Nice choices - and some I definitely need to check out. My go to crowd pleasing simple card games are Point Salad and Cockroach Poker - with High Society if people can cope with a few more rules. Drop It is a great modern step up from things like Jenga and Connect 4. For a “proper” big box game then Quest for El Dorado always seems to work - I think that a simple race mechanism is always going to be more immediately engaging than counting up points to see who wins.
Loved this list! Definitely found new ones to add to my BGG list. We love Captain Flip too! A few favorites in our house are Mushroom Cats (local PDX game designer shoutout!), Happy City, Project L, Beacon Patrol, and King of Tokyo
Good choices, there are 2 I do want to look deeper into: Seaside and Bacon. have really been enjoying Alice's Garden. Its a polyomino game, but the tiles are each in the in own bag with their shape. The start player chooses a bag and takes the appropriate number of that shape. You are putting them on your board to meet some set goals.
For some truly hidden gems: Cat and Chocolate- an engaging story telling game that invokes your inner MacGuyver Atlas Lost- a japanese economic worker placement game with high visual appeal and intriguing game play Stygian Society- a cube tower driven boss battler with tense decisions Unforgiven: the Lincoln assassination trial- tableau drafting with a thematic historic lesson (similar to and better than 7 wonders duel) Disney Animated- a delightful coop where you create a scene from famous disney films to defeat their villians (uses the action selection mechanism from ark nova in a novel engaging way) Mississippi Queen- vector racing on the Mississippi river. Great components, thought provoking game play Shadow Kingdoms of Valeria- an awesome dice drafting game where you play monster tribes vying for dominance in Valeria Crude- a deep, engaging economic game about oil production that manages to play lighter than its theme.
I am quite sure you have a wrong rule in trio. Maybe that is diffrent to Na Na You win when you have three trios or the trio of sevens. No subtracting or adding rule.. even though it sounds interesting. There is an advanced rule. Here you win, when you get the trio of sevens or two trios, that have each others numbers on th bottom of the cards. 🙂
In the American version of Trio, the two trios rule is technically called "Spicy" mode I think. And you're correct, you'll win if you get two trios with the matching numbers on the bottom - those numbers just happen to all add up to or subtract down to 7! :)

Wow amazing picks! I love Point Salad especially - so easy to teach and learn but a surprising amount of strategy!!

Draftosaurus is great if you have kids. My 5 and 7 year olds love it. Plus who doesn't love dinosaurs?
