Should I Buy or Build a Workbench?

  • In this video I'll go over my thoughts on whether I should build or buy a woodworking work bench along with the current benches in our shop. We ended up getting two Kreg Jig Universal Benches which looked the best and were relatively affordable. I priced out the materials for a nice traditional workbench with a vice and the price of materials was just over $1000 not including any of my time in building or planning! Let me know down below what you have done recently to upgrade your shop, it's quite difficult to upgrade things especially with lumber prices today!

    Good video. We modified a husky bent his for my dad - I actually bought two butcher block tops from a big box and glued them together for additional weight. It was way cheaper than buying maple, milling it, gluing it, and planing to dead flat. Thanks for the videos….I’d like to see more on finishing techniques in a production scale environment if possible. Nice work.

  • @sportstertaco

    I built my own. It was free because I have sourced a lot of construction lumber from the trash. The top is made from an epoxy bowling alley slab of heaviness. So if you are patient and don't mind going through trash you can create one relatively cheap.

    I built my first 2 benches and slapped a bench together for my CNC. I made my router table from a Kreg bench. I really would love to have time to devote to a proper outfeed table and CNC bench but the jobs just keep coming. I'll probably buy another Kreg bench though.

    I have had the plastic legs on my journeyman table for over 1 year now, they work just fine however I prob would get the kreg bench if I did choose again. Lumber is not cheap and it does still require you to build the table to your dimension with the plastic legs which I do like over putting together metal pieces for a certain sized bench, you get to usea few more tools maybe with the plastic legs but both would require cutting.

    • @TwoMooseDesign
      @TwoMooseDesign  Год назад +1

      I haven’t tried the plastic ones, I like the kreg benches. Quick and easy! I’d love to build a traditional bench but I just don’t want to spend that much on lumber or have the time right now

  • @josephharrington3530

    Just found your channel...curious why you didn't build a custom work bench. someone once said it would improve your skills and give you something to be super proud of. IMHO, woodworkers/makers should build there own work benches...this way they can customize to their needs....with drawers, cabinets, ect.

    • @TwoMooseDesign
      @TwoMooseDesign  2 года назад

      I just don’t have time to make one. It would take me a week of planning and building to get it perfect. Until I have time or a desire to make one a universal bench is a great option 🤷🏼‍♂️ I think people should build a bench if they want to improve their skills or just for a fun project.

      Kreg offers wheels, they are actually better and cheaper than the ones i bought. I didnt know they offered wheels until I got everything for the first bench. The blue ones look better but the locking feature on them is pretty disappointing. I wouldnt spend $80 on them if i had to buy again. i think the kreg wheels are closer to $50????
