It's really interesting looking at all the little things. His eyes, for example. Very rarely are they fully open, in comparison to her eyes, which are almost always fully open. It gives him the appearance of being tired, or apathetic, both of which are very common traits of depression. Another thing is his hair. He keeps it long and hides his eyes behind it, so he can avoid looking directly at people. The way he acts to keep everyone else at arms length too, it's a way for him to protect himself. The mentality behind it is if you're afraid of getting hurt, well, no one can hurt you if you don't ever get close to anyone. This video speaks volumes to me, because I've dealt with the same problems most of my life. I would shut people out, push them away, I didn't care about anything, and I told myself I didn't care about anyone, because I was afraid that if I let someone in, I'd get hurt again. People have tried to tell me, "oh, it gets easier," or " you just need to get over it". Both of those are bullshit. Depression doesn't ever get any easier to deal with. People will try to tell you otherwise, and they're either lying, or they don't really know what it's like. That being said, the people that don't tell you what to think, or what to do, those are the people that really help. Like I said, depression doesn't get any easier, but if you find the people that will sit and listen, and love you unconditionally, never judging you for what you're going through, find those people, and you will get better at dealing with it, because suddenly, you have something, someone, that loves you, and something and someone for you to love.

I discovered this character along with this anime by accident. I was looking for anime quotes that suit my personality and discovered quotes from Houtarou. This character is literally me. He has the same mindset, the same attitude, and the exact same skill set and sharpness for solving mysteries as me. This character is like a mirror image of me. Something I’d like to point out is that I’m seeing a lot of comments from people who seem to think the kind of attitude and mindset Houtarou has is linked to depression, but that’s not necessarily the case. Just because he’s so gray and dull doesn’t mean he’s depressed it’s just how he is. You can have a personality like this and not be depressed at all. I just thought it was interesting how it seems like everyone is attributing this kind of personality with depression but in my opinion the two don’t necessarily go hand in hand
