springfields, and Let's Active are all new ones for me. The way you described the Barracudas though makes me want to seek that one out.
The Go Betweens...I'll be keeping my eye for you...when and if the cloud lifts and I can do some record shopping again. You weren't kidding about the prices! I picked up that same Chills, Silver Bullets album a year or two back. It's a great one. I am eagerly waiting for part II.

I'm totally with you on R.E.M. and the 80s being their best output. It's kind of aggravating that the Go-Betweens haven't released reissues. There is a recent box set that came out in the last year? However, it's well over $200. Argh! My videos are taking longer and longer to edit. Especially adding the song clips...that probably takes the longest because I import from the CD and then I have to trim it down to the 10 seconds I want. Eeeeks! I get in a zone when I edit, though! You know how it is...you are the master! Hope you have a great week!

One of my favorite genres and really nicely explained (though, frankly, you could have an entire channel centered on this topic)... some nice selections which may not be especially well known to North American audiences. Canadian band, Blue Rodeo, might be worth a nod. Also: Don't forget Love -- right in there with the Byrds at the onset. Keep up the great work!

Really great extensive list, so very glad you shined a light on Robyn Hitchcock, so damn underappreciated. 3 bands that would fall under this sub genre I love are The Jazz Butcher (Start with A Scandal In Bohemia), Aztec Camera (High Land Hard Rain) and Orange Juice (Rip it Up, or You Can't Hide Your Love Forever). You may be mentioning them in your next installment, but if not they are worth checking out.

Fascinating video,the first time I heard the term jangle pop was on Wikipedia when I looked up R.E.M. one time in the early 2000s but didn’t read much into it until years later when I discovered the bands early work after having listened to their 1988 to 2003 compilation In time that it lead me to be a fan being so blown away by their first appearance in 1983,my all time favourite song is Sitting Still.I’ve known about the Soft Boys since the mid 2000s but it’s kinda hard to track anything down by them,great songs though,and the Church I’ve known about for many years as well,Metropolis was the first song I ever heard by them,btw The Byrd’s Turn Turn Turn is really the first ever jangle pop song I heard which was back in grade school(3rd grade I believe)..fascinating video looking forward to part 2!
Hey there! I, too found out about jangle pop in the early or mid-2000s when I was getting into Big Star, the dB's, etc! Sitting Still is a favorite of mine, too! Yep Roc reissued the Soft Boys' two LPs. It's hard to find originals of those, so I'm happy with the reissues and they are pretty affordable, too! Saw the Church back in 2017 and I believe they performed Metropolis live. What a great tune! Glad you'll be back for part 2! Jangle pop forever!
I finally have found a channel that resonates with me and the musical taste I enjoy! Great video, have heard of some of the bands, others (while a twee pop fan myself), I've yet to check out! Subscribed. Since the pandemic began, I've been also getting back into collecting records, but also had to resort to eBay for some certain LPs (either because Out Of Print or not sold at my local record store). Hurts the bank account as far as shipping is concerned...
Not sure if you've heard of The Bats, but their 1990 album "The Law Of Things" is a great indie pop LP, as is their '87 album "Daddy's Highway".

I hear you on resorting to Ebay for a lot of records. I've utilized them tons lately. Especially for 80s post punk and alternative records that are just hard to find in general!

I finally got to see The Soft Boys on their two reunion tours in NYC around 2001-2002, both amazing shows. They did "Rock and Roll Toilet," of course.
No doubt seeing those Soft Boys reunion tours were killer! I'm totally jealous!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert The more I think about it, I wish they'd filmed at least one of the key shows on those tours, and put out a DVD of it, or whatever. I hope they did, and that will someday see release. I guess it just costs a ton to film a show properly these days and mix it for a proper release.I was just overjoyed to have seen one of them, never though they'd do a reunion. I also saw both nights of Bauhaus in 1998 here in NYC, that was insane.

I don’t know if they would count as being in the same category as Jangle Pop, but Echo and the Bunnymen make a lot of amazing music, and they have some great 12 String songs on a few of their albums. Their guitar player uses a very sexy Vox Teardrop 12 string which has a bigsby vibrato and it has a haunting effect.
If you haven’t already heard it, you might get serious goosebumps from their album “Ocean Rain”. They have a self titled album which is more upbeat but also a very strong album full of Jangly 12 strings.
Oh crap… you just mentioned them like 13 minutes in! Whatever, great videos and thanks for sharing Close Lobsters with me. I’d heard of them but haven’t dug into their music.
If they themselves don't, Chameleons (UK or otherwise) is better described as inside the genre than out. Boomtown Rats as one of our 'proto-hero bands', or as where the genre evolved from?
Not sure if you mentioned The Connells yet. Another late 80's southern jangle pop band produced by Mitch Easter and Hugh Jones. Good stuff.

Well you know I've been trying to understand what the heck you are saying by jangle pop so this is definitely helpful! I wrote down many of these albums to check out so I'll have to report back once I give some a listen. The list of albums to check out always just keeps growing, lol! I know REM well and I have heard a song or two from the Smiths in passing but that's it. I didn't know they were jangle pop but at least with REM I can see it! I like how this channel takes such a detailed look at genres- some bands stay in one lane- others are harder to pin down even during the same album or song- artists that genre jump a lot risk audience alienation for their artistic vision- anyway i always learn something new on here :)

The Byrds are simply amazing. Loved buying the remasters of all their albums with bonus material on CD. Bonus material included the band arguing with each other in the studio whilst recording one of their songs! The daggers were out that day! David Crosby was my favourite member and loved all his songs for the band. One of the bonus tracks is a controversial song written by David Crosby called Triad, apparently recorded under protest by the rest of the band as it's about a menage a trois! It sounds beautiful and David sings beautifully on it. David Crosby's first solo album called "If only I can remember my name" is a masterpiece and one of my all time favourites. Naturally I loved him in Crosby, Stills and Nash. An epic band. Basically anything Crosby did was pure gold. 😊
The Three O Clock when they were called Salvation Army! Good Paisley underground band that were influenced by 60s garage and psych pop! Good taste!!!

A very interesting and informative video. Lots of stuff I am unaware of (Springfields, The Bats) and I will check them out. I agree with the Byrds but I think The Searchers were the first jangle band, they played Rickenbackers and Roger McGuinn was very influenced by them and they are still very underrated. (They have just retired). The Beau Brummels were a great jangle band. I saw the Soft Boys many times they were part of the British Pub Rock scene (another genre). I am extremely impressed that you are into The Barracudas, what LP Drop Out is. I have got most of the Go-Betweens and Felt's early 45's and LP's, getting pricey now. So much music that you are into, its very impressive. I am looking forward to the next instalment of Jangle Pop.. You might mention this band, Teenage Fanclub. Take care. Gary
Hi Gary. I mentioned the Searchers as being an early influencer. I think you may have missed that bit. Have been meaning to sample the Beau Brummels. Oh yeah, I can't believe how much both CDs and vinyl from the Go-Betweens and Felt are. It's unbelievable. Luckily there are Felt vinyl reissues. There is a Go-Betweens box set, but it's well over $200. I featured Teenage Fanclub in my power pop video. I have quite the affinity for them! They're definitely both power pop and jangle pop! I always loved that Byrds-y sound. I consider myself to be knowledgeable about music. I have a very large record/CD collection. And yet, most of these bands I never heard of. When I was younger I used to love to discover bands that I never heard before on the radio back in the 70s. Well watching this video exposed me to a lot of bands that sound very interesting to me. Just when I thought I knew about most bands, I discover more. Thanks for that. (I should add that the first concert I ever went to was The Byrds back in 1971 just after Untitled came out.)

Another great episode, man, those jangly bands from the early to mid 80's were the driving force for my taste in music. Especially The Church...Tear It All Away from their first album is the ultimate Church jangle for me. Nice to hear The Go Betweens get some love. Steve Kilbey and Grant. did a lot of work together and had a side project known as Jack Frost, if you didn't know this already of course. Have you heardFor Against before? Very jangly Nebraska band..great stuff.

I'm 72 years old and have been listening / collecting / seeing live bands, since I was 10 years old (1958). I did a radio program in the 80's (on a California public radio station) which I originally was going to call "The Jingle Jangle Jungle" but eventually named it "Subterranean Dreams" cause I didn't want to limit the scope of my musical interests... I especially love all varieties of PSYCHEDELIA, and punk, post-punk, techno pop, and space-rock. Looking forward to pt.2 of this topic. Love all those bands, and the cross between Jangle Pop and Power Pop. I get into most of them by reading interviews on magazines like Alternative Press or Guitar World from bands like Cheap Trick, R.E.M., Sonic Youth, Johnny Marr (The Smiths), Mike Watt (Minutemen), Henry Rollins (Black Flag/Rollins Band), Nirvana, The Smashing Pumpkins, etc, where they mentioned The Byrds, Yellow Balloon, Robyn Hitchcock/The Soft Boys, Sagittarius, Big Star, XTC, The Shoes, The Raspberries, The Primitives, The Vaselines, The Go-Betweens, Divinyls, The Sundays, etc.
"The Jazz Butcher" one of their best albums I can recommend was released in (1986) with the title: ("Distressed Gentlefolk") //R.
Love this video. IMO the ultimate JP song is “Feel A Whole Lot Better” by the Byrds...I first heard it on Full Moon Fever by TP and then when the Gin Blossoms Covered it at The R&R HOF Concert. Im not a big deep cut guy on this stuff but Im hoping The Blossoms and Pretenders and Hoff/Sweet cover albums make the cut in the next one! MORE REM!

Havent heard of "Babes" in forever! Met Lori Barbero in Minneapolis shopping for albums in 1990 & chatted awhile. She never mentioned being in a band & I only found out later when my friend with me there told me as we were leaving.

Hi Hanna ! , No doubt REM & The Smiths flew the flag with their brilliance but The Church were probably the best. They did score a much deserved hit with 🌟 🐟. Their Best Album "Seance " never got a proper 🇺🇸 release. On one album " Flesh & Blood " Roxy Music went " jangle " even covering " 8 miles High " Keep an eye out in the budget bins for " Rough Night In Jericho " by Dreams So Real. They were from Athens , GA like REM. Lost classic. Hope to 👀 Lloyd Cole in part 2 ! 😎. See Ya Hanna 😃

Roger McGuinn and Johnny Marr smacked the Hardcore Punk out of me. Speaking of Punk, there's been a rise of Jangle/Shoegaze popularity among the Midwest Hardcore/Emo scene. When you got the chance, I highly suggest listening to *Peripheral Vision* by the band *Turnover* or *Hyperview* by the band *Title Fight* .
On another note, I just wanna say that you look gorgeous ma'am. Coming from a guy born in 99'. 😂
I have heard a few tunes by Title Fight but I'm just not really able to get into emo in any form or variation. I'll check Turnover. And haha, thank you for the compliment! I guess I am 16 years older than you! Hehe! Cheers!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert Yeah, I wasn't much of an Emo fan either, in its' traditional sense at least. It actually caught me by surprise how Turnover's album was even labeled as "Emo", since it sounded more akin to something by Riverside or The Stone Roses. And also since I found their songs due to autoplay via The Field Mice.
Another great video. As usual you mentioned a ton of stuff I love, a few that I liked way back when, but had forgotten about & haven't played in decades. Some digging out of old CDs to be done again - and a recent band I wasn't aware of - The Stroppies.
There's a great double CD by Grant McLennan, 'Horsebreaker Star' (1994) which was easily available really cheap in the UK in the late 90s. Nice to see The Chills mentioned.
I've always been a huge fan of Robyn Hitchcock. I picked up a signed Church CD Single from somewhere and I think I have most of their albums.
The Clean interested me. I thought, hang on, what's she talking about? They were a post punk hardcore band. When I checked I found I was mixing them up with another Kiwi band called The Clear, who eventually morphed into Lung.
I shall now go search for my Let's Active, Felt & Barracudas CDs.
I recently discovered a radio station out of Seattle (KEXP) that posts live sessions on RUclips & found they had bands like Slowdive, Swervedriver & Hatchie on there. Cool stuff. I also discovered a UK band I didn't know, called Hælos - sort of Leftfield Trip-Hoppy stuff, with some dream-pop elements. Excellent. Quite how I had to find out about a UK band from an American radio station I don't know, but there you go.

@@TheOmahaIntrovert As I've mentioned before, I can not recommend this Aussie label highly enough. They didn't just release Australian artists, but most were I think. While I don't have everything they released, I do have quite a lot of them & have yet to hear one I didn't like.

It’s refreshing to hear a female perspective of the “jangle pop” genre. That said, as much as I love the Soft Boys and Go-Betweens I don’t consider them “jangle pop”, bands, even if they have some songs that fit that description. I will give you props for mentioning obscure bands like the Barracudas, Close Lobsters and Felt, although Felt's music, however jangly, isn't very melodic. FYI to me, The Church define the jangly guitar sound for most of the ‘80’s, at least for their first five albums, although, R.E.M. is undoubtably the most influential band of that era.

Apparently Roger McGuinn put the Rickenbacker 360/12 through a wall of compression and limiter equipment in the studio, still not sure how he tackled that live, since there weren't
compression pedals etc., back then. The compression and limiting gives his Ricky that extra high end, chiming ringing ultra-sustain sound. The 360/12 already sounds that way
on its own, but treating it this way gave the band its distinctive sound. I also recently read that The Beatles used tons of the same compressors and limiters on their albums. I have
a 12-string ac. electric, but not a Rickenbacker, I picked up a compression pedal recently, it definitely helps gives the 12-string a good top boost, and more sustain, even if it doesn't quite
sound like The Byrds' treatment of it. You can even now buy the JangleBox pedal that McGuinn helped design, gives a Ricky that Byrds sound, but it costs $300.
Well that pedal is pretty badass, I'm sure. I didn't even know it existed! All I'm playing right now is my Taylor acoustic and I bought a Squier Paranormal Series Super-Sonic last summer. Was what I could afford and it's nice to at least be able to play an electric again. Down the road I hope to own a 12-string!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert I didn't know of it until a few weeks ago. It's expensive. If you need a Byrds sound, it's a must though. Although a good compression pedal will get you close. Taylors are darned good guitars, in fact, I know both Elliott Murphy and Bob Perry of Winter Hours both told me they love the Taylors. I think Elliott even endorses them. They're very playable and they also make baby Taylors for those of us with smaller hands. the 12-string is fantastic, what's not is having to put a whole new set of strings on it! But i just take my time and usually it's ok.

This is great, you almost did a documentary about Jangle Pop ¡ I love to sort my music by genres but this one is a little difficult for me cause those artits are all over the place in my record collection. Records from the most well known artists you showed like REM, Smiths, Robyn Hitchcock and The Church I have them as Post-punk. The Byrds I have them as Psych and Tom Petty as Jangle Pop. I dont have the records you showed from the more obscure artists, but you could argue some of the more iconic bands from the Latin Rock genre like early Heroes del Silencio or Caifanes have exactly that jangly ringing sound.

Other favorites, kind of jangle are Fobia and Babasónicos but Babasónicos are more psych. If you check all those bands Im pretty sure you'll find their singers to be pretty good looking. I mean all of them drive the girls crazy down here in Latin America ¡ lol

In terms of the Underwater Moonlight Yep Roc reissue, I personally heard on Discogs that it wasn't very good so I'm not sure about getting it, but I do really want a copy of that LP and the other pressings are very rare.

The best Go-Betweens album (imho) is “Tallulah.” It's worth buying for the song “Bye Bye Pride” alone. If that song doesn't stir your emotions you should check your pulse!
