- Quick walk around video of my '72 Shovelhead. I wanted to put together a clean, simple cruiser. I'm pretty happy with the result. The bike has been fun in this form but i'm tearing this bike apart and taking it in a completely different direction over the winter. Stay tuned for the build videos to come!
Mine is 74 flh .my grandfather gave it to me when he past. That was the newest bike he ever had. I was 5yr old, now im 37. Love the sound!
Thats awesome man !
You inherited a motorcycle when you were 5 years old? That's wild! Sorry for your loss.
Words cannot describe how beautiful this bike is
Thank you!
This is pretty much the perfect style for a shovelhead FLH....every single piece seems to flow and compliment the whole. Well done, sir.
Damn it! I told myself not to watch this.. I am 70 with the back and hips of a 120 year old miner.. I had to give up my bike years back and I ache to ride again.. now I am gonna go and lick my wounds and remember all those years of fun since I built my first bike out of a lawn mower engine and an old bike frame in 63.. (no brakes either.. kids!) thanks brother for the share and the memories..
No problem man! I appreciate you chiming in! Glad it brought back memories
I had same exact bike purchased from a police auction in New York. It had 900 miles on it and wrecked when I bought it. I rebuilt that bike in 1974 and rode it hard/fast for 15 years. It had standard police hand shift and foot clutch and I LOVED IT. This was my best Harley bay far, but I did not realize it until I sold it. The guy I sold it to drove it 10 months a year [this is heavy snow country / lake effect snow for two solid months per year.....I would see my baby being driven by another numerous times per year. The guy would never sell it back to me and I lost track of him...I did witness him drive that bike at least another 15+ years allover town. You have done a great job with yours...bare bones basic with some great improvements. BRAVO! Paul Clapper, Syracuse, NY
Thanks man. Very cool story too, its neat to hear from people who owned old cars/bikes back in the day. Tons of stories to be told
Gotta love it. The essence of simplicity and class.
Thanks! I appreciate it
Bro... This bike is BADASS! I keep coming back to this video and checking it out. It's funny how the simple things can bring so much joy! I've been working on an '81 basket case this summer with my son and I must admit... this bike has been a big influence in what we are doing with it.
Dude thats awesome to hear, glad to provide some inspiration man! Also thanks for the kind words , i appreciate it. Throw up a video of yours when its done or send some pics !
That bike sounds so good. Literal music to my ears.
Nice looking ride . Great job. 👍
Thank ya
Sweet ! I've got a 79 ' FXEF. bad back, for sale .Had it since 1990.
That’s my old bike. I owned it from 1992-2005. I painted it the PPG Black and put the gas tank emblem ( which is not a 72 ) .. very cool to see it again😊. Sold it to a guy named Damon. Anyway....hello from Louisiana!!!
You sure ? The black is original, i changed the fenders and resprayed them myself. The bike didnt look like this when i got it. Also, the emblem thing is interesting to me because its a 66-71 emblem but ive seen numerous 72’s with those emblems. A few sources online suggested it was the early 72’s that had the earlier style emblems before they switched to the amf style badge. Thanks for the reply though! That would be cool if this is the same bike
@@_Shanespencer_ man, what caught my eye was the tank, and the big headlight I put on there...of course it may be a another bike. It’s just that a few things stuck out ( including some wiring) .. does it look like the tank was coated on the inside and never really sealed up right? Also if memory serves me correct. It seems the pistons may have a 60 on them... I believe I have a old pic of the bike I’ll send, and what it looked like when I had it. My email ( just gonna leave this up for a day or two so that I won’t get bombarded with emails lol. ) ... either way, would love to see what you do with it!
@@blake8580 ill shoot you an email!
@@blake8580 did this end up being your bike?
@@skgate man, we emailed each other, I could only come up with one pic. He checked it out and said he didn’t believe it was. idk, maybe it was wishful thinking on my part. I wish there was some way to track it thru the DMV. Either way…….he’s seemed to be a good dude. ✌️😎
Man, that thing started better than 99% of new bikes!
Really digging this bike. Can't pin down one specific thing, but it all goes together perfectly. Well done.
Thanks man. Appreciate it
Hammered the hell out of the roads on the very same model bike when it was new and fresh riding with some extremely serious guys years ago. Thank you for the memories good and bad. Lol!
I have a 78 flh and I love that thing! Working on it or riding doesn't matter just fuckin love it!
Agreed man. Older stuff just has so much soul
that is an amazing bike, brother!
Thanks !
Sounds awesome! Nothing like the shovel sound.
Classic sound
My favourite Stance and style. Spot on mate, spot on.
Beautiful bike !
Thanks 🍻
That's a beautiful machine. Thanks for sharing
Shane, that is one of the slickest bikes I’ve seen. Very clean and classic.
Thanks man, that was the goal! I wanted a relatively simple and clean cruiser
Sick scoot, looking forward to seeing the rebuild.
Thanks, much appreciated
Man this is definitely my cup of tea .It all put together tastefully.
Thanks man!
Very nice timeless Classic Custom . hello from France .
That is just a great looking scooter, man you did a nice job on that!! Beautiful.
I appreciate it ! Thanks!
sooo cool, wish you all days a good ride... greetings from hamburg, germany
Thanks i appreciate it !
absolute love it, simple clean stylish !!!
Nice one. I wouldn’t do too much to that other than ride it
Cool Bike. Looks great and really like that old style tail light.
Thanks man, i never really see people run them so i thought it would be kinda unique
Damn man that's a beauty. Looking to get my hands on one here in Canada soon !! Cheers
I'm in the middle of restoring mine that I've had since 1980, and videos like this don't help me decide if I want to keep it stock or customize it.
Nice work, nice bike.
Thanks!
Yeah ...being a shovel fan / lover and owner that front end was the first thing that jumped out at me ..nice looking machine my friend.
Thank you! Tried to keep it clean and timeless
Really sharp, hits every note.
Beautiful mate. Love this style. Best there is. Don't need rigid to be stunning.
While I'm partial to rigids, I like a clean swing arm.
This bike is actually going rigid soon, but i agree. Swingarm bikes can be pretty cool
Sick brother I like that seat
Thanks ! Much appreciated
Nice! I own a '71 very similar.
Much CALI-LOVE ✌🏾😎
Appreciate it, thanks !
Very nice Shovelhead. I have a 1968 FLH Shovelhead. Just subscribed to your channel.
Thank you, and thats awesome man! Those old pan shovels are cool as hell
Beautiful!!
i have a 1980 since new with regular 16" wheels, yours looks cool with the custom wheel. i have shorty duals muffled and a kingsize windshield. kinda almost the same bike but different.
That is a cool bike..hi from down -under
Thanks man!
Beautiful Bike!!!..I have a 72 FX.
Thanks! N thats awesome, dont see em around often
Beautiful!
Bad ASS bro,. Always liked that look ,even with pull back drag bars , the sled is always sleeck
Very sweet and sounds fantastic…👍
Thanks, she runs pretty solid
Sorry forget my last comment. I thought it was "pretty Stock" like you said, but it clearly is not.. at all
Sweet ride
Absolutely beautiful
I appreciate it thanks
I'm more into european motorcycle, but this one Harley is gorgeous !
Awesome !!
The same style I'd build.
Beautiful bike, u lucky man
Killer bike!
Basically my dream bike. Very nice!
Thanks ! Appreciate it
@@_Shanespencer_ its been 5 months since you said you were getting ready to "strip it down". What's the new status lol?
@@yankeeapple5615 i started tearing it apart about an hour after this was filmed haha. I currently have the frame, engine, trans and some other misc parts left. The rest of the parts were sold.
@@_Shanespencer_ wow, not the reply I was expecting. I thought you were tearing it down to paint or something.
Got a '79 FLH. Been slimming it down a bit by removing the windshield, spot lamps, crash bars, etc. The hand controls are on my radar now
Nice! Sounds like a good start!
I love the BMX grips bro
Thanks dude
Dam thats all class. Definitely not over done, but its missing absolutely nothing.
I appreciate that man, thats what im goin for
Very nice.
I dig the way it’s set up. I envision a Shovel in my mind similar to yours, I like the nacelle,no turn signals and early style swingarm. You did the bike justice by putting a front drum brake because the stock front banana caliper is just plain fugly ! Those front drum brakes look nice but they don’t stop worth a shit. I know because I have the same front drum brake on my chopped Shovel.
Thanks man, i totally agree. The stock caliper is ugly as hell, the pan front drum looked killer but once i got it on i never even used it because it stopped so horribly hahah. The bikes not gonna have a front brake after its redone
Perfect!
supercool and clean ......!!
Thanks!
Looks good.
Lucky ...... Take care of it. Nice
Sooooo sweet
Nice bike
Dude love your bike my second bike at 20 was 72 FLH I got ape hangers and I love them other than that it's stock. Old guy at rolling thunder got shitty with coz my tags say AMF-JUNK he said had it ever left you on side road? I said more time than I can count. Truth be told it's left me on side road twice in 38 yrs not bad. But 2 yrs after got it tore it down came back up gaskets seals everything but motor. Didn't need it. But I'm getting ready put 5 speed in it. I can't take hauling ass with friends on new bike it was cool at first only one I rode with was my lady. Found out cousin has 1938 that runs takes good care of his shit. Too old to ride so he said only 10 more than me. Have great life
That bike is damned near perfect as it sits in my eyes. I currently have a 72 with a 49 pan motor swapped in. It has the skinny front fender but I'm going back to the nacelle and stock fender. Just looks better in my opinion.
Thanks man. Pan sounds rad! I dig the stock nacelle and fender. Im actually gonna be going to a chrome springer once the bikes redone
@@_Shanespencer_ when you get the new springer I'd be interested in your old front end if it doesn't already have a home.
@@ThatGuy-nb7zf already sold. The bike is currently just a frame with engine, trans and primary
Sehr geil!
🏆. What a beaut!!!!
Thank ya !
The feeler gauge set up , from what I'm told is called a Texas Kick Start..... I've had that set up on my 73 for years
Ive never heard that, but thats pretty kickass ! Ill have to remember that
I have 72 as well mine just like but I got crazy apes nice piece
Nice!
Perfect.
I had the 72 flh for almost 30 years punched her out to a 98”
Great bike ride it all over the country finally sold it it in 2000 bought a Roadglide
Yes!
That's what I'm talkin bout.
👏👏👏
Очень крутой мотоцикл! владелец Харли молодец👍⚙️🔩🔧
Nice!!
Thanks !
❤❤❤
Working on a 71 FLH. The info you’ve given has been priceless for me. Trying to figure out what you used and how you mounted that beautiful seat. I’m wanting the same setup. Please enlighten me. Awesome bike!
Thanks! The two threaded bungs at the rear of the seat pan just bolted to some small brackets right in front of the upper shock mount. The front of the seat just slid onto a tab that was mounted into the original seat tube
Nice shovel, seat looks good, would like to know how it's mounted
Class is class. What will you do with it now?
What a sweet old gal.
Sweet bike I like it how it is very nice what size hangers on her
Hey vey nice bike 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼...hope you don’t mind me asking where did you get your handle bars and what kind? And where did you get the seat ? Thank you so much...again very cool bike simple
nice
Got a 76 also…. Chug …Chug …..🚂💨
Hi. Gorgeous bike. It was hard to catch in the video... who made that seat? I would live something domilar for my '76 FLH. Thank so much.
Thank you! Wes at Counterbalancecycles did the seat. Hit him up, great dude and good prices
👍👍👍👍
I have a72 we been together32 years now love her like the first time I saw her. Been all over never left e at side of road proper maintenance says it all you don't like getting dirty or holding a wrench don't get one.
Nothing sounds like a shovel head
Yea man, shovels are probably the coolest sounding twin in my opinion. Really distinct idle
Well put together! Bitchin bike
Great looking bike. How do you have that seat mounted? I just bought a 73 with a mustang seat on it. I am trying to figure out how to attach a modern police seat without the frame that it usually mounts to. Thanks
Theres two little mounts by the top of the shocks, kinda hard to see in the video. The boss where the two rear springs would typically bolt to just sits on a little piece of angle iron on each side. The fron is held down by a piece in the seat tube. I welded a piece of steel shaped like a “T” (think like the top half of an i beam but much smaller), the seat just slides onto that piece to hold the front while the rear is bolted down to keep it all in place
Love the bike, can you give me more information on how it rides with the 12 inch shocks any issues whatsoever looking to do the same with mine, how did you handle the shock eyelets did you convert or did you change out the bushings thank you
The 12” shocks need to have the preload set as tight as they can go so the bike wont bottom out, itll ride a little stiffer compared to stock. Aside from that no issues at all
Thank you for getting back to me, hard to find information, stay safe
@@RickFogel no prob. Likewise 🍻
My fucking goodness my brotha shes beautiful man shes perfect
Thanks man
Killer bike. Is there tape or any insulation on those feeler gauges?
Thanks, and yup there was electrical tape around the edge of it
my 68 FLH has the same front brake and star hub. Stock from the factory . its also shovelhead is my point. The drum brake switches to the right side in 71. Juice drum brake in the rear. That mechanical drum up front is just about useless. Used in tandem with the rear it does however stop a little better. If all else fails engine brake, or make a right turn at the red light LOL!!!
Haha yeahhh that front brake wasnt doing much of anything. Im keeping the juice drum and actually running no front brake once this bike is redone. Honestly that front brake was so bad i never used it; so it was pretty much like riding without one anyway haha
@@_Shanespencer_ it can be tuned. There is a cam you turn on its outside . works kinda sorta? MY 71 has a 68 front end with 2 inch extension. The frame is goosenecked . Its not a chopper though. Has been slammed in the rear with progressive shocks. No light bar. no turn signals. Ugly mustang seat but its soooo comfy I left it. Staggered dual exhaust with baffles in them . Short baffles. Enough richen the mixture and prevent backfiring on decel. Stock juice drum in the rear. Rather large leather bags. I can carry my gym gear . Its been beefed up to 80 inches. The hinged fender is broken. Dont care. its all there just dont lift it up LOL. neutral light dont work. speedo works most of the time. no kill switch so I just turn off the ignition. paint is old and worn. Dont care . she starts right up and takes me where I need to go. big heavy and slow.
Hey guy I really appreciate if you can Tell me part number about then about the seat? Workin on my 75 flh.thanks man really nice bike
Bad ass bike! i heard ya say 21" on the wheel, what width and tire size, that looks perfect.
21x2.15 front wheel with an Avon Speedmaster. 21x3.00 i believe
I have The same bike 72 flh w 21. I have a ton of bikes always go back to my AMF a real ride.
Question for you . Other than the 12" shock in rear how else did you lower it? Thanks in advance for the reply.
Peace..
Thanks man, just 12” shocks out back, and i actually just trimmed the front springs and added preload spacers just like the progressive spring kits have. The preload spacers in that kit are pretty much just sch. 40 PVC. Really simple setup, and i personally dont think the progressive kits are worth the money
@@_Shanespencer_ I agree about the progressive. I had 12s on mine a few years ago but I have side by side dual exhaust on the right and my clearance was shit. I like that 2 into 1. Another question on that. Us that 2 into 1 hanging by itself or did you need to fab a bracket? Do you know what jets are in the super e? I'd like to go back to my 12s and that exhaust looks like the way to do it. Is that the paughco or v twin exhaust? Anyway looks good not sure if you can see my video you might like my bike too!
Hey man am doing a similar build I have a 71. I’m wondering what risers you used to make the 12” bars work? Mine has a solid riser and 2 piece bars
Also am trying to keep the stock riser cover ofcourse. Have a ton of questions lol
Hey! Mine actually had individual risers when i got it. Someone had ditched the stock one piece riser and the bike had 16” apes initially when i bought it. You can just use generic risers from like j&p cycles that are pretty cheap. Just make sure to get the stock/short height ones and they will fit under that riser cover fine !
