- Emily Heaton, Iowa State University Agronomy Professor and Extension Biomass Crop Specialist discusses the benefits and how to grow Miscanthus in Iowa for the Iowa Learning Farms Jan. 14 Virtual Field Day.
What happens if you don’t cut it each winter? Say for a screen or hedge.
It grows mainly from the outside of the root area so it still does fine. Would probably do better if you did cut or burn every few years but not a have to. I have some that hasn't been cut in 5 years and is looking great.
What’s the best fertilizer to make this grow faster and fuller? Thanks
The best thing to do is to do a soil test, then provide nutrition based on the results. Dr. Heaton doesn't recommend any more than 100 units of nitrogen in Iowa. Manure is often a safe bet.

Makes for great deer food plot screening.
