    Update! I heard back from the Juno team today! Some members of the team have examined the prospect of implementing a test of the Jovoscope concept described in the video. However the current orbit will not provide an instance of an apojove-Jupiter-Earth alignment. As it stands, they consider it too high risk to change the orbit in order to ensure they can complete their extended mission objectives. I don’t know how locked in this position is but as of right now it looks unlikely that Juno will attempt this.

    • @PaperTools
      @PaperTools 5 лет назад +3

      Is there a public contact which fans of the jovoscope concept can write to in support of exploring the possibility of doing the test? Do you know what the minimum burn would be to migrate to an opportune orbit? IOW, would we be asking to use a lot of fuel or a little? What about towards the end of Juno's mission as you suggested?

      Create a gofundme page to make a satellite capable of testing this theory. I would donate and im sure others would too. Maybe if you name it the Muskinator Elon would launch it for free 😁

      A bit disappointed that they weren't able to attempt it. Can only imagine the ramifications of it actually working for Juno & all future missions..

    • @JosePineda-cy6om
      @JosePineda-cy6om 4 года назад +12

      They could try an orbit maneuver to align Jupiter with Earth at the end of the mission. Once Juno is going down for its final big splash, it could be broadcasting in a lot of different wavelengths continuously from its apojove (~8million Km) up to the very point it crashes - that way the exact focal point would be experimentally determined, as well as the exact amplification factor and if there's any absorbtion by Jupiter's atmosphere it would show as well

    I have not been educated as a gipsy.
    As a dutch citizen my parents dint find it importand enough and thus i learned writing dutch and english myself wich took me a long time.
    My entire life ( 40 years now ) i looked at the sky and was always intrigued by its incredible scale.
    Since youtube became a replacement for me for my boring TV and where discovery / animal planet always repeats the same programs year after year i got hooked to everything related to the universe.
    I have watched thousands of hours worth of contend after i come home from work.
    I subbed to tons of channels where most use very low quality video's like 240p / 360p but i just cant stop watching these video's as it intrigues me so much i just got hooked to it.

    Considering Juno was designed with such a low bandwidth in mind, does it even have the storage capability to "live stream"? I mean, it couldn't actually live stream because it can only transmit at a specific point in its orbit, so it would need to store all of its footage for transmission, so how much video could it store in its hard drives? could its cameras even record video?

    Good idea. I see the main limiting factor being the effort in placing spacecraft in the correct location to transmit these signals. I'd imagine the volume the spacecraft must be in to "aim" the signal at Earth is pretty small, and it likely does not have the fuel to make such a manoeuvre. Even if it did, the spacecraft will only be in the correct location for a short period of time then it'd need to wait a whole orbit (plus another manoeuvre to adjust for the planets moving) to be in the sweet spot for sending another signal.

    Hmm, I see a tiny problem with test.
    Juno's orbit would align with Jupiter and the Earth in that specific configuration for a very brief interval so the 53 Mb/s download speed would be very short lived. You wouldn't be able to live stream for long since the connection would revert back to the low speed very quickly.
    The best use of this would be to download higher resolution sensory readings stored on the spacecraft's data banks.
    btw, you should talk to Elon Musk about this idea. He'll probably send a Tesla sedan to test it out.

    • @dwaynepipe300
      @dwaynepipe300 4 года назад +1

      The test is to see if it is possible in the first place. And if it comes back with a good result, then future tests may involve sending multiple satellites so they can bounce there signals and have a constant stream.

      Starlink is too close but the ion engine might have enough deltaV to reach the orbit needed. They are cheap, SpaceX is mass producing them and so far they are doing tests without the laser communications so they may not mind sending one into the orbit required. Something really cool would be fitting one starlink with a receiver suitable for new horizons. If it worked they could pitch communication missions to space agencies and make a killing and it would be quite useful for them to communicate with mars.

    The noise ratio and broadcast power might be increased, but there is still the distance factor. It takes over a minute for a signal to reach Mars from Earth at it's closest point. Jupiter, at it's closest point is FAR FAR further. Hours would be needed for a one way signal to reach it's target. Live Streaming is out of the question. You still couldn't have instantaneous communication. You couldn't just open your web browser and start streaming NetFlix or RUclips videos. Each click would take hours to send data to the target and then hours more for the targets information to get back to you. Yes, you could send higher resolution images, video's and such, but don't even start on the LIVE STREAMING crap. At those distances, being limited by the Speed of Light, instantaneous communication(live streaming) is just not possible. That is, until we figure out a way around the laws of physics as we know them.

    I'm curious about the feasibility of creating an inflatable artificial atmospheric lens. It could be launched separately from a probe then positioned in exactly the right spot between the probe and the earth to maximize the lenzing effects. How big would and inflatable artificial atmospheric lens need to be, in order to be effective? We could control the atmospheric composition to make it as transmissive as possible to the exact frequencies in which we're interested. Could we control the scale height of the atmosphere? Would your technique work with a smaller, perfectly placed, artificial "planet" with a perfect atmosphere, or will it only work with very large objects?

    If this is true, then Europa Clipper and JUICE could transmit so much more detailed photos of Europa, Ganymede and Callisto in 2030. Contact mission managers for those missions via Email, they would love the idea and could implement it into planning, or atleast check if their planned oribits fit the Jovascope configurations

    Another interesting question is this: can we detect if our solar system bodies are being used as transmission relays between stars? How do we peek into an hypothetical existing channel without knowing what the focal points are?

    if your project actually works, and I do not doubt it will, you will end up on the histrory books as one of the greatest people that contributed to make humankind a multiplanetary species, as much as Elon Musk I would say

    If NASA does use your idea and it works, there might be a Nobel Prize in your future.

    great stuff. i really like that you've elaborated from your terrascope idea (great on its own) and thought of simillar things. i really think there is something here.

    Keep going. And stay stoic. What you are doing has great value in many ways. It is inspirational and feeds the human sense of wonder, it could also transform how we might communicate in the future. The original terrascope idea is thrilling to me.

    It's impossible to not get crappy and expensive Internet services from someone other than Xfinity/Comcast where I live so I'm not holding my breath that this type of Internet will ever be build by humans.

    Dialup speeds were 56Kbps not 250Kbps. ISDN or DSL would be more accurate.
    I enjoy your videos and ideas.

    Hi Dr. Kipping. Just saw your interview with Frasier Cain. Don't worry about the haters, man. As an attorney, I work in a conservative profession as well. I'm sure the Coolworlds fans have your back. You're going be able to the crowdfund some cool stuff if you ever need to, and the haters won't be able to. So keep up the outreach. And you never know what big science philanthropist might be watching.
