I'm not British, but I have nothing but admiration for this kind of sheer style. It is the product of a thousand years of history and can only be emulated by other nations.
There was a time when the globe, being coloured red over much of it, was run competently and efficiently by anyone's standards, by clever, thoroughly decent men, British men, right there in London's Whitehall.... from the War Office..........a time when foreign troublemakers knew their place, and the otherly hued were being charitably delivered from their benightedness into the Christian light. If I cast my mind back, it's been that way since Sitting Bull appeared to tally wampum and doff his war bonnet to the Great White Mother. Can't imagine that anything has changed since. This is astonishing. It is just mind boggling how a field of that many musicians can all sound so amazingly in tune and also stay synchronized across such a piece of "moving acreage". I play massed pipes and drums all the time and the huge groups I've played in never approach this kind of synchronization or tuning. Wow.
@BugMagnet After living in Germany for the last 4 years, I can safely assure you that you have much to be very proud about in your homeland. A stunning, beautiful country, second to none in my opinion.
I remember doing this gig with the Junior Band of the Kings Div, as a cornet player. Its such a shame that we wont ever see bands as big or as good as this anymore due to "evolution!" We definately saw the best years!!!!!!

Ah, the good old Red Cloak. Brings back memories. Probably the best part of 2000 musicians marching here. Amazing. Going out to Europe United, (Willie Zell.)
That is a very spectacular display even though I wasn't born that year, my brother was, I was born 3 years later in 1986. I'm absolutely amazed by this just to show how many military bands took part in this display at Wembley. This shows how great and proud it is to be British this way. What a great video, I love this and I love it to bits.
I remember this well. It's the half time entertainment at the 1966 World Cup final at Wembley. After West Germany took a seemingly unassailable 17-0 lead into the dressing room this rousing spectacle (and an astute switch by master tactician Sir Alf Dambuster, sending misfiring centre forward Gordon Banks into goal and moving goalie Bobby Charlton into midfield), inspired England to win the second half by 4 goals to minus 15, including a hat-trick by substitute World Cup Willy. And who could forget the immortal words of the referee "They think it's all over the line" or the reply of his Russian linesman "It fucking is now!"
I'm Aerican and love to be a part of cold stream band are any British Band outstanding! The Brit's know how to get it done!. they are the best of the best!.
As an ex military musician, I would love to see a video of the silver jubilee pageant I took part in. At that time, the biggest gathering of British military musicians ever. Happy days but never the like again
keeping time in an environment like that is an absolute nightmare, the echo from the stadium throws everyone off, so bloody well done to these guys for holding it all together, especially on that scale. When playing outside there is always the temptation to speed up, for no apparent reason, much to the MDs annoyance :p
Historically all the participating bands are from the British Army. As far as I know we were the only bands from Canada to ever take part in the tattoo. There was my band, the pipes and drums and brass reed of the 48th Highlanders of Canada, and the Toronto Scottish pipes and drums. The only time a non army band took part was for the Queen's Silver Jubilee. The Royal Marines were in the show that year.
The Union Jack shown has all three crosses (St. George-England, St. Andrew-Scotland and St. Patrick-Ireland) so ALL of the UK were representated. At the other end of the pitch was the Canadian flag (didn't get on this clip but was in full tattoo). This tattoo also had more Commonwealth Countries marching too. Canadians, Gurkhas etc. A MUST SEE in it's entirity...
Victor, Good luck trying to find me in the cast. I am wearing a scarlet tunic and bearskin. I am with the Band of the Royal Regiment of Canada. One of four first time Canadian band taking part in that year's show.
all of the bands here are british army..corps,infantry,cavalry...the band of the royal regiment of canada was also present in this part of the display..the helmets you see are home pattern helmets worn by the line infantry battalions and the REME i think..i was in the audience..the first and only time i saw the wembly pageant ...1981...marty
Don't you think that's the other way around in view of WW1 and WW2? Without the USA England would have been TOAST. Sorry to point out a rather inconvenient truth.
SpeedyNeutrino172 United Kingdom fought WW1, not solely England. 9/10 British and commonwealth forces who went to the western front came home, whereas 3/4 Scots who went to the western front never came home. To Justin47sway... Are you kidding me. Did you actually just try to say that the dressing is not good. What are they, like 65 across and 60 or so back. This is nuts. I play in a Mil Band and it's not easy to stay in line with even so much as 14 across let alone 65. This video is amazing and British Mil Band are amazing no matter how you put it. Thanks to the Government’s defence cuts you will never see such a marvellous sight in modern Britain, I wish one of the major parties would stand up for properly funding our military as 30 years of cuts are starting to show “just enough funding” is not enough, the Army, Navy and Air Force are not just our defenders they are part of our very culture, I remember even just 30 years ago that seeing troops walking around the streets was common and regular anywhere in the UK, now it’s a rare sight unless you live near a large garrison. Bring back the local regiments, bring back the red tunics and ceremonial pith helmets, bring back our ships. God bless our armed forces.
Just a thought. There are circa 1300 troops on parade here and that looks a lot . But the British Army lost 19,240 dead on the first day of The Battle of the Somme, nearly 15x as many as are marching here.
Now I have a little problem with this one, because I can't remember coming back from Osnabruck to play at Wembley in either 78 or 79. 3 Para went to Germany in 77 and I'm pretty sure I is in this mess somewhere.
