Manhattan at Large was a live televised show on public access Channel L hosted by various public servants highlighting issues around the city. It established an open dialogue between political figures, local organizations, community activists, and phone-in callers to discuss important topics and events that affected the lives of New Yorkers. In honor of Women’s History Month, we’re sharing episodes hosted by former council member and activist Miriam Friedlander. In this episode from 1989, Miriam speaks with guests Frances Goldin, Executive Board Member of the Lower East Side Joint Planning Council, Janna M. Townsend of the TriBeCa Task Force, Rob Schoenbohm, President of the East 4th Street Block Association, and Steve Rosen, Chair of Community Board 6 to discuss the complications of city growth, zoning codes, the rising rents, and cultural and small business erasure that happens as a result of big private developments moving into and taking over New York City neighborhoods.
