I don't pay them any attention. They don't get it and that's ok. There are plenty of people like me who are fully aware that Koko was not just signing but understood spoken English. You could tell just watching these videos that there was an interaction that probably no animal had ever had with human beings (and not with just Penny). Koko was very special. I think she became even more human due to her human mother raising her. There will never be anything like it. I've watched other videos of either wild gorillas or gorillas in captivity. There is simply no comparison in their behavior.
@@terrellrobinson3286 That’s your opinion only,,, I agree 100 percent she didn’t talk like we as humans do because she or none of her ancestors had the choice of a voice, so she did talk like saying yes I would like to eat no she didn’t,,but more like a toddler would hold a conversation. I just wished Penny would have found out more about the gorilla way of life. This way we don’t have to guess what they are doing and why.

As you mentioned she is incapable of producing human speech therefore she could not talk. The definition of "talk" is _speak in order to give information or express ideas or feelings; converse or communicate by spoken words_ ...Koko could not do that. She could somewhat communicate but not nearly as much as Penny Patterson likes to claim she could! The reason people feel Koko is special is due to her being humanized, or like you mentioned the fact that the was raised by humans. She was no more intelligent than any other gorilla is. I feel bad that so many of you have been so badly misled by Penny Patterson and that y'all truly want to believe that all the claims she has made about Koko were true however regretfully she has not been honest about Koko's abilities and she is a fraud in several different ways. As an animal behaviorist/ethologist for over 25 years it saddens me that she also did not provide the 3 gorillas in her custody the best care nor did she put their needs as gorillas first. None of the 3 were in very good health and that was a result of her feeding them a terrible diet that lacked much of the nutrients gorillas require and because she kept them indoors in a relatively small space (for a gorilla) and they were not able to get the exercise they should have. They were never allowed to just act like a gorilla. After the very first time that Koko was introduced to the males they were never again allowed to even be near enough to each to communicate or have any interactions whatsoever. Now this is simply my opinion but I believe that the reason Penny would not allow them to be around each other was because she knew they would want to interact with each other and that woukd interfere with her relationship with koko (and that's not based solely on my opinion but was also stated by many of the people who worked for her who cared for the 3 gorillas). I could write 10 pages explaining all of the things she has lied about and the things she did that was so wrong but I wont however I woukd be more than happy to answer any questions anyone might have and will provide proof to back up any of claims!
Here is one example of why people say she did not actually know as much as Penny claimed. Watch carefully in this video. When Penny says ear you see koko point to or touch her ear. When Penny says "fruit" Koko does the exact same thing that she did when she said "ear"! The sign for fruit is not even close to that but yet Penny says "good" and implies that she got it right....and that what she is notorious for doing and you can see it in the majority of their videos...she would claim she was correct when she wasn't even close. Also when Koko would sign something that had nothing to do with what she was supposed to sign Penny would make ridiculous excuses and say oh she really meant this or that. It is extremely obvious that koko doesn't know even a fraction of what is claimed!
Does anyone recall if Penny ever discussed with Koko what happened to her natural mother? I did a quick Google search and didn't find anything. Just wondering about this.
Even animals like cats and dogs show all these emotions and embarrassment. Cat even plot revenge. Dogs and cats now are using the buttons with words to communicate.
